Fried chicken, white fish, country ham, green beans, baked apples, mashed potatoes, corn, pinto beans, hoe cake and cornbread
    Amanda H.

I've lived in the triad for almost 17 yrs, and I just visited Hillbilly Hideaway for the first time. It was a Friday night and it was busy. No need to wait for a menu as the menu is set. There was an employee pushing the drink cart around. It's pretty much sweet tea, unsweet tea, water, and lemonade. While we Sat there after getting our drinks someone came to check on us, turned out is was the owner. She explained how it worked and that her parents were the ones that opened Hillbilly Hideaway and that she intended on keeping it in the family and the exact way her parents had done it. When our food arrived I was shocked. Friday nights menu consists of fried chicken, country ham, fried white fish, mashed potatoes, green beans, pinto beans, baked apples, corn, coleslaw, cornbread and a huge hoe cake. Neither of us dining area coleslaw people and the owner returned with extra green beans in place of it. I tried all the meats but the fried chicken was my favorite. I loved geen beans when they're cooked properly, I ate almost both bowls of the green beans, and half the pintos. The potatoes were nice and the how cake were delicious. The corn was lack luster for me but that's no big deal. The service and food were wonderful. It's very rustic inside which I liked. It also appears they have live music on the weekend. I will definitely go back!

Never, have I ever, had a bad meal or service from Hillbilly Hideaway. Here's to another solid! When I want good country cooking, I plan a week in advance to go to Hillbilly Hideaway. Family style dining, all you can eat Friday special of fried chicken and fish, pure heaven! Drink of sweet tea or lemonade is included with the meal. The food comes out hot and plentiful. The pinto beans creamy, firm, and thick! Chicken and fish hot and crispy. Hands down this is some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Coleslaw is cold and firm, creamy and sweet. Although the mashed potatoes falls flat in my opinion it is made up by the many other sides that accompanies the meal. The country ham isn't overly salty and pairs well with the flap Jack biscuits. The atmosphere is very rustic. You won't get frills and thrills here but what you will get is good southern hospitality. The "can I get you anything else sweetheart?" makes it hard to say no but eventually you have to drag yourself out of that booth or table and to your car. I highly recommend Hillbilly Hideaway!

Pintos are not my thing, but they too need some seasoning.

It makes me really happy to know that this place is still just as amazing as I remembered it being as a kid. It had been a solid 20 years since my last visit, but recently my sister and I had the idea to take our Dad and our spouses out there to see what it was all about as we had many fond memories. I was apprehensive at first. It's easy to love a place when you're a teenager if they're just bringing you tons of comfort food. I wondered if a mix of teenage insatiable hunger and nostalgia were masking what was actually more like Golden Corral style food, which I now loathe. Thankfully, this couldn't have been farther from the case. The food here is the real deal. Some of it is just fine, most of the rest is great, and a few items are OUTSTANDING. The only things that could use improvement were things you probably don't care much about. The pintos, green beans, and corn could all use some flavoring, definitely salt. I am sure their intention is for you to add it at the table, and they keep the salt content low to help out some of their older patrons that are minding their intake. I did that, and they were fine. But my focus was definitely turned toward the items were more appealing, like the awesome meatloaf, the crispy and delicious fried chicken, and country ham biscuits (hoecakes they call them). Y'all. If you know me, you know I am a biscuit connoisseur. You also know how much I love the biscuits at The Biscuit Factory in High Point. These hoecakes... are better. That's right. They are at least as good, if not better, than my favorites. I could absolutely go to this place and just pile back hoecakes, filling myself on their pillowy buttery goodness. I would love a country style breakfast with one of these covered in sausage gravy. It may be a decent drive outside of town, but you could definitely call this place a Triad institution, and for anyone that hasn't lived here most of their lives, a hidden gem. Make your drive out to Walnut Cove. Bring your loved ones. Load up on southern comfort at it's finest from a family restaurant passed down across generations!

Another great restaurant! If you like good ole Southern, home-style cookin' this is the place!! Served family style - fried chicken, ribs, country ham, meatloaf and lots of veggies. Menu is slightly different night but always chicken and two other meats. Mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, pintos, stewed apples, and slaw, Eat it all and they'll bring you more of anything. Desert cart contains banana pudding, chocolate, strawberry, and red velvet cakes. It is in the middle of nowhere - between Pine Hall and Walnut Cove. It is rustic with a capital "R". Worth the ride. Reasonably priced. Friendly staff. We'll return.

I recently went to Hillbilly Hideaway for the first time with my wife and inlaws. It has been a place of legend for my in-laws. It was framed as this great all you can eat place, a solid 35-40 min outside Greensboro with this amazing southern food. I had my doubts when I listened to these tall tales, as I'd been very disappointed with other recommendations from my in-laws with similar legendary status, one being a specific unnamed cafeteria place. Was this going to be actually good or it was just nostalgic to them? Well I was extremely pleased to experience that this place actually is legendary. The food arrives all at once, probably within about 10 minutes of us sitting down. The corn, beans, and green beans are good but generally fairly plain. The mashed potatoes ate clearly made fresh and the gravy is solid. The coleslaw is a vinegar based slaw with an awesome tanginess. The fried chicken is great American southern fried chicken, nice and crispy with good meat. The country ham is nice and salty. The cornbread was also very good. There were two unreal stand out items: the meatloaf and the biscuits. These were by far the best things they served us. The meatloaf always super soft with great spices (not spicy at all, but super flavorful). And the biscuits were crisp on the edges and soft as clouds on the inside, but buttery and perfection. The owner and server both took great care of us, refilling our drinks and the food as needed. The owner was super nice and genuine, her parents owned it before her and she's been running it since, still with several cooks who have been there since her parents owned the place. This place is a certified gem, it's a feast for a good price and great southern cooking. Go make the drive to this place sometime.

What a interesting restaurant. Its a family style restaurant, which is they have a select meal each day they are open , you get seated and get drinks , then they bring you the food., that night it was catfish, fried chicken , fried apples, corn ,mash potatoes and gravy, Lots of seating, great place to take your family. Its a Out in the middle of nowhere. The have a dance hall building. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I joined my family and drove 35 minutes to the middle of NOWHERE to find this little gem. For my family (in-laws), this was a very nostalgic trip. They frequented here as children. And it's not changed since! The original owner's daughter now runs this restaurant and she told us they have the same cooks when they opened decades ago. Very friendly and attentive staff. Now onto the food. This is a quintessential southern family meal. It's great because there is no need to order. You sit, are offered drinks, and then they start bringing out the food! You get to fill your plate with choices of: meatloaf, country baked ham, fried chicken, beans, mashed potatoes, corn, slaw, baked apples, and top it off with hoecakes and cornbread. It was like Thanksgiving growing up in the south! Everything was well-prepared. Some of the sides, like corn and beans, weren't anything to rave about, but it's exactly what you would expect. Their meatloaf and chicken were amazing. And the hoecakes. Man. I'd come out for three baskets of those. This is a great family restaurant to visit and take your time to eat. It can be a bit of a trek, but it's absolutely worth it!

I came here multiple times as a kid. I was a picky eater but of course loved many of the Southern classics this place had to offer like Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, country ham, and hot cakes (I still love all these things). Not to mention it was all you can eat for a set price. I loved staring at the very decorated walls of random nick-nacks and memorabilia which as customers you were also allowed to sign and draw on. We have lots of fond childhood memories at Hillbilly Hide-A-Way as a family. But for whatever reason we haven't been in many years. Well a few months ago, we decided to make the 30 plus minute drive to Hillbilly Hide-A-Way as adults and see if it held up to what we remember. My husband often accuses me of holding onto nostalgia food experiences and doesn't think the food is "good." He went on this journey assuming this would be the same. Well let me tell you what, we all agreed at the end of this meal that this place is delicious, including my husband! #winning So in case you haven't been, here's what to expect. As I said it's all you can eat and the food comes out on carts pushed by your waiter/waitress. Food includes Fried Chicken, Meatloaf, Hotcakes, Cornbread, Country Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Baked Beans, Fried Apples, Corn, Green Bean, and Slaw. Food is served family style in simple baskets and bowls. While presentation may not be fancy, the food flavor is there. The highlights for me are the meats and the hotcakes. The fried chicken has nice and crispy skin, but still very moist inside. The meatloaf was a surprise stand out for me this time. It was very well prepared, seasoned, and saucy. It just had a great comforting flavor you just wanted more of. The country ham was perfectly salty and amazing in a makeshift sandwich with the Hot cakes. Lordy the hot cakes. First of all they are huge, and oh so flaky and buttery. All of the sides are good enough, but the veggies are likely from a can and could use a little love. I did really like their vinegar based slaw as I am not a Mayo person. The mashed potatoes and gray as well as fried apples are the best sides and helped complete the southern meal. Dessert is extra, but we were so full eating rounds of all that food, we didn't order any. Loved that the owner came around and spoke to our table. She was absolutely lovely and it was great to hear that she is the daughter of the original owner. Also, some of the cooks are original staff. I am sure this is a huge factor in what has kept this place to the same caliber of what I remember as a kid. This place is a perfect example of "if it ain't broke" as we all left with happy, fully bellies and hearts. I promise not to wait so many years to come back again!

I am happy to to say that in my first year as a Yelp Elite writer, I have written over 60 reviews. I tell you this to impress upon you the significance of what I am about to say in that I have never said it in any of my reviews before; even White Castle hamburgers! GET TO HILLBILLY HIDEAWAY AS FAST AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN! I could wrap up my review right now with that statement, but let me give you a little background to wet your appetite, but this place is a must-see, must go, must eat ASAP. When I first started falling in love with North Carolina, one of the amazing places I was introduced to by my ex-wife was Hillbilly Hideaway. It's around a half hour drive from Greensboro in Walnut Cove but it is a serene and lovely ride through Oak Ridge and Stokesdale. I have gone there off and on since the '80s and it has never, ever changed. I remember precious memories of bringing my Mother and Grandmother there. Can you imagine? My Grandmother from the Bronx who had been kosher her whole life being served country ham and biscuits. But she loved it and we all loved it. It is the go-to place when I have friends visiting me from other parts of the country who want to experience real country cooking. The setting is perfect. It's in the middle of nowhere, but all is green and rolling hills. It's a big old restaurant with a wide front porch with plenty of seating outside. In the warmer months there's a cute little country store on the property with lots of locally made treats. But let's get back to the restaurant and that unbelievable food. So your meal at Hillbilly Hideaway is family style. As soon as you sit down you are greeted by one of the friendly staff who bring you your drink. Before you know it, this rolling kitchen cart from heaven rolls up beside your table. It is everything you could have ever dreamed of for a good Southern country meal. Fried chicken to die for, meatloaf that is out of this world, the most delicious country ham I have ever tasted, the most incredible biscuits I have ever devoured, scrumptious creamy mashed potatoes, tasty stewed apples and on and on and on. And all you have to do is ask them and they are happy to bring you more and more and more. I recently went to Hillbilly Hideaway with my kids and their spouses. My kids reminded me that the last time they were there was when they were in high school. Wow! We had the best time devouring all that delicious food that was just as good as it was when they were teens. A special treat for us this time was that the owner's daughter now runs the restaurant and we had the opportunity to chat with her. She spotted my Hairspray baseball cap and told me that her daughter was in a production of Hairspray which led to a conversation amongst all of us and our interest in theater. You could see that she loved the restaurant just as much as her Mom and Dad did who ran it when I went in the old days. We ate and ate until the cows came home and I still regret not trying to eat one more of those out of this world biscuits. In the warmer months, I believe on Saturday, they have a social hall down the road a bit where they host local musicians. It is a special treat to sit there and watch wonderful vocal and instrumental talent from the mountains and surrounding areas come to Hillbilly Hideaway to share their music with us after or before dinner. It's the real deal!!! Try to come when that's going on. It's very special and very entertaining. In the end, it cost approximately $20 a person which my kids and I all agreed was very fair for the abundance and the quality of what we had just eaten and experienced. Wow! That meal is just freaking phenomenal!!! So my friends, put on your loosest clothes, starve yourself all day, do yourself a big big favor and take a ride north to Hillbilly Hideaway and have one of the most amazing meals you ever will have in North Carolina!

Beans, mash, meatloaf, apples, slaw, green beans, corn, gravy, Fried chicken, baked Ham, cornbread and their special Hoe Cake!

Between excellent service, from the host to the kitchen staff, and being a bright, cheery place decorated in a modern farmhouse feel (only complaint is the HARD seating), we love this place. The food is always delicious and seasoned perfectly with FLAVOR. For the appetizer, the Salad Pizza is absolutely scrumptious and was recommended by our server our first visit here last year. Honestly, it keeps bringing us back. The flavors are incredible. It has feta, mozzarella, topped with organic greens, shaved onions, tossed in a lemon/dijon dressing with shaved parmesan. It's a flavor bomb in the mouth. The meatloaf, is to die for. If you're a meatloaf eater this is for you. It's so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. Melts in your mouth and the sauce on top is the perfect blend of sweet and savory to top it off. For my two sides this time I chose the fried brussels sprouts and the greens. The greens are always seasoned perfectly and the brussels sprouts were crispy and full of flavor. They tasted even better dipped in my meatloaf sauce so that was a win-win. My boyfriend had the special which was short ribs. For his two sides, he had greens and green beans. The short rib was perfectly tender and absolutely delicious full of flavor and moist for him. The green beans and the greens were also perfect as well full of flavor, just enough fat and butter. It's a great little date spot or a family dinner. They also have outdoor seating covered with umbrellas. There's a bar inside with a TV if you choose to go watch sports and the food here is always on point full of flavor and makes you want to come back and try more things on the menu. Staff is great, ambience is charming. It's a cool spot with good people. The food was pretty hit or miss. The loaded tots seemed interesting, but really...the just end up a little greasy and kind of unnecessary. Overall flavor is mudled and you don't really get anything by throwing duck on tots. I was hoping it would be one of those dishes that just magically work and are fantastic...but eh, kind of a let down. We also shared a bunch of other dishes. The pimento cheese sandwich was tasty but really hard to eat (the cheese pours out of it). We had their pasta, the duck sandwich (again. It was ok. Not great) the grain bowls seemed enjoyable, etc. We also got some desserts to share. The bourbon bread pudding again, was a pretty big let down. There was generally nothing bourbon about it. The chocolate tart was ok. The food wasn't bad, it just felt like some key items that they seemed to use to elevate their menu as a whole were just misses. But there are absolutely some solid dishes on the menu. The price is also a little high for what you get.

And offer specials each day. Lots of meat options and veggie options. Including salad, which isn't always available in a homestyle southern restaurant. The roasted potatoes that are available only on Fridays were my favorite part of the platter. So flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The Mac n cheese was also very good. Creamy and cheesy. The hush puppies were HUGE and very crispy. Loved them. I ordered along with two coworkers. Coworker one is now in love with this place and wants to order at least once a week. Coworker two ordered meatloaf and said it was quite tasty. Negatives: Be prepared for the salt!!!!! We ordered from here twice. We got the chicken pie both times and it was wayyyyy to salty. The first order I was able to combine with the potatoes and Mac n cheese to make it edible. But the second order, all the sides were salty too and I ended up not being able to finish most of the plate. It was also disappointing because I'd ordered chicken tenders but received the chicken pie instead. While I'm wary of ordering in the future because the food is salty, my coworker loves it and we'll order again. Hopefully I can explore more of the menu and find the perfect dish and come back for a higher rating.
