We visited Hidalgo this week. Probably our tenth visit since they opened. If you like authentic Mexican food (not Tex-Mex), this is the place, in Media, for you. The food which, is cooked to order, is excellent and fresh. Make sure to ask about the specials. It's a family owned/chef owned restaurant run by Enrique (chef), Soledad and their two daughters. You are treated like you are part of the family. It is a BYOB so, you can bring wine, beer and tequila (they will provide the Margarita mix). Give Hidalgo a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

This place was amazing. We got there at 5:30 pm, we had theater tickets at 7 pm. There was a group of probably 25 that were sitting when we got there and a few other tables of people. We know that everything is cooked fresh so with the giant table we thought of leaving not wanting to get to the theater late the server said you'll have time. We ordered. Then music starts blasting (we were under the speaker) then the owner (I think) sang some beautiful authentic Mexican songs! She was amazing. Insider note: ask her to sing you a song you will not be disappointed! Food came out hot and amazing! The homemade salsa was excellent as well. Our table had tacos, enchiladas, massive steak burrito which was amazing. Our server was attentive. All in all Pretty great. And we made the theater with 10 min to spare! Fantastic food (probably the most authentic Mexican food in the Philadelphia/Delco area) and the staff is wonderfully nice. It's a family run restaurant and everything's made to order so come knowing this won't be a quick sit down but a great experience with (hopefully) some surprise singing! A friend and I went to Dining Under the Stars in Media last night. It was a gorgeous evening and we brought tequila and wine. Our waitress was delightful and there is little more sincere than the beautiful songs she sang (She was kind enough to sing a second one later in the night when we requested). Dinner was good and plentiful and we both went home with leftovers. I'm looking forward to visiting again and trying other things. I will admit I had a previous poor experience when they were at their Springfield location, but I'm glad I gave them another shot. It was like night and day. read more

After a positive prior experience, my husband and I were really excited to return to Hildago tonight for a late Friday dinner. We drove 23 miles roundtrip and wasted over 1 1/2 hours of our night for them to work really hard to do absolutely nothing, serve us nothing, explain nothing, and make no apology. If you don't read on, just head to Taqueria La Michoacana in Norristown for a MUCH better experience! There was a term used in Delco when I was growing up, "ig'nant" i.e. "ignorant" as in when someone behaves in a foolishly rude way that is counter-productive to their own goals. Tonight Hildago was totally, toally ig'nant! Shortly after we left home, my husband called to order takeout at 8:15pm, well after the dinner rush, but still plenty of time before the kitchen closed. We gave the 3-course order, and the young woman took hub's name and number. She said it would be 30-35 mins. That is just about as long as it takes for us to get there, so it worked fine. We arrived at 8:50pm, on the longer end of their time estimate. My husband went in, gave his name for our order and they acted like they remembered exactly who he was, and the food would be ready in a minute. When we arrived, there were 4 occupied 2-top or 3-top tables in the restaurant (all parties were at the end of their meals, mostly just talking and sipping a drink, no longer eating anything). Considering that they had about 12 tables in the whole place, even if they had been slammed the minute we called them (by people who magically order, eat, drink, pay, and leave, in less than 35mins) there still would have been time to get our order mostly done by any 2-man kitchen staff (who we saw in the visible kitchen). But somehow that never happened. My husband sat waiting for 10 minutes ON TOP OF the 35 minutes we'd already been waiting for the order. No one came over to explain the delay or apologize. He was ignored. The 2-man kitchen staff looked busy, but we're not sure what they were busy with because none of the tables were awaiting food, and our order did not even appear to be in progress (they put the takeout together on the counter visible to everyone in this small establishment, and NOTHING was there). The Senora of the house attended the 4 tables, which became only 3 tables shortly after we got there, after a couple paid and left. She was basically putting things in take-home containers, and giving people their bill. After 15 minutes of being ignored, my husband thought he heard the kitchen mention they needed to START our order. This was all he could gather since he was not being tended to at all. No apology nor explanation as to where our $50 takeout order was the whole time. Finally it became clear to us that they had not made the order, and were not going to. It was bizarre. If they don't want to do takeout they should have made that clear on the phone before we spent an hour and a half of our time, and wasted gas on a 23-mile trip just to get their food. Had something happened after they took our order, they had our number to CALL us to explain. Yet even when we got there, they IGNORED us after the initial "oh, you're here for that takeout..." and let us sit for 15 more minutes (a total of a 50-min wait) for NOTHING. We just finally left... with nothing. They didn't care. It was an amazingly disturbing and disgusting experience. Who does that? Thugs? After we left, my husband thought they would call to apologize. Nope! Nothing. I knew better. They were ig'nant. I understand a "manana" attitude, but this was way beyond being laid back, or even lazy about things; this was downright malignant. If they were (or had been) packed, I could certainly forgive a 5-10 minute delay once we got there, provided someone smiled at us & apologized for it. But to ignore people when you're 1/3 full, & promise a food order wasting 50 minutes of someone's time for nothing? Plus waste their time/mileage to drive home empty-handed? Really? Totally hateful attitude, not to mention disgracefully unprofessional. "Wow!" is all I can say. This encounter was just amazing; a piece of work! They effectively drove us away... with nothing. We went home, and then headed to Taqueria La Michoacana in Norristown. Food was delicioso and ready exactly when promised. People were friendly, made eye-contact, and we were greeted by both the hostess and the bartender who got right to our food and gave it to us nice and hot. Not sure what the heck happened with Hildago tonight, but they made it clear they did not want our business (after a 4-star Yelp review). They worked really hard to earn 1 star tonight. You're welcome, Hildago, for my prior review. Since you have no website, I took a lot of time to photograph your menu & add 7 close-up photos of it to Yelp to help you gain business. After a year at its new location, Hidalgo has garnered the well deserved reputation as the only genuine, really true Mexican restaurant in the DelCo suburbs. Not a chain, but a true Mom and Pop serving a little bit of Mexico in El Norte. By the way... other than fajitas, a truly Tex Mex dish, the faire is Mexican, not Texan, which is worth mentioning, as many Northerners are used to referring to Tex Mex as Mexican, which it is not the case. The spices and picante are those of Mexico City, not Texas. If you want to burn your mouth off, ask for it, because otherwise you won't get it. The owner, Soledad, hails from DF - for gringos that means the Distrito Federal, equivalent to the US's District of Columbia, only ten times the size and with 9 million people. She is also an accomplished Ranchera and Corrido singer and delights in taking her breaks, popping up the music, and delighting the audience with her monumental voice. Her excellent Capitalino Spanish is quite different from the Sonoran dialect, and she's great to platicar, a relaxed, efficient, courteous and amicable storekeeper. We went there on the víspera (eve) of the Cinco de Mayo, knowing that on this day we would be sure to get a table instead of having to wait hours for a seat on the Cinco. We brought over our Tequila (BYO) and sat down to the aroma of mole and tomato sauces, and the sound of the cleaver mincing meat inside the kitchen in preparation for the next day's festivities. The owner greeted us and we engaged in an active conversation in Spanish about my time living in Mexico and how much it has changed since. She took our bottle and after a little break, she brought over two gigantic goblets of delicious Margaritas. We started our faire with the usual - but here it's home made, salsa dish and fresh guacamole that came in its molcajete dish, along with house made chips. We devoured these quickly just as the main dishes were being served. My spouse had a delicious plate of enchiladas which I ended up finishing up, it was so good. I had their succulent chicken fajitas. Yum.... Double Yum.... The frijoles refritos were indeed made on the premises, not from a No. 10 can. And the seasonings were truly genuine. After the plates were retired, we looked at dessert offerings. My other half had the Tres Leches, which I can't even look at as I am lactose intolerant. I had a wonderful flan which suit the stomach. This was a truly memorable evening. Definite a jewel in the suburban sprawl and one of the only authentic restaurants in the plethora of mediocre chain eateries. Come early and often. read more

I really want to give this place more stars, but the experience my friend and I had was just weird. Nothing was horrible, nothing was amazing, it was just weird. 1. Service was okay. The waitress was somewhere between kind of attentive and nowhere. Not a huge deal, definitely have had worse service. 2. The chips and salsa were AMAZING. So delicious and 100% the best the stuff we ate there. However, and this is maybe one of the things that has left the worst taste in my mouth (figuratively because I'm still dreaming about that salsa) is that my friend and I were charged $10 for chips and salsa and $5 for a salsa refill. I read the reviews... why wasn't this complimentary for us? It's not like we ONLY got chips and salsa. And also.. why didn't someone say "hey will cost you" - again, maybe I was wrong to assume that chips and salsa were free but they are free EVERYWHERE ELSE. 3. the queso is not normal queso like what you would expect at a Mexican restaurant. Hot and melty and addictive. This was like... string cheese in a bowl that hadn't been fried. Like someone took all the string cheese out of mozzarella sticks and put it in a bowl. And then they give you warm tortillas to eat it with. What??? It was so weird. And honestly not even that delicious. It was better when we put some salsa on it. 4. The rest of the food we got was okay. Once you put salsa on it, it was amazing. But that's probably just cause the salsa is amazing. 5. There's a credit card minimum of $25. Wtf??? Finally popped into Hidalgo's the other night and it was excellent. Very authentic Mexican food-- no globs of sour cream plopped on everything. Solid guacamole, excellent ceviche and salsa, and then we split a pork special. I have no idea what was in it but it tasted great, the portion was huge, and the rice and black beans were good, too. Visited Hidalgo's on a Wednesday night for dining under the stars - had a reservation and waited 1/2 hour before we were acknowledged. Only two waitresses for a busy night with tables indoors and outdoors. Service was poor given the above circumstances they did their best. Food was very good, however that took a long time as well. Went there a few months ago, not a bad place. You get tortilla chips and salsa once you've been seated. The salsa isn't bad at all. Got the sope's and chile relleno's plate. The food was decent. Although, I feel the price for these foods wasn't justifiable. Portions aren't an issue cause they'll give you a decent amount if you order one of those plates. Expensive drinks for dirt cheap Jarritos. Would probably go here again if there was a friend and there was an urge to eat Mexican locally. Besides that, I'll stick to the Philly area or Norristown if I really crave good authentic Mexican food. read more

I have been here a few times and also at their old location. Love there food, real mexican . Owned by a women and her family. Her daughters are usually her waiters. She is a nice lady who always caters to what you want. You get free chips and salsa and if you ask she will even sing for you :) Food is very good and you get such a portion it fills you up. If she mentions a cake she has for dessert , it's delicious and she makes it herself. I'm not a black bean fan but everytime I go here I eat it, very good. If you want to try mexican food from a family who takes pride in what they do , then this is the place for you. Skip Taco Bell and enjoy a real meal. The cost for a dish is around $13.95. read more

Picked up our dinner an hour ago - Sopa Azteca, Nopalas (prickly pear) salad, Huachninango a la Veracruzana, and Huachninango al Mojo de Aio. It was all very good. The soup is best when the tortilla chips are crunchy - which they weren't by the time I got home even though they made the soup at the very last to try to keep them crunchy ... maybe ask them to keep the chip on the side and you put them in when you get home. The salad was really tasty - a ton of different flavors and textures. Both Red Snapper entrees were excellent. The filets were nicely sized, cooked perfectly. The rice and veggies were flavorful. Too much food - we ate half and are quite full, so we've got a full dinner or huge lunch in the fridge. I hope this place survives the pandemic's economic impact. I'll order more and hope to sit down someday. read more

This is the same Hidalgo from Providence Ave. It has moved to Baltimore Pike near the Pizza Hut, Ihop and accross from Good Year Tires. Had dinner here on 11 Nov 2011 and at the time it was BYOB (not sure if it's still BYOB). Tiny place, but with a great spirit and good food. Just tried to eat here again for cinco de mayo. Have been excited all week. Called about a reservation but said it wasn't necessary and they don't take reservations for less than 5. Show up at 6:45 and are told they're all booked because a table of 32 made a reservation and is coming at 7 which takes up the whole restaurant. That could not be less fair. Just because we're a party of two we were unable to eat here. I will not be returning. So disappointing after a previous great experience. read more

This was an amazing experience. We were celebrating my son's birthday and Hildago's made made the night extra special. Despite people saying the food wasn't spicy enough, I asked Momma for more heat and she brought out homemade hot sauce which took great high quality food to excellence. We had over stuffed burritos while my son enjoyed an excellent shrimp dish When I let Momma know we were celebrating my son's birthday she said she would bring out his desser and sing. This place is not quite ready to be a restaurant. We arrived on Friday night and expected to wait. We were told it would be 30-45 minutes. An hour and twenty minutes later, the very confused hostess told us yet again that we were next - as soon as she could find seating for the party of six that was waiting for their (delayed) reservation. We finally left and told the hostess that her estimate was a bit off. Her response was "Oh, has it been that long??" I asked how she intended to make things right, and she replied "I'll give you a free margarita next time you come" - ironic, since the restaurant is BYOB. We ate elsewhere and had a great meal. If you want to try one of Media's great restaurants an hour and a half after you arrive downtown, then definitely start at Hidalgo's. read more

Mexican Places are growing in Media, between Dos Gringos, Diego's Cantina, and Ariano Cafe (Mondays Only), there are a lot of options. Hidalgo's throws down with their food into the ring and like a champion bullfighter, comes out on top as one of the best. My experience was better than average, and only a few minor misses prevented this from being a five star review. Atmosphere - Cozy is a good way to explain, but on a busy lunch/dinner rush, seating is very close together and has limited navigation lanes for servers to maneuver. Working with limited room however, Hidalgo's finds a way to decorate with traditional art and old photographs from Mexico and Mexican culture. Add to that a vibrant and lively dining experience with colorful servers, and the places coziness fades away into its charm. Waitstaff - Our waitress was extremely lively, and used traditional phrases and words in Spanish to convey her experience. Even someone like me who understands and speaks a little was able to get by with my Spanglish and make for a lively engagement. Her knowledge of the menu and bubbly personality really enhanced our visit. Food - The food we had was very good. I went with the Burro Ranchero for my entree which was fantastic! Pulled chicken with adobo sauce and cheese, in a warm flour tortilla stuffed with green onions and peppers, really had a lot of flavor and added to the authenticity of the food. My wife had the Chicken Quesadilla which was good and the flautas, which I was able to split and were also very warm and came with a great sauce. Her final order was some tostones, which had a crispy tortilla shell with a mix of beans, rice, and cheese on top. Overall, we were very impressed with the food and drinks (beverages come in a 22 oz glass, so prepare ahead of time). Intangibles - Off state street, Hidalgo's stands out with it's warm black awning and double doors to keep the cold out on a windy day. Add to that great location near the downtown parking garage and window watching if desired, and Hidalgo's can allow for good dining. One thing I would say is that if you have strollers/car seats, leave them in the car. Hidalgo's is VERY limited on foot space, and these items will take up too much space. Overall - Hidalgo's is a very solid addition to the Media dining scene, and allows for some great Mexican authenticity into a competitive market. Prepare ahead of time for the limited floor space, but this is one location who's tastes are bigger then its restaurant. read more

I was a fan when they were at their former location and have been looking forward to the new place. The pros: Food is quite good. Others have complained about price and yes, it will cost more than Chipotle, but it's a better meal, too. The owner is so friendly; she comes out every night to thank her patrons and sing Mexican love songs (OK, she's a bit pitchy at times but it's really charming.) Only complaint was service and, even then, only when it got busy. When we walked in, the place was 3/4 empty and there was no issue. It got crowded quickly, as it tends to do, and it was tough to get the check. You'd think they'd be anxious to turn the table. They could have used an extra waitress. P. And I finally tried Hildalgo's for the first time with another couple. We walked in without reservations, but the place wasn't very crowded so we were able to get a table for 4. However the table for 4 was really a table for 2 that they just added 2 more chairs to, making it really cramped. We were PITAs and asked to move to a better table which thankfully fit us a little better. For appetizers we got the ceviche and the guacamole. The guacamole was fine, but I had a big issue with the ceviche because it came out warm as if the fish had been cooked and then tossed with lime juice. Any time ive ever had a ceviche it was chilled and the fish was definitely not cooked. That's the whole point of Ceviche: that the fish is marinated it lime "cooking" it in the juices. I opted out of that appetizer. I tried the enchilada for my entree and it really lacked flavor so I ended up not eating much of it. Our sever did seem nice though and I appreciated that but as I didn't really enjoy the food, I don't think I'll be returning. read more

absolutely love this place. the staff are the kindest people you will ever meet. if you're lucky you'll get to hear some singing. the food is excellent. the seafood soup (can't remember the name of it) was out of this world. loaded with shrimp, scallops, muscles, octopus, calamari,all kinds of vegetables in a delicious broth. the red snapper dish (again can't remember the name) was cooked to perfection with an amazing garlic taste. it's byob, but skip the wine and bring some tequila.... they will make the margaritas for you. this place is an experience just as much as it is an authentic mexican restaurant read more

We went to Hildagos in February. We new it was BYO and brought some wine what we did not know is that if you bring some tequila, they will mix a drink for you. The food was great and was the most authentic we have tasted since our trip to Merida. Highly recommended. read more
