Beautiful space! Wonderful and different food options. Great service. We had sushi and the wagu on a stone. My husband and I loved cooking the wagu on the stone. We had never done that before! Slightly loud and lots of families. Vibrant atmosphere with cute porch. Good drink options and quick service. Would like to go back! So many menu options.
This restaurant was soooo good. I came here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. I loved how aesthetic everything was. The food was absolutely amazing. The tuna crispy rice was the best I've ever had and the Hamachi ponzu was so good and fresh that we had to order it three different times.. I literally cant wait to go back!!!

We enjoyed the skewers, some sushi rolls and the sea bass which was to die for! Wow! The service was excellent. Our server was attentive and very respectful. He made us feel well taken care of. The ambience is bright inside the restaurant. I love the look and feel of the place although it is a little loud we did enjoy it.
We arrived around 9 PM and were initially quoted a two-hour wait, but we got lucky and were seated in under 30 minutes! The ambiance is fantastic--very well-lit and a great vibe for dinner. The food started strong; the Hamachi Crispy Rice and Brussels Sprouts were amazing. For sushi, the Spicy Tuna Roll was easily a 10/10, though the scallop sushi wasn't personally my favorite. To finish, I had the Toban Yaki, which was incredible. Our server recommended a coffee alcoholic beverage to pair with it, and the combination was perfect. Great service all around. I definitely recommend checking this place out and will absolutely be back.
Makoto was recommended to us by a friend and it was an amazing rec! We happened to be in Miami during Miami Spice and stopped in for their lunch menu. Tuna crispy rice was perfect--crispy and spicy! You HAVE to get the spicy edamame. That sweet chili soy sauce is like liquid crack--it was so addicting and I've never feened over edamame in the way I did these. For mains, my boyfriend was in love with the koji chicken breast and the XO sauce it came with. I will never pass up sushi so I had the moriawase and it was fresh and filling. The desserts were okay, I don't think I would order them a la carte, but they were beautiful! Make a reservation! They seemed to be quite busy even during lunch on a Wednesday. Makoto is one of those spots that looks beautiful in the day and night, so this would be a perfect date night spot as well!
I remember when Makoto first opened and was a small quiet eatery on the first floor. It's always been one of my favorite hideaways to have a quiet meal and I can't believe it's taken me until now to write a review. Well, it's not a quiet little hideaway anymore and even has patio seating. The flavors are still impeccable. The service is always accommodating... and the people watching is to die for. While Makoto might continue to grow, hopefully the food will never change.
Yooooo Makoto is that girl. Located on the third floor of the Bal Harbour Shops, this sleek, elegant Japanese restaurant absolutely delivered from ambiance to service to every single bite. I came here with my family, and we had the BEST experience. The space is bold and beautiful: bright colors, chic textures. It's giving elevated, but not pretentious. We were supposed to sit outside, but shoutout to the host who worked some magic and got us a table inside. It was super busy, but they still made it happen. Let's talk food, because WOW. We came ready to eat and everything was just fire. What We Had Appetizers ________________________ + Tuna Crispy Rice ($18) - 9.5/10 We ordered this twice. Crispy, piping hot rice with buttery, flavorful tuna and just the right heat from the serrano chili. It's like a flavor pillow in your mouth. +Crispy Chicken Dumpling ($18) - 9.2/10 Light, airy, but packed with flavor. Comes with a miso mustard and togarashi. Dip it in eel sauce or soy sauce and you're set. + Hamachi Ponzu ($27) - 10/10 Thinly sliced, delicate, with a white ponzu that's citrusy and fresh. Always a go-to for me, and Makoto's version is chef's kiss. + Truffle Salmon ($25) - 9/10 A raw dish served with crystallized soy and citrus. Light, fragrant, flavorful. So worth it. What We Had Mains ____________________ + Frosty Wagyu Fried Rice ($29) - 12/10 This is the one. Jidori egg + XO sauce + melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu. You take one bite and just pause like, wait...what this shit is real? It's rich, savory, and so layered. You NEED to get this ASAP +Rainbow Roll ($24) - 8.5/10 Made with snow crab, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, ono, cucumber, avocado. Fresh, bright, clean. Not the most exciting, but just a solid sushi roll done right. + Miso Seabass ($49) - 9.6/10 Delicate and delicious. It melts in your mouth, served with crispy kale and ume miso. Just beautiful. Silky and buttery, with an elegant flavor profile. +Ginger Lamb Chop ($54) - 10/10 Cooked perfectly, seasoned to perfection. Very tender! Comes with whipped tofu feta sounds strange, but works so well. A must-order. What We Had Dessert _____________________ +Toben Yaki ($17) - 9.2/10 Passion fruit + white chocolate + almond cookie crumble + mango sorbet = YES. So well-balanced and satisfying. Next time? I'm definitely getting the Okinawan Tres Leches it comes with roasted pineapple, Japanese whiskey, spiked meringue, and soy ice cream. The waiter raved about it and now I'm mad I didn't order it! Service: 10/10 Our server was everything. Super knowledgeable, honest, and truly cared about our experience. He told us what to skip and what to run to, and I love that. Parking Tip: It's hectic. Bal Harbour Shops has limited parking, so unless you come early and stalk a spot, you'll likely be valet parking like everyone else. It's cramped, so just plan ahead. Very chic and upscale place located at Bal Harbor. It is a very busy place and very loud so it is very hard to have any kind of conversation, except to yell across the table, especially if you have a larger part, so thats a real downside. However, the food and service is great, we had one dish that we were not crazy with and the server took it back and off the bill. Otherwise, a great evening with good food. Definately worth a visit to try out.
We came here for a Spice lunch and it was AMAZING! First, the interior is fantastic! It's like an upscale, '70's garden party! The upholstery, the lighting, the rattan... it's all there and all done very tastefully! The Spice offerings are varied and interesting. We started with the tuna crispy rice and the tempura shishito peppers. The tuna was incredibly fresh and the rice was perfectly crisped. The peppers were a giant bowl of lightly fried shishitos covered with savory bonito flakes. We both had the sushi / Maki Moraiwase - three pieces of nigiri that were so fresh, they were practically swimming! It also came with four pieces of california maki, filled with what tasted like real crab. Finally, the desserts... exquisite! the Hojicha parfait came with a scoop of raspberry gelato that was tart and refreshing. The Okinawan tres leches was incredible! The scoop of soy ice cream on the side was a real taste treat! There were some negatives... the interior is ice cold and the acoustics are terrible. I don't know why so many restaurants invest so much in interior design only for the room to be a loud echo chamber. Lastly, I find the over the top displays of wealth from both the stores and the patrons at Bal Harbour shops to be grotesque and depressing, but that's not Makoto's fault.

This is an over the top restaurant. The location makes it very exclusive and the prices make it even more difficult. The presentation is high - but overall the experience given the value was just average. Now, I am a single review and this place was rocking when we went. So I am not going to change anyone's opinion. The atmosphere was very fake, with many retired wealthy dinning there or impressing each other, which is what happened with us. Quality - 5 Quantity - 4 Presentation - 4 Atmosphere - 5 - like the decor Service - 4 (3 errors in our order) Parking - 2 Alcohol - Had the house cold Sake - 3 - very average Value - 2 Overall, a restaurant you go to once. If it fits your style - that is money is not an issue. It was not a value/experience worth the price, the food was good, but just greatly over priced. The sushi platter we had was $80 and should have been more like $40.

Makoto absolutely understood the assignment. I ordered the branzino and THANK GOD it wasn't wet. Yes, fish comes from water, but it should not arrive swimming. Perfectly grilled, flaky, and that chimichurri with a thick squeeze of fresh lemon? INSANE. The grilled avocado with soy sauce in the middle was another 10/10. Three avocado halves is technically enough to share, but I ate everything myself because protein and healthy fats matter. Super chic, perfect for lunch, and the service was BEAUTIFUL. Attentive without hovering and somehow they knew what you needed before you asked. And you can shop after? Dangerous. I'll be back every other day. Just kidding. Kind of. read more

This place has become a staple when we come to FL. Inside bar seating for this visit since we didn't make reservations and the outside bar was packed but service was just as good. We only stopped for drinks this time so no food for us but it was just as nice to sit at the bar and visit. Recommend requesting a lemon lavender mojito, the bartender did a great job mixing it. Noise level is ideal for conversations which is hard to say about some dining places. read more

Makoto is a must visit while in Bal Harbor. Such an elegant ambiance - you think you are a resort town somewhere in France. Overall, very cute restaurant. Colors pop and is very big. Food quality is good overall. Fish is very fresh. Service is very very attentive. Recommend making recommendations on weekend or holidays, this place gets very busy. I knock down one Star because the rolls... don't get me wrong, fish is still very fresh and good. It was the rice. Rice was really not there. Sushi rolls are usually make it or not make it by the rice quality. I wondered if they even used sushi quality rice or they just had a day where the rice came out hard. We ordered Miso soup 8.5/10. Huge individual size. I couldn't finish mine. Tasted fine. Not amazing, but pretty decent. No complaint Scallop crudo 9/10 fresh scallops! Unique tasting Melon Breeze- melon taste was dominant and then it watered down very quickly within a couple minutes. Wouldn't order this again. 4/10 Toro sushi - amazing quality fish! Absolutely phenomenal meal from start to finish! Service was great I ordered a Coke Zero and as soon as she opened the can she heard how flat it sounded and took it and brought me a new one right away. We ordered the crispy tuna rice, dynamite shrimp, truffle salmon roll, and beef noodles and every single dish delivered. The crispy tuna rice was perfectly crunchy on the outside with melt-in-your-mouth tuna on top, balanced beautifully with just the right amount of sauce. Easily one of the best bites of the night. The dynamite shrimp were addictive crispy, juicy, and coated in a creamy, spicy-sweet sauce that had just enough kick without overpowering the shrimp. A little hesitant at first being almost $30 but it was worth it! The truffle salmon roll was rich and buttery. The truffle flavor was subtle but elevated the salmon perfectly without being too heavy. Super fresh and beautifully presented. And the beef noodles were comforting and packed with flavor. The noodles were perfectly chewy, the beef was tender, and the sauce tied everything together with a deep, savory richness. On top of the amazing food, the presentation was gorgeous and the atmosphere was warm and stylish perfect for a date night or dinner with friends. Is always the Makoto salad with miso dressing as a great way to start! So glad I could drink it! Then have the Hamachi with sauce and salmon avocado roll. Delicious and fresh. A meal with the beef noodles and that was just spectacular.! The service was 10 out of 10 as well as the ambience and food . It's a bonus that you get to walk it off around the beautiful mall and go shopping afterwards. Our waitress was very professional and super fast, in a good way. Such an interesting spot since it is in a strip mall but the shops there are designer stores and upscale. Second time here and first time since they relocated locations within the Bal Harbor Shops. The new location is bright and has very cute decor. We made reservations and were seated promptly upon arrival. Here's what we had: Dynamite Hand Rolls - small dish, but a 5/5. Delicious! Would definitely order again. Tuna Crispy Rice - Amazing! 5/5. One of the best Crispy Rice dishes I've ever had. Cauliflower- My friend said it was delicious. I'm not a fan of cauliflower, but it was good. House salad - Surprisingly the stand out dish of the day. 5/5. Simple salad, but delicious. King Crab- 3/5 very disappointed with this dish. One of my friends raved about this, but it missed the mark. At $65 it should have been perfect. The butter sauce was delicious, but the crab needed more sauce- several areas were dry and a section was overcooked. Would not order again. Wagyu with the Hot Stone - I've ordered this before and it was amazing. Something was off yesterday. Perhaps the sauce used to dip the beef was changed. It was ok, but could have skipped. Wagyu Fried Rice - 3/5 Nothing special --would skip. Makoto is still a fabulous restaurant and would definitely go again. read more

Drinks: hitsuji (basically lychee martini), nezumi (basically old fashion) Starter: dynamite hand roll, tuna crispy rice, and waygu short rib skewer Nigiri: oh-toro, sake, hamachi, hamachi-toro, unagi, ono, tako (not a huge octopus fan so won't be ordering this again) Service was attentive and pretty fast granted we came here on a Thursday night with a reservation. This was my 1st stop for my Miami spice tour with my husband and I would like to say services was 100/10. I love how my waitress Elias came to confirm any food allergies. The sushi platter i recommend I love the variety they offer(it's not part of Miami spice but I just wanted it) l. The house salad I can say was so delicious I could have just ate 14 of them alone. Spicy edamame was delicious just finish them at the table don't take them to go like me. I came to Makoto at the beginning of January and was really excited because it's so hyped up, but honestly I left feeling pretty underwhelmed. I think this place is overrated for what you're paying. We started with waters and sake, which was $40, then ordered a few appetizers. The tuna crispy rice (which everyone talks about) was actually really good the rice was evenly fried and perfectly crispy, and the tuna on top was solid. We also got the chicken skewers, which had a nice grilled flavor and were enjoyable. Where things started to go downhill was the sushi and sashimi platter. It was $80 and absolutely not worth it. The fish just wasn't great. The salmon and tuna sashimi were okay at best, but definitely mediocre compared to other places I've been. I've had much fresher, better-quality sashimi elsewhere, especially for that price, so this was really disappointing. I honestly didn't even want to finish it, which says a lot given how much it cost. The chicken dumplings were really good with great flavor, and the short rib noodles were delicious. the short rib was tender and flavorful, and the noodles were well done. The meat dishes were definitely the highlight of the meal. If you come here, I'd recommend skipping most of the fish (except the crispy tuna) and sticking to the meat dishes. Our bill ended up being over $400, which felt very overpriced considering how disappointing the sashimi was. For a place with this reputation, I expected much better quality, especially when it comes to the fish. The service was fast and good but it did not feel personal. The ambiance was nice and moody. Makoto definitely lived up to the hype. I've been wanting to try it forever, and I'm so glad I did. We had the wagyu fried rice, wagyu yaki noodles, crispy tuna rice, rainbow rolls, and a bunch of cocktails to celebrate a birthday! What a fun ambiance and everything was so delicious. We were part of a large party, and our server made sure everything was brought out quickly and paid excellent attention to us. I can't wait to come back and try everything. Komodo absolutely delivered. We ordered the fried rice, crab salad, two chickens, hibachi, spicy tuna crispy rice, and almost half of the appetizers and everything was phenomenal. We also went heavy on the sashimi and desserts and every dish was flawless in both flavor and presentation. Makoto never disappoints. Their spicy tuna crispy rice here is one of the best in Miami. The service was excellent and our server was very attentive. I ate lunch here with a friend who is vegetarian, and she had no trouble in finding something to eat. We also got the Okinawan Tres Leches for dessert and the flavor was so yummy and unique. read more
