The tasting room, while nothing fancy, is roomy and inviting, with their resident dog greeting everyone who comes in. Personally I like their red more than their white. Unlike other tasting rooms they do not charge a flat rate tasting fee. On the Main Street in downtown Murphys, the tasting room has plenty of seating indoors, along the bar and outside as well. Not sure how much tastings actually cost, but I believe it runs the gamut of most of the fees in the area which average about $15 per person. The owner didn't say how much the fee was but that we would "work something out." I tried about 6-7 different wines, my favorite being a rare Italian varietal (can't recall the name) but at $70 a bottle it was out of my price range. read more

Allegorie is not a wine bar. It is a tasting room owned by Loren Bishop, an excellent wine maker. Educated in vino at UC Davis, Loren produces several excellent wines that he serves without a tasty fee. His strategy is that after tasting, you will enjoy and purchase what you like. He also has a "Non-WineClub" in which your purchases are counted for the year to earn your discount. If you enjoy tasting wines, Allegorie is a great place to visit. read more

Our host, Ellie (I hope I have that right) treated us to an amazing and extensive tasting of so many different varieties, with enough knowledge to not make us feel dumb lol. Because it's a smaller winery, the bottles -- if you choose to buy, you of course don't have to-- are pricey. But, we bought two anyway! Can't recommend this place highly enough. Tasting room was empty when we arrived. We had visited the visitor's center earlier and we given a Free tasting card. When we arrived at the tasting room we didn't mention we had a Free tasting card. The server started serving tiny amount of wine for us to taste. I hadn't seen any wineries do this so I asked. The server didn't answer my question and continued by giving us a tiny amount of wine not enough to swirl or smell the wine. I then opted to end my wine tasting. It was clear we were not welcome even though no one else was in the large tasting room. I don't know how an employee can decide to be rude for no reason to customers. Allegorie wines were new to us, and we were so glad to stop in for a tasting. The tasting was free and if you buy three bottles you get a discount. This is one winery you'll have to try while in Murphy, the reds here are pretty amazing. Our favorites were the Petite Syrahs and Zinfandel, however all of their wines were excellent. The wine maker, who served our wine was great company as well and provided exceptional commentary for each wine that was poured. read more

We visit Allegorie every time we go to Murphys on our way up to Bear Valley. Loren is the owner and is often on site pouring the wine, greeting people and sharing his extensive knowledge of wine making. The wine is wonderful!! Some of the best reds in the region. I am not a white wine person, but even their modest selection of whites and/or Rose, is excellent. The building is an old stone construction type, with a modern but simple interior vibe. Service is also exceptional. They allow dogs inside and have a winery dog that also greets you. Another incredible part of the experience is that they do not charge a tasting fee. We live locally but had a family member visit from out of town so decided to do lunch and wine tasting in Murphy's. I was unfamiliar with this winery and thought it would be fun to give it a try. I'm quite familiar with tasting etiquette and expected to pay a tasting fee. However, there was no fee printed on their menu. The lady helping us was very pleasant and attentive since we were the only customers. In my opinion, the wine was marginal in quality, and I was not interested in purchasing a bottle. At the end of our tasting, the wine maker came in. He overheard us discussing the fact that we were not going to purchase and inserted himself into the conversation. He was extremely angry and condescending. He raised his voice and insisted that we leave the tasting room, not allowing us the opportunity to tip the young lady behind the counter. It was the most disappointing wine experience imaginable. Perhaps the wine maker does not appreciate local patrons nor understand the value of local support. read more

Very disappointed this past weekend... had a group of 9 of us in Murphys and this was our first stop. I have been to this location prior a few yrs back and didn't expect what happened fast forward to this past Saturday. 6 of us walked in and were waiting on the other 3 of our group to come in so we could all taste together. The younger gentleman explained how they're the only ones who do a complimentary tasting around the area and they will waive the fee if bottles are purchased after, or we can each do the $15/pp tasting. Once we all sat down and the tasting began, the gentleman kept pouring and doing his explaining of each wine. Our group wasn't too fond of the wine but kept going and still being friendly. Towards the end the dump bucket was quite full. Then the older gentleman who I believe was the owner came by at the end and was upset we weren't going to buy any bottles yet we were going to pay the $15/pp tasting fee for each person. The younger guy comes back and says there was a miscommunication and I said no there was not. Some of the ones in our group were going to purchase a bottle or 2, and everyone was also willing to each pay the $15. They claimed that they went through 3 bottles total in full for our group of 9 which was quite inaccurate considering that each bottle we tried had hardly a drop of wine poured in each glass. They didn't start pouring with full bottles for each taste. The rudeness and unprofessionalism was astounding. Considering I've been wine tasting in many other areas and also to different tasting rooms in that area as well as Lodi & Napa. I have never seen such rudeness and horrible customer service. The owner came up at the end and raised his voice and told us all to leave as we were all waiting to pay at the end and buy a few bottles. The younger gentleman also seemed offended when one of us had mentioned some of the reds not being very smooth on the palette (just trying to make convo). They lost our business and got $0 from us. We ended up at Pop the Bubbly after! They definitely got our business and we all bought bottles as well as food to munch on! I will never recommend or come back here to this place. Your wine is not even that good to be acting so rude and snooty, remember you're in Murphys not Napa even then, people there aren't half as rude as what we experienced this past weekend. read more

We had a lovely, COVID safe wine tasting experience here! We sat outside in the cute little alley next to the tasting room, and enjoyed the tasting flight that was brought out to us. The wines were good, especially the Chardonnay and Beno Gusto. The staff wore masks, and handled serving and payment outdoors in a manner that felt respectful and safe. I have pleasant memories of visiting Allegorie last summer, in pre-Covid times, gathering around the pianist and enjoying the live music. I look forward experiencing that again. In the meantime, I commend Allegorie for taking Covid-19 seriously and creating a safe wine tasting experience during this surreal time. read more

We stopped in for some wine tasting the other day. First we started with the wine makers wife trying to serve my 17 yr old and said "oops I should have known that" when I said she can't drink she's a minor. Then the dog growled at my 5yr old scaring her. The wine was okay, but we did not purchase any. The pours are very small as you try about 9 or 10 of them but we couldn't really decide if we like them because it was one sip. The tasting was free (I didn't know this until the end) but the wine makers wife seemed put off we didn't want to purchase any wine. This spot is inviting for sure. There is plenty of space to sit (at the bar with a relaxing water fountain or the tables set out around the room). The decor is earthy and it seems to be going for a zen theme with their mini waterfall and the middle of the bar has a strip of water running through it. It was pretty cool and I've never seen something like it before! The rest of the space was filled with local art which was available for purchase as well. Our wine steward was friendly and professional. She encouraged comments and questions and provided detailed answers. She really knew how to involve everyone in the room and was truly educational. This person is essential in selling not only the wine but the overall experience in wine tasting; she definitely hit all of those expectations. I believe we tasted 6-7 wines. It costs $10 per person but depending on the number of bottles you buy the fees are waived. In our case we needed up purchasing two bottles so it came out to be about $65 (and both mine and my husband' fee were waived). There was a wide range of wines to taste. I'm not usually a white wine person but this Chardonnay was refreshing and enjoyable. For example, our expert explained to us how their grapes are aged in steel cases instead of the oak and it has been a process that is currently changing. Pretty cool. Last their reds were so smooth and memorable. We purchased the Barbera and Bene Gusto. In addition I'm a sucker for great packaging and their design is beautiful as you'll see in the photos. So I called and made a reservation to do winetasting. Went to the address that's on the website on Main and it was closed. While it wasn't flowing with water on the occasion of our winter 2016 visit for a twin tasting (we had a complimentary tasting card from a previous visit to Val du Vino), it reminds you that this spot was designed to showcase the owner's artwork and those of other artists, which fills the space in display cases, tables, and shelves all around. There are unique and affordable pieces for purchase here: bracelets, earrings, rings, necklaces, alongside collectible, giftable items from $15-$50 and higher for more elaborate pieces. So don't come here just for the wine. It is only one of the pleasures you will encounter when you visit. The wine choices vary, in selection and quality, with most made by the winemaker at Val du Vino for Allegorie, while several others are sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Lodi, including a very good Chardonnay and light sparkling Prosecco style white wine. In contrast with some of the tasting rooms in Murphys like Hatcher, which lean towards exposed walls, big red wines, and dark, candle-lit atmospherics, Allegorie is bright, airy, inclusive, and inviting. It feels like an art museum in miniature, an intimate gallery space in which affordable and enjoyable wines are available as tasting flights or by the glass. Allegorie literally opened yesterday. Fact. Located in a former art gallery, Allegorie features art and wines for tasting and purchase. The art includes sculptures and jewelry created by local artists. Very lovely pieces I might add. The wines are made by Val du Vino, which in my opinion, has some of the best wines in the county. The tasting room is managed by Ellie, the niece of Val du Vino's owners. The decor is lovely. A water channel flows through the bar and culminates at a little water fall which goes into a Koi pond. Very soothing and relaxing touch. The wines range from Viognier to Tempranillo. My absolute favorite was the Rendezvous Rouge. Oh my goodness! Gorgeous bouquet and scrumptious taste. I was seriously in love with that wine. It is currently sold as a future release. Can't wait until the official release! Cheers! read more

DANG!! What a cool place!! Art and wine together at last. And not your regular boring art either -- this is some really cool and unique stuff. Paintings, sculptures, textiles....check it out if you get a chance! And if you can't go in person, take a look at the photos I posted. The wine bar itself is very cool as well -- a little stream runs along the back of it and trickles into a koi pond at the end. Eee! Don't dump your wine in the stream though. They don't want a bunch of drunk upside-down fishies. The wines are tasty as well, and the bottles are quite pretty. I know you shouldn't base your opinion of a wine on its label, but it sure does have some initial curb appeal potential if you do it right. My favorite was the Bene Gusto red blend, and my husband loved the Cabernet Sauvignon. The guy pouring was a lot of fun to talk with and we had a great time visiting here. Came here a few months ago for the first time with my boyfriend and we loved the wines we tried -- I was even tempted to buy a case! In the end I settled on a Chardonnay, which is also funny because usually that's my least favorite white variety. Theirs is light, delicious, and perfect for a warm day. I visited again recently with a group of friends for my birthday and we were all so impressed by everything we tasted. Another gold rush is occurring in this region, but this time it is grapes. Although grapes have been grown in this area for a long time, they weren't a significant contributor to the California wine industry. But big things have small beginnings. The growth is just starting in the upscale touristy town of Murphy's - ground zero with over a dozen small tasting rooms. It's like a young Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, or Philo, but before production increased and brought more money and tourists. Whether any growth takes hold remains to be seen as more vineyards are planted, but a visit to Murphys and tasting rooms like Allegorie is worth a try for those who like following wine trails. Allegorie makes a sparkling wine which shows an adventurous attitude, but is also a sign of their unbridled winemaking style that produced uneven results. But chances are one of the bottles is going come up aces and I found a bottle worthy of purchasing which also eliminated the $3 tasting fee. read more

You truly only get one chance to make a first impression, and you failed. I always assume these establishments are "for profit". I walked in today to check it out while my family was shopping next door. I asked for a glass of their Merlot, since it's my favorite wine, and there was no need for me to wade thru wines that I may not care for to get to the Merlot. The lady replied that they were only in the business of "selling by the bottle". A little surprised by her reply, I asked for a tasting then, and I'm always 100% happy to pay for what I ask for. She motioned over to some guy sitting at a close table and he appeared to wave it off, I'm assuming his motioning said no. I walked out and will never step foot in this establishment again.
