We brought our own tequila and the owner mixed us some GREAT margaritas, and they were huge and served in really cool... jugs? Mugs?? Mini pitchers?? Very cool and tasty. We got the guacamole which was bright and flavorful. Their mole enchiladas were rich with complex spices mingling after every bite. Very fresh, full-flavored food. But best of all was the warm atmosphere: patrons knew the owner, chatted and hugged, we felt super welcome on our first visit, and the owner even sang for the us all which was AMAZING! Caught me off guard, but she's really good! Made for a special evening at a once-of-a-kind place. We came here for Dining Under the Stars. They only had two staff waiting tables, so they were quite behind. The ceviche was the best appetizer that we got . The queso with chorizo was very chewy and not like a dip. You had to use a knife to get it to be bite size. The owner was impressive in that she gave three live singing performances in Spanish. Went on a Thursday night with my mom and wife, the owner greeted and seated us. She was a delightful woman and walked us through the menu. We had delicious ceviche, pico and queso to start which were all outstanding. For our mains I had the puntas xochimilco which was wonderful beef tips in stew, great with tortillas! My wife and mother had the chicken enchiladas which both very much enjoyed. For desert we had the tres leches which the owner told us she made every day fresh. This is the best Mexican restaurant in pa. I am Mexican and I am very picky about the Mexican food I eat. Hidalgo is the most authentic for both its food and its atmosphere. The owner is also the hostess and actually performs mariachi music for us after each meal. They have a steak taco platter as an appetizer that costs $7 and is practically a meal on itself. This is the best Mexican food in the area. Authentic, properly prepared, and uniformly wonderful. We have tried many of the options and have never been disappointed. The one issue is the service. It is a family owned and run establishment and sometimes the wait for anything and everything is too much. And that's a shame. It does really distract from the experience. Limited menu, the food was okay but on our second visit we were the ONLY ones in the entire restaurant and they sat us at a broken table. The glass top was literally split in half. Yelp strikes again and finds this wonderful Mexican gem for the lovely wife and me! It's just slightly off the beaten track in Clifton Heights. It will take you less than a minute from the Home Depot. It doesn't look like much from the outside but trust me and stop in. The atmosphere is vibrant and delightful (see my pic). It feels like a fine dining restaurant but is still very casual. There is no need to dress up. Speaking of need, you do need to stop at a Wine & Spirits store because these folks are BYOT (Tequila). Solidad (the owner) will mix you a huge potent margarita in a stunning glass. Check out my picture of the lovely wife with hers. So Solidad runs the front of the house and may wait on you herself. On busy nights her daughters help out as wait staff. Her husband is the excellent chef so it's 100% family run. Expect courteous, knowledgeable service and a surprise near the end of your meal. If you're good, Solidad will sing for you and she is amazing! You'll receive chips and a very good salsa while you take your first sips of your margarita. Last night we shared SOPES for $4.95 as our appetizer. We received three fresh corn tortillas spread with refried beans and shredded chicken and topped with hot sauce, chopped onions, and fresh cheese. One bite and we both smiled with pleasure. The first thought that came to my mind was how fresh tasting they were. For my entree I chose CHILES RELLENOS for $15.95 and they were the best version I have ever enjoyed. We're talking Poblano peppers stuffed with picadilo, a savory ground beef mixture, and dipped in egg batter and lightly fried, covered with creamy tomato sauce. They were OMG delicious. The wife chose HUACHINAGO AL MOJO DE AJO for $16.95. This was something you don't see every day in a Mexican restaurant. It was red snapper filet sautéed in a garlic oil, lime juice and Worcestershire sauce and covered with toasted garlic sauce. She declared it scrumptious! We had dinner on a Wednesday when Media closed the streets and the experience was great start to finish. My wife is gluten free and the owners wife stopped by to review the menu with my wife to discuss how to meet her dietary needs. She ended up with the chicken enchilada and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I got the steak fajita - well seasoned and tasty. Wish we had known we could BYOT (T for tequila) as many groups did - they have virgin margaritas but if you bring your own.... The woman who helped my wife also sang several songs to the street crowd and she had a nice strong voice and was great fun. read more

This is my first time eating here and we had such a great experience! Obviously we had to do take-out because of the quarantine so I was a little nervous to try a new place in case the food didn't travel well. Needless to say, it was great even as take-out! We ordered the Queso Fundido as an app which I did have to reheat when I got home just because the cheese had solidified a bit but regardless, it was still delicious. I got the steak burrito which was huge and had very nice flavor. My boyfriend got the steak fajitas and thoroughly enjoyed everything as well. Very good food and obviously prepared by people who love what they serve and do. Don't expect it to be quick. From what they told me everything is cooked from scratch, to order, and the time it takes to eat reflects that. That's not bad, just be aware you will be there for a while if you are eating. The margarita was massive. Since it's bring your own tequila i got a good before and after of how much they used in two drinks. Yikes :-) but the margarita was very good. Dinner was very good. My wife had a flank steak that was overcooked and a little tough but otherwise all the food was really good. I had a pork dish cooked in banana leaves that was tasty. We went to this restaurant last night and walked in to loud singing. The owner sings a couple if songs while you dine. She loves her job and it put a smile on my face watching her. Her voice is very powerful in such a small dinning area. You definitely forget that you are in delco when she starts singing. When she was done signing she came over and noticed that we had tequila and was really excited to make us margaritas. They didn't taste strong but when we were leaving and we noticed how much tequila we drank, they were strong. We ordered tostadas, chicken quesadilla, and enchilada con mole. While we were ordering she explained what the menu items were since most people are probably used to Americanized Mexican food. Dinner also came with homemade salsa and chips. The food was delicious with the exception of the rice. There wasn't anything wrong with the rice i just didn't like it. I will definitely come back to try the tres leches cake. The couple next to us were eating it and it looked like a strawberry shortcake. read more

Hidalgo's was delicious, totally authentic and a really welcoming place. I felt a little unsure when we arrived around 7 on a Friday since no one else was there, but it quickly filled up. The restaurant is small and decorated simply, and the staff are really friendly and warm. Our server was Soledad and she was absolutely awesome, and a great singer! The restaurant is a BYOB, and they make an awesome margarita if you bring tequila. The margaritas are huge and served in a really cool mug. We ordered a ton of food, for appetizers we had guacamole, queso fresco and flautas. The guacamole was the best I've ever had-- totally fresh, chunky and flavorful. The queso fresco was really rich and stringy, it was delicious with soft tortillas (and very filling). On the menu, the flautas were described as 3 taquitos, but the 3 were cut in half and enough for the 6 of us to all try some. For dinner I had traditional chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce. They were served with black beans and rice and were delicious. My family ordered fajitas, salmon and a fish special. Everybody enjoyed their meals, though my brother did say that his fajitas weren't super hot. Hidalgo's is a great option for authentic Mexican, and I will definitely be back. read more

My brother recommended this place to my family so we decided to try it out for Dining Under the Stars after dropping off our election ballots. Loved the experience!! Our table ordered the margs (strawberry, mango and classic lemon lime). All were delicious and came in the cutest jugs!! It is BYOB, so remember to bring your own T (tequila). We then had the nachos with chorizo and the guacamole. The guacamole was the freshest, most delicious guac I've ever had in my life. The nachos were also amazing! Our table then ordered our entrees which included the Burro Ranchero with chicken, fajitas with steak, and more. I personally had the burro ranchero with chicken. It was so delicious and I was sad I was so full that I couldn't even eat half of it. Definitely will last at least two meals. Everyone else at the table was very happy with their meals as well. So overall, great meal. But what really puts this place over the top is the service and experience of dining there. The woman who owns the restaurant (with her family) served us and she was so warm, caring and funny!! She chatted with us throughout the meal and really connected with us which you rarely get these days when dining. At the end of our meal, she serenaded us with a beautiful song. She has an amazing voice! It was an unforgettable experience and I will recommend this place to everyone forever! Please go and enjoy this amazing dining experience. read more

I generally don't like Mexican food because it's never done right BUT this place crushes it!!!! It was absolutely delicious. I'm half Mexican and grew up going to my tias houses. This taste just like they use to make it! I can't rave enough. I tried the ceviche and traditional chicken enchiladas with green sauce. The ceviche is a perfect mix of flavors and chunks of fish. Could not have enjoyed our food more! We got the ceviche, which came with large chunks of tasty fish over a generous portion of pico de gallo. Then had the Pollo Hidalgo and the Chicken Enchiladas with green sauce, both of which tasted like they were straight out of our tia's kitchen. Even the beans were perfectly done. This place was decent but I wouldn't rave about it. El Limon is still the best, most authentic Mexican food I've had locally. They beat Hidalgo's in every area...tomatillo sauce...nachos...enchiladas...burrito...dessert. We came on a Saturday night. I was expecting a long wait based on reviews but we were actually seated within 8 minutes. The place is pretty small and there's nowhere to wait inside so you are kind of standing on top of the tables that are seated or if you are seated...people are standing on top of you. The tables are also very close together. We were in the worst seat in the house...right by the door...but we saw there were no other options so we just stayed there. The window seats look the nicest! There are some tables in the front of the restaurant and a very small back seating area which is much hotter. The female owner did come out and serenade us in Spanish. She was very loud. She really enjoyed doing it and most people seemed to love it, including my man. I personally find being serenaded awkward and she was very loud and pushed me into full blown headache from my slight headache. She wasn't bad...just loud. It was nice that she thanked everyone for spending the night with them. It's my understanding that her husband is the chef and her daughters are the waitresses. There are a lot of regulars that all really seem to love it here. It's a BYOB/BYOtequila. They have the ingredients to make margaritas if you bring your own tequila. They do not have fountain soda, only cans. My man got a can of sprite and he said it tasted weird. I stuck with water because I don't like canned soda. Appetizers - nachos and guacamole. The guacamole was delicious. It was served with chips which were also crispy and delicious. The nachos could be served with ground beef or chorizo. We did them without meat. They were pretty uninspired...just chips with cheese and some beans. We were glad we also ordered guac because it spiced them up a little more. Entrees- cheese enchiladas and steak burrito. My man said the steak in the burrito was the best he's had in one, however, the burrito as a whole was not the best he's had. El Limon is definitely better. The hot sauce served on the side of it was verrrrrry hot! The cheese enchiladas were decent. Not as much cheese...kinda limp looking and the tomatillo sauce was ok but again, nowhere near as flavorful as El Limon. The rice and beans were also ok. Dessert - dulce de Leche cake was the special and she was really pushing it but I don't like milk...or cake...so it's definitely not my thing. We were deciding between the banana dessert and another dessert which sounded like a variation of churros...fried fritters with cinnamon and sugar, served with vanilla ice cream. She recommended this over the bananas so I went with her recommendation...bad decision! This dessert was also uninspired. It was seriously just chips with cinnamon and sugar and vanilla ice cream in the middle. The description made it sound much more exciting. We wished we got the bananas. Oh well. Service - after singing, the owner came over to us to take our order. She was very nice and provided excellent customer service. Her daughters were iffy. The one didn't crack a smile the entire time and looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there. The other one was nice. Service was pretty slow which I anticipated based on reviews but that was fine because we were there to enjoy our night with each other, not to rush. I asked for extra tomatillo sauce and I thought she forgot. By the time it came out I was almost finished my enchiladas. They are not on open table which is a drawback for me. They are not open for lunch. They are closed on Mondays. I found it very difficult to find a menu online. Their only website seems to be their Facebook page. There is plenty of parking around the area. They do participate in dining under the stars. Prices are high for what is being served...in my opinion. We would probably give them another chance but definitely won't be rushing back. I'm sure this doesn't come as a surprise but I would definitely go to El Limon before returning here. Lol.
