This is our second visit to Shelter Distilling in the last year. We just stopped in for an appetizer and drink. We typically like sitting at the bar but bar seats were full so we opted for a table rather than wait. There are both high top and low top seating available as well as bar seating against the windows and fermentation silos. There is also seating outdoors if weather permits. The tables use a bar code scanning system to order food and drinks, then a person will deliver the food. I'm okay with this but I can see why some people would be frustrated with this process. For the appetizer we ordered the POBLANO ARTICHOKE DIP - $16 Artichoke, Poblano Chile, Corn, Cheddar, Colby Jack, Parmesan, Garlic, Mayonnaise, Sour Cream, Cream Cheese. Warmed and served with Pita bread or chips. We elected for the tortilla chips. This is a tasty appetizer and the perfect size for two people. For drinks we ordered two different hot cocktails served almost like a hot tea. Mulling it over - $17 Glass Creek Vodka, Mulled Spice Juice, Lemon. This was quite good and had a little bit of sweetness. The second was The Hot Toddy. $17. American Single Malt Whiskey, Lemon, Honey, Ginger. This tasted a little stronger and no sweetness. Do I think the drinks are a little expensive , yes. But sadly that is what you come across in a ski village. Personally I was a little shocked at how many families with young children were at the distillery but I've noticed that in almost every bar or brewery in Mammoth. Its not fair to not give 5 stars because of the hardworking employees and quality of food that they offer in Mammoth but ill be very honest before I start talking about food... This place is very too busy and its better to try to get a table before walking. We were lucky to get a table because a family were finished when we arrived but they were so many people with small kids waiting for long. The other thing, they were overstaffed and their menu was a barcode that we were supposed to scan but the problem was it wasnt detailed menu! For example, we didnt know if the burger comes with potatoes or steak sandwich how it'll be cooked! Or the beer, most of the items were out they only had two flavor and all fruity! We visited Shelter Distilling for dinner and found it very busy. Seating was self-serve and we were able to snag a table just as another party was leaving. The vibe inside was industrial but still cozy, with a large chandelier and nice live music. We ordered right from the table (Toast QR Code), which was convenient. All three of us got Hot Chocolates to warm up, which were actually delicious. I was especially impressed by the house-made whipped cream. For food, we shared an order of Fried Cheese Curds, which were awesome. I wish they had come with ranch too, not just ketchup. I was starving, so I ordered both the Beet Salad and Spicy Tuna Hand-roll. Both were just fine. The beets were the best part of the salad, but it wasn't anything memorable. The Hand-roll was filling, but they went pretty heavy on the spicy mayo. My friends also said their food was good, but nothing mind-blowing. Let's be honest, this place had potential but right off the bat you can tell the staff at the bar/ front desk didn't want to help. Came in and waited a few minutes to see the server or bartender can't really make a distinction because they don't seat you or give you a menu they acknowledge you after a few minutes then tell you scan the code and order on your phone. Then it had the audacity to ask for a tip on the computer screen when ordering even they do almost nothing other than bring out your food. Water you have to get up and get yourself also, so literally no service. When they brought the food they brought silverware for one person even though there were three of us, long story short service was awful. A really fun place to check out, right in the heart of Mammoth Lakes Village. Urban hipster vibe, with a view of the working side of the distillery operation. I've always admired the complex labyrinth of water lines, fermentation tanks, etc, required for brewing and distilling. It's beautiful in a steampunk sort of way! Although I didn't sample any of the spirits (this time!) I did try a flight of their craft beers, which included a hard cider that I found truly delightful. So if you want a night out and great service this is not your spot. But drinks in a loud environment with solid food, this is your jam. For appetizers we started with the Serrano and artichoke dip. I loved the Serrano which cut through the richness. We also had the hummus trio which was a huge amount of hummus, I especially loved the pesto flavor. They barely give you enough pita so you have half the hummus left on the plate when you run out of things to dip into it. For the mains I had a sad shrimp taco and a chewy carne asada taco. Being from SoCal and eating good Mexican all the time, I would skip these. The Ahi salad was excellent! And so was the Beet Salad with goat cheese. I'm giving this place a 2/5 stars because our server had such poor customer service. We were super nice + patient waiting for our food but he just did not look like he wanted to help us ... but was SUPER friendly with the customers all around us since he was serving them too. It really felt like he was treating us differently because we were all Asian. While he barely acknowledged our table, he was noticeably warm and attentive to the other customers around us, who were not Asian. Got two tacos, which were actually quite good. The chicken taco was delicious. Service wasn't so great. My order took 45 minutes, while my companions received theirs (also tacos) in about 15 minutes. I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Shelter Distilling in the Mammoth Village. While the location is convenient, the service and food quality were far below expectations. After placing our order, we waited over an hour with no updates. When we politely asked management about the status of our food, the response was noticeably rude and dismissive rather than helpful. Shortly after that interaction, they brought out only one of our five entrees, leaving the rest of the table waiting. The remaining dishes didn't arrive until about an hour and fifteen minutes after we ordered, which made for a very awkward dining experience where everyone was eating at completely different times. Unfortunately, the food itself was also disappointing. We ordered the shishito peppers, sushi rolls, and a Caesar salad. The sushi rolls tasted like old, fishy seafood, which was concerning and unpleasant. The Caesar salad was also strange--it used spring mix instead of traditional romaine, which made it taste off and not like a Caesar at all. Between the long wait, poor service from management, and underwhelming food, this was not a good experience.
