I went here for a facial and massage with my spouse for our anniversary. The facial extractions were rough even though I asked for gentle extractions 3 times. The products used were from the drug store ... neutrogena, clean and clear etc . When I came home I had a reaction to something my face was red burning, hot to the touch and had a combo of welts and hives . Not what I expect for a $95 facial . The staff was very nice but not the experience I wanted for the price I paid. read more

My husband and I visited Hibiscus last Saturday. Its a quaint and clean space with relaxing music. We were put in different rooms; however it was appreciated that we were the only guest for that time Frame so there wasn't overcrowding like at other massage parlors. After the massage we compared our experiences and one thing that appeared very common was that both therapists talked throughout the entire session. They had great spirits which were appreciated. however, we both were looking forward to this massage for weeks and all we wanted to do was be pampered and relaxed. It was very difficult to do so because they continued through conversation for the entire hour. But if you want a place that will REALLY release your tension and knots in your muscles, Hibiscus Therapeutic Center is your kind of place. Wendi is the owner, and she has been a massage therapist (the key word is therapist because it is like physical therapy) for 11 years. After telling her about my pain points, she warmed up my muscles using some hot stones and really worked out some knots that had been in my back and shoulders for years. She also used acupressure in my neck and legs to release tension. Did I feel pain during the massage? Yes. But was feeling more nimble than a four-year-old afterwards worth it? You betcha. read more

I had a great massage at Hibiscus, but even better was the level of care that Stephanie and her colleague gave me. I showed up with a groupon and no appointment (having confused my groupons), but at no moment were they less than great with me. Instead, they made me comfortable, were incredibly sweet and gave me a lovely prenatal massage. They went out of their way to make this very pregnant, very flustered client very happy. An hour massage and my tight shoulders and sciatica were a thing of the past, and I had soaked up a ton of beautiful energy from these lovely ladies. I cannot recommend this place enough, and am so excited to go back again soon. I felt so refreshed and rejuvenated after my prenatal massage at Hibiscus. This was my first time there, and I was immediately welcomed with open arms by Wendi and Stephanie. You feel so relaxed in the waiting area as the decor and set-up was calming with warm colors and beautiful ethnic artwork. Stephanie was a wonderful masseuse. She definitely massaged the knots out of my shoulders, lower back and calves. She also had some funny stories to share, which kept me giggling. I got a Groupon for a gift. It took forever to get an appointment. I finally managed to get one. I'm really disappointed. As others have said, they ask you to take your shoes off and offer you a tray of gross sandals if you want. I chose to go barefoot. Is that even legal? There must be a health code. There's no way those things are sanitized. Ick. I was offered water before and after the session. They gave me a small Dixie cup, like a shot glass size. Seriously? I assume the Dixie cup was new. The therapist talked A LOT. I tried to make it clear that I wanted to relax because I read some reviews about the talking. The message wasn't received and I decided to go with it. The actual massage was, eh... I was not impressed. My BIGGEST complaint is that the therapist smelled like stale cigarette smoke. Now, I will say that it *could* have been an essential oil or something like that but I doubt it. I spent most of the time trying not to breathe " in her direction ". I felt obligated to tip because they make you pay $3.50 in tax. I'm not the type that doesn't tip but I don't like feeling forced. Take your time and money elsewhere. read more

I just received my first deep tissue massage from Wendi Browne. What a healing experience. I have been suffering with debilitating sciatica for over a year. This is my third visit to Hibiscus, my mom purchased a groupon for me as my Xmas gift. I emailed Wendi on Monday and she got back to me the following day. I was able to schedule the upcoming Thursday at 9. Wendy does a great deep tissue massage that hurts so good. She customizes the oils & as I had some back pain, she targeted this area and applied an ointment to relax the muscles. I've been to Sahana ( for those who love massages) and Hibiscus. I prefer Hibiscus and I'd rather support a small business owner. I also learned that Wendi does facials so I will be coming back again for my deep tissue and facial. If you have any chronic pain, stiffness, soreness these ladies will work it out. I knew I needed a deep tissue massage vs. a relaxing "vacation" style treatment. These ladies worked it out. Shelise literally found every pressure point I had and got the blood and energy flowing in all of the right places. This is definitely an intense body experience. Their a scam, i purchased a spa day on group on with them. They scheduled me a month after and told me they were bust. I never received a confirmation to verify my appointment the day before or their last business day. When arrived at my appointment a half hour hand I found that the address did not exist. When I tried calling a few times no one answered. 2.5 hours later I received a call from the "business owner" who said I must have come late and my appointment was canceled, When I told her that her address did not exist and that I requested a refund from groupon she rushed me off the phone and said that I have to follow up with groupon. Went here yesterday for much needed relief. I like most people had purchased the groupon. Hard to find location and BRING QUARTERS metered parking only. Minus 1 star for that I wish I knew this ahead of time. Buzz the button and walk up stairs and take off your shoes, they don't have a sign but that is the rule. When you walk in you are transformed. The smell of lemon grass is infused into the air, with soothing music I was immediately relaxed. I had Wendi as my therapist and I was getting a deep tissue massage, YES I SAID DEEP TISSUE. She had to make sure I really wanted Deep Tissue. But I needed it. Since I travel for a living and hadn't had a massage since February I needed to give back to my body. Man Wendi beat me up in the most amazing me. I held all my tension in my upper back, shoulders and pecs. It was the first time I felt so much relief after such pain, again a good pain. Wendi said the reason she wanted to make sure I wanted deep tissue was because it makes grown men cry, well I happen to have a very high tolerance for pain. It hurt and She said I'd be sore today, but it isn't too bad. I am coming back hands down. They are offering $50 for facial or massages until the end of May to be used when ever you want. I will have to agree with most of the other reviews- DO NOT GO TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I too believe that they are scam artists. I purchased a voucher through AmazonLocal some time ago and for the past 6 months I have called and e-mailed in order to schedule an appointment to no avail. It seems as if EVERY time slot was booked at all times. Even when I asked for their availability they said that they were fully booked. It is quite difficult to believe that EVERY time slot in the whole month of May is booked. Luckily, I was able to get a credit through AmazonLocal. I had a Groupon for a massage and I did not have trouble booking an appointment unlike some of the other yelp reviewers. However, I wrote in the subject of my email AND the body of the email that I had a Groupon for a hot stone massage. When I arrived, the masseuse told me that it was not specified. I whipped out my smart phone to show her the email. I went ahead with a regular massage since I was not about to wait for stones to heat up. I would've given this place 1 star but Shelise was really great at making me feel comfortable and talking me through what she was doing during the massage. read more

This was my second massage ever and it was what I expected from a massage. What I thought was my trouble spot was just the result of a lot of trouble spots that Shelise identified and explained to me. She worked out 10+ years of stress and bad posture in one session. STAY AWAY I have been visiting YELP for years, but I have never been compelled to write a review until now. I was so excited when I purchased the Groupon this past winter. A facial and a massage for $100 seemed too good to be true! I called immediately to set up my appointment. The woman on the phone was very nice and we chatted about the popularity of the Groupon. I was hoping to make an appointment for that weekend, but she didn't have an opening for me until a Friday until late April. (I assumed that this was because she set aside certain time slots for Groupon purchasers, but I could be wrong). Fast forward 6 weeks when I show up for my massage and facial. I had been looking forward to my "spa day" and even took the day off of work (a rarity). It was a little difficult to find the place, as the sign is an 8x10 piece of paper in a window. I pushed the bell, expecting to be buzzed in. I heard nothing so pushed a few more times, until a woman inside started shouting at me to push open the door. I pushed open the door, to find a woman on the stairs, yelling down at me, asking what I wanted. Not the most relaxing greeting for my "spa" experience. When I told her I had an appointment, I was once again admonished. I was assured that I did not have an appointment. I was already shaken by her rude and aggressive tone as I climbed the steps and followed her into the office. Nope - I was not on their calendar. Apparently, they never wrote down my appointment. To the woman's credit, she did offer to give me one of the two treatments, but they could not fit in both of the services I pre-paid for. Plus, after her attitude on the steps, I had no desire to receive any treatments from this woman. I left immediately. This whole experience was the exact opposite of what I was looking for. As I was leaving I did have the opportunity to look in some of the rooms. The place was shabby. Based on my treatment and the conditions of the facility, I was sure that I never wanted to come back. One positive note: GROUPON was fantastic about all of this. As soon as I got home, I called them and expressed my dissatisfaction. They immediately credited the full amount to my account. Be Careful before buying coupons for this place. I bought a session as a gift to my husband a year ago. They simply never honored it. Each time we called for an appointment, we were told they were booked for the next three months or so. I even sent emails to the owner to no avail. A year later, the deal had expired. If I could give this rating a half star, I would. Bought the Groupon and have had a very difficult time scheduling an appointment because if you work a 9-5 p.m. job, it will be impossible. It was so difficult, I tried to get a refund from Groupon. Groupon called Wendi and advised that if the vendor is having trouble accomodating the Groupon customers due to limited availability, the vendor must honor the Groupon purchase and still provide the service even past the expiration date. The vendor called me back to try and accomodate but quickly got snippy and full of attitude. Even told me that the only reason she would accomodate me and my friend was because she is not 'mean'. I requested evening appointment and was willing to wait until December but Wendi informed me that evening for her is 4 p.m.., not like Americans who consider evening to be 8 or 9 p.m. Really? If you want to run a 9-5 p.m. business, then advertise it that way; don't make your potential customers feel crazy because they would like to book an appointment after their normal working day. I also don't need a lecture on how hard it is to massage eight people during the day. Not my issue, you chose this profession. If you are stressed about it, book a massage or get therapy but don't complain about it to potential customers to try and justify why business hours do not include any time after 5 p.m. Very unprofessional and poor customer service. Not only will I never consider going there again, I will make sure that I spread the word about this vendor. Horrible experience and I didn't even make it in the door. NEVER go here! The ladies there are rotten. I bought 2 groupons to use for my wife and myself, after I emailed them to ask if we could use them together in a couples session. I was told that we would have to pay the difference between 2 single sessions and a couple session ($45). After we had our massages I gave them my groupons ($100 value each) but they refused to honor them. They said that I would only get the value that I paid for them, not the $100 value it said on each groupon. I tried to reason with them, but they refused to listen to what I had to say and demanded that I pay for the full cost (minus what I actually paid for the groupons). They yelled at me, one of them stood in the door way while the other stood up from their desk, yelled at me and made me feel threatned. I ended up paying way more than I should have and didn't get to use my groupons. I feel so violated! Please, never go to these ladies. This establishment made me so angry I had to wait 2 weeks before I was calm enough to right this review. Purchased a groupon attempted to set up appointment. Called multiple times and they said they were booked every Saturday that month. I was upset because it was for Mothers Day but OK no big deal. I called and left another voicemail ( They never pick up) and asked if I could have an appt for 6/14. Days go by and no one calls me back. I call again and actually get someone. She said they were booked on Saturday til the end of July I was VERY upset. She asked me if I minded a week day I said I would call back. An hour later I call back NO ANSWER I am beyond frustrated. I begin to leave a voicemail calmly explaining my frustration of no one answering or calling me back and the owner picks up the phone (which means she was standing there listening to me leave the voicemail) and procceds to speak over me and tell me she left me a voicemail. I told her about the conversation I had earlier and she said " You never called here no one spoke to you and said we were booked" So she is saying I am lying... I have been going here for over 1 1/2 years now and upon reading some of these negative reviews I would like to clarify a few issues. First of all, the Hibiscus Theraputic Center I have been going to for the last year and a half is certainly at the location listed on my Groupon- l 37 Watchung PLAZA in Montclair, NJ. As a further note, be aware that there is a Watchung Ave as well as a Watchung Plaza so be careful to note this for your directions. This may be why someone could not find the establishment. There was a Stephanie there when I first went but she is no longer there. The street parking is limited to only 1 hour so you should use the parking lot around the corner because there the meters have longer time.. Drive passed Hibiscus (it should be on your right side) and make a right at the light and then another light and you will see the parking lot. I have always had a great experience here and the owner Wendy and all of her staff extremely capable, pleasant and professional.. It is very relaxing and immaculate, which is important to me. The deep tissue massages are great for my low back, neck and shoulder pain. I always use my groupons and never have had a problem here. Of course I make sure to follow the guideilnes and use them within the valid dates as per the conditions. And I always call as far in advance as I can to schedule because I realize that I am not the only one who is buying groupons nor patronizing this popular and busy establishment. We all should take into account that we are not the only ones buying groupons . If you wait till the last week or so day of your groupon then there is a good chance that you are not going to get day or time you want. I did this at a hair establishment and called after my expiration date so I had to only accept face value for what I paid. This is fair and reasonable. I discovered this establishment through a gift Groupon. I was just back for a 2nd time, and I purchased a 3-session package as soon as I left. Wendi, the owner and my massage therapists is great. She has a very positive energy and is very caring with the customers. I travel a lot for work and used to get tension headaches often. I prefer the deep tissue massage, which although discomforting at times, is incredibly effective. Wendi is gifted in figuring out what is wrong and addressing it. I am looking forward to my next session in a few weeks. When booking appointments, I find it easier to just email them directly. read more

The first time I went to Hibiscus was with a Groupon. I have been back several times since. The ladies are warm and welcoming. When it comes to massages, they mean business! I have been to spas and massage parlors where I have had a more gentle and relaxing experience, but if you ask for deep tissue or even a firm massage, you certainly get what you ask for. I usually feel like Jello for several days after visiting Hibiscus. Nobody else has ever successfully managed to massage my knots into submission. Sure, I kind of feel like they are beating the crap out of me sometimes, but it's totally worth it. I'm pretty sure she used a meat tenderizer on me at some point. Although obviously if you ask for lighter pressure, they'll accommodate the request, but apparently I'm a glutton for knot destroying punishment. As a 40+year old dance instructor, my body always has aches and pains & I've definitely had my share of massage therapy to help maintain & heal. But, I have to say, for the last five years Wendi's hands & spirit have been the only ticket of relief for me. She has helped ease the pain of plantar fasciitis, soothed muscle spasms in my shoulders, assisted in the rehabbing of a torn meniscus, and well, has given me the deepest of deep tissue massages that I've ever had in my life. Terrible! Like many others I purchased a Groupon. I called in January to make an appointment, and it took them 2 weeks to return my call. When they finally called me back the earliest appointment they had was for the end of February. As the date approached I realized that I might have a schedule conflict, I called and left a message. They never called me back so I rearranged my schedule to make the appointment. I showed up an the owner had cancelled my appointment and booked another customer. She offered no apologies and said it was my fault because I left a message about possibly rescheduling. she offered to do 1 service (my Groupon was for 2) but said she couldn't schedule the second service. Bought a Living Social here and VERY disappointed with their customer service. Called for an appointment two weeks before the deal was to expire. Was told there was no availability until NEXT MONTH for weekends. Inquired about appointments during the week.... only open 9-5 during the week. Don't most of us work during those hours??? Was actually asked if I might have a vacation day I could use.... Really? Take a vacation day for a massage???? Absolutely not accomodating and rude on the phone. Totally unwilling to allow me to use the Living Social for the first available date we could schedule.
