I'd give this a 3.5 but I'm rounding up because the service is very nice and there was nothing particularly wrong with the food. The price for the food was okay - pricier than other places but the portions were generous. The meat was tender and juicy but there's no smoky flavor or smoke ring. It doesn't even smell smoky around the restaurant. It was also not really seasoned. We tried pork, brisket, and chicken. Nothing bad but nothing great. The baked beans and macaroni and cheese deserve accolades though and bump a star. We did try the nachos and the chips were pretty bland and disappointing. Overall I think the meats need better seasoning as things tended towards bland. Maybe we went on an off day. It was around 2 p.m. and we were the only people there. We were pretty hyped to try it because of the reviews but left a bit disappointed. For comparison, we're huge BBQ fans - like Lewis, Wright's, SAW's, etc. so maybe it's just not our style. I got a recommendation for Barque and I am so glad I had a chance to give them a chance. Equisitely smoked meats. The atmosphere here is rather divey. It is in a small cinder block building Inside you have a counter and doors that open into the kitchen so they could bring out the foot. Fast service. I tried the tacos, brisket and pulled pork. Pulled pork was nicely done and the salsa, sour cream, and sauce were a perfect topping with the onions and cilantro. The brisket was done perfectly. Nice and juicy. My dad and I ate her a few weeks ago (I'm a bit late with my reviews) and the food was good, though I wasn't a fan of any of the sauces. My dad really enjoyed his meal. The place is rustic and has a nice, large outdoor seating area. Patty, the patio cat, was sweet and happy to accept any offerings. The owner was really nice and brought us anything we needed. My boyfriend and I stumbled on this place as we were roadtripping and decided to eat lunch here. I'm so glad we did because this is the BEST brisket I have ever had. It was so tender and soft. I got the melt which also had aioli and cheese on it. The mac and cheese was also delicious and creamy. You order at the front and then they bring your food. It took a minute for our food to come out but it was definitely worth the wait. Would recommend!!! read more

This little converted gas station puts out the absolute best BBQ in town! Don't be misled by its' spartan appearance, the service is spectacular (Megan is a star!) and the food is to die for! Regardless of the protein item you select, it will have a wonderful smoke flavor. The side dishes, are all outstanding with my personal favorites being the greens and in the summer, the cucumber salad. They have won awards for their BBQ, their chili, and one other item you will want to try is their stuffed balked potato, get it with the burnt ends.....what a wonderful meal! read more

I went on Thanksgiving to pick up an online order, nothing in this review should be reflective of the service, the guy working the counter was working his tail off, and he was friendly and helpful and was good communicating what they were out of and how long the wait would be. Kudos to him and also the team of workers who worked Thanksgiving day, it was much appreciated. Now though, I have to talk about the food and I have to be honest it ran the gamut from decent to honestly not very good. Brisket - Had a great flavor and the slices were perfect, however, there was no smoke ring at all on the brisket and very little bark, and not much smokey flavor at all. Not accusing the place of anything but imo this brisket was likely smoked but not for the full cook and was likely finished in the oven. Fat render was good though. Burnt ends - Great! Pulled pork - Once again almost no smokey flavor at all, seasoning was very light, pretty average to kind of not good pulled pork Cornbread stuffing - Serviceable, lots of fresh herbs so I liked that, seemed like it wasn't cooked long enough though and was pale in color Coleslaw - Probably my favorite coleslaw from any BBQ place I've ever been! Mac and Cheese - Fantastic! I've seen other people complain about the black pepper but I love black pepper so I enjoyed it. All in all a pretty middling meal and I hate to be so harsh, but have to judge the food on it's merits. Dude at the counter was nice. Food came out hot and pretty fast. They happened to be out of a few things, including chili. We ended up getting brisket, burnt ends, Mac & cheese, and potato salad. Brisket had good seasoning. Soft and juicy. Burnt ends had great flavor. Mac & cheese was watery, very garlic forward with visible black pepper flakes. Potato salad was very pickle/vinegar forward. I grew up in Memphis and consider myself a BBQ snob. l've also recently discovered the joys of a proper brisket now that my daughter lives in Austin. Barque (bark) brings those two places together on East Main St in Chattanooga. The brisket was moist and flavorful as were the ribs. I didn't get much of the pulled pork because I filled up on the ribs and brisket but it was done proper. If you don't get the collard greens as a side, you'll miss about as good a collards as I've ever had. Barque has an authentic BBQ atmosphere with an old convenience store dining room, picnic tables out back, beer, corn hole and the smokers near by. And, just like the name says, dogs are welcome too. Hidden at the east end of East Main Street, closer to Dodds Avenue, this barbecue place anchors the Southside dining scene, just before the ascent to Missionary Ridge. The food was fine, but to be fair, we did show up about 30 minutes before closing. The brisket, which was a little on the fatty side, actually was pretty tasty, but I was not thrilled with the ribs, as they were thin and not very plentiful. The macaroni and cheese and baked beans were good, but the cornbread was a little dry. The one waitress/cashier was friendly, helpful, and talkative. The exterior seating looked neat and spacious, but the heat put us inside with a main area converted from an old quick mart, complete with cooler doors that served as connectors from the kitchen to the front counter. In truth, they probably helped keep the heat out of the dining room. Overall, it was a fair experience. read more

The quality you get for a 2 meat plate was like 6 burnt ends. For the ribs, I thought you would get the same cut of meat, but you can see in the picture that there were 2 different ribs that had no flavor either. Let me start by saying, we were stoked to see this area of Main Street with an upscale BBQ restaurant. My wife ordered chili and I ordered the brisket melt sandwich. Our other guests ordered the hot dog and Caesar salad with brisket. We weren't very impressed with the brisket. We're used to brisket having a rubbery, fatty texture typical, western style. Barque brisket was soft, with a shredded texture, almost like stew meat. The chili had a fantastic flavor profile but the brisket texture detracted from the overall experience. I tried the cheesy macaroni a friend ordered, it was good unassuming restaurant quality product. The sauces were standard fare, tomatoey molasses base. we didn't try the mustard sauces, so I can't comment. Overall, the food experience was average. I tried the chicken sandwich--flavorful, tender, awesome. My husband got the burnt ends sandwich...so so good. Tender, smoky beef that melts in the mouth. I came across this BBQ joint and decided to try their ribs, brisket & chicken. Their smoked BBQ proteins were AMAZING. It had a robust flavor with just enough smoky aroma to remind you that it took awhile for these baby to taste this delicious. I definitely worth $75 for sure. First place we landed upon arriving in Chattanooga...desired BBQ and found this place. We had our two rescue dogs and cat...no problema...got to sit outside, in the shade Believe the waitresses name was Jennifer and she was sooo accommodating! and brought water for animals and beer for us! Lagunitas ruled as their food! Had a pulled pork and a brisket sandwich with slaw on the side...they gave us a sampler of the burnt ends...delicious! Best BBQ turkey in the city! The restaurant itself is very unassuming, but the food is SOLID. Great outdoor patio space with tons of comfy seating.
