Shrimp & bacon dish! YUM!!
Rachel H.

A friend recommended this spot since we were visiting this area for a quick day trip for tattoos. It was DELICIOUS! They did have drink specials too. My margarita was a little on the weak side, but for $2.50 there were no complaints. My only problem was that I forgot my to go box!

Chicken Fahitas

Ate here for lunch on Sunday and definitely not what I expected. This location has been here for many years so I assumed it must be good. They were not busy but it took 30 minutes to get my son's tacos. My chicken fajitas came when he was done eating. Both of our meals were extremely hot and extremely burned. My meal came with beans and lettuce which appeared as I was boxing up my food. I literally took 1 bite and asked for a to go box. I just can't eat burnt chicken. The waiter was very nice and apologized which is the reason for 2 stars instead of 1.

32 ounces of deliciousness and a 12 ounce Margarita

I had planned on visiting sooner however Covid and schedule has prevented it. My previous review was based on a terrible experience where most folks around us were sending food back. The most recent visit gave me faith that restaurant owners do pay attention. WOW, what a impressive improvement. The salsa was one of the best I've tasted, street tacos and the burritos were delicious. Most important, service....our waiter was very attentive and paid attention to every detail. If you haven't visited San Marcos lately, it's time for another try. Oh, and get the BIG beer.

I'm hooked on the Pollo Feliz (which I generally can't remember the name of and just call Merry Chicken, which the waiters tend to understand).

My wife and I live in Greensboro and we're headed up to Madison to see somebody and decided to get lunch. As soon as we walked into the restaurant I felt like I had gone back in time to maybe 2003. Where else anywhere in this country in the last 10 years have you seen a lunch special on a Saturday for $4.99? I had a fried chimichanga that was covered in cheese sauce came with a very fresh side of lettuce and guacamole and sour cream and tomatoes and refried beans and my wife had the speedy fresh basket of chips with fresh salsa and with tip because we gave about a 30% tip our bill was like $16. And if you look at the pictures I posted I could have gotten a 22 oz draft beer for $279. Now maybe it was a Coors light maybe it was a Miller lite but regardless when is the last time you've paid less than $6 for a beer at a restaurant? And 6.99 for a jumbo margarita? And the house margarita I believe was only like four something. I feel like this place is a solid 4 and 1/2 stars and I wish we could review it that way but it's not the best Mexican I've ever had but I will say the food was very good it was very fresh it was hot and the wait staff was exceptional. To the point that living in Greensboro I would definitely drive to Madison to go eat Mexican here because the food is good and the prices are ridiculous.

True to its namesake, there are brightly colored folk art designs throughout the restaurant in line with their Mexican heritage. The trees that make it look overgrown from the outside actually serve to allow sunlight while masking the surrounding city, facilitating the transformation that makes you feel like you're in Mexico City. We came at an off-peak time in the afternoon and it was nearly empty. We were seated immediately and the service was prompt and attentive. I was pleased to see some unique menu offerings like Birra Ramen and Sopes that deviate from the standard American-friendly fare in most places. Drinks were good - we had a regular house margarita, a triple berry margarita, and a jalapeño cucumber margarita. All were tasty and I would order again. I tried to order a Mezcalita, since it's not often I see a Mezcal option, but they were out of that particular liquor. We tried to get street corn as an appetizer, which they were also out of. We got cheese and salsa with chips instead. The chips were hot and fresh, the salsa generous with the cilantro, and the cheese bold and warm. For entrees we had the Al Pastor Quesadilla and the Birra Ramen. The quesadilla was good, though the beans on the side were pretty bland. The ramen was a unique and very tasty option, and I was not able to finish such a generous portion. I think I'd leave the cheese out next time since it made some weird textures, but the flavor was great overall. Overall, there are some small things to improve (having menu items in stock, bland beans) and the prices were a bit high, but we had a great experience overall. I'm not often in the area, but I'll certainly eat here again if I am!

We were part of a larger party of couples, approximately 12-14 people in total. Space was reserved in advance on the covered patio which was ready early for the party and the staff was happy to seat us and get drinks started. Overall the restaurant was very clean as well as the restrooms. The reason for 3-stars is I rate Mexican restaurants on three main dishes which should always be outstanding; Al Pastor, Carnitas, and sizzling Fajitas. If there is a failure with any ONE of these menu items the highest rating I can give is 3-stars! For starters the salsa was bland no taste, no hint of cilantro or spice. Some previous reviews mentioned the chips were thin, I didn't find that to be the case during my visit. They were fresh and warm. The fajitas were great, probably some of the best we've had in years. They were well seasoned and the steak & chicken was very tender. The veggies still had some crunch and weren't overcooked. However, there was no guacamole and a small squirt of sour cream. The rice didn't have any flavor on it, no salt..nothing!, But the beans were nicely seasoned and we were glad the beans didn't have cheese on them. However, we had to request the flour tortillas several times. The Carnitas were tender but had absolutely no flavor or seasoning whatsoever. They were just chunks of fried pork tips in grease, probably fried in vegetable oil not the traditional lard and obviously not with sour orange and seasonings. There wasn't a grilled jalapeño or even any pico de gallo on the side, they were very disappointing. We couldn't find Al Pastor anywhere on the menu. And speaking of the menu it was very large with way too many items. You can't possibly do all of these items justice. I recommend they scale the menu down and do a superb job on the customer "favorites" while offering seasonal items for a limited time.

The menu is not especially broad, about what you'd expect with this type of spot! I ordered the Pozole Rojo and 2 Chorizo Tacos. My order was quickly done, no more than 10 minutes. The tacos were not topped when I got them, the meat was in warm tortillas and the chopped onion, lime, and cilantro were in a separate area. I applied the toppings, added lime juice and some of several salsas completed the item. These are good tacos and there is plenty of chorizo in them. I would order tacos here again if in the area, but it is not a destination spot. The Pozole Rojo was not really good. It was greasy, under seasoned, and had a bitter after taste.
