We visited this restaurant on the evening before our vacation ended. It was a cute, little restaurant. Initially, I was concerned that it took awhile to be acknowledged for seating. The restaurant was busy and the seating appeared to be filled to capacity just from a cursory glance of the restaurant. Finally, we noticed two empty seats at the bar, which were the only available seats. Since we were not acknowledged, we eventually asked if we could take a seat at the bar. The waitress then assisted us. She seated us at the bar and then brought over some menus. She took our beverage order and returned pretty quickly with our water. By that time, we already knew what we wanted to order. I ordered the California roll, miso soup and spring roll. We also had shrimp tempura and shrimp fried rice. The California roll, miso soup, and spring roll were pretty typical taste wise, but the shrimp tempura roll had a different element than any that I have tasted and I have ordered it from a number of restaurants. I got the impression that this is a restaurant that caters to locals because I think our presence was not normal. The service was good, but I still felt a little uneasy in the area. I definitely think I should stick to what I am used to and stay in the South Beach area next time. The overall area was just a little unwelcoming. With a deep passion for tuna tartare and riceless rolls, I went on Yelp while visiting the ball harbor area and this restaurant popped up. It is located at the corner of Surfside with street parking available. It was late already and it only had about two or three tables with guests. The staff is very friendly but the place could use some remodeling or re-decoration, might be helpful to the eye. We tried the tuna tartare and the K roll accompanied by a house salad, And I remember that there are still good restaurants with good prices and comparison to others were of been in the past few weeks; here a house salad goes for $2.75. Retract! Retract! I had two experiences with the Republic that ended the honeymoon! Came here about 2 weeks ago on a Thursday night around 9pm. The restaurant was half full. We were seated and given time to peruse the menu. Lots and lots of time! Someone came by the table to ask if we wanted to move to a larger table, but did not take our order. We flagged down the manager-type guy, who said he would send over someone to take our order, and still, we waited. Another couple that came in at the same time as we did ordered and received their food, and there we were.....waiting for someone to take our order! I was so hungry that by the time the food arrived, I really couldn't say if it was worth the wait - it was just inhaled. We ordered delivery from here last night and it was an epic fail. The food took over an hour to arrive, the "free" delivery was not free and the food was totally sub-par, once it finally arrived. We ordered out a combo dinner for 4 plus several rolls. It came out to $191 on the bill (not including tip) for a meal for 8, and there was plenty for everyone. They packed the whole to-go order really efficiently, including putting the miso soup in styrofoam coffee cups, wrapped up in saran wrap, and placed into cup holders. Overall the quality of the fish seemed great; the salmon soft and fresh. The shrimp nigiri wasn't as great. The rolls didn't stand out too much, but the cucumber rolls were one of the less popular ones. The rainbow roll seemed a little skimpy on the ingredients. The spider roll wasn't as crunchy as I'd like, but this was after we walked a few blocks with the food and it'd been sitting out on our hotel patio through dinner. The tempura was good as well. Sushi Republic is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Miami. I highly recommend this place for any sushi lovers! Fresh food with fast and friendly service. I love bringing my friends to try it out. On Mondays-Thursdays they offer bento boxes during lunch time (12 pm - 3 pm if I'm not mistaken). They come with Miso Soup, a House Salad, California Roll and two other options. I usually pick the Chicken Teriyaki and Salmon Roll. At $11 it's so filling and delicious - it's a steal! My favorite rolls are the Caribbean, Three Seas, and Boston rolls. I've also ordered takeout for dinner on several occasions (I recommend ordering from their dinner combo menu) and the most I've had to wait was around 15 minutes. Yesterday my friend took me there for lunch on our lunch break... To be honest, to be honest I really just wanted my usual tuna sub from subway across the street but I wanted my friend to be happy.. Long story short.. I ordered the same thing as my friend but added shrimp to mine. When my order came, the fork and knife was already in the plate but it was used and had lipstick on it. I only caught it after the fact. I was very tired and like I said I wanted my friend to be happy for doing something nice for me. But usually I would have sent the food back if I was in my right mind. We kept trying to tell the staff but nobody cared. They just replaced the fork and walked off. Then when my friend mentioned it at the end someone else gave me a $10 gift card for the restaurant. Really? First of all I'm not eating eating there again. Secondly, what am I going to do with a $10 gift card for a restaurant when I get sick from eating off of a dirty fork. That's just wrong, the entire thing was just wrong. And nobody cared. Miami has awful expensive sushi places. But I finally found great sushi here. Good prices (considering the location). Place is small so you might wait at least half an hour, 45 minutes for a table. They look understaffed and take forever to take your order. And our server forgot to put in our entire order. We had to call her and ask about it. Ended up canceling the rest of it(we were pretty full also). Wish they would move to a bigger location with better parking. If you sit outside don't forget people are allowed to (and will) smoke. By the way when will Florida grow up and forbid people from smoking where others are eating? I give 5 stars for the food, 2 for service and 0 for parking and smokers. read more

Sushi Republic features some of the more unique rolls I've seen at a small town Sushi restaurant. With super friendly service, and nice fresh fish in their rolls, they do their best to stand out at the end of the Harding Avenue strip. Looking for a meal out Friday, I went to Harding with my wife and sister-in-law. It wasn't until we reached the strip that we remembered it was Sabbath, so most of the businesses were closed by sundown. We decided to walk down a bit further, and almost went over to the Bal Harbour Shops, when we discovered Sushi Republic was still open for business. Upon entering we were greeted by a nice gentleman, who directed us to the hostess to be seated. The hostess promptly found us an available booth, and provided us with the menus to peruse. Several minutes after being seated, our waitress came over to take the drink order, and gave us a little longer to look over the menu. When she came back, we placed an order of the Pork Gyoza and Age Tofu to start, as well as our rolls. My sister-in-law ordered a Veggie Roll, my wife, the Hibiscus Roll, and I ordered a Yellow Submarine for myself. The gyoza was served as an order of 4 for around $5, and upon ordering, the waitress inquired how we would like it prepared (pan fried, deep fried, or steamed). We went with the deep fried, and the outside was nice and crispy with not too much oil, and the inside filling was very flavorful. The age tofu came served in a nice broth, and was soft and wet inside. The veggie roll was standard nothing special, but was well rolled, and the vegetables inside were nice and crisp. The hibiscus roll was great, and the tuna inside tasted very fresh. The Yellow Submarine was very unique, but was kind of difficult to eat due to its larger size. Although I loved the krab, cream cheese, and egg crepe, I did not particularly care for the iceberg lettuce mixed with the roll. Service was friendly, and never felt the least bit rushed. An 18% gratuity was included on the check which felt a bit odd due to the small party size, but I imagine it helps the restaurant ensure fair pay for the staff. As there are a lot of other restaurants in the area I still have not gotten to try, I do not see myself returning to Sushi Republic in the future, but I did enjoy the meal I had. read more

I've been coming to Bal Harbour over winter break and new years for the past 10 years. During each stay, I must go to Sushi Republic at least 3-4 times. During the year I dream about getting my favorite rolls and all the awesome delicious dishes that they have. They have a great menu with a lot of variety, complete with pictures for people new to Japanese cuisine. The sushi chefs are very friendly, and even though we come in 1 week a year, they always remember us. They watched me grow up (granted 1 week a year) for 10 years, and they are really awesome. The tuna avocado salad is a great starter, along with the boo boo tuna. Everything is priced well and very fair, and the portions are good too. I always order a good amount of rolls, and you can never go wrong with a few oyster shooters. They always have good specials. I especially love the whole deep fried flounder or snapper when they have it. For dessert YOU MUST get the ice cream tempura. Of all the ice cream tempura that I have had, this is the best. In conclusion, Sushi Republic has a good atmosphere and everyone is very friendly. The food is great, and if you get a seat at the sushi bar, the sushi chefs are super friendly too.
