While going through my reviews, I was shocked and dismayed that I had never posted a review of the Original location of Bob's Hamburg. This place is an Akron institution, and everyone should check it out. Now, I was going to post an update to my review due to a recent visit when I discovered I had never reviewed it, so I'll just tell you about that experience. I stopped in with my six year old after going to the zoo recently. It's perfect for a zoo trip, I think it's less than a five minute drive. It was a bit of an odd time, and we ended up having the restaurant to ourselves. We sat at the bar, and my son ordered a root beer (Bob's own label), a hot dog and fries. I ordered a Bob's Double Cheeseburger with everything, and a side of onion rings. It had been a while since I had been there, and I honestly don't think I've taken my son before. When we pulled in he said it doesn't look special. I told him it's iconic and a throw back, which I don't think he understood. So we are seated at the bar, and I'll say he thought it was pretty cool that he could watch our food being cooked like 4 feet away. He LOVED the hot dog, it's big, I think a quarter pound. He's usually pretty picky on fries, but he ate quite a bit of them, then wanted to take them home, lol. Now on to my food. If you've never had a Bob's Burger before, you are missing out. They are smashed and griddled and just delicious! An Everything is Onion, Pickle, Lettuce, Bob's Sauce, which is like this tomatoey, relishy thin sauce with a bit of tang to it, and Stray Dog mustard. Boy, the combination of the sauce and mustard, with the crunch of the veg and the gooey cheese and smashed, well seasoned patties is just about perfect in my opinion. Certainly a great burger, one of the best in the area imo. And the onion rings are just amazing! Hand battered per order, fried and crunchy, the onion is soft. Without a doubt my favorite in the area! I would be remiss too to not mention the staff. Our waitress was amazing, talking to my kid, asking him questions, just being so nice to him. There were several other people that worked there that came out and talked to him too. It was great! And when we left, my son couldn't quit talking about how special that place was after all! read more

My how the mighty have fallen. This place used to make the best burgers I've had anywhere hands down. In the past several years, ownership has changed hands 3-4 times and they've gotten further from what made them so good each time. I visited today and it will be my last attempt. There are several things you can do to ruin a great burger and they seem intent on checking all of the boxes. Weird, grainy and overly sweet "house made" ketchup: Check Oversized bun that is dense and almost stale? Check Horrible locally made pickles? Check Hopping on board with the weird trend of putting some of the condiments on the top bun and some on the bottom bun? Check I could go on, but nothing about the food at this place resembles anything they served during the glory days that allowed them to stay in business for multiple decades. Some people don't understand the concept of "If it ain't broke..". Too many Food Network style ideas with very poor execution. As soon as I saw the word "confit" in the description of today's special burger, I should have turned around and left. read more

Burger was very good. One of the better ones I've had in the area and I've been trying a lot of them. They make their own ketchup but I did not like it, apparently it's a new recipe. Fries were good and I ate them with malt vinegar. It's an old diner style, very cute and historic. They have amazing bottled soda. We tried the black cherry, root beer and cream soda. I don't like cream soda but my friend who does said it was really good. Both root beer and black cherry were great. The lady working was sweet and told us about some of the history of the place. She was fun to talk to and nice. Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is I left hungry and spent $16 on a burger, fries and a bottle of soda. read more

Have read about this place on Reddit as the best burger in the area for years, so finally decided to give it a try. The burger was good. But I would say it was warm and not hot. I watched it sit on the counter for 5 min until the waitress plated it. My fried Mushrooms were "ok". I got about 8 small mushrooms for $8, so not a great value. I ordered a Jamoca shake and my wife ordered an iced tea....neither of which ever showed up. So we had to have them removed from the our bill. This place is like 10x20....yet the waitress never asked how everything was....or I would have reminded her about our drinks. All in all, food was just ok and service was poor. It's like they care more about DoorDash orders than people sitting right there in front of them. I don't think I'll be back. read more

We ate here after a magazine declared them the best hole-in-the-wall hamburger joint in Ohio. Boy was that right! The building isn't much to look at, but don't be fooled. The burger is one of the best I've had. Top 3 for sure. And the people there are just as excellent. They know where they're working and totally embrace it to provide a great experience! read more

Nice little greasy spoon with great burgers and fries Service is very personable and helpful. They even had their own labeled root beer and other local favorite bottled drinks to enjoy wit your meal. Bob's is an Akron institution. Located on East Ave in Kenmore, it has been there since 1931. I don't think the building has changed since then as it is small, cramped, and not a luxurious facility. However, the burgers are solid, the fries are fresh, and your can just feel the history. A nice stop if you are in the 330. read more

There's nothing I didn't enjoy, the service was spot on, old time soda flavors, the old school diner interior, and last but not least the food. Hit up this spot for a little roadside (i.e., outside) dining at this old-school diner style burger stand. Staff was super-friendly...went inside to place my order and they served me out at the picnic tables by the street. I ordered a signature burger, fries and a vanilla milkshake. Service took a bit of time, but I know it was because they were making my food fresh, so all good! Their burgers are served smashburger style off a flattop grill, so they come out all charred and juicy. The Bonanza burger was quite good with a mix of mayo and BBQ sauces on top along with crispy bacon and shredded lettuce. Their fries are shoestring style and (surprisingly) held their heat and were well seasoned. The vanilla milkshake was kind of thin and on the small side, but had a traditional soda fountain type flavor to it...seemed like ice cream and milk blended together. A bit on the pricey side for what you get, but a great bit of nostalgia and a solid burger and fries. Would definitely return. read more

Dang, you set the bar high...this is going to be a tough competition. You are being graded on overall taste, juiciness of meat, flavor of the burger, the bun, fries, and overall appearance. This little beauty is tucked in Akron and if you're in the area please stop by (hours 7-4) Fresh burgers, I'm talking about balled up ground beef that they Smash and cooked right there in front of you. No Frozen patties just fresh goodness burgers. I drove a half hour from Medina just to come here again. And I'll probably visit every 3 weeks or so. Wow this was a fun little place. I got a warn you, it's kind of hot in there. They have one little window unit cranking out of the wall but it's just not able to keep up with the heat. I did stop in and hang out for an hour while my son was in an interview. I saw this on yelp and I had to give it a try. The owner was there and we chatted for a while, he was quite nice and engaging. He also made me fresh sauerkraut balls which would give you five stars all day long. Look people, this is not find dining this is a diner. This is a five star diner it is legit as it comes. I literally submitted this to triple D while I was sitting there because it was so legit. So I hung out for a while and worked off my laptop and talked on my phone and in between appointments I chatted with the owner and watched the people come and go and I would be back there in a minute. In fact I stopped there when I was in town the next month but oddly they were closed even though they were supposed to be open. These are strange times with Covid so I'm not gonna hold that against them. I really hope they didn't close down because that is an epic diner that has been around for a lifetime. The Good: Really good burgers. Meat, toppings, and bun all tasted very fresh. The fries were good as well. The chili fries with onion was a hit. My son loved his burger and cleaned the plate. I was so excited by the hype on social media. We finally went and ordered. I'm sure this won't effect the business at all. But I was extremely disappointed in the food. We paid .... get ready-- $42 for the food pictured. The burgers had ZERO seasoning. Zero. My husbands burger was $14 and he is the least picky person on this earth. He said his burger had no flavor. If I had to guess. I would say this is a joint where locals get it good. (Or better) I would say they had the ability to do well, but perhaps that day they were so busy they didn't? Idk. First time having bobs and I LOVED it. Better than swensons and WAY better than Ralleys. The root beer was absolutely amazing and served with a chilled mug. Very refreshing. I got the double cheeseburger and I could barely eat half. Even though these are smash burgers, they are VERY filling. But boy, do I love smash burgers and they make them perfectly. Kayla got the knife and fork cheeseburger and amazing the people there by devouring it in less than 10 minutes. Show off. This vintage Akron diner has been serving excellent burgers since 1931 and continues its time honored tradition in 2022! Located along a rather uninspiring stretch of East Ave, you could easily drive past this unassuming landmark, but to do so would be a shame as you would be depriving yourself of a taste of local history. The interior is small yet inviting, consisting of a counter with stools and around three booths. The grill sits behind the counter and provides a pleasant view of your food being cooked to order. The menu offers a range of basic options and signature burgers as well as chicken and fish. Now, if you're not a meateater don't have a cow. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they offer a plant-based wonder called the 'Beyond Burger!' My food came out nicely wrapped and provided instant gratification on the first bite! Bob's provides consolation in knowing that classic American fare is not hard to find in a sea of fast food chains. So, step back in time and enter a whole new dimension of flavor! read more

This IS NOT the same Bob's Hamburg that I have known and enjoyed for 60 years. The burgers have completely changed. Different meat, different bun, different special sauce. I took an old friend there and both of us ended up in the bathroom all night. I discovered that the owners changed recently and like I said, it's not the same Bob's anymore. I will not be back and I have to advise people to go there at your own risk. I'd try the Bob's at Rays Place in Highland Square before ever going back to East Avenue again. We've heard about Bob's since moving up here four years ago. It seems to be a kind of local legend in the food business here. We finally took a chance to see how things might turn out. The burgers were fine. Well cooked and fully stocked out on the condiments. The fries were soggy and the onions rings are overly battered to the point of a burnt flavor rather than crisp and light. Although I live in Chicago, I commute to the Akron area monthly or so. I discovered Bobs and make it a point of grabbing lunch there every trip Simple, great tasting burgers cooked the same way they were 75 years ago. Food is good, prices are totally reasonable! UPDATE I'm never going to this place again On their website they say that they close at six on Saturday all over the web it says 4 o'clock I showed up at 3:31 and was informed that they closed at 3:30. I told the cook that I couldn't easily come back since I was from Chicago and could you please make me a burger? He just refused and informed me that the grill was already cleaned and he wasn't going to cook me anything. Keep in mind even with his story, there's no way he could've cleaned the grill in one minute. I wonder what excuse he would've used if I came in five minutes earlier. The food is good but I don't give my money to people who treat me like that so I'm never going back. There's other places that treat me with some dignity. I am so glad that I saw this listed in 'best of'. What a gem. So before I go on telling why this place is awesome, let me shorten this for the sensitive, sipping tea, vegan, vegetarian crowd. This is awesome! Okay, booths all around the edges, hold 4 folks. Counter stools with lots of space. I recommend the counter. You will get to chat it up with the owner and the fry cook. They have coke products in cans. Grab the menu and pick your poison. I know you have looked at the photos, and yes, that is it. An old flat top that is 100 years old and seasoned, buns toast underneath. Cheese Burgers, 1, 2, 3 or four patties. All smash burgers. All the way or to order your way. They have a Bob Sauce to replace the Ketchup. I had a triple. It is a big burger. Double would probably do the average hungry person. All I can tell you is you need to experience it. It is the best burger I have had in a long time. Well deserved 'best of'. Onion rings, these are made the old fashioned way, not beer batter or frozen. Fresh, every day! They are awesome! French fries hand cut. They also had great hand dipped fried mushrooms, that were better then any restaurant you have been in. So, what does a triple, a single, a rodeo burger, onion rings, fries and mushrooms cost? $23.00. Do not go for the price. Visited Bob's after seeing a clip of it on New Day Cleveland and seeing the raving reviews on Yelp! Not an impressive sight from the outside as we pulled into the driveway. I'll admit that this isn't a place I would have ever thought of trying as a casual passerby. Their big sign outside boasts that they've been "famous since 1931" and it sure looks like not much has changed with the location since 1931. It's very small inside with a lunch counter and 4 booths. But here's the kicker... looking at it from the outside, and even just walking in you'd think the place is filthy. It's actually very clean! Once we sat down and panned the surroundings, it really resembles more of a food truck setup. They have one tiny grill that they make all their magic on (see photos). Onto the food. It took us nearly 45 minutes to get our food as the place was packed. Again, having only one grill and one cook, don't come in here expecting fast food. Quite the contrary, actually. Their burgers are NOT your typical pre-made, frozen, slap on the grill and serve. They ball these fresh, non-frozen burgers and flatten them on the grill with an iron right when you order. They make them old-school! I forget what it's called on the menu, but I had the jalapeno burger with pepper jack cheese. Deliciously juicy and well-made! The best part, it was only $5!!! Again... five dollars!!! I could've eaten 2 of these for that price! Also, got the onion rings. I was skeptical at first, because most places overbread their rings. Not here! Perfectly lightly breaded and tasty! Moral of the story? Don't judge a restaurant by it's exterior. This burger joint is legit! Your typical old school diner with really great food! The onion rings were crispy and crunchy, the fries were tasty and the burger was big enough to share as well as the side of pickle it came with. First off the place has a great old school feel. I ordered online for pickup. Everything went very smoothly and my order was waiting on me when I got there. I have been waiting to try a burger from here for months. My order was correct and all condiments were there. The burger was big and filling. Also it was cooked well. I only have two criticisms. The fries and the burgers were completely under seasoned but tasted like there was no salt at all. Which left the food very bland. Also it was a wee bit high on the price. Never been here but it's so close to my house. I would give it another go. Maybe with different toppings. Can't beat the old school location. It's very Akron. Service was efficient and friendly. The chocolate malt...OH EM GEE. No one ever mixes the malt right including Swenson's (and I love their shakes) so 5 star malts here. The iffy. The onion rings are hand breaded. Simply too thick and chunky for my taste. The fries seemed like they possibly needed longer in the fryer. They were just kinda off. The burgers? Not convinced. I feel like I needed more sauce. Wouldn't do the lettuce next time, made everything cold (yeah that's me being picky!). High quality lightly grilled bun. Well done toppings and plenty of them. But the actual burger was just bland. Almost no taste. They could cook the seasoning up a notch. That being said, we went at around 1:30 in the afternoon and while there was never a line, there was never a free seat either. The day before, I had the Galley Boy and rings at Swenson's. Bob's is hands down the way to go and well worth trekking off the beaten path for a taste. The joint is a cozy diner with a few booths and counter seating. It was almost at capacity when we went in for lunch on a Saturday and we didn't need to wait. I just discovered Bob's Hamburg about a year ago. And I'm angry at myself for waiting so long. These are the best burgers and sides in Akron. The place is like going back in time. It's small, funky, and fantastic. Everything is scratch made and so so good. The burgers aren't over spiced or over worked. There's nothing hiding in the beef. There are so many options for toppings. No matter what you choose, the bun somehow manages to stay intact while still being fresh and soft. My go-to burger is the undefeated with an egg on top. The sauerkraut balls are my favorite, but you can't beat the fresh battered onion rings and mushrooms, or the fries. If the big burger and generous side doesn't put you into a food coma, the hand dipped shakes will. Oh yeah, there are soups too. Surprise! They're awesome. There are some other well known Akron burger joints, but none of them can compete with Bob's Hamburg! read more

This place is an Akron institution! A must-eat if you are looking for the quintessential Akron spots. A no-frills, old fashioned diner with great burgers and fries. The burgers don't have any "special" ingredients. Just good, old-fashioned burgers and fresh cut fries. Warning: when you get there you will wonder if it's at the right place. The building looks very run down and very small. The neighborhood seems very sketchy. To me, that just adds to the ambiance and feel. Once you get inside it is much nicer. I loved it! I always put fries on any sandwich I get, no matter where it is. I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a burger that already includes the fries on it! It was very good. Not life-changing, but exactly what I want when I think of a good, no-frills burger. Lastly, the price definitely makes this a no-brainer 5 star. Burgers for $4 or $5! This little divey diner is one of Akron's hidden gems. I'm not sure if it's the best burger I have ever eaten, but it's up there. It's the epitome of no-frills dining, so you have to be ok with a little grease and grime. The inside appears to have never been updated, but it adds to the charm. I had a burger and fries and a milkshake and was really happy with everything. The waitress was nice-ish, but I imagine the regulars she has to deal with working there, so I can't blame her for a little bit of crassness. Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced. One thing worth noting, the bathroom situation is not that great. They are accessed from the outside of the building, old gas station style with a key, so I recommend just holding it if you can.
