I went to Hobos for the fried fish, Cod plate. It was terrible, I dont know if it had been sitting out for a few hours, as it was not freshly made. The sides were not hot, or even warm, again food that must have been sitting out. Normally their fish is outstanding. I was very disappointed. The waitress / bartender as i sat at the bar, was getting ready for the change in staff. She was uninterested in me, and when I asked for silverware which was out of my reach. She told me to ask another patron sitting at the bar. Really.... Disappointed will be going to Culverts for my fried fish from now on. THERE COD IS DELICIOUS!!! read more

Located in the St Peter's American Legion Post in Old Town. The best food, servers/tenders, and ownership. Food portions and price, quick service. One of my favorite places to socialize and eat. Also has a very popular takeout service. The only aspect I'm not fond of is the overly loud music. Conversations are hard as people shout or talk too loudly to be heard. I cannot give them enough positive feedback on their speed of service! I've never ever been somewhere that is consistently fast the way this place is. It's always SO fast and servers are so sweet. First timers--as we were--need to know the hostess station is in the middle of the building and you need to sign yourself in to be seated. If you park in the back lot that's not an issue because the entrance takes you to the hostess desk. If you enter from the front on Main Street you'll have to walk through other diners to the check-in desk. Past that, this is a restaurant rather than an American Legion hall. And one with an extensive menu. From several burger options I chose the Gas Can Patty--a 1/2-pound meat chunk cooked more or less to order and including cooked onions and Swiss cheese on toasted rye bread. It was fine but I wasn't asked and forgot to mention I wanted lettuce and pickle on the burger. The accompanying green beans were well cooked but lacked seasoning. I get to the St. Louis area a few times a year at best and always swing by at least twice per trip. My parents have been regulars since the place opened and are treated very well, and I appreciate it very much. Upon walking in the line, it looked a bit intimidating, so I almost walked in and walked back out but I told myself if the line is this long it has to be worth the wait and it was. The sever immediately came over for our orders before I could even get comfortable in my seat, and I knew this was going to be a great place.i ordered a dinner item called a half a cluck which is exactly what it sounds like along with 2 sides, which I ordered double fries. We went here on a Sunday for lunch. Pretty much stayed all day enjoying drinks. Service was prompt, attentive, friendly and helpful. Food was tasty and priced well. We ordered fried cauliflower, nachos and pizza. The cauliflower was AMAZING, def order these - cheesy, crispy and the accompanying ranch dressing was also tasty! The pizza is a thin crust which is not my fave by preference, but it was light and good too. The others with me RAVED about the pizza and really loved it. This was our first time eating at this semi hidden gem ( at least to us it's hidden ). The place is not fancy, but we didn't expect that at all. Being an American Legion hall we expected a cozy laid back atmosphere and we weren't disappointed. The menu has a lot to chose from but what we have been told is the fried chicken is the go to here. So my wife being a fried chicken lover opted for that. I decided on the Rueben sandwich with fries. Her chicken came with mashed potatoes and gravy and Cole slaw. She LOVED it. She said it was delicious and makes you want to order more. My Rueben was very good, bread was perfect and just the right size. I wasn't a big fan of the fries but they weren't bad. I can't remember who told me about this place, but I am glad they did. I got the "Freddie the Freeloader " (breaded pork loin sandwich). It was a nice sized sandwich. I got fries for my side, but hardly ate any, because I was full. I think homemade chips would have been a better choice. I may go no bun next time, get mashed as the side, and white gravy on the side.
