    Coconut Shrimp

We were traveling through Murrells Inlet and based on the reviews, stopped at The Fish Shak for lunch. We were so glad we made the detour. First off, the owner was very personable and accommodating. She made us feel welcome. We got the grouper sliders, the coconut shrimp entree special, and a side of hush puppies. The two entrees came with house made fries/chips hybrid with a creamy dill dipping sauce. The dipping sauce was surprisingly light for something cream based and paired well with the chips and seafood. Everything was fried perfectly and the coconut shrimp were so good, we were surprised that it wasn't a regular item. The hush puppies were some of the best we had. We would definitely recommend The Fish Shak if you are in the area.

Sometimes the best food is found at a place where few ventures to look. "Next time you're in Murrells Inlet," said my wife, "make sure you hit The Fish Shak." "Where's that?" I asked. "Right down the road from Suck Bang Blow and across the street from the Beaver Bar." That pretty much sums up why I like Murrells Inlet and love my wife. Few of us get this kind of nod from our spouse. And, now you know where to find some of the best fried seafood off the Grand Strand. The Fish Shak is a bright yellow food cart with picnic tables for carry out only. On our recent trip we ordered the Thai Fried Shrimp which sat upon a pile of freshly sliced, then deep fried potatoes. Just dip 'em into the dill ranch sauce provided. Hot, crispy, and damn delicious. The shrimp is nearly naked with just a hint of breading which I prefer. Tender, juicy, and shrimpy like Bubba Gump caught 'em this morning. The sweet Thai chili sauce set the whole thing in motion. Perfect. Give yourself a treat and hit The Fish Shak on your next outing to Murrells Inlet. Blowing all the whistles on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Go here. You know where it is.

A favorite local spot!!! Holy yum of all yums!!!! Let me tell you!!! I would eat here everyday for the rest of my life if my body fat percentage would allow fried foods to be a staple meal. The frying is done perfectly EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Lightly fried, really crispy, and never burnt. The oil tastes fresh every time, the fish is flaky, the shrimp stay plump, and the thinly sliced potato chips are both bendy and crispy. The owner will also cook for longer if you want because he's that awesome! The kitchen inside the truck is super clean (immaculate, really) and it's absolutely because the owner cleans the kitchen as he cooks. We've seen him do it many times and every time! If you care to read about location and customer service, keep reading: We stumbled across this epic little yellow food truck on our way into Murrell's inlet while visiting family in MB. Actually, to be honest we drove past it the first time, spent an hour driving along the inlet looking for a "seafood place that didn't have a long wait" since there were only a handful open during this Covid debacle and everybody and their momma's were trying to eat at the same sit-down places, and when we gave up and decided to leave the inlet we tried this happy little food truck. Now we don't drive into the inlet ever because our first and last stop is always this ammazing yellow food truck that sits in the parking lot of the bait shop. We sit at the picnic tables under his Tiki Umbrellas and watch the traffic drive by and this moment is easily one of my favorite parts of our visit. When the owner found out my local-living nephew has an egg allergy and couldn't eat any of the fried seafood because of the batter ingredients he uses, he surprised us the next time we stopped by with a new batter option that omits egg. He keeps it on hand for allergies. Whhhhhhat?! Now our whole family can eat together, allergy-kid included because the owner is beyond thoughtful. 10/10 recommend over and over again.

Even our doxie was happy we stopped in.

Looks like a dive but situated on the water between what appears to be more upscale restaurants. We stopped for lunch a couple weeks ago on the way from Oak Island to Surfside. Had to eat where dogs were allowed since he couldn't stay in the hot car. They only have outdoor and waterfront seating. This was a good choice. Friendly service. They even brought a fresh bowl of water for our doxie. Food was good - but the POUND CAKE (seemed to be grilled in butter) with butter pecan ice cream was TO DIE FOR!!!

Delicious meal! Ordered the XL fish plate not knowing what to expect. It was enough for 2 people. We enjoyed our meal at a picnic table at Huntington Beach State Park. We will definitely return.

Our first and second visit consisted mostly of the same things: Oysters and Calamari to start, Seafood Mac & Cheese and Fish & Chips. I had the lettuce wraps, which are big, so share. And I had Crab Cakes. The wraps were good but they needed a better aioli in my opinion, because it became a sort of watery dressing instead of something sturdier. And the pico de gallo was not actually that. It was diced tomato, onion and had zero taste of lime, salt or spicy. It was fine but could have been killer. My hubby had the Clam Chowder, Pan Seared Grouper and the shrimp Po Boy. He loved the grouper, risotto and the chowder. The fish was flaky and seasoned well. The po boy needed more sauce but was really delicious. My daughter (16) needed a seafood break since she had the fish and chips the first visit and went with the Claw House Burger. She said it was seasoned and that it was indeed 1/4 lb. And Fish & Chips was the best she had had (which, she's had an incredible amount for her young age) -- not too much breading, nice crisp on the outside and juicy fish. The fries both nights were a little chewy but the flavor was there. And how can I forget. Even though on the second night we saw at least five tables start with the Crab Nachos we added a third item, Fried Clam Strips. Those were ridiculously good. I'm not a fan of tartar sauce so I ate it without and it was perfect on its own. Everything was fresh, they paid attention to detail in most individual elements and the location sent it over the top. Definitely worth a visit.

A table of 4 sat a few minutes before we did and a table of 6 sat probably 10 minutes after them. Our table and the table of 6 were served before the group of 4 who had to ask a bus boy for service. Yikes! Server was sweet besides the empty non alcoholic beverage glasses she did not fill when our food came out. She didn't come back to check in on us until my husband's 6 bites of dinner were already gone. I asked if the portion is usually that small (especially in comparison to the significantly cheaper - MASSIVE PORTIONS we saw being served all around us) and she politely said "yes. typically, sometimes a little bigger." As someone with a culinary arts degree & kitchen background I was very very very disappointed on the portion size of his entree for the price & sizes of surrounding entrees being served (that were cheaper or around the same price) and it literally ruined my entire experience. A smidge dramatic but the God's honest truth! Great view, beautiful patio, friendly service - just extremely disappointed. I planned to order both of us dessert and immediately skipped out & asked for the check when the server finally came over to ask how our food was. This review is hot & cold because my experience was. Would I recommend it? I'd recommend going for the best oysters in Myrtle and a clean, friendly facility - but that's about all I can say! PS - $3 "destination fee?" Clearly I'm not from around here, but it was the only restaurant from north Myrtle down to Murrells to charge us a fee for eating there as a tourist.

Shrimp po-boy shrimp was ok, but we had shrimp the past few nights that was much better. My MIL said the chicken pot pie was the best she ever had. We've been to three different places in the past few days and the thing that stood out here the most was the service. Our server was very sweet, but had too many tables. The other places we went to were bringing us refills before we had to ask. Our drinks were empty for a while here, and I know it wasn't that she wasn't paying attention. She had several big tables. We made a reservation for outdoors, but when we got there, they said they don't reserve for indoor or outdoor, which isn't want they said on the phone. We also were there for 1.5 hours with the reservation. I think maybe they were just understaffed. But there were also several empty tables which is unusual at 6:00 in the summer. So overall, it was good, but with so many options, we wouldn't feel compelled to go back.

The Drum was just awful - I should have sent it back but being in a large group I didn't want to hold everyone up. The stuffed Drum was the most expensive thing on the menu. It was tough, dry and WAY overcooked. The top of the Crab cake stuffing was burnt black. I suspect the dish had been cooked a day or two ago and simply reheated. Our waitress was wonderful, fast, efficient and got everyone's order right. She even put the TV on the Atlanta Braves game for us. I would probably try this place again, but I'd just order something fried.

Let's try the good first. We arrived and we're seated immediately, but was also arrived just before 5pm, and it was already packed. Not surprised as it is the peak of the summer season. Our server was pleasant and attentive, and in my opinion, that was pretty much the extent of the " good". The "OK". - the food was just that, ok. The cobia had no real seasoning on it, if it weren't for the butter sauce, it would have had zero flavor. The fries are obviously from frozen and cooked until very crispy, almost hard. The mac and cheese sampled from my wife's plate also tasted like a mass produced, frozen deal. She said the scallops were good, and the shrimp I sampled were decent. My son enjoyed his fish and fries, but he's 6. The "bad"...since I'm using those words. It's loud, and got louder around 5:45. No surprise though, it's called a saloon and the reviews clearly say it's loud. Be prepared. Parking. I guess if you can find a spot on site, you're good, but the pay lots across the street are $20 for 2 hours...the least you can get. And again, something I failed to read, researcher whatever, but the pictures of all the 4 legged friends that have crossed the rainbow bridge that adorn the walls, it was, to me, a bit of a buzz kill. I quite frankly never realized it's concept was to honor actual dead dogs. My bad. We've been, and I honestly don't expect well go back, at least not for a while. I'll give it another shot, but in an area like this, there are always new places to try, ones that have been open for 30 years, and ones that have been open for 30 days. It's important to make a good first impression to generate return business.
