Mmmmm. We stopped here driving through the area and I am so thankful for Yelp reviews guiding me here. When you're on a road trip, it's always nice to do something other than chain restaurants, and this is a perfect substitute! They have fast food prices and fast food speed, but the food is way beyond fast food! We all got the BBQ pork and it was delicious! The potato salad was creamy and yummy. The okra was incredible and fresh... my favorite! I wasn't very hungry, but I cleaned my plate and even ordered dessert. This place is worth the stop and nearly as quick as anywhere else. It's so nice to get real food on the road! Note: This place is a hole in the wall, small with only a few tables. However, they do offer drive-thru, so that's a plus :) read more

We try pork (ribs and pulled Pork) sometimes and do alright, down in Texas. Our Brisket, on the other hand, brings a tear to our eye once you pull it out of the smoker. With that being said, coming to the south, I knew I had to try some pork ribs and pulled pork. After reading numerous reviews, opted for Hickory Pit, since I was out in these parts. I was not disappointed. Best ribs I have had in my life. Relatively inexpensive. My wife had the bbq sandwich. Equally as good. Great sides, which is often overlooked by smokehouses. Excellent potato salad and slaw. Fries and tots are good. Hoping to go back before I return home. I ain't got no problem driving 45 mins to do it! read more

Well... Yelp let us down on this one. We were on vacation in Georgia and wanted some BBQ. Of course we asked Yelp for its recommendation and we got Hickory Pit Bar-B-Que. So we made the trip to Tennessee. We should've gone somewhere else. The joint is small with limited seating. The service was just fine. We ordered the BBQ baked potato, pork sandwich and chopped beef plate. The potato was bland and the toppings were an amalgamation of uber-sweet BBQ sauce, bland pork, and chives. The pork sandwich was bland. The meat tasted like it had been reheated. The chopped beef would have been decent, but it was flooded with that super sweet sauce, drowning out any flavor the meat could've had. In the end, BBQ is a very hard thing to do well. We have only found 2 places that serve good 'Q. This is not one of them. read more

The ambience is very "bbq pit" the servers are super nice and helpful. But the bbq isn't special. I really wanted it to be good but it was just barely average. The ribs were well Cooked but lacked any character and soul. They tasted like salt and smoke with a little dash of sweet. But no bark or bite or even savory sweet profiles. The chopped pork was also just cooked plain pork. The sauce wasn't special it tastes out of the jar. It's not bad but it's just lacking any depth and love. No passion in the food. The kids grilled cheese and the tator tots were staples and cooked great. Slaw is a minced slaw and it's good. Liked the potato salad as well even with a heavy mayonnaise base. read more

20 years ago, there were good local barbecue joints all over the South. Most have been replaced by big chains. The Hickory Pit is a throwback mom and pop barbecue shop. The meat is excellent. I have had the pork, beef the spare ribs and the baby back ribs. The sauce is Georgia style (sweet). This is one of your best barbecue options in the Chattanooga area. read more

Ok, I'm not a potato salad person (except for my mom's) but this has got to be the BEST! The pulled beef and okra were great as well! Today is my second visit to Hickory Pit Bar-B-Que. I travel through Chattanooga twice monthly and am always looking for good places to eat. I'm pretty particular about my BBQ, but I must say this BBQ is among the best I've ever eaten. We have eaten ribs, chopped beef, chopped chicken and chopped pork. The pork is the perfect mixture of inside and outside meat for my taste. The chicken and beef are awesome. The ribs rival the original downtown Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, which is saying a lot!! The meat has been hot and moist each time. We have tried baked beans, slaw and potato salad. All three sides were amazingly good! The slaw is the best restaurant slaw I've ever eaten. The apple pie is also great if you have room left. Last but not least the owner knows what "diet water" is, always a plus in my book! read more

My family and I were traveling to Chicago and stopped here for dinner before getting to our hotel. Everything was excellent! You don't want to pass up this place on your drive. We all ordered something different - I had the chicken plate with beans and curly fries; Mom had the half-chicken with green beans; Dad had a plate of pork ribs; and my grandma had shredded pork. It's safe to say we all just about ate our plates along with our meal. We were all impressed with the size of mom's half-chicken - it was huge! (And very juicy). I also enjoyed my curly fries and beans, which had great flavor and were super fresh. The barbecue sauce also has a great flavor, sweet and tangy but with a little kick that isn't too overpowering. It went great with the Texas Toast and huge meat portions we had! We also loved the cozy family atmosphere at Hickory Pitt Barbecue! Service was also fantastic and very quick, despite the amount of people coming in for order pick-up and drive thru service. We were in the mood for some BBQ, and this place was just down the street from our hotel. They had amazing food. We ordered the Brunswick stew, bologna sandwich, burger, spare ribs platter, pulled pork sandwich, and corn dog. Everything was tasty, and the burger was very tender. A little gem of a place with down home Bbq! This family owned hole in the wall doesn't look like much from the outside but trust me, the food and service are awesome. I had a hunch it would be good when we parked next to several police cars because cops know where to eat! We went on a Saturday for lunch and it happened to be "catfish" Saturday so I tried the catfish plate. They make their own cornmeal breading and tater sauce. It was delicious! The baked beans were sweet and smoky, perfect! Homemade hush puppies had me drooling like a pup! My husband had the bbq plate with fried okra and baked beans, he ate every bite. The owner and his son checked on our table multiple times. A steady stream of locals and travelers came in to eat. All this was just 24$ & even though I called it in I left a small tip. Should have left a bigger one. Alright, once again.. perfect food! Truly, truly, truly some of the best BBQ in the area. Actually, in the southeast! When I want BBQ that's actually been smoked, I come here. (I wish there was a way to emphasize the text on Yelp so I could underscore "smoked.") The ribs are exactly what you should expect from ribs. Tender, fall off the bone and juicy. There's a smoke ring! Which means yummy goodness in the belly. I really dig the spice factor on the rub, too. Nice and peppery without being hot. The sauce is the exact right sauce, too. You don't think much of it on its own, but partnered with the meat - it's fabulous. Their BBQ is so good, that when we have family cookouts we cheat and order Hickory Pit by the trays.
