Would it be selfish of me to say the Beaverton bakery Hold the Wheat was developed and launched just for me? I mean, in all honesty, this place should be called Nico's Gluten Free Bakery... I love what they've created so much! Hold the Wheat is both style and substance. They've done an amazing job creating gluten free baked goods that are delicious; so crispy and flaky when they're supposed to be, so light and fluffy as well - you'd never know you were eating products without gluten. Bravo! Whenever I find businesses that fill me with joy, I always remember that love is in the details. And that's very much the case at Hold the Wheat. I love their updated vintage esthetic. The pink and orange and brown has me gushing emojis of pure joy! The pink takeout boxes are adorbs. The lush and beautiful plant wall, disco ball, retro seating, and happy branding all leave me wanting to do a happy dance right there in the dining room. The breakfast sandwiches are my go-to, but everything else I've tried here is amazing. The staff are super friendly, extremely patient, and always have great recommendations for any indecisive customers like me. Going into this I expected the pastries to taste like cardboard. As someone who has had gluten free items that tasted like disappointment, I was worried. I was wrong! I got the Marion berry pop tart and my fiancé got a lemon cake pastry. It tasted better without the gluten. I swear it was some witch craft! I went towards the ends of the day and the pastries still tasted like fresh baked. I wish I got more when I was there. One Marion berry pop tart was not enough. Recently determined I needed to go GF, so I'm on the constant search for options. We tried HTW this weekend, grabbing a handful of sweet treats and one warm, savory item. Every item was tasty...every bit as tasty as non-GF treats. I didn't need the amount of icing they include on things, but that's pretty standard for me as I tend to like things slightly less sweet than the normal human it seems. I love a savory pastry which is hard to come by as a GF person. Every time i have gotten the mushroom pastry there have been huge woody rosemary stems/sticks inside the pastry. First off, the staff is amazing and this review is not about them. But I need to say I'm kind of shocked at the level of "you can totally tell this is gluten free" was off the charts, and not in a good way. It was highly apparent from the first bite of all of my items that these were gluten free, and didn't expect that from this place. That sandy, gritty texture was in every bite, even the chocolate cake, which normally are the moister of the gf goods, and I can't imagine the owner of this bakery is gluten free, because that texture is the nemesis of gluten free products, and there are many local bakeries that have amazing products that you actually question if it's gluten free or not because the texture is just perfect and moist. That paired with the price is unfortunately a no for me. Don't get me wrong, I will pay top dollar for a delicious and perfectly textured gluten free product, but this wasn't it. read more

A true little and cute gem! Everything is gluten free, but if you were not to know that, you would never guess that those delicious goods aren't wheat-based. The selection of pastries is big. I have been shopping here for a year by now and have probably tasted almost all their offering - and gotta say, they are All delicious! Nice selection of frozen enteres and pastries to go. Good coffee and lattes to pair with your desserts, and they do have a few tables for you to seat and enjoy on the spot. Price is reasonable. You had me at pop tart. The interior is cute and funky. For some reason I felt like I was walking onto the set of the dating game. Which might be a good metaphor as I approached the glass case to see who (what) might be a good match for me. The website doesn't show a whole lot of dairy free items, but they have a whole case in the store. I bought several and can't wait to try. (They had two different loves, sugar cookies, muffins, and a couple of other pastries. They also had one savory vegan option.) So far I've tasted the pop tart (must be popular because I almost had to arm wrestle a young girl for the last one). We arrived at 10:30, so that's relatively quick to sell out of something. It was delicious. The crust had a good crunch but was also flakey and seemed buttery even though it was vegan. The jam filling was wonderful. Not too much, and a good thickness, so it didn't squeeze out when you eat it. Also got a matcha latte. Way better than Starbucks. You can taste the matcha and it isn't too sweet. The line was a little confusing, but the staff were very helpful and friendly. Definitely plan to come back. read more

I don't have one negative thing to say. Are the prices high? Yes, but you get what you pay for. I am not gluten free but my girlfriend is. And I made the trek all the way from the east side to get her a treat. The staff was amazing. Personable, knowledgable and patient. And you know what else, their clientle was spot on. I asked a couple of strangers what they recommended and every single one of them was enthusiastic about their recommendations. One even said they weren't gluten free but come here anyway because everything was so delicious. Got the girlfriend the chocolate chip cookies which were amazing. Salty sweet and soft. She loved the apple turnover thingymabob. She said it tasted like apple pie. The gingerbread cookies were also soft and not crunchy, inedible hard. They were fucking delicious. Like a gluten free party in your mouth. I'm surprised my girlfriend even shared. This place is a 10/10. I lied when I said I have nothing negative to say. I wanted something special for a dear friend who is celiac, and I remember passing this place a number of times, but never had a reason to stop by. What a silly reason not to stop by this amazing place!!! Going into this bakery, one thing that caught my eye was the signage. You can't miss this place and it's cute! The bakery is quite eye catching with a bright orange exterior. Once you enter, you are greeted by a whimsical retro-inspired decor. We were there on a Saturday morning and it was PACKED! As goods were flying out off of the shelves, I was a bit worried that they might sell out pastries! The good news is that they kept bringing out more to calm my food anxiety. My friend, the reason we came, has a serious gluten allergy and is allergic to eggs and nightshades. The only item she could have was the mushroom pastry and she really enjoyed it. I got the lemon & cream danish and an egg and sausage hot pocket, and liked them both. The hot pocket crust was hot and crunchy, while the lemon danish was tangy. Both were delicious and I enjoyed them with a cappuccino. I wish there was more indoor seating for a party of 3 or more. There was only one booth and it was taken. So we sat outside and got drizzled by the afternoon shower. Thank goodness the weather is still nice enough, but it won't be fun when winter comes. Also the pastries was quite pricy and the cost added up fast. I understand that speciality pastries usually cost more, but it does make it harder to justify frequent visits as I do not have any allergies or intolerances. I was pleasantly surprised to find delicious, flavorful baked goods that don't taste like cardboard like previous gluten-free things I have ate. The Pop Tarts and hot veggie quiche were particularly amazing! However, I noticed that a lot of customers were dining in, but there wasn't an option to order on plates. I finally took the time to stop by Hold the Wheat today, I've driven by it so many times. I'm really glad I did! I had a chai latte, the Ube parfait, and coffee cake. Everything was delicious with the star being the parfait. I thought the parfait was very light and understood why once I got to work, instead of a thick yogurt it's actually very light and airy like a whipped cream consistency, with granola, blueberries, and little cookie pieces throughout. My family of 3 is not gluten free, but I have been eyeing this place because the theming & decor is so cute! Finally stopped by on 9:30am on a Sunday. No line, but a number of patrons were sitting inside drinking coffee and chatting at the indoor tables. Well-stocked pastry display. Cashier was pleasant & friendly. We ordered a few pastries and I was disappointed to see they weren't heated before serving. I ended up pleasantly surprised when the savory pastries were already warm! I enjoyed the ham & cheese danish with a crumbly, slightly sweet, buttery crust and a savory ham, cheese & cream cheese mixture baked on top. My husband and toddler enjoyed the savory snuggle pie with honey mustard on the side. A few parts of the sausage were a bit spicy for my toddler, but she only had a tiny complaint with one bite and then continued to eat and enjoy. We also liked the mixed berry sweetie pie which was perfectly sweet and full of berries. The pop tarts were cute, but ended up being a bit too sweet for us.
