I hired Home Pro's to remodel my 38 years old kitchen. Absolutely great experience! The process was very smooth, communication was clear and timely, priorities and budget were respected. The end result is a stunning kitchen that met all of my needs and fit the space like a glove. My experience was so great, I have already booked another project with Home Pro's due to begin this spring, 2024. Read on for more detailed review. My goals for this remodel were to raise the ceiling height by getting rid of the fluorescent light box, add additional 20-amp circuits for countertop appliances, increase storage and countertop workspace (both linear and height clearance between upper and lower cabinets), and finally give the room an updated look without compromising flow or the original architectural aesthetics. I also specified that the quality of materials (durability and ease of cleaning) was very important to me. I expect this kitchen to last at the minimum 15-20 years. Jim submitted his design plans for my review, made his recommendations for a cabinet line / company that would meet my expectations (replacement parts and doors available). The design was very thoroughly thought out. Attention was given to things that would have never crossed my mind, such as extra space between corner sink and dishwasher to make loading the dishwasher easier; custom built-in over-the-counter microwave; cabinets where there were none before; extended countertop to add a coffee bar; and a custom table made from the same material as the countertop. Once the design was accepted, I received a contract with detailed cost for all work and materials. This full transparency was very beneficial to me. It helped me make informed decisions when deciding between full quartz backsplash or tile (the full quartz was surprisingly less expensive than the tile I would have chosen). Jim is very considerate of finances, often offering options and choices with money saving advantages. He offered simple work-arounds, suggesting rerouting an air duct instead of repositioning a support beam. This simple work-around saved me $2,000. Communication was very clear throughout the project. Employees and specialty contractors were all licensed professionals. They kept the work area clean, answered questions clearly, and most importantly, provided excellent completed work. I went into the project with a 25% buffer for unexpected expenses, as there are always surprises when you open walls. Fortunately, these were minimal and Jim used cost effective approaches when addressing them. He educated me on the options and let me make the final choices. The entire process was very fluid. There were a few slowdowns, but these were due to the City of Fremont missing inspections, not returning calls or emails, and not picking up the phone at times. Unfortunately, Fremont has suffered with these issues even before COVID, so if you live here be aware of possible delays. I have visited many open houses in my neighborhood to see how other neighbors have remodeled their space over the last 30 years. They ranged from simple facelift approaches to full luxury, and even converting to open concept design. Thankfully, I believe mine is the best kitchen remodel for this floorplan in the development. Nothing looks forced or out of place. Jim's design is impressive and robust. Thoughtful and carefully chosen upgrades made a huge difference. My new kitchen is extremely functional, and has a sophisticated, timeless look. read more

We saved for and planned our kitchen for a very long time. A trusted and experienced contractor was very important to us. We are so glad we found someone who shared and built on our vision. Jim was a joy to work with, even when I had some fairly "neurotic" requests. The original design/quote came back a little higher than our set budget, but through some creativity, we made everything work out. His crew showed up bright and early on the scheduled day and made great progress. Everything was covered carefully so that our furniture was protected. Trash and construction waste was gone at the end of every day. The crew, several of whom have worked with Jim for many years, were professional and took pride in the work they did. We had to leave for a week before the kitchen was complete and I had no problem letting them work while we were gone. In case it isn't clear yet, we are very happy with the results. We had an great experience dealing with Jim at Home Pros. Jim always knows what's going on and was a part of the construction from beginning to end. He helped us design an amazing kitchen that has very limited space! He gave us more storage and counter space than we ever imagined we could have! His price was reasonable as well. The final results were more than we ever expected! Home Pros also replaced all our hardwood flooring with beautiful results. Jim is particular about details and took care of all the little things we hardly noticed. Jim is pleasant and very easy to work with. He never made us feel pressured like some of the other contractors we interviewed. Our job was scheduled to start October 1 and be completed by October 31. Everyone we talked to said to add 4 to 6 weeks to that because contractors never complete a job on time. Not with Home Pros! Our job was completed exactly in the time frame we were given! You wouldn't believe how quickly our large addition project was completed! Our neighbors are amazed. Jim has gone the extra mile on so many aspects of our house, from replacing all the posts in our fence free of charge to replacing our neighbor;s grass strip in the driveway and several things in between as well. We had no unexpected charges from Jim, nor did the little things take nagging to get done at the end of the project. Also his bid was competitive. We hired Jim Dawkins of Home Pros to remodel our bathroom. Initially the work and planning went smoothly and for the most part the job was completed on schedule. During this phase Jim was prompt, responsive, and helpful. However in the final stages there remained some work to be corrected, such as two colored, mismatched grout, and other small items to be completed. At this point Jim Dawkins became non responsive, not coming to appointments that he had scheduled, and not answering our phone calls or letters. In other words he ignored us and we had a complete lack of communication from him. If you should decide to do business with him, I strongly suggest that you retain a very healthy amount of the payment due until the job is completed to your satisfaction. read more

We hired Jim Dawkins for our master bathroom remodel project in April 2014. Jim's prices were good and he came across as a very friendly man who knew his business. The project went well until there was a problem with noticable color variations with the grout used. Jim insisted the problem was with the grout itself and not how the grout was mixed. Regardless, fixing the problem delayed the completion of the project. What should've been done in one month dragged out to 3 months. Once the project went beyond it's target end date, it became increasingly difficult to get ahold of Jim. He wouldn't respond for days, he wouldn't show up for appointments, and he wouldn't bother to call. Almost a year later and two of the electrical outlets he installed no longer work. He was notified of the problem and promised to send electricians to fix it. It took over a month for him to tell me when they would be out, then when he finally returned my call he gave me less than 24 hours notice of their arrival. Problem is they never showed up. I called Jim repeatedly and he never answered or returned any of my calls. Bottom line, Jim offers okay work at a fair price, however his customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. I get that contractors are busy and that things happen, however to simply not show up for appointments and to not give your customer the courtesy of a call when running late is just plain rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. Future clients beware. ILLEGAL FIRE HAZZARD****** To add to my previous review...I had to hire another professional to fix the electrical problems that Home Pros left me with. Upon investigation it turns out that Home Pros had illegally installed a second junction box which was hidden behind a bathroom cabinet. We hired Jim Dawkins for a very large remodel project throughout the house. At first we were happy because he was initially very responsive and we liked him. However, as he got into the project he got overwhelmed and started forgetting things and making mistakes. In the end, I realized he did not have adequate experience for such a large job. We really regret that we didn't do our homework and find a truly qualified contractor. Our project started out strong, but partway into the project he started a new project for someone else, and took his crew off of our project. He then sent a variety of random, substandard handymen over, who would drop by unannounced for a few hours every few days or week or so, and this went on for a very long time. The few final items took months to finish, and a few items were never fully finished. We are still working (ourselves) to finish, correct, and redo things that were badly done, not done, or have come loose or broken. Also at various times during the project he asked us to write checks to his crew, and some (but not all) of those checks were supposed to be credited toward our invoices. One very large check that should have been credited did not get credited, and we were unable to get refunded on the overpayment, costing us several thousand dollars. His invoicing was unbelievably bad (messy, disorganized, full of arithmetic errors and corrections, scratch-outs, etc.) and we really regret not insisting that we sit down and redo all of it prior to final payment. With hindsight I can't believe we went along with it. Also there was also almost no planning done at the start of the project (we realize now we should have demanded more and trusted less). And throughout the project there was a lack of attention to detail, poor scheduling, and poor record keeping. Basically, he's a good talker and just makes things up as he goes along, which may be a great life philosophy but not a good way to manage a project. This was an expensive learning experience for us. Next time we will be more careful. We've had good experiences with other contractors in the past, which led us to be too trusting. And now we're just so disappointed. We had really liked him, but now we are the ones that have to live with the botched remodel. I hope you don't end up with the same regrets that we did. read more

Our project was a full kitchen-dining room remodel ,new ceiling-lights and floors. After getting enough estimates I am so happy we picked Jim and his crew. He wasn't the cheapest but from our first meeting he inspire trust and confidence. I knew what I was looking for the design but he suggested something no one else thought of.He took advantage a corner and voila extra cabinets and counter without taking any extra space! In one week I was able to use the sink (really important if you live the same time at the house). His crew was really polite and they answered any questions I may had always with a smile on their face. We end up having Jim change some of our windows and put new closet doors. I'm finally getting around to putting this notice out there so you will not have to go through the pain that I did in working with Jim Dawkins and his crew. I contracted with his associate Brian Lunn to remodel a bathroom last year. Not only did it take 6 months (originally the time table was 1 month) but it ended in small claims court and my hiring another firm to finish the job. It was beyond bad communication and poor management -- he didn't deliver on material he promised, his work had to be redone, he overcharged for items and didn't pay back for overcharges for standard things like permit fees (he charged me over $2,500 for a $530 permit -- we had the understanding that the difference would be refunded -- but ... he said he would refund after the entire project was done and I still owed him $1500 for other work!). Further, Jim didn't show or communicate when he said he would, even to pick up checks I was providing to him!! Jim tried to skimp by using backer board where we had contracted to apply mud (this required a tear out and redo, and wouldn't have said anything had I not know to ask and question). The entire experience was a nightmare. Brian who I contracted with and who was supposed to be available through the project was not available to me via email or phone even 2 months after the project began (I only had the office number and Jim wouldn't give me any forwarding information -- maybe he didn't have it because Brian wanted nothing to do with him!). Jim paid me what I demanded in small claims court - but even came there late and never delivered the final parts of the cabinet that he partially installed! It was just a bathroom and I didn't need the hassle. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere for contracting needs. read more

We found Home Pro's right here on Yelp. We just bought a house in Livermore, and were redoing the entire kitchen right off the bat. We contacted Home Pros and the owner Jim came out and walked us through everything. We shopped around through various places and other contractors. We ended up going back to Jim and his company. Jim was able to be within our budget while still getting us the higher quality material we wanted, unlike some of the other places we got bids from. The cabinets look amazing and are of excellent quality (can you say dovetail?!), and the granite countertops are beautiful. He was very responsive and helped out any way he could. Jim came into our house after we found water damage in the kitchen. He helped us with insurance and we ended up remodeling our kitchen. Jim has such a calm demeanor and it's been great to be able to work with his son, Brady, too. Jim was very conscience of our budget since we had just moved into our new house and didn't expect such a big project right away. His attention to detail is amazing and the little things he has suggested has really made the remodel (corner shelves, trash cabinet, etc.). Jim and his son Brady did our kitchen last month- They replaced cabinets and countertops. Jim was professional, accommodating, gave great advice as we struggled with some decisions, and most of all , worked with our budget, giving us the best deal of the 8 contractors we looked at. His son showed up on day 1 of remodeling and worked hard and fast. They completed the job within budget and faster than they estimated- only 4 days! The only issue that came up was that he was so busy with other projects that he arrived a bit later than stated for 2 appointments. we hired home pros for a dining room/kitchen remodel. They were good on the price, not most expensive nor cheapest. We got a great bargain considering the scope of the work done. Complete demo. of kitchen/dining, new electrical in kitchen, new breaker, porcelain floors for both, new plaster for ceiling, recessed lights, quartz counter tops and a slew of other stuff. 6 weeks to done... way faster than anyone else.
