Seems to be permanently closed. Proprietor has been stringing what once was, loyal customers along for more than a year. A proper re-opening date never was announced. Servers that were there moved on to other employment opportunities. People grow older, for some retirement is in their sights, sadly for some retirement is not by their own choosing by whatever circumstances. Some small establishments are passed to family member that will with all heart keep that business going and thriving. Some Proprietors have no one to pass their legacy to, and others pass it along with hopes and expectations that do not come to fuision. When someone takes over a small business their goal is sometimes not to make changes too quickly then to the detriment of the business some want to quickly make changes. Some changes chase people away. Hodges Cafe had a glorious heyday. Hodge was always a friendly face ready for nice conversation or life advise. The Hodge Burger was award winning in this area; people still crave them. Friday nights were great for a Hodge Burger then walk it off with a walk to the theatre for a movie (now closed) then walk back to Hodges for beers. Sad that most of the neighborhood establishments are gone now. Barberton had quite a few neighborhood places that could be safely walked to from home. It seems to now be a rarity that people can pass along anything and expect the recipient to love it with as much heart as the giver. Your public misses you Hodge. read more

My first time to Hodge's Cafe today. I was told by my friend how good the food is..... He was so RIGHT!!! I had the Mama burger with the Swiss cheese, bacon & grilled mushrooms & onions. The burger was cooked just right & juicy. Flavor was amazing!!!! It was so large I took 1/2 of my sandwich home for my dinner. Rick had the Breakfast burger which had a fried egg, bacon & cheese. He ate the entire sandwich Also we shared a plate of fresh cut fries which were excellent ! The experience & service with Josh was very kind, considerate & very efficient !!! The atmosphere is quaint, comfortable & clean! I've decided this is my new, favorite burger place! Josh explained the new expansion of the kitchen which will be much larger. Local best-kept-secret kind of cafe. A bit of a hole in the wall, but their burgers are to die for. Inexpensive food, but tasty! Their burgers are thick and homemade, with the toppings loaded on (make sure to get it "with everything!). I've had Hodge's twice now, and both times the food has been well worth the trip to Barberton. both times have been takeout, so a trip to eat in will be in order soon! read more

Continuing our epic burger quest, my friends and I journeyed from Fairlawn to Barberton on a Sunday night, based off a recommendation from a coworker. We had no idea what to expect, other than a burger. Hodge's neon sign greeted us on this dark, chilly night, and we pulled into the small parking lot across the street. Everything around looked rather run down, and my friends and I exchanged uncertain glances. The entrance by the lot is a nondescript door on the side of a dark and windowless wall, and us ladies made our black belt friend go first. He ushered us in, and immediately a smile broke across my face upon stepping inside, and I felt at home. The decor is simply fantastic. Think blue collar dive bar crossed with a country diner. There were a couple deer heads mounted on the wall, Christmas lights strung from the ceiling, and NASCAR on the televisions, complete with a huddle of retired men gathered around a screen with their beers. The booths are cozy, complete with red checked tablecloths. Our waitress was quite friendly, and we all put in our burger orders, along with a side of fries. She didn't ask us how we wanted them cooked, but we figured they were the masters. And indeed they were. Our burgers were all cooked medium to medium-well, and while we would usually prefer medium rare they were still juicy as all get out and packed full of flavor. It's also worth mentioning that these burgers are HUGE. We barely managed to finish the fries we ordered between the three of us! This isn't what I would call a specialty/craft/gourmet burger place, but definitely the most solid of straight-up burger places. We will be returning. Upon finishing and paying our checks, we were given burger punch cards. Earn all your punches, and you get a free burger. Sounds good to me! read more

Best burger around! Freshly made burger patties. Amazing size and taste. Many varieties to choose from. There are also other typical food items such as steak, chicken and fish. They also have a full bar. There are daily food specials which draw the regulars back. The interior is old, cramped and outdated (basically what you think of as a classic greasy spoon or dive). The burgers here are amazing- savory fries swapped for regular fries is a must. My husband usually gets a chili cheese hot dog and they are huge and full of chili and cheese. The building isn't much to look at but it's what on the inside that counts. Hodge and his crew are always friendly and good for some laughs. I've eaten here a few times and have always had a great (fresh, 1/2 pound, hand-pressed) burger. Prices range from $5.50 for the Hodge Burger to $6.95 for more fancy ones to $12.00 for the Double Hodge Burger. A small side of hand-cut fries adds $2.25. So, aside from a drink, it's easy to have a filling meal for under $10.00. Hodge's is an old, throw-back bar, on a street corner of a working man's neighborhood. A long bar sits along one wall with small booths along the opposite. Steep steps at the entrances make it NOT accessible to wheelchairs. Several four-square tables fill the space between. A larger group can grab a single large table at the entrance (call ahead to reserve). Usually more people occupy the tables than the bar, hinting at why people come to Hodge's. In the past I've usually enjoyed the Black & Blue, primarily bacon and Bleu cheese, but last night I had the Mama Burger, a rather unusual name for a burger with Swiss cheese, bacon, mushrooms and grilled onions. They failed to ask how I wanted it cooked, nor did they ask what I wanted on it. The menu says "Everything" includes ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion, and garlic pickles, several of which I would have added to the Mama. It came cooked just about medium, which is how I would have ordered it anyway, so that was not a problem, but I still regret not adding mustard, mayo, lettuce and tomato. Anyway, the burger was cooked with a nice sear on the outside, almost a crisp caramelization of the beef, which, to me, adds a fantastic layer to the taste. That, combined with the grilled onions and mushrooms, made me all but forget about needing any other condiments. The slice of Swiss was warmed but not melted. Something they could easily correct by placing a lid over the burger as it finishes cooking. The bun was big and fluffy. It was slightly toasted, enough that I made it through the meal using only my hands. However, one person at the table said it fell apart for them. Another person simply ate it with a fork from the beginning. Personally, I think it's one of the best burgers in the area. I understand everyone has different taste; one persons "sear" is another persons "burnt," and a half-pounder cannot be served "rare" and still be "seared" (unless it's shaped like a meatball). I've been eating at Hodges for years and i can honestly say that not once have i ever had a bad meal here. Their prices are good and the Burgers their known for are definitely one of the best I've ever had. My personal favorite is the Black and Blue Burger. If you don't like the Blue cheese, bacon and Cajun seasoning that's on this one they have a large selection of Burgers and their all hugh and everything on it is top quality and fresh. Of course their menu consists of allot more then just Burgers, they have a good variety, I've had their steaks and fish as well and their equally as good as the Burgers. If you havnt eaten at Hodges before I'm confident that once you do you'll be adding them to your list of favorites and you'll be writing a 5 star review on them next. ENJOY!!! read more

What can I say about Hodge's in Barberton? Amazing burgers, friendly service, fresh cut fries, and great atmosphere. This place does not look like much from the road and you may find yourself questioning whether you want to venture into what looks like a dive bar. Fear not, and step on in for some of the best burgers in Ohio. My 4 year old son and I walked in and sat ourselves. Within a minute, a smiling waitress took our drink order and highlighted the specials. My son ordered a Faygo Redpop, which I hadn't seen in years. I ordered the Big Hodge, which was their take on a Big Mac and a basket of fries to split with my son. The burger was Devine; it was juicy, perfectly cooked, and expertly spiced. My son and I almost came to blows about who was going to finish the rest of it. The Fries were also epic. They were fresh cut, with the skin on, perfectly fried and served with Malt vinegar. Delicious! There was a Browns game on in the background with a large group of people gathered together to watch. They had brought in countless plates if cookies and desserts. Our waitress, sensing my son's desire for sweets, grabbed him a couple of cookies and a piece of candy. It was a very nice touch. The other burgers on the menu looked delicious as well. Stopped there last night with a group of 6. They reserved a table for us for 7pm but due to an alcohol related delay we got there quite late but were happy to see we still had a table. It has been years since I had been here. It is a Barberton staple. Their claim to fame is the burgers. It was as good as I remembered. Fresh meat. So juicy ask for triple napkins. Sad to say the service was a 1 star. After unsuccessfully trying to flag the server down for a refill I gave up and carried my cup to the bar. It was a slow night 1/3 full at best. So this place is honestly not somewhere I would normally stop. But a bunch of locals were talking it up so I figured I'd roll the dice. The menu is limited to burgers and a few other sandwiches, but the burgers are on point. We both enjoyed our specialty burgers. Beers were priced how you would expect at a local pub. So i kept hearing about how great there burgers are so i took my kids to try them out. My daughter was the only one who ordered a burger but when she took her first bite into it, a crap load of grease came falling out all over. Her bottom bun was very soggy from so much grease she took it off. Plus i dont know how anyone else feels about hunting but i dont think staring at a "once was a beautiful creature's" head mounted up on the wall while im eating a nice scenery. We attended the Barberton Mum Festival yesterday, and as we were walking around looking at all the vendors, we noticed the great smell of hamburgers. We didn't plan on eating at the festival but the smell was amazing so we just had to try one. WOW, it was truly the best hamburger I've ever eaten. The burger was large, juicy, and cooked perfectly.
