It's funny how you can so easily stumble upon places that you never knew existed! While on my lunch break from working an off-duty detail in Kenmore I drove past what appeared to be a small diner. As I was about to walk in I paused... when I saw the cash only sign. So, after going to a nearby ATM I returned and walked inside to a lively establishment with roughly 8-10 patrons. I took a seat at the counter, which was reminiscent of what you might find at a truck stop diner or 24 hour joint tucked away in a small corner of a neighborhood. I was immediately greeted with a smile by a pleasant young lady who handed me a menu. Let me tell you, of the many things that stand out about this restaurant, the prices are the most noticable aspect as they are lower and more reasonable than comparable venues. After glancing over the menu, I ordered a coffee and two eggs scrambled with cheese, home fries, and wheat toast. The coffee was smooth and bold, which surprised me as most restaurant coffee tastes like muddy water. I asked the server and was told that a special blend is used and roasted locally. The eggs were perfect while the homefries were crisp but but overdone. Last but not least, the toast was buttered, warm, and paired well with the eggs. Talk about a quinessential American breakfast! You can estimate the cost of food, but you can't put a price on quality and great service!

Driving along Kenmore Blvd by SR224, there are lackluster industrial buildings on the south and east side of the road and a tired neighborhood of small but maintained houses interspersed with foreclosures and trap houses to the north and west. Tucked between these two worlds on the northwest side is a small grey building which houses a family diner filled with Mickey Mouse kitsch and some of the tastiest eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast I've had in the past 3+ decades. My breakfast companion announced that the toast was 5 star, the coffee was very good, and even the water was good, lacking the metallic aftertaste so prevalent in the southwest side of Akron. The diner is plain, homey, cash only, and the bathrooms were worn but clean. The waitress took the order and served us with a gentle warmth and attentiveness. Between service she chatted with the local couple about national news - the small size makes overhearing conversations inevitable- and it became apparent that this diner was one of those linchpins of the neighborhood, keeping the area connected to its roots while serving passers through.

Basic breakfast menu, great prices. Bring cash though, they don't take credit. Place has been in Kenmore since I was a kid.

It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Akron but it's off the beaten path. All locals (except me) in here. When I went (10AM Friday) the place was almost full, and I was dining alone, so I sat at the counter, happily next to the kitchen. To look at the kitchen was like looking inside a bee hive, bustling with activity but barely a sound. I could just make out what was being calmly stated "2 Silver Dollar, Salmon, Country Fried, 2 Over Easy..." It was fun to watch, but what was important was the output. It took just over 6 minutes from the time I order until it was sitting in front of me, and everything was perfect! The waitresses were so efficient. I saw my order hit the window and in about 12 seconds it was delivered. They were so customer focused, they were (jokingly) fighting over refilling my tea. When I was done and paid for I waited outside for Uber to pick me up (3 min). I looked back on what I'd just experienced, and snapped a picture of the two parking lots of cars for Fred's Diner. I counted and there were 32 cars at Fred's. OK maybe 10 were staff so 22 cars for customers, let's say on average there were 2 customers per car (remember I walked here so no car for me). By my calculation, Fred's was feeding 44 people every 30 minutes or so. No wonder they're only open 4 days a week and only for breakfast - lunch. I calculate they might serve 3200 meals in those 4 days, and then take 3 days off to get ready for the next week. I love this place. Wish I lived here so I could come more often.

My daughter and I both had off today, so we decided to hit up Fred's for breakfast. I had a craving…read morefor steak and eggs and she went with the corned beef hash. Both plates were very good. I particularly appreciate that they use real potatoes for their hashbrowns, not the frozen/freeze dried crap most places serve up these days. The service was great, coffee was strong, and our bellies are fullllll.

The booths remind you of sitting in a 57 Chevy. There are Elvis, Marilyn and many other stars from that era, idolized on the walls. The menu is classic American diner food. If you've never been before, you must order the He Man Breakfast Platter - it's a humongous breakfast sampler that will not disappoint! The Lamp Post is an eastside tradition.

Took a chance as we had never heard of it but the open 24 hours a day sign beckoned is in. What a surprise! A cute retro diner vibe. Something led me to order the gyro and it was phenomenal, not Greece level, but they griddled both the gyro meat and the pita so it was piping hot and then layered with cold tzatziki, lettuce, onion and tomato.... Sooo good. Fries were crispy, hot, and plentiful on everyone's plate. The kids chicken strip meal was unbelievably crispy and juicy and flavorful. Two burgers were ordered and both were loved. And even at the late hour service was friendly and attentive. The only thing keeping that 5th star is the whole place and all the condiments etc on the table need wiped down and the floors swept and mopped. I tried not to look too closely at anything as I enjoyed my delish dinner. But if you've never been you should try it!
