    Tasting flight
    Daniel A.

Stumbled upon this place while camping in Arnold. Loved it! Staff was super friendly and welcoming! I did the tasting flight. They have some excellent products! Especially loved the vodka and gin. (And I am not a fan of vodka usually). It's the most interesting flavorful vodka I've ever tasted. I ended up buying two bottles. Lol. This place is terrific! Highly recommend you pop in for a tasting.

A la carte tastings of any spirit are $3-4 for each. I was kayaking in the area and once I heard that this local distillery existed, I was jonesing to visit their tasting room before the weekend was over. On Sunday afternoon, we managed to break camp and pack up in time to pass through town 30 minutes before they closed. I specifically asked to sample their spirits of the bourbon and rye persuasion. They have tasting flight specials, but I wanted to try all the whiskeys currently in stock. That is: the Calaveras Cask Finish Bourbon, the Trapper's Path 18 yr Canadian Rye finished in local beer stout barrels, and the Single Barrel reserve bourbon. That was the order in which they suggested sampling. I was initially puzzled that the 18 year rye wasn't last in the order. This was cleared up when the pouring staff member explained that they set the order going from lower proofage to higher proofage. (The Single Barrel Reserve bourbon is 110 proof). Their 18 year rye was my favorite. I'm partial to the spiciness of rye whiskey, and this one was pretty tasty. I wanted to get one, but at $127, it was more than I wanted to spring for an impulse purchase. ( I wonder if they'd consider doing 375ml half-bottles?) I bought one of the Calaveras Cask Finish bourbons. It was a little "hot". This is likely due to lack of time aging in a new distillery. The finish is a little rough. A little splash of ginger ale would smooth it out. Or, use another whiskey with a smooth finish and splash it in this. Alas, they'd sold out of their American Single Malt already. Their menu states that they floor malt and kiln dry their grain in Alameda. (Released last winter and sold out by July of the same year!) The tasting room interior is medium-ish in size. One end had their gift shop items ( shirts, whiskey stones, glassware, canned cocktails, etc. The other end of the room has bar space for sitting with your purchased cocktail. There's also a circular space with fur-covered high-backed lounge chairs for a group to enjoy having a chat circle. It was an enJoyable stop for tasting or just to have a cocktail.

Love this place! But what makes it special and brings me back every chance I get ... the people! The entire team makes you feel like you are part of the family sharing knowledge about their spirits, with a welcoming smile and pure joy for what they do. I'm not gonna lie .. the specialty cocktails and tasters are amazing as well! So grateful to have this small slice of happiness here in Arnold!

This place is like a hidden gem. We've been wanting to go here for a tasting for sometime now and finally had the free time this last Saturday. The staff were so nice and explained each one we were tasting. The inside is very nice and relaxed to sit back and have a drink. I was so excited to find that they make their own Kraüterlikör! I lived in Germany and have not been able to find this anywhere. We also enjoyed a very good old fashioned.

Wow, props to this place for an amazing drink menu, service and venue. The owners were SUPER friendly as well as all the staff. There drinks are something else too, love their vodka and their bourbon there. They make an amazing old fashioned and a vodka/jalapeno/cucumber drink that is PERFECT for the summertime. I ended up buying two of those mixes, their vodka, bourbon, a hat and some stickers lol. Only one drink per customer. Just an fyi, it's not a place where you get hammered. But it's worth it.

A must visit if you enjoy locally crafted, outstanding spirits. A family run operation from top to bottom. Welcoming and friendly, the entire family loves what they do and it shows in how they greet every guest and what they create for everyone to enjoy. Their mixed drinks are outstanding and we look forward to every release of their latest bottles. Gin, Vodka, Bourbon, specialty releases like Warming Hut and more, there is something for everyone. Check them out!

Fun little family owned place! Prefect spot to stop for a drink to warm up after visiting the snow! Staff were beyond friendly and welcoming, highly recommend.

Great place to chill and relax. Wonderfully friendly staff. Delicious drinks and cocktails.

Quality craft cocktails in a really cool setting. They will chat you up about what they distill here which shows good management. We will definitely be coming back to see the new menu in a couple weeks. Shame that CA limits you to one drink per day at a distillery as I would've loved to try a couple of the others while waiting for our reservations nearby.

I was in Murphys last weekend for the parade, and we stumbled into this fantastic little gem. As we were welcomed and warmly greeted by Alex, such an enchanting person, we knew it would be a fantastic experience. The place is adorable and cozy, regardless of the over 100 degrees temperature outside. All the drinks looked so yummy it was hard to decide on just one. My husband had the Camp Nine Zinger, and I had the Spicer's Cucumber Jalapeño" Both were delicious. If you make it up to Murphys, please stop and enjoy the tastings.

This is my favorite distillery. We make it a point to come here every time we're up in Arnold. Been here about seven times now. The drinks are great atmosphere is great the owners and the help are amazing. There's absolutely nothing bad I can say about about this place whatsoever so if you're up in Arnold are in the area and you want to place a kick back and just relax and have a drink or buy a couple of bottles of some great products you need to come here! Love you guys!!!

Hinterhaus is awesome! They make great spirits. Their whole lineup absolutely delivers, but we are partial to their whiskey, vodka & gin. Plus they are now making cocktails in their beautiful tasting room and the cocktails are really good. We bought a couple 4-packs of their new pre-mix take home drinks which are also delicious. The owners go out of their way to be friendly, fun, and to let you know how much they value and appreciate your business. The owners friendliness has carried over to their staff as well. The 2 young people working over Labor day weekend were just as fun and friendly. This is a must stop for anyone visiting the area. You will not be disappointed. Can't wait to see what else they add to their lineup. They keep coming up with new products.

The cornbread is great, make sure to order it when you sit down as it takes a few minutes to come out. My husband and I shared the shishito peppers, which were fresh, spicy, and yummy! I then had the pasta dish, which was delicious! The sauce was rich, and I loved the noodles and chunks of steak in it. My husband loved his steak plate and the sides that came with it. Great drinks too! My husband stuck with dirty martinis and red wine. I had a lemon drop (so yummy), a strawberry fields from their menu (also yummy!), and a small mini cocktail of what I believe was a lemon meringue cocktail! Shoutouts to: -Erika (not sure of the spelling; the very sweet owner of this establishment, along with her dad and brother!) -Elly (our friend who works here, and whose husband told me about this wonderful place! She is awesome!) -Indiana (our server! She was super sweet and attentive!) Definitely check this place out whenever you get a chance! Really happy to have something like this in El Dorado Hills, and my husband and I are looking forward to returning soon!

When my buddy and his wife came into town for his birthday, it felt like the perfect excuse to finally make the trip. Spoiler: it did not disappoint. We arrived just after opening at 2pm and were immediately struck by the building -- it's genuinely beautiful, the kind of space that sets the tone before you've even had a drink. We were greeted by Ryan, who was professional, warm, and clearly passionate about what he does. The tour itself was one of the best I've been on. Ryan packed it with information -- not just about the distillery's process, but about the history of Minden and the Gardnerville area. It was engaging, educational, and genuinely fun. I walked away with stories and facts I'm still repeating to anyone who will listen. Our tasting covered four pours: vodka, single barrel, bourbon, and the Goodnight Bourbon. The regular bourbon lived up to everything that put this distillery on my map in the first place. But the real surprise of the day? The gin. I'll be honest -- I wasn't expecting much. But this gin is unlike anything I've tasted. It has earned a permanent spot in my home bar for those occasional gin martini nights. And if you have any love for espresso martinis, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of their coffee liqueur. It's exceptional. After the tasting, our group headed upstairs to the bar -- which, by the way, is open to everyone, no tour required. We ordered an espresso martini, a gin martini, and a meringue-tini. Each one was distinct and impressive in its own right. The bar staff couldn't have been better -- they had a real knack for highlighting each spirit in a way that spoke directly to your taste buds. It was the perfect way to close out the afternoon. Minden Mill is the kind of place that checks every box: great craft spirits, a stunning venue, an informative and entertaining tour, and a bar that keeps the good times going. Highly recommend making the trip. And when you go -- ask for Ryan.

We typically like sitting at the bar but bar seats were full so we opted for a table rather than wait. There are both high top and low top seating available as well as bar seating against the windows and fermentation silos. There is also seating outdoors if weather permits. The tables use a bar code scanning system to order food and drinks, then a person will deliver the food. I'm okay with this but I can see why some people would be frustrated with this process. For the appetizer we ordered the POBLANO ARTICHOKE DIP - $16 Artichoke, Poblano Chile, Corn, Cheddar, Colby Jack, Parmesan, Garlic, Mayonnaise, Sour Cream, Cream Cheese. Warmed and served with Pita bread or chips. We elected for the tortilla chips. This is a tasty appetizer and the perfect size for two people. For drinks we ordered two different hot cocktails served almost like a hot tea. Mulling it over - $17 Glass Creek Vodka, Mulled Spice Juice, Lemon. This was quite good and had a little bit of sweetness. The second was The Hot Toddy. $17. American Single Malt Whiskey, Lemon, Honey, Ginger. This tasted a little stronger and no sweetness. Do I think the drinks are a little expensive , yes. But sadly that is what you come across in a ski village. Personally I was a little shocked at how many families with young children were at the distillery but I've noticed that in almost every bar or brewery in Mammoth. Another good but different experience at Shelter Distilling.
