Hiyakawa is a diamond that sparkles with a quiet confidence in a city overflowing with shimmer and shine. 5 stars really doesn't do it justice. After hearing rave reviews from friends since its inception, I didn't think twice when deciding where to have dinner for my 40th birthday. Despite going in with high expectations, they were somehow exceeded across the board. From the warm greeting upon entry, to the effortlessly playful spirit embodied by each and every member the wait staff, to Chef Jamie eagerly bringing us a second round of dessert, it couldn't be more clear that this team loves what they do. I've worked in both casual and fine dining, explored restaurants around the world, and extensively studied the work and philosophy of Danny Meyer. Hiyakawa seamlessly weaves elegance with fun, and I'd be hard pressed to come up with a handful of other restaurants I've been to that compare in the hospitality department. Oh, and then there's the food! THE FOOD! I could say so much about the food. But, I'll control myself and keep it brief. Everything was amazing, simple as that. The nigiri was mouth-watering, the wagyu; world class. You really can't go wrong. Two dishes that I'll specifically mention, for they could easily - and tragically - fly under the radar, are the Eel Tempura and the Lamb Chops. The Eel Tempura infused the perfect dose of Umami to our first round. I've had Lamb Chops at easily 100 restaurants, and I'm pretty sure these are my #1 favorite. I think both of these dishes are seasonal, but if they have them, I highly recommend them. As for the sushi, there's not much I need to say. They serve top shelf fish with expert preparation. They do have quite a variety, so I'd suggest taking the opportunity to try something new! Given that it was my birthday, Chef Jamie prepared a full spread of desserts, each beautifully presented, and their flavor just as vibrant. Fortunately, we were the last remaining guests, so Jamie was able to hang out and see just how much we appreciated her sugar skills, as it took us all of a few minutes to devour every bit, prompting her to rush back to the kitchen to throw together one last hurrah, which was literally and figuratively, the icing on the cake of an absolutely incredible dining experience... Along with one of the Miguel's (Hiya has TWO, and they're both fantastic) sneakily printing out a photo of me to use as a garnish on my drink. We left with our bellies - and our hearts - full.
Wow, truly a 5 star experience at Hiyakawa. We were warmly greeted, led to our seats at the sushi bar, and introduced to all 3 chefs. The woodwork in the restaurant is just as beautiful as it looks in pictures. The curved, blonde wood and soft lighting set the tone for a perfect date night. We did the chef's tasting menu, which included a little bit of everything: warm bites, hand roll, sashimi, nigiri, and dessert. All fish is flown in from Japan, and our chef gave us insightful, detailed explanations of every dish. He answered all of our questions, made us laugh, and overall provided an amazing experience. We also added the wagyu gyoza, and will absolutely be adding it every time! We chose Hiyakawa as our first date after the birth of our child, as we wanted something special to celebrate. Hiyakawa is an expensive night out, but we found value in both the food and service. We will be back one day to celebrate another occasion!
As expected, everything was exceptional. The service and atmosphere were great. The staff is attentive, refilling your water and removing plates once you finish eating without you needing to ask or look around. All small details that make the experience all the more worthwhile. The food was delicious and you can definitely taste it's of good quality. However, in my opinion, there was a lack of a 'wow' factor. Something that makes you reminisce after and reels you back in to eat there again. Maybe they do have that dish and I just didn't get to try it. If they develop that signature dish, I know this location is capable of a Michelin star. If you're around this location and celebrating a special occasion, it's worth checking it out.
An omakase EXPERIENCE. My friends took me out for a birthday dinner and we came on a Sunday evening. Not much can make me come out to Miami but this sushi sure can. From the service to the quality of fish, everything was five stars. I came with three friends and we ended up getting a sake bottle compliment our courses for dinner. We just ordered a bottle recommended by the chef and it did not disappoint, although it did hurt our wallets. The courses were all great and the chef was super personable and walked us through each course. The interior of the restaurant itself was a thing of beauty! Overall a five star experience and great for special occasions.
We sat at the sushi bar and had a great experience. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu, and the service overall was amazing. Even the owner came by to thank us for visiting, which was a nice touch. The sushi was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the restaurant itself has a modern, chic vibe.
I'll admit that I went into a bit of sushi fatigue when trying to decide on an excellent omakase experience when visiting Miami in December. Luckily, I made the right decision booking the chef counter at Hiyakawa! Located in a business area, the interior is beautiful with wooded finishes and a nice but not fussy vibe. The staff were super helpful and we appreciated the delicious selection of sake to accompany our experience. It did not disappoint, (and was one of the more affordable options that I found). The fish was all fresh and delicious, with the highlights being the sea urchin and all the items with caviar on top. We opted for two extra courses and one was a hand roll with caviar that was so delicious I shed a few tears of complete and utter joy. A wonderful experience that I will be back to experience!
We were able to get a last minute reservation at the chefs table/sushi bar on Wednesday, December 10. We had an absolutely wonderful experience. 5-star service, attention to details, top quality and variety of nigiri available were the highlights. For example, chef had dishes I have never had like the mature yellowtail that is significantly tastier than the yellowtail you get in other - even Michelin star - sushi restaurants. Wine, Champagne, and Sake menu also great. Truly a special experience and highly highly recommend.
- Fantastic service - Quite small inside and quiet - The chawanmushi was to die for - If you get the platter, you can tell them what you don't want and they'll make sure to avoid it - I've had better quality for cheaper prices elsewhere - The level of effort put into creating the dishes is definitely noticeable - Good for celebrations and not good for big groups
Unreservedly one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. One could hardly call it a sushi restaurant since half the serving were cooked or other dishes than sushi. But the fish itself was fantastic as well. Also one of the best sakes I've had, Dewazakura, Mountain Cherry, from Yamagata Prefecture. The chefs were friendly and personable. The Hitachiwagyu was fantastic, I had three dishes of this Wagyu. If you go, get all the Wagyu supplements. Of special note was the Uni chansons and the makiage. Special thanks to the Yuki Otoko Brewery representatives and their Yeti Sake and two other sakes that they shared quite generously. Domoarigatogozaimasu!
An exceptional, elegant omakase experience. I caught a ride to the restaurant as parking in the area seemed limited to nonexistent. I would have appreciated some dedicated parking. Once inside you can sense a lot of care and effort went into the modern, intimately lit design. They have a small number wait / lounge area as we got there a few minutes early. After a few minutes they were ready for us at the main chef table bar. I'd frame it as semi-selective. You share the space with a few other diners (not too many) but are facing the chef preparation area. Other omakases I've visited have a more private area, which is something I think is a nice feel. Still, semiprivate worked in this design. Outside of that, the food was simply phenomenal. The chef was friendly and clearly loved what he did. Ingredients fresh and uniquish. They had great service and otherwise paid good attention and were as accommodating as possible for food allergies. If the opportunity arises, I would return in a heartbeat. My two favorites included the caviar scallop sushi as well as the hand roll. Wow the sushi is fresh. Two additional notes: I felt they gave enough food to be satisfied. I also don't think they cut corners with quality or quantity. For example, they had a high quality uni (sea urchin) and were generous with this delicacy not stingy. This was incredibly welcome as some other omakases leave you too hungry after, which is head scratching for such an expensive experience. Second, if you order sake, you're in for a nice surprise... they have such beautiful ceramics throughout and they bring out a selection of cups for you to choose. After factoring ambiance, service, food quality, food portions, plating, chef friendliness as well as staff attentiveness and some bonuses, I'd say this omakase is worth it if it's under your consideration.
Came in on a Thursday for the omakase experience. Overall for the price point, they are lacking in service and attention. The fish fresh and delicious, but nothing out of this world. I would probably come back but not for the omakase experience. The ambiance was nice and lively for a Thursday.
Best sushi in Miami! We loved everything. Food is amazing. We ordered sake and went with the full experience so ordered the set menu and it was phenomenal! Service was fast, friendly but professional. Ambience is cosy, cute, and homie. Def going back tohiyakawa!
In March 2020, I was supposed to go to Japan for cherry blossoms and sushi. Well, that didn't happen. But tonight, this 17-course omakase dinner made me look forward to the the day I actually get to go. Amazing matcha, sushi, sashimi, chawanmushi, and wagyu wonderfully plated and presented. Definitely give this place a try if you're ever in Miami! Book the chef's counter to talk to Royce (9 yrs a sushi chef) and Masa (20 yrs a sushi chef). Combined, their sushi knowledge is older than I am! Friendly staff, great service, delicious food, beautiful space. Can't ask for any more.

Incredible dinner experience celebrating my birthday with a few friends! Highly recommend sitting at the sushi counter. Space is gorgeous and the service was top notch. We got there a bit before our reservation time, and they let us sit in the smaller dining area as we waited for our spots to open up. We all did the $200 tasting and we were all pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the bites. It's 8 courses that range from a nigiri sampler, small bites, and dessert. Most memorable were the clam broth, beef loin and carrots, and the fatty tuna nigiri with caviar on top. The fatty tuna nigiri with caviar was the main reason I wanted the tasting! There is an à la carte menu too, but it was a lot easier just letting the chefs portion out our meal. Would definitely check them out and enjoy a superb evening out! read more
What a great experience from start to finish! When friends suggested we drive down to Miami for sushi- I was thinking there were plenty of sushi places right around our house. But I wasn't prepared for the beautiful deco, outstanding service and great tasting food at Hiyakawa. We found street parking which was no small feat in this neighborhood. When we walked into the restaurant we were warmly greeted and seated. We were early so we pretty much had our choice of seats but the place filled up quickly so make a reservation! Since there were 4 of us- we got to taste a wide range of the menu, from rolls, to nigiri to gyoza and even the wagyu beef kabobs. Each dish delicious- each with it's own distinct flavor and textures. The restaurant is beautiful inside with lots of light curved wood creating a very dramatic dining experience. All in all, a lovely evening with friends in Miami. Sometimes you really do need a chance of locale! read more

Such an amazing omakase experience. Yes, it's pricey, but the fish quality is superb and the service is beyond par. They change the menu based on the season and available ingredients. We were lucky to get some firefly squid. The artistry and experience is sooo worth it. Someone commented on the bathrooms, which is just ridiculous. I can't believe someone would complain about them in another review. Absurd. Truly. They were just fine. The fish was buttery and fresh. I can't wait to come back and try their a la carte menu! read more

As very avid sushi lovers, my wife and I were excited to try Hiyakawa. We specifically like traditional sushi which is dressed and presented as nigiri. As the rating shows - we both thought that the food is just OK. The positive highlights would be the design of the space and the service. Both are excellent. Unfortunately, the food is outrageously priced and falls well short of expectations. Compared to other local sushi restaurants such as Uchi, Itamae, and Scratch - Hiyakawa is not worth a repeat visit. My wife and I ordered a lot of the nigiri on the menu (see photo). The server brings you soy sauce and a brush to season the fish as you like. I personally didn't care for this and wish that the sushi chefs would already dress the fish as they see fit. When you charge $25 for a single piece, I would expect the fish to be dressed and have a flavor profile. Unfortunately, no sushi piece really stood out and there's nothing original here. Yes, they import the fish directly from Japan but today that's table stakes for any high-end sushi restaurant. Overall - the food here is OK but definitely not worth the price. You have a lot better options. read more

Amazing experience. Went the a-la-carte route in the dining room instead of omakase and no regrets. Miguel is an amazing server who took his time to explain and offer suggestions --he played a big part in the experience. The chefs team is so passionate and it shows. They subtly wait for your reaction to what they now is purely exquisite bliss in a bite. Just all around amazing. Love the quiet setting and contemporary design. read more
This place is a GEM! I haven't had better sushi in the US and my Japanese friend agrees on this. Main takeaways: Make reservations; Try the chef experience; Get some sake; Enjoy amazing service and authentic atmosphere. My friends and I sat at the bar and had the Chef experience- several "surprise" courses brought out and then announced to you. The staff inquired if we had any allergies or dietary preferences. I'm pescatarian and while my friends got meat, I didn't. Amazing service! All food (which I can't pronounce now haha) tasted wonderfully. There was so so many different plates including nigiri, sushi, rolls, desert, tempura etc., and I got stuffed so I had my husband help me finish. All sushi and nigiri were very soft, tender and basically melted in the mouth. Each piece was a masterpiece. Sake was amazing. I'll definitely be back to try more things. Highly recommend! read more

We came in not very hungry, after having had a large lunch, but after eating everything we ate we realized we could've kept eating just to try every flavor and texture. The ingredients were rich and it felt very authentic. We ordered the seasonal specials, the Ebi Tempura (shrimp tempura) and the steamed salmon. The dessert was a Yuzu Sorbet and a Black Sesame Sorbet. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Miami , but book in advance because it fills up! read more

I went there for the omakase and I am glad I was able to get a reservation. COVID safety procedure: Team wearing masks- at times the mask was coming off the nose, so please tell the team to be cautious of that Social distancing- I went at opening and felt comfortable, toward the end I felt uncomfortable that people were seating too close Rating breakdown: Service: the team was very attentive and very caring. Great attention and accommodated my dietary restrictions without any complication Decor/ ambiance: very nice contemporary feel, minimalistic and very clean vibe. Food: very fresh fish-- phenomenal. The omakase was worth the price Overall- I had a great experience. Definitely recommend. Probably the best omakase I had in Miami. read more

The food was just amazing, and every piece of fish delivered was super fresh. The chef is the same guy who opened wabi sabi, so you know the quality if you have ever been there. I got the omakase dinner for two, and it includes sashimi, multiple nigiris, fried dish, a braised dish, soup, and dessert. Each piece of fish from sashimi to nigiris were just fresh as they can get. You eat the nigiris already pre-seasoned lightly with soy sauce with your hands as many traditional sushi bars have you do. From start to finish it was very enjoyable, and the staff were extremely friendly. However, i would say after looking at the a la carte menu, i feel like the value of the omakase was not quite worth the price. 200$ per person at high end sushi restaurants in west coast or nyc could get you somewhat more, at least from my memory. And i feel like if i ordered a similar amount of nigiri and sashimi a la carte, the price wouldve been lower. Nevertheless, i think the experience was worth still, just for the surprise in an omakase and how happy it made my girlfriend. Next time though, i definitely want to order a la carte from their dinning room, because everything was so damn good. read more
In a time when authentic sushi houses start serving over-sauced rolls to meet that taste buds of the new world, Hiyakawa attempts to keep thing authentic. Not sure if Miami culture can support a restaurant like this. As for the old school taste buds, this was not truly authentic. The rice does the rolls were marinated in what tasted like red wine vinegar. Wine list is limited but sake list was adequate. Food was decent but not sure if It was truly worth the $1000 dining experience for four with the kiddos. read more

I attended the collaboration dinner between Chef Alex Chang and Hiyakawa on Saturday evening. Reservations are made online and are prepaid, whether for event dinners or omakase dinners. Their dining room reservation is a la carte only. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, with the interior adorned with light wood fixtures and furnishings. We were seated at the counter and had a view of the chefs working. The dishes came out very timely and was paced well. Everything I tried was incredible! Everyone in our party enjoyed every dish, which is a huge compliment to Hiyakawa and Chef Chang. Some highlights for me included the beef tartare on homemade milk bread, citrus and avocado salad with fried seaweed, buckwheat waffle with koji cream (loved the DIY aspect here too), all of the nigiri from Hiyakawa, and both desserts - soba panna cotta with strawberry granita and Japanese whiskey cake with roasted cream, hojicha mousse, and hazelnut and granola crumble. The service was great and very attentive. The servers made sure to explain to us what each dish was and how best to enjoy. The chefs at the counter checked in on us as well. This place was great. My wife and I went for the Omakase tasting menu. The ingredients and fish tasted extremely fresh and filled with flavor. The Sardine Nigiri melted on your tongue. Uni was of perfect temperature and pure silky goodness. Chefs were friendly and professional. The place filled up nicely and ambiance remained chill. Highly recommend. read more
