    Delicious chicken noodle soup
    Lori B.

I didn't know Maria was the owner of the diner bc she was so playful with our children. She definitely takes pride in her place as it is kept very clean and she made my family and I feel right at home. With two very active kids (ages 1 and 2.5) it's tough to go out to eat. Maria not only made our lives easy but made us feel very welcome. Also, our son claims it's the best chicken noodle soup he's ever had

My cheddar jalapeno burger. Missing caramelized onions, jalapenos, cheddar, and chipotle mayo. Ordered without a bun.

Not a good experience. Food was bland and under-seasoned. Waitress seemed very inexperienced. I asked what the best thing on the menu was and she responded with "well the menu is so big" and came in to take a look at it like she had no idea what was in there. Waitress forgot to bring my water. The bread they brought to the table was half fresh, half stale and basically inedible. My children shared the kids meat loaf and it tasted like chef microwave was hard at work in the kitchen. My burger was missing cheese, chipotle mayo, jalapenos, and caramelized onions. My wife and I both ordered side salads with our burgers but were brought fries. Had to remind the waitress. She didn't ask how we wanted our burgers cooked. Didn't ask what kind of dressing we wanted after we reminded her about the salads. I found something hard and sharp in my food, not sure what it was because I swallowed it by accident. They also forgot to give us a pickle and coleslaw which the menu lists. Same thing happened to the ladies at the table behind us. Decor is fine. Place appears clean. Food is over priced. Our waitress brought the bill over and said she was only going to charge me $11 for my cheeseburger order that was completely wrong. I told her no and she went to talk to her boss and removed it from the bill. I don't think I'll ever go back here, definitely not for dinner.

Stuffed flounder with feta and spinach and home made mashed potatoes too.

Had the soup and half sandwich special. Both the soup and sandwich were delicious. Soup was home made and the Ruben sandwich was fresh.

Waited 25 minutes for someone to take our order before we walked out. Waived to the staff to get their attention only to be ignored.

It was literally the only place I could find on short notice with reservation slots available, which maybe should have been a sign (and certainly a reminder to me to be much more proactive about this sort of thing in the future). This was sort of a meet in the middle for us; she's in Redding, CT, and I'm in North Jersey. Common Grounds is located at the end of a strip mall, though arguably a higher-end one. The parking lot was VERY busy and while spots were relatively easy to find, I had to settle for one further away close to the bowling alley next door. All good though in that regard. The first hint that this was going to go downhill happened almost immediately. Despite having made the reservation for 11, our designated table wasn't available for seating because the prior party was "lingering." There wasn't a time limit on the dining parties so it seemed like Common Grounds just made assumptions on when people would leave, which is probably not an exact science on the best of days, and certainly not on a day where you might have a family reunion element. We were offered a large high-top table to sit at instead, which my mother isn't comfortable with, and after a few minutes of sitting there, were instructed to take a "normal" table by the window. I will give props for the hostess reading the room in that regard and doing what she could to give us an optimal seating situation - the wait and miscalculation wasn't her fault. She was also very nice to my mother, which for sure counts for something. It took probably 15 minutes for our waitress to come by and ask for drink/food orders, which isn't great. I'd decided on the Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes from the Specials menu, only to be told by the waitress that they were no longer available. I then had to quickly pivot to the French Toast from the regular menu, but lack of availability is something that should have been mentioned when we received the menus, not while we're ordering. And it wasn't even noon - a little concerning. I don't know if it was just a bad day behind the scenes, but it took over 45 minutes to get two pretty simple brunch entrees to us, and almost as much time to get our beverages. That would at least be understandable if the place was packed and everyone was busy, but that wasn't the case - a lot of tables emptied up within 20 minutes of our arrival, and in a pretty troubling optic, most of the front-end waitstaff was literally just standing around by the coffee station not doing anything. That's bad management, and could have helped alleviate whatever was happening in the kitchen. You have five minutes to kill? Okay, stop by your tables and apologize for the delay. Help bus and turn over the recently vacated tables. Maybe refill my water glass, which was empty for most of my meal. There's just no excuse for that. And it's a shame because my Cardamon Rose Latte was excellent, and the French Toast was very good as well. French Toast isn't one of my go-to's, but when I have it I prefer it to be softer and not as cumbersome, and this fit the bill. But because the wait time and overall service was mediocre at best, I didn't even want to go near a dessert menu or consider having a second latte - that probably would have tacked on another hour. So by virtue of not being attentive and efficient, Common Grounds left money on the table. A real shame; and frankly, surprising to me given that this has to be a very notable day on the calendar for brunch places. I'd ensure everything was well-oiled and ready to go, and it's clear it just wasn't. I overheard quite a few people outside singing the praises of this place, and I saw enough to probably understand why. But we weren't the beneficiary of most of those qualities.

The place was clean and tidy, I appreciated the historical photos of Peekskill around the dining area. They were cooked through and through. But it was still doughy; which tells me that how they mix their batter is the problem. I also got the Peekskill Diner Omelette. It was decent. 4 out of 5. About as good as any omelette from any surrounding diner. Unfortunately, the home fries were pretty mid. I wouldn't say they were undercooked because the potatoes were soft, but they were definitely not roasted long enough. I'm guessing they were boiled before roasted; which is fine, but they just need to roast them a lot longer because boiled potatoes absorb a ton of moisture and need the extra time roasting. Service was fine. Waiter was always on time. Water and coffee refills were on time. I would say 4.5/5 on service. Nothing wrong there. The manager was attentive, and looked like he was dedicated to making this Diner work. He's the only reason I'm giving this place a 4/5 and not a 3/5. I'm sure he'll be reading this review, and I'm sure he will work to make the food better. The actual restaurant itself is small. It feels a little cramped. Not as bad as the worst I've seen, but it does feel tight. I won't deduct any points for this because they're working with what they got. If they make the food better, they can go even tighter, and I won't complain. All in all, I think these guys are stretching themselves too thin. They wanna do the standard NY style Diner, but I think they'd be better off finding a niche. It's a small space. It doesn't need a menu that big. We need less variety and more quality in this area. All our diners in the area are mid. All of them. Westchester, 202, Mohegan, etc.... we don't need another mid diner. These guys will not last if they're gonna give us the same mediocre food we can get from bigger diners with more comfortable seating. At least the rest of them got better pancakes. If you're the manager and you're reading this, trust me when I say this. You may be busy now, but that will end. Start planning for a change. I recommend going down to City Limits Diner in White Plains to see what they're doing; if you really wanna stick to the NY style Diner vibes. Otherwise, find a niche. Find the thing that your head chef is passionate about, and let them make the best fking food in a 20 mile radius.

Immediately I went on the Yelp app to see the reviews and mostly all of them were positive except quite a few people complained about how long they waited for their food. Well, they were legitimate complaints. Me and my wife waited roughly 45 - 50 minutes for 2 egg platters. The part that upset me was the people that walked in after us and sat at the counter were served before us. Basically the cook (owner) served his normal customers first. If it wasn't for the long wait time I would've easily scored Bob's 5 stars but 45 - 50 minutes for eggs will deter me from going back.

The view as you can see from the photo is lovely, and you can see the commuter rail when it occasionally comes through. There is also a police station next door so you get a Birds Eye view when officers are getting off shift. Pancakes here are so good. I'd say 98% of breakfast places have pancakes that disappoint but not these. Since I wasn't sure, I let the kids order them instead since they will eat anything as long as there is maple syrup on it. We ordered them a short stack of blueberry pancakes to share and added on real maple syrup. They were golden and not too thick or heavy. They had to pay the "mom tax" of sharing some with me. My husband ordered eggs, home fries and bacon and the bacon was also perfectly done- something else that we don't often find. This place is charming, there was what sounded like some 80s post-punk playing softly, our server was charming (French accented too perhaps?) and we hope to be back some day!
