I've been eating here for 15 years and I've never been disappointed. Barbecue is top notch, most of the sides and banana pudding are made in house and those recipes have been perfected, be sure to try the potato planks, they are addicting. Servings are generous. The sauce is amazing. And surprising to me, they have the best chili slaw dog I've had in Chattanooga. As exceptional as the food is here, the owners are even more so. They are two of the kindest people I've encountered in Chattanooga and seeing them never fails to make my day. It's cozy, not fancy. One of the better BBQ places in Chattanooga; I have been here on several occasions and love this little "hole in the wall" place located at the bottom of Signal Mountain; if you like Alabama football, then you will be in heaven because you can tell they are fans by all the Bama decor on the wall. The food and service is excellent-it is family-owned, and they are not only quick but extremely friendly even on busy days. I recommend getting the pulled pork and combining the regular and spicy sauces; the potato salad is also delicious but you can't go wrong with any of the other sides. The only downside is that parking is extremely limited and seating is also limited. I would recommend coming early or late for lunch to avoid longer lines and getting a solid parking space. read more

This was the best bar b q pork sandwich I have had in Tennessee. It was almost as good as Abe's Bar B Q in Clarksdale, MS. I met the owner Jeff while I was dining in the restaurant. He stated that he's been in business since 1986. He also said that he had to pay $10,000 for the secret recipe from an owner of a bar b q restaurant at that time who passed away. Like others, you need to come at a time when they are not busy to find a -parking place. They do have a drive thru that circles around the back of the restaurant. You enter on the right side and go to the back which is where the drive thru window is and come out on the left side. menu items ordered: coke, bar b q pork sandwich, and crinkle cut French fries. Your coke comes with free refills which is self serve. The bar b q sandwich came with slaw and bar b q sauce that was put on with an amount by the chef. Not your fanciest place but the food is soooo good. Seems like it's mostly a carry out place but we dined in. We were in town for a wedding and stopped here on Valentine's Day. They answered our questions regarding the menu and our food came out quickly and steaming hot. So much food but oh so delicious. Chicken was moist and had great flavors. Get the tator logs and fried okra. You won't regret it. The best part of the whole meal (even though we were so stuffed) was the banana pudding. Wow!! I've never tasted anything so delicious. The food was really good and the tater logs were yummy. Not a big fan of their slaw, but that's a personal thing and I'm sure lots of people love it. The meet was tender and the pork was very moist. The beef was a slightly dry but very flavourful. I've traveled around America and have been blessed to eat at the best barbecue places around the country - this is good. Their sauce is very unique. Dark molasses based sauce with a very slight hint of clove which works perfectly on the pork, but (in my opinion) isn't as much of a hit with the beef. I bet it's great with their chicken though!! You can tell that this is a labour of love and that they put that love into their food. They're not trying to be something they aren't. This is an old style side of the road barbecue shack and there "ain't nothin' wrong with that"!! I will definitely be back and next time I'm going to tackle one of their amazing looking stuffed baked potatoes. Really, really not good. I would not recommend this place to anyone. You could tell the guy just didnt like me and my brisket proved it. We got shoe-leather level of dryness that I wouldnt have fed to a dog, inedible. I wouldnt go back under any circumstances but maybe growing up in Texas got me used brisket done differently. I heard about this place and got rave reviews about them. I was in the mood for a grilled sausage sandwich so I decided to venture out and give them a try. The girl who took my order simply didn't know how to take my order or what to charge me. She said no one ever ordered a sausage sandwich per say. What I ended up with were sliced sausages on a bun with sauce and I added cheese. It was okay but not exactly what I was looking for. The baked beans were good and the mac and cheese was sub par. I specifically asked her if the banana pudding was made with whipped cream, she said no and it was, I threw it away. I don't like whipped cream banana pudding. I have had better BBQ pork than I had here I have to say and I wouldn't make a special trip here but it wasn't bad. The "hot" sauce was not hot at all. The coleslaw was good,baked beans were not much more than a can of pork n beans with bell pepper! The banana pudding is a must if you go,the actual pudding has a banana flavor! The place is very old and dated and I'm sure the girls hands were clean deboning the baked chicken in plain sight without gloves!!! Service was good and friendly. The okra wasn't bad. The fries were okay. The green beans were watery and flavorless. Served with a piece of bread with no butter. And it was sitting on top so it was just s dry piece of bread and seemed out of place. We were looking for a great local place and it was just alright. My husband had thrbpulled pork sandwich and thought it was really good. I assume the owner was working and he was super friendly. Reminding us to get refills and checking in with us. For openers, if you believe the best barbecue is usually found in the worse part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, you're willing to stop at an old gas station (as they used to be called) that has been serving up great cue for 38 years and you believe the proprietor here in the deep South is really named, Jefferson Davis, then you've found Shuford's Bar-B-Q right on the outskirts of Chattanooga and some good eating. Jeff (as he prefers) started up by not only buying the location but also paying more money than was reasonable for the Shuford's barbecue sauce recipe back when he got started. In today's dollars that'd be a six figure sum. And he still follows that same recipe in a back room of this tiny little shack, stirring a huge mixer with a canoe paddle. Takes 12 hours, he says to brew up 45 gallons. Never thought of Carpel Tunnel as an occupational hazard in a barbecue joint.. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. The guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (90+ barbecue reviews on Yelp) found the Shuford Smokehouse just off the highway on Signal Mountain Road. The two gas pumps were removed years ago and the driveway now houses an additional room where folks sometimes have to wait for one of the very few tables. The prices are reasonable ( $4.35 and $5.35 for regular and jumbo sandwiches); plates range (with a tender green onion for garnish) from $8.35 to $12.95 for a half slab, and they all come with a couple sides. More about that further down. Of everything sampled, the brisket out paced the pack by a length and a half. Doesn't make the pulled pork, the ribs are the turkey sandwich bad, but rather good - just not as. Too many pittmasters slice away that thin layer of fat atop a slow smoking brisket, leaving the cash paying customer with a piece of perfectly seasoned (in some cases), but very dry meat. Fat (not too much) captures the smoke and keeps the flavor. Shuford's brisket is exceptional. Pulled pork was moist and with good, but not overwhelming smoke flavor. The turkey sandwich, topped with slaw (more about that later) was likely equally as good. Shuford's Smokehouse (sometimes they call it that) also has ribs, Polish sausage and turkey legs. All on the agenda for next time. The Brunswick Stew (some folks omit the 'c'), is literally a tomato sauce based stew with a chunk or two of potato and carrots floating around. Different? Yes but very flavorful and clearly a barbecue dish. The slaw and potato salad are both in the very good to exceptional class. The slaw being finely cut and crisp, not drowning in sugar and mayo. The potato salad has small chunks of potato in a nice mustard based sauce. Were told the fried okra are even better, but too full; to try. Didn't try for the fries or onion rings, smiling lady at the counter honestly answering they came frozen. Now about that sauce. Not sure what all the ingredients are. Certainly tomato based, likely sorghum or molasses, maybe a touch of clove - and very distinctive. Their regular sauce is on the table and if you ask, they have a "baby" hot sauce and a "good" hot sauce as well. You don't ask a man who paid a fortune for the recipe what's in his sauce. And here's the rub: there is none. Jeff Davis (real name, he swears) doesn't believe in rubs. Good meat, cooked slow and low over a bed off season hickory adds all the flavor he says is needed. Décor? Starts with the first letter in the alphabet and is almost all Alabama. The man has built a barbecue shrine to the Tide. T-shirts are a badge of honor, and Shuford's was good quality, clever design and reasonably priced at $12 per. Finally, banana pudding. Not just banana pudding, but really, really good banana pudding. As in "don't miss this even if it means not finishing your slaw and potato salad. Five stars to the place that looks like a barbecue joint ought to, has a true Southerner minding the store and whose food is mighty fine. read more

We look forward to eating here every time we come to town. After growing up in the south, it's hard going for as long as I do without a good pulled pork sandwich. This is something that is not found in the northeast. The sandwiches are sheer perfection. Never any nasty chunks of fat, just meat. I like both the sweet and spicy sauces. The buns too are perfectly soft. We had the onion rings and they were also as good as they come. Service is friendly and it's easy to get in/out. We stopped by here for lunch. This is a tiny old place... and by old, I mean it showed it's age. Comfort in the tiny dining area obviously isn't the priority here... nor is cleanliness. While the place was packed when we arrived, there were a couple of open tables that were dirty, and remained dirty while we stood in line to order. It wasn't after all of us ordered that someone bothered to come out and wipe down some tables so that we had a place to sit. The building sits very close to Signal Mountain Road and there aren't a lot of places to park. Be careful parking too close to the building, as you might block the drive-through lane. It's not marked, so watch out! If there isn't a place to park, the restaurant is probably full. Someone here (the owner, I presume), is a University of Alabama fan. There is 'Bama football memorabilia all over the place. The restaurant has a feeling of being old and dirty, more like you're at someone's house than a restaurant. You can see the kitchen from counter, and for the most part it looks clean, there were some questionable things I noticed, but they were pretty busy that day.... As for the food... it was okay. I've had better BBQ and I've had worse. I got a heaping portion of pulled pork. The food comes out pretty quick and the sauces were pretty good. It's a good thing they put some bottles on the tables, because it sure doesn't come with very much. It was a good sized portion and was a decent value for the money. It's pulled pork, so it's kinda hard to screw it up. I didn't get any sides or anything, I was most into just getting some BBQ. The guy behind the counter wasn't very friendly, but he was quick and efficient in getting our orders taken and sent off to the kitchen. A word of caution, the restroom is most certainly not ADA compliant. It's not an issue for me, but that bathroom door sure is tiny! Shuford's was okay. Great little, nasty BBQ joint with delicious food, cheap prices, and cheap ambiance. For a ten spot I got the half rack of ribs with fried okra, coleslaw, a slice of white bread, a green onion, and a coke. The ribs were a bit dry in spots but very meaty and tasted great. The serving was pretty big and I couldn't touch the final rib. The coleslaw was too finely shredded and super creamy, so I really didn't eat much of it. The fried okra was stupid-good, fresh as could be, and awesome. I was too busy enjoying the ribs and okra to pay any attention to the white bread or green onion. The coke machine was serving mostly foam, so everyone had to make at least three trips in order to wind up with a full cup. The girl behind the counter gave the impression that she had better things to do and little patience for out of townees with questions about the menu. The food was bland, point blank. Pork was cold in some spots, warm in others. Sauce was slathered on like an afterthought. The potato salad was inconsistent, although it was the proper temperature as was the okra. Wifey and I were on a weekend, foodie, fun, get away to Chattanooga...we determined we wanted BBQ and, actually, went to another place, but it was closed...so we, instead, found this one...and glad we did! This is your PROTOTYPICAL BBQ place...i.e. hole...in...the...wall...and...really good! The pork was smoked perfectly and was very moist and tender...just like BBQ pork is supposed to be. Now it was pulled, not chopped (my NC preference)...but I can live with this! The sauce, while a bit thicker and sweeter than I normally do...was quite tasty...and went well on the BBQ Sandwiches we had... Now...the SURPRISE was the Tater Log...imagine a whole potato, sliced up, salted and fried in some VERY hot oil...crispy with good salty potato flavor...this was the hit of the night...we are going to try and replicate this in the Air Fryer! However, if you love a great smokehouse barbeque, Shufords is perfect for you. It's a hole-in-the-wall little place at the foot of Signal Mountain, and you might pass it if you aren't looking for it. There is next to no parking, limited seating, and Alabama Football memorabilia galore. But the barbeque is crazy good! The flavor of the pork is smoky and the mild sauce is just right.
