As I continue to be on the quest for a quality donut shop, "Marie's Donuts" has got to be one of…read morethe most recognizable, historic, and well-known places in all of Sacramento. Ever since opening back in 1957 (when Elvis, penny loafers, and peak Chevy Bel-Air were at the peak of their popularity), the original owner Hugo Argento named this donut shop after his wife, Marie. Even though their marriage didn't last long, this business has withstood the test of time. Located directly at 21st Ave/Freeport Blvd and directly next door to the wildly popular "Freeport Bakery", this place is situated smack dab in between Land Park & Curtis Park. Keep in mind that I have been to Marie's Donuts on numerous occasions dating back to when I first made Sacramento my home back in 2001. However, I haven't been here for several years and decided to pay a visit on the morning of Sunday 10/25/2026 at around 8:55am. The business itself does have a small dedicated parking lot; however, it is quite small and can fill up on any given day. There is free street parking readily available as I parked only a block away from the building itself. To those regulars, there is no actual indoor area and no seating. Meaning that every order is taken at the window. The selection here is vast as they carry a wide assortment of plain, old-fashioned, frosted, glazed, jelly-filled, maple chocolate bars, whipped cream-filled, cinnamon rolls, bear claws, eclairs, apple fritters, various muffins, donut holes, and much more. One interesting part of the ordering process is that the employees are all behind a glass window. However, they knew exactly what type of donuts we wanted. My guess is that there are tiny speakers integrated where they could hear the customers from the other side. Either way, they got everything right. We ended up buying a dozen which were priced very reasonable at only $16.50 for a wide variety. We got a mix of glazed, powdered donut holes, a maple bar, and other various donuts. And everything was placed neatly inside of a pink/white striped box. The employees were very sweet, attentive, and quick as the line moved quickly. Even with at least 8 customers ahead of us, the whole wait in line, order, and payment process took around five minutes. Keep in mind that if you spend less than $5.00 (and you are using a card), there is a fee. However, they do accept tap-to-pay and of course, cash. All in all, whether it's for a taste of nostalgia, "Marie's Donuts" is absolutely the real deal and as good as it gets. Not only is this one of Sacramento's most beloved spots for a sweet treat but their donuts (and everything else) are absolutely delicious, fresh, and made with love. I also wanted to add that they offer very generous hours of operation being open Tuesday through Sunday from 10pm-4pm while being closed from 4-10pm. Keep in mind that they are closed on Monday. And finally, to those that live on the north side of town, they have a 2nd location on Watt Ave/Don Julio Blvd in North Highlands. With amazing donuts, prime location, excellent service, and very reasonable prices, Marie's Donuts receives a perfect five-star rating.

They're especially good when they're fresh, although sometimes they're so fresh that the chocolate or maple topping hasn't had a chance to set yet, so it can be a little melty. So good that my partner at the time became obsessed with it and actually requested one of Baker's GIANT donuts for her birthday. I swear I have never seen anyone happier to receive a birthday donut in my life. That should tell you everything you need to know about how good these donuts are. It's been a while since I've lived in Sacramento, but Baker's is one of those places I still think about and absolutely have to visit whenever I'm back in town. I'll be in Sacramento again this month, and this is already on my list of stops. Some places are nostalgic because of the memories -- Baker's is nostalgic because the donuts are actually THAT damn good.

I was on the fence between the blueberry cheesecake and the peach cobbler. I really wanted a scoop of both, but I just wasn't that hungry. I decided on the peach cobbler, and I'm still dreaming about it. The sweet peaches, the essence of cream, and that buttery slightly salty crust. My only complaint is that they sometimes run out of stock because they're THAT good! We don't care much for the donuts as they are a bit dry and there are many other great donut spots that serve soft fluffy donuts. The kolaches and staxx are what keep bringing us back. Staxx have been a favorite in our family for years. My kids have loved their sweet breads since they were babies, so there's definitely a lot of nostalgia attached to this place for us. It's one of those spots that has become part of our family's little traditions, and we always look forward to coming back!

The presentation was extravagant as there were gold flakes on top of the frosting. For $8 it was overpriced and I wouldn't order it again. The croissant donut holes were amazing! They were made using croissant dough which provided a nice flaky texture with the taste of a donut. They were $4.50 for a dozen. I would definitely order these scrupmtious treats again!

Bang average, with prices that suggest they're serving gold leaf…read more TOMO Tea House is one of those places where the presentation is doing considerably more heavy lifting than the food. The chilli wonton soup was genuinely good, probably the standout for me. I'd happily go back for that. The cinnamon rolls were alright. I tried the Biscoff Crunch, Dubai Pistachio with Strawberry, Cookies & Cream, and Banana Pudding flavours. They looked the part and were decent enough, but nothing that had me thinking, "Bloody hell, I need another one of these." The waffles, unfortunately, were a different story. They weren't cooked properly through the middle, chewy and gooey rather than crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. The Biscoff flavour was also barely noticeable. The drinks are very much geared towards the social-media crowd: lots of milk, lots of toppings, lots of visual appeal. If you enjoy taking a photo of your drink before taking a sip, you'll probably have a field day. And then there's the price. For what you're actually getting, it feels rather steep. The food is, at best, mediocre in several areas, yet the prices seem to suggest these ingredients were mined personally by King Charles. Ironically, I actually would have gone back for the chilli wontons, banana pudding and Biscoff pudding. But the experience around their influencer/collaboration side left a rather sour taste. If you're a collaborator or influencer, BE WARNED! No real communication or courtesy message. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but if you're going to deal with people, a simple response goes a long way. But then again, they perhaps cherry-pick whom to interact with based on their social media activity. And finally, watching someone at the counter struggle with some basic maths while taking an order was certainly an experience. I'm all for supporting people, but perhaps the calculator deserves a little more screen time than the Instagram account. Overall: some genuinely good items buried underneath a lot of hype, presentation and rather ambitious pricing. I'd happily return for a couple of the things I enjoyed, but I wouldn't be rushing back for the overall experience. Food: 3/10 Value: 2/10 Presentation: 8/10 Social-media appeal: 10/10 Would I return? For the chilli wontons and a couple of puddings, yes. For the rest... probably not.
