We wanted to undertake a full main floor renovation, which included our kitchen, living room, a bedroom, a bathroom and a new pantry. We had used a previous contractor for our oupstairs renovation and we had a good experience with them but decided to use Hills Construction for this project, and we could not be any happier with the results. From day one Alan and his crew made this project move forward as smoothly as possible. He was very easy to communicate with and was very responsive to calls, texts and emails. He was very proactive when it came to issues that arose and usually had a solution at the ready before we even had to address it with him. Alan stayed on within days of the schedule for a several month project, ended exactly on budget, and I was very happy with the final product. The work concluded close to a year ago and everything has stood the test of time well. I recommended him to friends and plan to use him again if I do further construction. He responded to all communication during the job within 24 hours, although usually much faster. He was honest the whole time, never tried to upsell me on anything, and set my expectations a little low and then exceeded them. He let me know at the beginning that mine was the smallest job that he was working on at the time. I appreciated the openness and was expecting that to result in some unexpected delay while he focused on his other projects, but it never happened. Also my previous experiences with other contractors - and almost all the contractor stories I've heard through family and friends - involve some budget, schedule, or work quality problem, so I was ready for some unexpected headache just because that seems to be standard with contractors, but there were no surprises with Alan. And for what it's worth, he was a really nice person to work with, and I always saw him interacting collaboratively and respectfully with his subcontractors. They seemed highly motivated to work for him. (My work consisted of a small expansion with a larger internal reconfiguration including new foundation, reframing, removal of a load-bearing wall, installation of windows and doors, electrical, masonry work, new and refinishing of hardwood flooring, re-roofing, and of course all of the finish paint and trim.) read more

The project included the plumbing, electrical, patching/painting, cabinets, flooring, countertop and backslpash installation. Alan Hills and his team carried out a major remodeling of our newly purchased home in Los Gatos. It was a complete gut job of large scope, and involved every aspect of the construction: drawings, city permits, framing new walls, siding and stud replacements, new water and natural gas plumbing, new electric wiring and fixtures throughout, new concrete patio, tiling with 9 different tile designs, 38 new doors and windows, glass enclosures, mirrors, carpentry, moldings, new staircase and hardwood flooring throughout, HVAC, appliance installation, cabinets, countertops, drywall, extra smooth wall refinishing, painting, and city permits. All three bathrooms were expanded, completely reconfigured, and redone anew, as was the kitchen. The end result was outstanding. Both my wife and I are extremely pleased with it, and the credit goes to Alan Hills. Alan proved to be honest, straightforward, focused on pleasing the customer, very knowledgeable, responsive, reasonable, and flexible. In addition, he has hired a group of in-house contributors who share his values, are very honest, competent, and hard working. Among them, his trusted right-hand man, Leonel, is a gem. Alan has also carefully selected and retained a large number of sub-contractors in every single category, who are by and large as good as they come. Above all, Alan is a very nice guy, and a pleasure to work with. I need to qualify my comments by stating that my background is in the very demanding Silicon Valley semiconductor industry, and my standards are extremely high. Living in San Jose, we've worked with several contractors. Out of the multitudes that we've employed, Hills Construction is the only one that we'll be calling for our future needs. Alan and his team are professionals. When we called Alan, I explained to him that our project was a smaller one compared to the many that he has. We needed a new paver driveway and walkways, new stucco on our home and paint. In my experience, when a contractor quotes a job, he either quotes cheap, to win the business and figures that once you're into the project he can hit you with extras, or he quotes expensive, recognizing that the Bay Area is a hotbed for all real estate and that you might confuse price with professionalism. When I called Alan, I explained my exact thoughts with him as well. He understood exactly what I meant. His quote wasn't the cheapest, but was realistic for the job that we asked for. Throughout the project he was great about working with us on any changes and was reasonable in adjusting quotes accordingly. Everything along the way was documented. For me, the best thing about working with Hills Construction was that when Alan told us that someone would be coming by, they came by. I've known Alan Hills for over 7 years now and he's the best contractor that I have ever worked with. He helped us retrofit/renovate our 10,000 sf historic home and rebuilt our guesthouse. Due to the age and condition of the main house, the retrofit project was a very challenging endeavor with many unknowns and an unclear scope of work. Many contractors shied away from taking on a complicated project of this scale. The main reason we selected Alan was because we believed that he was an honest contractor who was very excited about the job and up for the challenge. We couldn't have made a better better choice. I firmly believe that our job would've been a nightmare, with a much steeper price tag, if anyone else but Alan was the contractor. Alan is not greedy, like many of the other Contractors. He's honest and very competent Contractor, who really cares about his clients and goes out of his way to make sure that they are satisfied with the work that he's doing for them. He's very fair in his pricing and unlike many contractors doesn't low bid you and then try to get you on change orders. Many contractors fail to include many things that they know you're going to need in their original bid to keep their price low, counting on charging you an arm an leg for them once they have the job. Alan doesn't do that. He'll be upfront with you when he gives a bid, making sure that everything that's needed for the successful completion of your project is included in the bid. When unknowns or changes come up during the project, he is very fair in his pricing. I went through my entire project without a single official change order! There were many unknowns and subsequently changes, but we just verbally agreed on them and he charged me time and materials. When you trust your Contractor, time and materials is often the cheapest and easiest way to deal with changes. Alan has very good and competent workers, who are very loyal to him because he treats them well. He's just a good guy. He is now our designated family contractor and a dear friend.
