Had sushi with my son, daughter in law, and grandson at Hiro's Sushi Bar in flagstaff Arizona. It's their favorite sushi place. Pretty good for a land locked state. Fish was fresh and quite a good selection of special rolls offered on the menu. They even had a child's plate for my grand baby. Chicken and rice kept him happy. Service was fair, they weren't full, but apparently there was a large party that was keeping our server and the sushi chefs busy. Typical sushi or Japanese restaurant motif, efficient but somewhat spartan. I like the sushi bar with glass so that you can see the fish and watch the chefs prepare your order if you're so inclined. I'll be back the next time I'm in flagstaff. read more

Our family went for lunch. I ordered sashimi. The fish tasted old, and the service was more than subpar. First, our server took 10 minutes before he came to our table. Then, he hardly said two words to us when we first arrived. The only thing he said to us was, "straw? " We were absolutely disappointed and will not be returning. Also, one table had a stack of takeout boxes on it. Not a good look. I recommend going to Karma where the sushi is fresh, and customer service is fantastic. The only reason that they didn't get 1 star is because the servers were at least reasonably pleasant. The service was bizarre. Visited Flagstaff and had dinner to-go at this place but I made sure to call ahead since I had a feeling they were going to be busy. I was right! Even when I called my order in, it took 45-50 mins for it to be ready. I would normally be pissed about the wait time but the food was so good that I actually didn't mind. No wonder they're busy! I don't ever leave a bad review as I don't like to give negativity to others....but it's probably because I don't care about the place as I know I will never go back. Well, as a Japanese who grew up in Tokyo, I do care that this place has a name of a Japanese person and this restaurant is trying to represent our country....so in hopes of them making a huge difference to be better, I will be dead honest about this place. The atmosphere is good and the service was great. Everyone is friendly and there's no complaints there. But the food was not good at all. I was raised never to leave anything on your plate so I always finish everything on my plate but i couldn't. I ordered chicken katsu don as I was super hungry and thinking you could not go wrong with Oyakodon(that's what we call the food in Japan) but I was sadly disappointed. The non sticky rice was swimming in the soup of sauce which was extremely salty. It's very obvious that they have not had a real Oyakodon before. You can get Oyakodon 10 times better with less than $3 in Japan...even at Seven Eleven. I know this isn't Japan but there's no special ingredient that is hard to get for that food so I expected it to be much better when it's priced $17. My daughter ordered yakisoba which had nothing in it other than noodles and it was not with authentic spices. They said they used Japanese sauce but it was something else. Well, it was eatable for my daughter and the waiter tried to meet our request and they seem to have tired their best so I didn't say anything. My husband ordered unagi don as it's my daughter's favorite food and my husband was not that hungry so he was going to share that with her but she took one bite and never wanted to eat any more. We didn't order any sushi so I can't say anything about it but the quality of the rice was terrible so I don't know if you can make good sushi rice with that. I highly doubt that the owner is Japanese. If he is, then he should be ashamed of himself for serving the food tastes like that as Japanese food. They are not Japanese food. I'm sorry I didn't say anything there as when the waiter came asking how everything was, I was on the business call and my American husband said everything was great I told him I wasn't going to say everything was good...and I was actually going to suggest how to cook those dishes right but it was too late. I was going to leave this alone and forget about it but I can't stand the thought of someone who's never had any Japanese food going there for the first time and thinking that is what the Japanese food is all about. I do care that much so please have someone (even a local Japanese house wife who can cook) show you how it should be done. Or better yet, make a trip to Japan one day and actually eat the food there so you know that's not Japanese food you are serving. I hope ownership sees this post and addresses the issues. I have been going to Hiro's for 20+ years, and hated seeing what I saw yesterday. The lunch waiter needs training. Talks too low, mumbles, and not friendly. The California Rolls were pre-made, which seemed like something I would get from Safeway. Where to begin, walk through the door, and the host/waiter just abrupt and not remotely friendly. Walks us to a table drops the menus walks away. Ok, here we go, let the games begin. So we said let just see how this is, high hopes inbound. Appetizer of takoyaki, might as well call them bbq sauce balls, heavy is the hand on this one. Couldn't taste anything but the drenched coating off their bbq sauce. So that's a bust. I tried their nigri combo, ok before you judge saying well it is fish. I've had sushi everywhere around. I've been to Japan, fresh fish isn't fishy tasting or smelling. You know what is? Not fresh fish, every piece of the nigri was fishy tasting and smelling, the only one that wasn't was the seared Tuna. I wonder why, because it got seared. We tried the Las vegas roll just to see, and that thing was so bland I dipped it in the leftover bbq sauce from the takoyaki just to finish a piece or 2. Amongst all this was our same waiter, who just drops your food, never refilled any drinks. He literally drops the bill on the corner and walks away. I honestly will say this is worse than grocery store sushi. That's saying something, there wasn't any aspect of this meal that was good. The "Japanese" salad was ice berg lettuce with some sort of dressing. The miso was decent, though, so I guess if you want miso soup, here ya go. Honestly, just go somewhere else. This sushi place is above excellent I would give it more stars and possible the ambience the food everything was perfect the wait staff was on top of everything from The second you walk in we ordered the Bento platter machine it was excellent the sushi was perfect tight and delicious the shrimp tempura was outstanding the place was genuinely clean and classy this is definitely an upscale place Without acting like it is a clientele wizard of all walks of life and it works they have a sushi bar right there where you can actually sit at the counter and watch them make it the soup was excellent the sashimi was excellent the whole experience was perfect read more

Difficult review. The food selection and portions are great. Nice big cuts of fish for sashimi and really nice roll interpretations. Unfortunately the fish quality is not there. The fish is served on a warm/room temperature plate, so unless you eat it quickly it spoils at room temp. Some of the more unique plate (salmon roe, and BBQ eel) really don't taste right. Somewhat metallic and/ or preserved. The ginger is jus slopped on a plate. There is little are or attention to detail. Finally the services is almost a disinterested approach. There is a lack of care in the service which may be what translate into a lack of care in the quality of the food. The Japanese care about detail....this place does not. We arrived in town late after a long drive and didn't feel like eating out, so we decided to order takeout to take back to the hotel. My husband was in the mood for sushi so this was what we found on yelp that was still open. The quality and freshness of the fish/sushi was definitely not as great as we had hoped. For the price we paid, it was not worth it. It's comparable to sushi in a mall food court. I didn't end up finishing the sushi. Pleasant and authentic Japanese food experience that was heartwarming for out of towner's like us that are used to having great Japanese food at home. As always, I had vegetable tempura and I'm happy to report it was delightful! Not too oily and the dipping sauce was excellent. Hubby had beef teriyaki and his was perfectly cooked and sauce again was spot on. The limited hours (closed at 8:30) and the turned up seating on many of the tables emphasized the lack of a crowd there and made me think they couldn't wait to close up and get out of there for the night. Too bad because the food was better than decent and the service was friendly and prompt. * In addition they have a cute little gift and candy store with Asian treats and goodies. This is a gem of a place. I want to tell the owners NOT to throw in the towel. Keep all the chairs on the floor until you've actually closed for the night. Not what we expected for the amount money spent. We were greeted immediately but reservations was never needed even though it was told we needed. The ambiance is lacking that sushi bar feel, it was dark and dirty. Looked like it was a teriyaki restaurant more than a sushi bar restaurant. Jonathan was our server he was very nice. No Sapporo on draft, no soy sauce plates provided before food was dropped. Presentation was hideous for $30 plate sashimi, FB pictures didn't look nothing like that. Our server had his fingers touched on our plates and soy cup while dropping them off to the table and Jonathan forgot to mention about the upcharge $1 for the substitute sashimi since we didn't like the mackerel it was horrible ( that is not a sashimi) it was so disgusting I couldn't eat more. I like Hiro's, they have a plethora of really creative rolls that you won't see anywhere else in town except when they are copied and name the same at Karma. Their salmon and tuna are very fresh. I have been to Hiro's for 15 years now, never once got sick. Service is quick but not too quick, decor is just fine, music varies from American pop song redone by Japanese artists to Smooth California Jazz a la Kenny G. Restroom are very clean. Some of my favorite rolls include the Firecraker, New York, Super Spider, Ocean and Volcano. They also have noodle soups and teriyaki for people who are not into raw fish. One tiny negative is the burnt soy smell that will follow you home. Hiro's is hands down the best sushi place in Flagstaff. Enjoy some "Schweet" sushi! read more

I would give 0 stars but it won't allow the option. I'm from California and was visiting some friends who live in Flagstaff for a birthday. We ordered a bottle of Sake for the table and upon being prompted for IDs, was told that an Arizona license would be required for ordering alcohol. We had never heard this rule before and upon asking for clarification received an unprofessional answer as well as that an Arizona license would be needed to order alcohol from our waiter. This shifted the entire mood of the night from a celebration to confusion. In addition, the service was poor following this confusion and our waiter rarely checked up on us. read more
