Food Quality 6/10 We got the shrimp dinner, and the oyster po boy. Both tasted reasonably well. The fries were a bit dry. Onion rings better then the sandwich which was not properly sized, bread to oyster ratio was huge. Mac n cheese was okay but tasted plain. Food was presented reasonably well despite the low number/size of shrimp. Service 7/10 This was contested between my fiancé and I. At first the waitress a nice blonde woman was good, asked questions, didn't interrupt, she knew the menu perfectly. Problems were she stopped to chat at tables a long time before taking our order and did it in front of us which is a bit rude. We thought it was just one table but then when we got our check and waited for her to come back for the card she stopped again and we timed 10 minutes since she dropped the check to coming back for the card and I had to get her attention across the room to get her to come get it. She then yelled I'm coming, and apologized but it felt half-hearted and like she was annoyed we had to ask her for help. But besides that she and her coworker were excellent. Food came reasonably fast even while busy. Food price and 3-10 The food was good however vastly over priced. I got the shrimp dinner which was 23$. I received 9 medium sized shrimp (21-30's). The fries were a reasonable portion but the Mac n cheese was small. The shrimp tasted fine but the low number made the plate look small and way out of the price range, I estimated this was a 18$ meal, and go figure at lunch you get the same meal for 16$! For those wanting a reasonable price I would avoid this place. The beer was good except served in a mason jar which hurt the flavor and made it difficult to sip from, and they claimed it was a quart for 8$ of bud light but it was questionable in terms of volume. Cleanliness/Presentation 8/10 The place very clean minimal waste or clutter. Tables had been organized and kept neat. Menu was organized, but a sub-menu that was annoying to navigate and not handed to you. Bonus points The fry on the shrimp and oysters were decent. Love this place. The food is different and tasty. Theres lots of different meals Ive had here. Tonight I had the fried oyster tacos. The oysters were perfectly fried. The batter was light and crispy. They had a hint of heat with a cilantro finish. The Nashville hot tacos were equally as good and flavorful. They were hot but not too hot. The poutine fries with pork and a little bacon also was very flavorful. It was better than I even expected. The staff are friendly and attentive. I've had Hogshead Cafe bookmarked since the summer while I still lived in NY, but just finally got around to eating there. I feel I've done myself a great disservice up until now since Hogshead Cafe is truly fantastic. --Food: My fiancee ordered the Fried Shrimp plate with Sweet Potato Fries and Hushpuppies, and a piece of Peanut Butter Pie to go. I ordered the Hog Dog without Cole Slaw and also a Fried Pickles appetizer. I wouldn't recommend ordering both if you have any health concerns (as I should), but they both sounded delicious, so I couldn't help it. #YOLO Here's what I thought. - Fried Pickles: Fried pickle spears with a light batter served with parmesan ranch sauce. Fried, salty, and crazy delicious,I'm convinced they're made of crack. I would seriously go and just get these, they are fantastic. They stay crispy which I've found is the problem with other pickle strips, and the amount of pickle to breading ratio is right on. And that dipping sauce is great too. - Hog Dog: A bacon wrapped hot dog with BBQ pulled pork on it? I'm in. To be honest, the single piece of bacon wrapping the hot dog gets lost under the pulled pork (and cole slaw I imagine if you had it with that), but the dog as a whole is pretty good. It's a jumbo hot dog unlike some of the local hot dog places, so one will (should) be enough. The pulled pork on top almost makes it feel like another sandwich, so that was neat. - French Fries / Sweet Potato Fries: Both of these were good. The fries were typical fries but they were nice and crunchy and very dippable with the BBQ sauce on the table. They weren't overly salty either, which I find sometime plague diner type places. - Shrimp: I didn't have these but my fiancee enjoyed them and dipped them in BBQ sauce as well. The Hog BBQ sauce is less sweet than some other places and more smoky. It goes pretty well with the pulled pork and is great for dipping fries in. There is also a Carolina BBQ sauce on the table, which I didn't try. It is worth mentioning that the menu is rather large, and there is a large chalkboard with daily specials. I am interested to try the chili, seafood po-boy sandwiches, chili fries, and some of their BBQ specialties. I want to try ALL the things. Fair warning though, most of their items are fried or seasoned something-or-others, so if you're health conscious, just be careful. --Cost: The bill for everything we had which included an appetizer, two full lunch entrees, and a dessert was $38. It's not cheap but the portioning was huge. We each brought home about 1/3 of our meal as left overs. --Atmosphere: Some of the restaurants that are in plazas around the area are, like the Tardis, misleadingly larger on the inside. Hogshead Cafe is, like a normal phone booth, not one of these places. Similes aside, there are 10 tables of varying sizes in here along with a bar with some seats. The tables are close together and the whole area is a bit cramped, but not uncomfortably so. Hogshead has a friendly vibe and the walls are decorated with BBQ decor as well as a couple TVs. We went at lunch time on Saturday and the place was almost completely at its capacity, and people even had to wait for tables. Oh yeah, and the smell when you walk in the door is wonderful! --Service: There was only two servers and limited other staff, but with the amount of seating it seems appropriate. Our server didn't stop by that much, but the actual food was made fairly quickly and she was extremely pleasant and well informed about the menu. I would have liked another water earlier on, but no harm done. --Overall: I really enjoyed Hogshead Cafe. Everything we got was delicious, and almost everything else on the menu looks delicious as well. If you're in the West End and want some good ole' American food in a slightly hole in a wall setting, definitely check it out. read more

We went to Hogshead Cafe at the recommendation of the fabulous Mr. Tommy. When we walked in, all of the empty tables had yet to be bussed. It just seemed like dirty dishes were everywhere. Even though there were empty tables, we had to wait for tables to be bussed. There was an apology and the servers were friendly. We ordered a soup and salad combo. There was a choice of chili, brunswick stew, French onion soup, and lobster bisque. There was also a choice of a house, Caesar, or Field of Greens salad. We ordered the lobster bisque and Field of Greens salad. It was quite tasty. I especially enjoyed the salad with its candied pecans, mandarin oranges, and blue cheese crumbles (see photo). The hubs ordered the cheesesteak and sweet potato fries. Unfortunately, he did not enjoy the sandwich and felt that the meat was over cooked. He ordered sweet potatoes as his side. They came with a maple dipping sauce. We shared a large homemade limeade. I enjoyed that although the price for the large limeade was approx. $4.49! I will return. read more

I'll be honest; I was in the area on a Tuesday night intending to hit up Pho So 1. I forgot that it's closed every Tuesday. I didn't want to head all the way home to Mechville so I looked through my Yelp bookmarks. Lo and behold Hogshead Cafe was already bookmarked and right around the corner. With an average Yelp rating of 4.5 stars and over 150 reviews it was a no brainer. I drove right by this place twice. It's somewhat tricky to find if it's your first time. There is a glowing white sign letting you know you're in the right spot. I walked in and noticed how small the place is. It's charming with great decorations on the wall. Our waitress showed up and took our drink order. I asked her what their most popular dish was and she said "Our hotdog. It's our hotdog that put us on the map." I sat there stunned. Their menu is loaded with good things to eat but I would have never guessed the silly hotdog was their claim to fame. I chickened out of course and ordered up the baby back ribs. They were fall off the bone perfect. I think the potato salad might have even been better. I know right? When does the side dish beat out the main course? The sides were that good. I owe it to myself to try this place a least a half dozen more times. If they can pull off baby back ribs and killer potato salad... that hotdog must be the bomb. My family and I discovered this restaurant when we found out they had a great patio during phase one of the COVID-19 restrictions in VA. We went today and were pleasantly surprised that the inside was open up during phase two! We had the "Hot Cat" special with corn pudding and it was delicious! In the past we've had the nachos and they're a perfect meal for two loaded with pulled pork and toppings. I would say this is one of our new favorite restaurants in the RVA area. The food seems to be consistent, the restaurant is clean, and the staff are so friendly. They are taking appropriate measures to keep customers healthy and safe. Paper disposable menus, employees wearing masks, tables are 6 feet apart, and they have exceptional sanitation measures. I look forward to trying new things in the future. read more

We did not feel welcomed, the host didn't even crack a smile or offer a high chair for the baby with us. We waited 20 minutes and nobody ever came to our table. It was not busy and there was more staff than guests. Also, NOT a family friendly atmosphere. We sat next a loud and vulgar table that was solely drinking. The bartender checked on the star patrons to see if they needed another drink, but we were still not acknowledged. If you love bbq and meat you will not be disappointed! Came here with a couple of friends and was hesitant that they wouldn't like it but everyone was happy especially with the SPICY wings. They are whole wings so even half a dozen is more than enough for a meal. Spicy is spicy, with jalepenos on top. It was not too spicy that we could not taste the flavor. Also got pulled pork which are very large portions, whether the sandwich or platter. Platter does not come with a carb which was a little disappointing for me (just felt something lacking). The sides were really good and homey. Sweet potato fries were probably the best I've had or in the top 3. Well battered, with a brown sugar like dipping sauce, and not limp. Mmmm. Also tried a couple of their sides of the days, potatoes au gratin (a hint of garlic which I love), and the broccoli bake (also yum). I didn't crave meat so much to try the bacon fried hot dog yet. Service was friendly and everyone seemed pretty happy with their meals. Restaurant wasn't very big, but has several tables kind of close together. It's not a great deal but you don't feel like you're getting rip off either. The fish was slightly crispy but very juicy. Nice flavors and same for the fries. The only downside for me was with the cheese, slaw, and the buttered toast bread. It feels a bit oily and heavy. But it feels like a hearty meal. I will try the hot cat next time read more

The place is very roomy and is in the shopping center between an Asian market and restaurant. The place is clean and the smell is just delicious. I ended up ordering the Cuban Hog sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. The sandwich was DELISH and I love their spicy mustard that they had there. It was so good, my coworker ended up buying one for himself to bring home haha. The mac and cheese was super cheesy and hot, the Cuban sandwich was beautiful displayed and each bite was favorable and just REALLY good. I highly suggest this place for lunch, dinner, double dates, meeting dates, tinder dates, all the above. Almost forgot. Since it was on my boss's tab, totally ordered dessert. This relatively small cafe opened up in 2011 (I caught myself reading some of the framed articles on the walls) by a husband and wife who wanted to introduce some of their interesting culinary recipes to others. Suffice to say, they've been winning the barbecue/comfort food game ever since. The menu is not too overwhelming, but as the establishment's name would indicate, it's definitely catering to the carnivorous diet. I wavered between two menu favorites, but my friendly server advised to go with the Cuban Hog. She was right - the best Cuban sandwich I've ever had. Savory, thinly sliced smoked ham with pulled pork that held a nice smokey flavor. And the Dijon mustard, layered swiss and garlic roll were killer. I ordered theobster bisque soup to sadly be told that they were all out, but.....they had just finished a batch of broccoli cheese soup.....OH boy....my lucky day. This was probably the BEST broccoli cheese soup that I have had.....ANYWHERE! I dont even remember the sand which that I order.....but it was pretty darn good too! I got a boner at hogshead cafe .... well that's what the shirts there say and you have to look on the menu (attached) to see what a boner is :) We ere going to the west tower cinema to see a movie and family was tired of sushi .. what tired of sushi ?! .. so to make the fam happy I looked up American and hogshead came up with a high review and I was like ..what is this place ??? So then the adventure began.. Nested between an asian grocery store and a Asian restaurant ...right in the smack dab middle of the two is a small place called Hogshead. The place is small but interesting nonetheless. Menu was interesting hand the people are great . This is one of those places only the locals know about ... people were waiting outside and inside TIP: if you call ahead they will put your name on a list .. if you need a quick eat and have a little fun this is it . The Tiki, Nashville Hot Chicken and Fish taco's were delicious and definitely more then I expected being a foodie at heart. But the Coconut Cake and Bread Pudding absolutely blow me away. Very good, but not the best I have ever had. Great for affordable beer. I got a large pour/quart of Allagash White for $7.95. Awesome sweet potato fries(tasty honey dip with a hint of mustard and cinnamon). Good collard greens, but I added a little of their vinegar sauce to make it even better. Brisket (on special they don't have it every day) was very tender and juicy. I wish that they offered burnt ends- that would have made it a 5 star meal. Only major complaint was because I have a strong sense of smell and on the patio I could smell the dumpster. So if you have a great sense of smell- ask to sit inside. read more

Easy to get to, free parking lot, interior design is on point for a BBQ joint, friendly server, and a well rounded menu. Bf ordered ribs, loaded potato salad, and mac and cheese. I ordered their "The Boner" dish, which was AMAZING. Hands down the best hot dog frank I have ever had.
