We recently ordered take out from Hidalgo for the first time- we were not disappointed!! I ordered the mole poblano, and it was incredible! Definitely the best mole I have ever had! The black beans were also delicious! The portions are huge and the quality is incredible! Can't wait to go back again soon! read more

The food was delicious! The service was wonderful and the singing was a pleasant surprise. We brought our own tequila and the margaritas really are brought back in a giant mug. I wasn't really ready to drink over four shots in one sitting but when we got our tequila bottle back it was half gone and the 2 of us only had 1 drink each. I just wished she had asked if we wanted all that. read more

This is my first time eating here and we had such a great experience! Obviously we had to do take-out because of the quarantine so I was a little nervous to try a new place in case the food didn't travel well. Needless to say, it was great even as take-out! We ordered the Queso Fundido as an app which I did have to reheat when I got home just because the cheese had solidified a bit but regardless, it was still delicious. I got the steak burrito which was huge and had very nice flavor. My boyfriend got the steak fajitas and thoroughly enjoyed everything as well. We can't wait to be able to try the actual restaurant when the quarantine is lifted! We'll definitely be going back soon! P.S. They drew a burro on my to-go box, very nice touch read more

Limited menu, the food was okay but on our second visit we were the ONLY ones in the entire restaurant and they sat us at a broken table. The glass top was literally split in half. That table should be removed it's dangerous! It was sharp on the edges and I almost accidentally slid it off the table. We left without ordering because the juices we got tasted awful. Wasn't thrilled the first time but gave it another shot. Never again! read more

Hidalgo's was delicious, totally authentic and a really welcoming place. I felt a little unsure when we arrived around 7 on a Friday since no one else was there, but it quickly filled up. The restaurant is small and decorated simply, and the staff are really friendly and warm. Our server was Soledad and she was absolutely awesome, and a great singer! The restaurant is a BYOB, and they make an awesome margarita if you bring tequila. The margaritas are huge and served in a really cool mug. We ordered a ton of food, for appetizers we had guacamole, queso fresco and flautas. The guacamole was the best I've ever had-- totally fresh, chunky and flavorful. The queso fresco was really rich and stringy, it was delicious with soft tortillas (and very filling). On the menu, the flautas were described as 3 taquitos, but the 3 were cut in half and enough for the 6 of us to all try some. For dinner I had traditional chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce. They were served with black beans and rice and were delicious. My family ordered fajitas, salmon and a fish special. Everybody enjoyed their meals, though my brother did say that his fajitas weren't super hot. Hidalgo's is a great option for authentic Mexican, and I will definitely be back. read more

Absolutely fantastic and authentic food. The waitress was great, we were the only table until about 5pm. Started with the queso fundido with warm tortillas. Perfect amount of melt and saltiness. Entrees were cochinita pibil and a steak dish that I cannot remember the name of (sorry!). Both were fantastic. Will be back. read more

My brother recommended this place to my family so we decided to try it out for Dining Under the Stars after dropping off our election ballots. Loved the experience!! Our table ordered the margs (strawberry, mango and classic lemon lime). All were delicious and came in the cutest jugs!! It is BYOB, so remember to bring your own T (tequila). We then had the nachos with chorizo and the guacamole. The guacamole was the freshest, most delicious guac I've ever had in my life. The nachos were also amazing! Our table then ordered our entrees which included the Burro Ranchero with chicken, fajitas with steak, and more. I personally had the burro ranchero with chicken. It was so delicious and I was sad I was so full that I couldn't even eat half of it. Definitely will last at least two meals. Everyone else at the table was very happy with their meals as well. So overall, great meal. But what really puts this place over the top is the service and experience of dining there. The woman who owns the restaurant (with her family) served us and she was so warm, caring and funny!! She chatted with us throughout the meal and really connected with us which you rarely get these days when dining. At the end of our meal, she serenaded us with a beautiful song. She has an amazing voice! It was an unforgettable experience and I will recommend this place to everyone forever! Please go and enjoy this amazing dining experience. read more

I generally don't like Mexican food because it's never done right BUT this place crushes it!!!! It was absolutely delicious. I'm half Mexican and grew up going to my tias houses. This taste just like they use to make it! I can't rave enough. I tried the ceviche and traditional chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The ceviche is a perfect mix of flavors and chunks of fish. The enchiladas were melting in your mouth! The serving size was also perfect. I did take out and everything felt like a home cooked meal. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

Could not have enjoyed our food more! We got the ceviche, which came with large chunks of tasty fish over a generous portion of pico de gallo. Then had the Pollo Hidalgo and the Chicken Enchiladas with green sauce, both of which tasted like they were straight out of our tia's kitchen. Even the beans were perfectly done. This place isn't flashy or trying to distract you with trendy ingredients. If you want delicious classic homemade Mexican food, served by kind people in a charming atmosphere, don't look any further. Best Mexican food in Media, hands down. read more

This place was decent but I wouldn't rave about it. El Limon is still the best, most authentic Mexican food I've had locally. They beat Hidalgo's in every area...tomatillo sauce...nachos...enchiladas...burrito...dessert. We came on a Saturday night. I was expecting a long wait based on reviews but we were actually seated within 8 minutes. The place is pretty small and there's nowhere to wait inside so you are kind of standing on top of the tables that are seated or if you are seated...people are standing on top of you. The tables are also very close together. We were in the worst seat in the house...right by the door...but we saw there were no other options so we just stayed there. The window seats look the nicest! There are some tables in the front of the restaurant and a very small back seating area which is much hotter. The female owner did come out and serenade us in Spanish. She was very loud. She really enjoyed doing it and most people seemed to love it, including my man. I personally find being serenaded awkward and she was very loud and pushed me into full blown headache from my slight headache. She wasn't bad...just loud. It was nice that she thanked everyone for spending the night with them. It's my understanding that her husband is the chef and her daughters are the waitresses. There are a lot of regulars that all really seem to love it here. It's a BYOB/BYOtequila. They have the ingredients to make margaritas if you bring your own tequila. They do not have fountain soda, only cans. My man got a can of sprite and he said it tasted weird. I stuck with water because I don't like canned soda. Appetizers - nachos and guacamole. The guacamole was delicious. It was served with chips which were also crispy and delicious. The nachos could be served with ground beef or chorizo. We did them without meat. They were pretty uninspired...just chips with cheese and some beans. We were glad we also ordered guac because it spiced them up a little more. Entrees- cheese enchiladas and steak burrito. My man said the steak in the burrito was the best he's had in one, however, the burrito as a whole was not the best he's had. El Limon is definitely better. The hot sauce served on the side of it was verrrrrry hot! The cheese enchiladas were decent. Not as much cheese...kinda limp looking and the tomatillo sauce was ok but again, nowhere near as flavorful as El Limon. The rice and beans were also ok. Dessert - dulce de Leche cake was the special and she was really pushing it but I don't like milk...or cake...so it's definitely not my thing. We were deciding between the banana dessert and another dessert which sounded like a variation of churros...fried fritters with cinnamon and sugar, served with vanilla ice cream. She recommended this over the bananas so I went with her recommendation...bad decision! This dessert was also uninspired. It was seriously just chips with cinnamon and sugar and vanilla ice cream in the middle. The description made it sound much more exciting. We wished we got the bananas. Oh well. Service - after singing, the owner came over to us to take our order. She was very nice and provided excellent customer service. Her daughters were iffy. The one didn't crack a smile the entire time and looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there. The other one was nice. Service was pretty slow which I anticipated based on reviews but that was fine because we were there to enjoy our night with each other, not to rush. I asked for extra tomatillo sauce and I thought she forgot. By the time it came out I was almost finished my enchiladas. They are not on open table which is a drawback for me. They are not open for lunch. They are closed on Mondays. I found it very difficult to find a menu online. Their only website seems to be their Facebook page. There is plenty of parking around the area. They do participate in dining under the stars. Prices are high for what is being served...in my opinion. We would probably give them another chance but definitely won't be rushing back. I'm sure this doesn't come as a surprise but I would definitely go to El Limon before returning here. Lol. Give them a shot and decide for yourself! read more

I will not be going to any other Mexican restaurant now that I've been to Hidalgo's! The food was fantastic, and the margarita mix was delicious. It's BYOB, so bring your own tequila! We visited Hidalgo this week. Probably our tenth visit since they opened. If you like authentic Mexican food (not Tex-Mex), this is the place, in Media, for you. The food which, is cooked to order, is excellent and fresh. Make sure to ask about the specials. It's a family owned/chef owned restaurant run by Enrique (chef), Soledad and their two daughters. You are treated like you are part of the family. It is a BYOB so, you can bring wine, beer and tequila (they will provide the Margarita mix). Give Hidalgo a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

After a positive prior experience, my husband and I were really excited to return to Hildago tonight for a late Friday dinner. We drove 23 miles roundtrip and wasted over 1 1/2 hours of our night for them to work really hard to do absolutely nothing, serve us nothing, explain nothing, and make no apology. If you don't read on, just head to Taqueria La Michoacana in Norristown for a MUCH better experience! There was a term used in Delco when I was growing up, "ig'nant" i.e. "ignorant" as in when someone behaves in a foolishly rude way that is counter-productive to their own goals. Tonight Hildago was totally, toally ig'nant! Shortly after we left home, my husband called to order takeout at 8:15pm, well after the dinner rush, but still plenty of time before the kitchen closed. We gave the 3-course order, and the young woman took hub's name and number. She said it would be 30-35 mins. That is just about as long as it takes for us to get there, so it worked fine. We arrived at 8:50pm, on the longer end of their time estimate. My husband went in, gave his name for our order and they acted like they remembered exactly who he was, and the food would be ready in a minute. When we arrived, there were 4 occupied 2-top or 3-top tables in the restaurant (all parties were at the end of their meals, mostly just talking and sipping a drink, no longer eating anything). Considering that they had about 12 tables in the whole place, even if they had been slammed the minute we called them (by people who magically order, eat, drink, pay, and leave, in less than 35mins) there still would have been time to get our order mostly done by any 2-man kitchen staff (who we saw in the visible kitchen). But somehow that never happened. My husband sat waiting for 10 minutes ON TOP OF the 35 minutes we'd already been waiting for the order. No one came over to explain the delay or apologize. He was ignored. The 2-man kitchen staff looked busy, but we're not sure what they were busy with because none of the tables were awaiting food, and our order did not even appear to be in progress (they put the takeout together on the counter visible to everyone in this small establishment, and NOTHING was there). The Senora of the house attended the 4 tables, which became only 3 tables shortly after we got there, after a couple paid and left. She was basically putting things in take-home containers, and giving people their bill. After 15 minutes of being ignored, my husband thought he heard the kitchen mention they needed to START our order. This was all he could gather since he was not being tended to at all. No apology nor explanation as to where our $50 takeout order was the whole time. Finally it became clear to us that they had not made the order, and were not going to. It was bizarre. If they don't want to do takeout they should have made that clear on the phone before we spent an hour and a half of our time, and wasted gas on a 23-mile trip just to get their food. Had something happened after they took our order, they had our number to CALL us to explain. Yet even when we got there, they IGNORED us after the initial "oh, you're here for that takeout..." and let us sit for 15 more minutes (a total of a 50-min wait) for NOTHING. We just finally left... with nothing. They didn't care. It was an amazingly disturbing and disgusting experience. Who does that? Thugs? After we left, my husband thought they would call to apologize. Nope! Nothing. I knew better. They were ig'nant. I understand a "manana" attitude, but this was way beyond being laid back, or even lazy about things; this was downright malignant. If they were (or had been) packed, I could certainly forgive a 5-10 minute delay once we got there, provided someone smiled at us & apologized for it. But to ignore people when you're 1/3 full, & promise a food order wasting 50 minutes of someone's time for nothing? Plus waste their time/mileage to drive home empty-handed? Really? Totally hateful attitude, not to mention disgracefully unprofessional. "Wow!" is all I can say. This encounter was just amazing; a piece of work! They effectively drove us away... with nothing. We went home, and then headed to Taqueria La Michoacana in Norristown. Food was delicioso and ready exactly when promised. People were friendly, made eye-contact, and we were greeted by both the hostess and the bartender who got right to our food and gave it to us nice and hot. Not sure what the heck happened with Hildago tonight, but they made it clear they did not want our business (after a 4-star Yelp review). They worked really hard to earn 1 star tonight. You're welcome, Hildago, for my prior review. Since you have no website, I took a lot of time to photograph your menu & add 7 close-up photos of it to Yelp to help you gain business. I took those down, since I no longer feel right about encouraging anyone else to go through what we did tonight. You can post your own menu, or do nothing, you're good at it. read more

After a year at its new location, Hidalgo has garnered the well deserved reputation as the only genuine, really true Mexican restaurant in the DelCo suburbs. Not a chain, but a true Mom and Pop serving a little bit of Mexico in El Norte. By the way... other than fajitas, a truly Tex Mex dish, the faire is Mexican, not Texan, which is worth mentioning, as many Northerners are used to referring to Tex Mex as Mexican, which it is not the case. The spices and picante are those of Mexico City, not Texas. If you want to burn your mouth off, ask for it, because otherwise you won't get it. The owner, Soledad, hails from DF - for gringos that means the Distrito Federal, equivalent to the US's District of Columbia, only ten times the size and with 9 million people. She is also an accomplished Ranchera and Corrido singer and delights in taking her breaks, popping up the music, and delighting the audience with her monumental voice. Her excellent Capitalino Spanish is quite different from the Sonoran dialect, and she's great to platicar, a relaxed, efficient, courteous and amicable storekeeper. We went there on the víspera (eve) of the Cinco de Mayo, knowing that on this day we would be sure to get a table instead of having to wait hours for a seat on the Cinco. We brought over our Tequila (BYO) and sat down to the aroma of mole and tomato sauces, and the sound of the cleaver mincing meat inside the kitchen in preparation for the next day's festivities. The owner greeted us and we engaged in an active conversation in Spanish about my time living in Mexico and how much it has changed since. She took our bottle and after a little break, she brought over two gigantic goblets of delicious Margaritas. We started our faire with the usual - but here it's home made, salsa dish and fresh guacamole that came in its molcajete dish, along with house made chips. We devoured these quickly just as the main dishes were being served. My spouse had a delicious plate of enchiladas which I ended up finishing up, it was so good. I had their succulent chicken fajitas. Yum.... Double Yum.... The frijoles refritos were indeed made on the premises, not from a No. 10 can. And the seasonings were truly genuine. After the plates were retired, we looked at dessert offerings. My other half had the Tres Leches, which I can't even look at as I am lactose intolerant. I had a wonderful flan which suit the stomach. This was a truly memorable evening. Definite a jewel in the suburban sprawl and one of the only authentic restaurants in the plethora of mediocre chain eateries. Come early and often. read more

Love the ambiance, the music and the food! It's really real Mexican food! What a treasure.‼

Delicious authentic Mexican food & musical entertainment by owner(singing traditional Mexican tunes)

This place was amazing. We got there at 5:30 pm, we had theater tickets at 7 pm. There was a group of probably 25 that were sitting when we got there and a few other tables of people. We know that everything is cooked fresh so with the giant table we thought of leaving not wanting to get to the theater late the server said you'll have time. We ordered. Then music starts blasting (we were under the speaker) then the owner (I think) sang some beautiful authentic Mexican songs! She was amazing. Insider note: ask her to sing you a song you will not be disappointed! Food came out hot and amazing! The homemade salsa was excellent as well. Our table had tacos, enchiladas, massive steak burrito which was amazing. Our server was attentive. All in all Pretty great. And we made the theater with 10 min to spare! Thank you Hidalgo's we will see you again soon! read more

A friend and I went to Dining Under the Stars in Media last night. It was a gorgeous evening and we brought tequila and wine. Our waitress was delightful and there is little more sincere than the beautiful songs she sang (She was kind enough to sing a second one later in the night when we requested). Dinner was good and plentiful and we both went home with leftovers. I'm looking forward to visiting again and trying other things. I will admit I had a previous poor experience when they were at their Springfield location, but I'm glad I gave them another shot. It was like night and day. read more

Went there a few months ago, not a bad place. You get tortilla chips and salsa once you've been seated. The salsa isn't bad at all. Got the sope's and chile relleno's plate. The food was decent. Although, I feel the price for these foods wasn't justifiable. Portions aren't an issue cause they'll give you a decent amount if you order one of those plates. Expensive drinks for dirt cheap Jarritos. Would probably go here again if there was a friend and there was an urge to eat Mexican locally. Besides that, I'll stick to the Philly area or Norristown if I really crave good authentic Mexican food. read more

I really want to give this place more stars, but the experience my friend and I had was just weird. Nothing was horrible, nothing was amazing, it was just weird. 1. Service was okay. The waitress was somewhere between kind of attentive and nowhere. Not a huge deal, definitely have had worse service. 2. The chips and salsa were AMAZING. So delicious and 100% the best the stuff we ate there. However, and this is maybe one of the things that has left the worst taste in my mouth (figuratively because I'm still dreaming about that salsa) is that my friend and I were charged $10 for chips and salsa and $5 for a salsa refill. I read the reviews... why wasn't this complimentary for us? It's not like we ONLY got chips and salsa. And also.. why didn't someone say "hey will cost you" - again, maybe I was wrong to assume that chips and salsa were free but they are free EVERYWHERE ELSE. 3. the queso is not normal queso like what you would expect at a Mexican restaurant. Hot and melty and addictive. This was like... string cheese in a bowl that hadn't been fried. Like someone took all the string cheese out of mozzarella sticks and put it in a bowl. And then they give you warm tortillas to eat it with. What??? It was so weird. And honestly not even that delicious. It was better when we put some salsa on it. 4. The rest of the food we got was okay. Once you put salsa on it, it was amazing. But that's probably just cause the salsa is amazing. 5. There's a credit card minimum of $25. Wtf??? Idk, overall it was just a WEIRD experience. Not sure if I'd go back. Maybe if there was free chips and salsa involved. read more

I have been here a few times and also at their old location. Love there food, real mexican . Owned by a women and her family. Her daughters are usually her waiters. She is a nice lady who always caters to what you want. You get free chips and salsa and if you ask she will even sing for you :) Food is very good and you get such a portion it fills you up. If she mentions a cake she has for dessert , it's delicious and she makes it herself. I'm not a black bean fan but everytime I go here I eat it, very good. If you want to try mexican food from a family who takes pride in what they do , then this is the place for you. Skip Taco Bell and enjoy a real meal. The cost for a dish is around $13.95. read more

Picked up our dinner an hour ago - Sopa Azteca, Nopalas (prickly pear) salad, Huachninango a la Veracruzana, and Huachninango al Mojo de Aio. It was all very good. The soup is best when the tortilla chips are crunchy - which they weren't by the time I got home even though they made the soup at the very last to try to keep them crunchy ... maybe ask them to keep the chip on the side and you put them in when you get home. The salad was really tasty - a ton of different flavors and textures. Both Red Snapper entrees were excellent. The filets were nicely sized, cooked perfectly. The rice and veggies were flavorful. Too much food - we ate half and are quite full, so we've got a full dinner or huge lunch in the fridge. I hope this place survives the pandemic's economic impact.
