Haven't been here since we moved back, made a quick lunch run. Not accustomed to having meat on my chili relleno - will ask for that to be removed next time. However, salsa was very good and tasted as though they had made it. Too many Mexican Restaurants in our area have salsa that taste like its bought in bulk from Sams Club. I meant to write this review after our first visit a week ago, but we made it back again and here I am. This place is awesome. We do small road trips all over, and we spend a lot of time around Walnut Cove. We finally made the decision to stop and eat here as another favorite, The Milk Bar, was closed. The minute we entered we knew we had found a hidden gem. Friendly, smiling faces were the norm, all the wait staff was amazing! The restaurant itself is open, airy and has a wonderful atmosphere. We enjoyed the home made salsa and chips while we decided what we wanted. Delicious! The ordering was easy and straight forward, and our food came out in record time! Everything we ordered was delicious, (buffalo and regular shrimp tacos) and the flautas were beyond good. We were welcomed by both managers on duty and we knew we had found a happy place. We were out wandering again this week, and even though we had left Walnut Cove abs were back in Winston, when the subject of dinner came up we knew we had to drive back to El Cabo. The fajitas were our choice this trip and they did not disappoint. Several of the employees remembered us from our 1 visit, and came over to greet us and chit chat for a minute. Having that kind of friendly staff is what puts a place head and shoulders above others. We are now regulars there and we know we will enjoy many futures meals there. First visit to this new location in downtown Walnut Cove...not sure why it took me so long. Very clean restaurant and friendly staff. The lunch menu is available until 2:30p. My husband and I stopped in on a Wednesday and wine was half price...woohoo! We shared a lunch plate and cheese dip...and of course the chips and salsa. All was fantastic! The restaurant has the usual extensive Mexican menu. They do serve beer, wine and spirits. Tables are spaced for social distancing. There is outdoor seating. Will definitely be back! read more

The food here tastes great. However, if you live around town and order takeout like we do a few times a week and ask for chips and salsa at lunch. You will ALWAYS receive a 2.5 inch cup that is filled with a tiny bit of salsa and a handful of chips. I have never understood this. If you go into the restaurant to eat, you can get a bowl full! I have asked several times when placing my order over the phone for a whole cup full since I'm paying the same amount at takeout but this is what I always get. Too bad. Not sure what their problem(s) are. Not busy, but service was horrible. It took forever to be waited on. Equally long to bring the drinks, which they got wrong. Never did come back with straws, but I got some from the bar. Brought out our cheese dip, but failed to leave any napkins or silverware. Tonight was just horrible. I've been here several times, and waited to post my review to make sure whats what. The first and most important thing you need to know about this place is Taco Tuesday! They have specials posted with some really great deals on traditional tacos. If you get their specialty taco's then hold onto your taste buds. The BBQ chicken taco is amazing. Slow cooked marinated chicken on a soft taco with cabbage and fresh herbs on top. Add cheese and their special sauce and you have one of the and most unique and best tasting taco's around. Same for the steak taco. Grilled marinated strips of steak with lettuce fresh herbs cheese, and a different sauce. The sauces really make this place stand out. Of course you get complimentary chips and salsa. There is a little variation on the salsa from day to day. Some days its a little too watery for me, other days its good. The service here is always great. Fast and friendly. I've never had a problem sitting where I want, and most of the time they ask me or just tell me to sit where I like. I think the value is good. 3 specialty tacos and tea out the door for less than a 10 spot? Thats a super value. All in all I would highly recommend this place, especially on Tuesday!! read more

So we ate here once before COVID. It was less than average then but As a local, we try to support all our local businesses. We stopped in tonight because it was on the way home and we were hungry. It's not that there is anything bad about the restaurant, but the whole experience is mediocre at best. The wait staff are more interested in talking to their friends instead of "waiting " . We ordered the Margaritas and waited for 20 minutes for them to make it from the bar to the table. The food is ok, but honestly would go to Taco Bell for more authentic Mexican. read more

Not my favorite place to eat Mexican food. The food is decent but not all that great. Sometimes the staff seems indifferent, like they don't care if you are there or not. I have sat many times with few people in the restaurant while wait staff talks amongst themselves. I pretty much only go here when I have to. I will give them one thing they will give you a really good strong alcohol drink. In my opinion this is the one thing that keeps them going. read more

I ate at El Cabo again on Sunday the 26th for dinner. I actually ate in this time. I ordered the Arroz Con Pollo. Basically chicken on top of rice with cheese sauce. The plate didn't look too appetizing when it first came out. But it actually tasted pretty good. They might want to work on presentation. My wife got two chicken burritos like she always does. Very interesting experience here ... The hostess asked us if we wanted to sit at a booth or table, I pointed at a particular booth, yet, she took us across the room. (She was not friendly at all, then we noticed her shift ended after being seated within 10 minutes. Totally understandable, it can be tiring, but attitude is everything.) We, my friends and family, noticed that white people were seated on one side of the restaurant and Hispanic people were seated on the other side. We saw a group of Hispanic men walk in the restaurant and again, they were seated in the area where Hispanic people sat .... I don't know what the deal was about ... Is this restaurant segregating?!?!?! The food was okay, definitely overpriced. Our server was wonderful, she checked in our table frequently. This was our first visit to this restaurant and Danbury. Ate here after a fishing trip on the Dan. The town is a hole in the wall but this restaurant is as good and as nice as anything you'd find in a major city. I am a local and I am here to tell you. Go to taco bell or Dan River restaurant instead. This place is way over priced. You can call and get pricing or go online and look at menu or even look at the dine in menu and when you check out the price will meticulously go up. they give extremely tiny portions too. just ordered take out for the last time. paid 20 dollars for not even enough food for a toddler. trust me do not do it. oh and soft drinks are apparently 2 dollars a cup. If you dine in and are white then good luck because they are also prejudiced mexicans and they treat their server girls like trash. and yes i am hispanic. read more
