I would highly suggest grabbing this as an app. The bread service is already fresh and delicious... but the secret sauce... ask your waiter for the dip. Yes, it now costs a little extra. But oh my word.... It is worth every scent. The Blackenzola is worth the creative name and topping! The gorgonzola is fresh and adds such a delicious crust with the balsamic glaze on top of their filet mignon. The chef cooks the meat to perfection and it is a great meal. The green beans are a great vegetable option. The mashed potatoes make sense to be a Chef's Choice. The piping on the plate is beautiful - and they are smooth and creamy! After eating such good food, you have to say yes to just see the Dessert menu... and the tiramisu was calling my name. They give you a large portion and you can taste the freshness of this decadent dessert. The service here with our server was very attentive. However, the food was not as good as we were hoping. The bread was served cold but the oil was excellent. I ordered the chicken piccata with green beans and mashed potatoes. The chicken piccata was rough to cut into and had no lemon flavor to it at all. Nice Italian spot, with a small variety of solid Italian and other dishes, especially worth it for the great cocktails. Very classic Italian restaurant, older crowd and can be a wait for food, but service was really great. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of cocktail options and holiday flavors, all of them were interesting and delicious! This was a nice sit down place with an older crowd. But the food is really good and the portion size is very generous. The chicken salad sandwich was really good. Full cashews in it and big chunks of chicken with grapes. The croissant was good and airy. Not super heavy. It comes with Cole slaw which is super cabbagy and I did not enjoy that part of my meal. But great sandwich and yummy fries. The pork chop was pretty good, not dry at all. The mashed potatoes were smooth and good but pretty basic. The turkey club sandwich was large and decent. I would just comment that it might be heavy on the bread. Overall I would definitely come back and try other dishes. We've eaten at Hoffstot's since moving to Oakmont 40 years ago. It's sad to see how this place has gone downhill of late. Two examples: a few weeks back, my wife got a special of coconut shrimp, and it was outstanding. We went back a week later, and she ordered it again. This time the shrimp were seriously undercooked, with the insides gray and cold. They remade the dish when this was brought to the server's attention. A week later, my wife wanted to get takeout, and ordered their "Mega Salad" with chicken, which is described as "topped w/ fresh cut French fries." When we got home, there was not a French fry in sight. How can a kitchen omit one of the three main ingredients? Old-timers recall when Hoffstot's served a complimentary dipping oil with their bread service, and some lacy cookies at the end of the meal. They now charge for the dipping oil, and the cookies are gone. Sad! read more

So sorry! This was our special 'go to' and we were very un-impressed this time (our 3rd or 4th time). It was the day before Valentine's, we had never in our 45 yrs went for the Valentine Day thing. So disappointed. We were after lunch time (1:00) and it seemed that some staff might have been off for their own breaks. Don't go during lunch. I had chicken. It was served on a plate all by its lonesome. Nothing special, no attempt to "plate it" just looked so lonesome on a large plate. Nothing special, how sad! The side was a salad, I liked it. We have never been before at lunch. Sadly, it does come off as a very " chummy" restaurant. You know, the old 'Pgh friends are priority" It took forever - over 35 minutes for our food. This is an update to my review about the Friday fish fry. The service was excellent, but this review is about the food. To me consistency dictates if and how often I'll return to the same place. While my first visit was fine, the second visit bombed. To be fair, I did order some different things, and this is where some issues surfaced. That being said, based on this visit, I'll be taking my business down the street. A local club right down the street also has a Friday fish fry and I tried it last year. It was exceptional. Hoffstot's added some things from last week to this week. The pierogies were pretty good, (5 for $5), even though I'm pretty sure they aren't made in house. Still, as a commercial product, they were good, with a nice amount of buttered onions served with them. I have never understood places skimping on adding onions. They're cheap enough and add a boost of flavor and texture to what could be a bland product. Hoffstot's seems to have a pretty good handle on the right amount to add to the dish to enhance it rather than overpower it. Once again, I thought the fish was good. After that, things fell apart. My mac and cheese, (which was actually shells and cheese), was dry and hard on top. I have to admit that I didn't eat any of it. I scooped it out and threw it away. The inside of the container was contaminated, and I wasn't sure what it was that was in there. I plan to take it back for some kind of explanation. There is something red inside, which could have been a sauce, barbecue or ketchup, or something more serious, like blood. Either way, I didn't want to take a chance on cross contamination. The second part was worse. I remembered this time to order the halushki. At $5, it was $5 more than it should have been. I have certain expectations about a favored family dish. This wasn't it. I shouldn't have to explain that the cabbage should be cooked before mixing it with the noodles. What I got was raw, hard thick pieces of cabbage among noodles. They were far more raw than cooked, and I gave up trying to eat it after a few bites. For 2 people getting a take out for well over $50, it was a terrible experience. We got 2 dinners, a fish sandwich, small container of cole slaw, contaminated mac and cheese and a soggy cookie with a small condiment of tartar sauce and a few pickle slices for $40. The sides were $5 each, so $15 for 10 pierogies and a container of cabbage and noodles. I can tick off half a dozen places near the same area where the same money would have given me more and better food. I understand that the same owner owns and operates several food businesses in the area. Many are on point with their food. I have been considering visiting the actual restaurant, but after these experiences, I'm certainly not in a hurry. You're only as good as your worst day. read more

Hoffstot's is our go to favorite restaurant when we want great food. We often take friends and family here as our treat. Although it always seems busy, the service has always been great. Unlike many restaurants these days, hot food comes out hot and cold food comes out cold. The food is always delicious and I can say we have not had any dishes we did not like. I especially like their seafood soups which are usually available on Friday's. I also especially like that we get good value for the cost which is quite reasonable. read more

This is my first time at this establishment, and everything was delicious. One of my friends had recommended Hoffstot's for a dinner together, and told me that this place was friendly and the food was delicious. After having eaten here, I could not agree more! Overall, the ambience is welcoming, and the staff make sure that every customer is well taken care of. The person that I was dinner with pretty much everybody that was working at the restaurant, and introduced me to them - I don't think I've ever met a friendlier group! My friend made several recommendations regarding their menu, and I decided to have their Scattino "beggar's purses" pasta dish - I absolutely loved it; this dish had everything - Italian, sweet sausage, peppers, Boursin cream, and this was truly worth the visit. The wait staff were super attentive, and made sure that everyone was well cared for during the meal - honestly, it appeared as if all of the customers knew the wait staff well; definitely a good sign of dedication to excellent service and delicious food... They have really gone down hill the past few years and are now at their lowest point. This poor review is not a complaint but more a plea for the restaurant to improve. We started to notice the quality of their dishes declining each time we'd visit over the past several years, but we kept giving them another chance. But EVERYTHING about my meal this Saturday night was disappointing. The polenta was dry and hard as a rock. The greens in the greens and beans were so tough, I couldn't chew them. The beef in the mini blackenzola seemed like scraps of beef and not the quality beef it should have been. Lastly, the almond torte dessert was dry and hard. Memories of dining here as a teenager made this almost a no brainer when looking for a place for a group to meet and eat for a Monday evening dinner. Luckily, some of the more trendy Pittsburgh restaurants were closed on Monday, so even though it was a second or third choice, it was the right choice. Dining as an adult makes me appreciate what they're doing here even more. I ordered the stuffed pepper which is an all vegetarian filling. My pepper was huge so I only got one, and cut a few pieces for others to try. Everyone loved it and so did I. It had olives and pistachios in it and was unique and familiar at the same time. The Salads that come with the meal were amazing and large. I should have ordered the Apple Gorgonzola as it looked exquisite. The tossed salad was pretty good too. Nobody ordered the Caesar salad. For dinner, there was a blackened salmon special with a gumbo sauce over rice. The sauce was spot on, the salmon was cooked well, but the blackened part left much to the imagination. They seam to cater to a much older crowd, so maybe it's seasoned lightly by default. Blackened for Senior Citizens is different than for this diner (although I'm approaching AARP age) My neighboring diner ordered manicotti and he cut me off a piece and all I can say is OMGIH... Manicotti is one of my favorite foods and that manicotti was hands down the best I've ever eaten. If I go back, I'm eating that! I may get one to go too! Who knows. He didn't finish it and you-know-who scooped it up off his plate and finished it for him... even in a pandemic... that's how good it is. Worth the risk! Everyone enjoyed their meal and many commented on why they don't go more often (some live closer than others). I grew up not too far and this was a treat when we ate here. 5-Stars for sure. I really don't know what was wrong with our waitress tonight. she asked us if we wanted black pepper for salad and my partner said yes, and she never brought it. She also brought the wrong dressing when he was trying to be good. She was just very very surly. She asked us if we wanted Parmesan cheese at a one of those little shredding machines and we both said yes she reached a car my partners plate and dumped the cheese onto my pasta. We just want to get away for her so badly we decided not to have dessert there I know everyone has a bad day every every every once in a a while. The food was fine. It was nice. This place was pretty overpriced. I did like the ambience, but the food wasn't as special as I would have guessed. I ordered a pistachio pasta, but it really tasted a lot like buttered noodles with pistachios and a bloody Mary, and it was the most water down bloody Mary I have ever had for desserts were amazing though, I got some sort of toffee cake al a mode. The thing about that was that the menu said it was 8.95 but then I was charged $8.95 for the cake and an additional two dollars for the a la mode even though that is how it was presented on the menu. read more

The various specials and the special early menu mean I can dine here often without gettting tired of the same dishes.
