Not sure how this place isn't a whopping five stars. Staff, environment and food were all outstanding Brian was our bartender and server. He engaged every customer and made you feel like friend or family. Great conversationalist as well. I ordered the smash burger w bacon and the wife got the Maryland crab cake sandwich Being she's a Maryland native she's a snob when it comes to Maryland crab. This place knocked it out of the park for food with great taste. We also got to speak with other staff members who were equally sweet and fun to chat with. Definitely coming back!! Technically, I'd say 1.5 stars but it got the extra half since that wasn't an option bc of the shrimp salad. When on vacation there are only so many dives out and this just didn't hit it on any level, unfortunately... The vibe you think you're gonna get and the actuality of it all are two different things. Maybe some of the wait staff was off but really not sure. The cocktails were decent. The "rail' well like drinks were a nice selection. They weren't heavily handed, however, the selection was nice. But the food just didn't hit it. The crabcakes (which I didn't try) are what they pride themselves on but-- from my understanding from the other person in my party--wasn't great and the filker took away from the yumminess that could have been. The Maryland crab soup was decent.... kinda like a veggie stew with crab meat on top. The grilled cheese was modified for GF as a bun and, as requested it, was turned inside out so it was better than nothing but there was no flair whatsoever (it was literally toasted bread and an almost melted piece of Kraft). The "smoked wings" were nothing resembling being close to a fire save for the fryer they were popped into. The bacon jam was interesting, possibly the best part of the meal, had it not been for the stellar shrimp salad. Seriously, it was very good! But it was a small scoop stop a giant bowl of mixed greens. This accompanied an overly thymed dark meat chicken salad and was termed the "Beach & Barn Platter." Great service and great menu. Will def be back! The only thing I'd say that could be improved was there wasn't a big enough serving of pot roast. As far as I am concerned, Hippee Hen House seems to have gone down hill. Our bartender was excellent, but the food wasn't very good. He had the French onion brisket dip. He said it wasn't very good. I ordered the baby back rib platter. I'm not sure what they feel are baby back ribs, but these were not it. On one hand, the cole slaw was very good. Would I come back here? Hippie Hen House has been on my to try list for their Crab Cakes and I finally had the opportunity to stop by on a Monday for their Crab Cake Day. We were seated promptly and greeted by our friendly server Lisa. We ordered crab cake platters and ordered a Take Home Couples Meal to go for Half off. The crab cakes were the best we have had so far in the area. The accompanying mash potatoes and Cole slaw were fresh and tasty. I would have preferred the option for a baked potato, but the mash potatoes hit the spot. They have plenty of parking in a private lot and our Server Lisa was fantastic! We look forward to return visits. Updated: Really enjoyed the take home meal of meat loaf and on a return visit, the Smash burger and bowl of Crisfield Cream of Crab & Corn Chowder was outstanding. This is our third time here. Last 2 times we had the crab cake sandwich. We have tried many places that say their crab cake is all crab and it is not true. Have been very disappointed until now. Delicious, all crab no filler! It is true no filler in the crab cake. This visit we got the crab platter no bun. It is a good size crab cake with fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw is very good. Definitely will be back . Want to try other things on the menu but that dam crab cake calls my name. Our waitress was Julie she was very friendly and pleasant. She is a keeper. See you soon. Sweet and tangy... i would have liked a little bit more of a crunchiness ! Next I went crazy and ordered something completely new to me...Bog Balls. If you've never heard of these (I had not) it's a chicken, rice, concoction that is formed into a ball and deep fried! Topped with a Kielbasa sausage gravy. We felt welcome as soon as we walked in. One of the owners was hostessing and was warm and friendly. The place is comfy, and it's obvious it's a former Applebee's with some Maryland touches. The menu is large and has something for everyone. I had a hard time deciding what to get, and finally settled on the surf and turf burger, which had crab dip, cheese, and tomato. The bun was freshly made by a local bakery and was perfect. My burgers were smash burgers and were juicy and seasoned well. I felt the crab dip was a bit lost and could've used a bit more to be able to taste it. The fries were good-I like mine a tad more done and these are the kind best enjoyed with vinegar. My friend had the kielbasa sub and it was at least a foot long! It had onions and peppers and she stated it was delicious and that the roll was amazing. Our server was attentive and friendly. I came here with my parents while visiting them for the weekend and was very impressed with the service. Our waitress named Mindy was wonderful, she has good recommendations, was friendly and she was efficient. I had the crab grilled cheese and it was amazing! My mom got the vegetable pot pie and didn't like it and the owner and waitress were very accommodating and were fast at getting her something else. My dad got the unlimited soup and salad and enjoyed it. This place is very affordable, clean and the staff was so friendly. I have been wanting to go here for a while and finally made it. I don't see the hippie vibe at all but it was a nice bar restaurant and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the salmon BLT and it was amazing. My waitress was very very nice and very accommodating. I would definitely go back there again and try something else on their menu. I was pleased to be able to make a reservation for 10 and we were actually seated a few minutes early. Everything went down hill from there.... We had Terrible service and an impatient waiter. We waited over an hour for the first of our food to arrive. Then several orders were wrong! Our niece specifically said she was a vegetarian when ordering the pot pie. And yet she was given SHRIMP in her pot pie. Most of our sides were wrong. We had to ask for drink refills several times. The extensive menu was so exciting and yet most of the food was small portions and bland. We will not be back nor will we recommend this place. read more

Hippie Hen House has really good food, friendly service and a casual atmosphere. The bar is in the center of the restaurant, and there are plenty of tables in different sections around the outside. They can easily handle large groups. We started with a couple of appetizers - crab nachos (8/10) and chicken bog balls (similar to boudin balls from New Orleans) (8/10). Both were really good with good flavor. For the meal we had three different dishes. - Carolina Charcuterie (essentially a low country boil) was good - much more food than it looks like, lots of shrimp that were cooked perfectly, spicy sausage, but it needed a little more flavor (8/10). - The Pollo Caprese - crispy chicken with tomato, fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and a light drizzle of balsamic reduction loaded on Benjamin Bakery's thick cut focaccia bread slices. May be one of the best chicken sandwiches I've eaten. The chicken was cooked perfectly (10/10). - Southern shrimp and jumbo lump scampi - really good flavor I highly recommend the Hippie Hen House. Let me start by saying, this is the last review I have to write for our trip to Myrtle Beach, and my most conflicted. Adorable location, clean inside, and AMAZING crab cakes. From there, I struggle. Seated promptly for our lunch in the bar area (not because we requested it; we weren't drinking). Light crowd, as best we could tell. Took quite some time for Michael to get our unsweet tea orders and deliver teas. He jetted off before I could ask for sweetener. When I was able to get his attention, I asked for Sweet & Low, and he brought me Stevia. Looking at the other sweetener caddies, the choices are apparently Stevia or sugar. I did without. Finally had our meal order taken, and it took so long to appear, we were considering asking for crackers. Split a crab cake app (1 crab cake) and a roasted brussels sprouts salad. Crab cake was divine, but at $20 a cake, if I lived in the area, I would only get them on Monday when they are the special. Salad was just okay. HUGE bowl of greens, and brussels sprouts were nicely al dente, but almost flavorless. Not the roasted we expected. Took another minute to get our check. Hostess did come around once during our seating, I'm guessing to make sure no one was ready to walk out on the server. All-in-all, it took us and hour and 15 min to dine here. We had a $5 coupon from the local paper, yet were told we were given a $5 discount for our time. $10 discount? Nope, $5. At any rate, don't go in a rush, and try to do it on a Monday. read more

I have been there twice now, both times my crab cakes were so wet inside. Just the other day, the one I ordered tasted fishy. There was no lump meat whatsoever this past Saturday, in mine or the other 2 that were ordered at our table. The boardwalk fries were really good the 1st time, the 2nd, they were dry. In spite of the name, it still looks likes an old Applebees inside which was a bit surprising. However, the menu and food was nothing like Applebees at all !! Stopped in late on a Friday night and was very pleased with service and food. Someone had a wedding in the restaurant and this stressed the staff some but they went above and beyond to help the other customers. Kristen waited on us and made several honest recommendations for food. Another dissatisfied customer had just left upsetting the staff and surrounding customers but Kristen shook it off because they were truly unreasonable and continued with everyone's support.
