Love this place. Dropped in for early breakfast on way out of town after night in Weed, Ca in the RV. The kind of old-time diner that's been around forever because they just consistently deliver good, classic diner/cafe food. Booths and a counter. Doesn't seat a ton of people, so you get a feeling of really mattering to these folks. Menu is what you'd expect, eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, etc turned out with no fuss, no muss by the kitchen. As with almost everyone else these days they were short-staffed in morning. But the only server there was doing heroic effort to take care of everyone, and I mean heroic. What a great example of "owners mindset". Taking care of customers like she owned the place and it was THAT important to her. At one point, I leaned across the counter to grab the coffee pot and give myself a warm-up, and rather than fussing at me, she was friendly enough to come over and tell me "you're hired" . Love it. Food was great and I enjoyed listening to the customer banter between themselves and the employees. I needed gasoline and was hungry, or thought I was. Ended up ordering the bacon cheeseburger, onion rings and a chocolate malt. That was quite nearly the best chocolate malt ever. Not super sweet, chocolate flavor was sublime and malt! Wow! Wow! It was so good. I have inadvertently stopped in Weed a couple times for a restroom break. But am pretty sure this will now be a regular stop. I ate the onion rings first. There were a ton of them. And they were really good. I was worried I would get full before I started the burger and that's exactly what happened. I ate every last one of those onion rings. Perfection! The bun on the burger was so fresh, it squished flat as I held on for dear life while driving and taking bites on the straight portions of that very curvy road headed back to Sacramento. This is not "to go" food. It is "sit and enjoy" food. My mouth is watering thinking of the wonderful flavors of that burger...bacon, lettuce tomato onion, pickles. On my way to Portland and decided to stop and support this little place. I ordered the open biscuit with sausage egg, and topped with gravy. With a side of extra crispy hash brown. Let me just say this is probably one of the best breakfast places I've been too. The is out was fluffy, and tasty, and it was light, it's not as heavy as some places, and the sausage was amazing. I read a lot of reviews about the sausage and the tellers were right! I can taste the spice which was nice. Also I asked for extra crispy hash browns and the hash browns were actually crispy! Stopped by for a bite on our way back home. It's your diner country type of resturant. Had a burger, roast dinner, CFS dinner and club sandwich. I was told by my family who got the club and burger that it was okay. Family who got the roast said it was good, but too salty. This caused him to drink a lot of water, leading to more bathroom stops than we anticipated on the road. Mine was the CFS dinner. The steak itself was okay. Not the best, but not the worst. The mashed potatoes tasted funny. It had a bitter taste to it. I only had a few bites. Friendly waitress. Was going to give them 3 stars, but decided to knock 1 star off, since they included a hidden upcharge for their CFS of $2. Likely not return unless we have no other choices. Our daughter-in-law recommended we stop here for "a proper breakfast" so we did. We were not disappointed. We went back the next day, too. The first day, I had a California omelet, some of the best hash browns I've ever had, and an English muffin. My husband had the biggest platter of biscuits and gravy I've ever seen. I should have taken the photo because my husband didn't include anything for scale. :) Everything was great. The second day, I had scrambled eggs, hash browns, and toast and my husband had the hot Italian sausage omelette, home fries/country potatoes, and toast. He was disappointed in the omelette. A common question on message boards to non-Americans is "What American experience do you miss the most?" Invariably the classic American diner is raised among the top comments. The Hi-Lo Cafe was recommended to us by friends as we were driving back to the Bay Area from Oregon. We had left early and skipped breakfast, so we were famished when we pulled into the uncertain parking lot that it shares with the hotel...I wasn't clear if the businesses were related. Everything about this place screams 'American Diner'; seating in booths, large menu with breakfast served all the time, a breakfast bar, a short order cook haggling with the waitresses. Surprisingly they had cocktails for order, but as it was before noon that wasn't the goal. Very friendly service and they were punctual with the drinks. While I was tempted to get the Eggs Benedict, I went with the classic ham and cheese omelet. The Wife had a salad and Girls had a burger and omelet. It was the perfect diner experience breakfast. Hash browns were cooked perfectly, English Muffins, and the omelet was fantastic--fluffy eggs, well-cooked and seasoned ham, and plenty of cheese. Everyone else also liked their food. Prices were within expectations, and the experience was exactly as any non-American would expect from a classic American diner. read more

Had a gift card from Hi-Lo so since I had never been there thought I would get my sick mother some food with it. Monday January 6th I ordered a Hungry Man Breakfast. thats 3 eggs hash browns biscuits and gravy. for !9.99 plus tax. The eggs and hashbrowns tasted burnt but were not burnt almost like they forgot the oil dried and fried Grosssssss.. Pulled in off the road for dinner. The kid at the registered acted all flustered and told us where to sit, placed had maybe 6 tables full. Waited. Brought menus and some water. Waited. 3 more groups were seated. Finally took our order. I had a toasted cheese with a bowl of soup. Wife had their mushroom burger. Waited. 3 other tables got their food. Waited. Ours finally showed up (total time waiting from order - 30 minutes). My grilled cheese used to be hot, but was cold. Burger was cold (as in barely luke warm) and mushrooms weren't fully cooked. No mayo, just a pile of veggies next to it. I had to finally go up ask where my soup was. $31 for this. Wasn't overly busy. Lousy service. Awful food. Nothing had any taste. We have stopped here before and enjoyed it so, we stopped again the day after Christmas. There are not many options in the town of Weed, CA and we wanted to get something to eat before we continued our journey home to Reno. This place has been here a long time and gets good reviews. We walked in and were seated right away. You could tell this was a locals place based on the interactions and conversations we saw. But it appears to get a lot of travelers as well. We were brought water and menus quickly. Our orders were taken shortly after. My wife chose Margaret's Hot Stuff breakfast burrito and I decided to get the western BBQ burger. Both items arrived in a timely manner and looked huge and delicious. My wife enjoyed her breakfast burrito and could only manage to eat half. Her only recommendation was to change the salsa brought out with the burrito. She felt the flavor tasted store bought and a fresh salsa or pico would better accompany the burrito. My burger was also tasty but did have a lot of barbecue sauce on it. Before I ate the burger, I dipped some fries in the BBQ sauce to mop some of it up. I finished the burger but left most of the fries. Overall it is a solid place to stop when traveling through. It is also cozy and clean. I am sure we will be back. read more

We ate the kitchen sink omelette and they made my son a lunch menu item despite the early morning hours which was beyond a blessing after our 13 hour car ride. The food was AMAZING! The restaurant was busy and full and we still received good service. Our server was male (bummed I don't remember his name), friendly and quick. He talked about how he understood the college students who frequent Hi Lo (to include my son) who don't have too money to tip. It was a short chat but meant a lot to me. Not only because he was being kind, but also because I know servers don't make much, and he was willing to look beyond that and still provide great service to college kids! Also, the food was well priced, they aren't kidding about the large portions and it tasted good. The waitresses are busting butt clearing/setting tables while these new boys stand around watching. Again, problems being a new owner and figuring out how to run things. This place was packed the whole time I was there, but ther wait staff acted like it was all normal. Never missing a beat, not running out of my iced tea & food received quuckly. After reading all the YELP reviews I decided to come here for dinner. While traveling to Oregon and visit my son the town of Weed was my halfway point. The minute you walk in it is obviously the happening spot in town. Full of people talking, and eating, and OMG, the smells. A very diner style feel. Traveling alone has benefits and I was able to sit at the counter instantly! They have an extensive menu and serve breakfast all day. The coffee station nearby yielded a great smell of fresh coffee beans being ground for coffee. It was evening, so I did not order a cup of jo, but I did order a cocktail. They have a few selection of premade drinks. A manhattan, margarita, and a martini. I ordered the mahattan by proxy as it was all they had, but , dang it was good! They have a menu of beers but only had a couple of selections available that evening. The food menu is on a cute newspaper that tells the story of the diner. Ok, now on to the food. I orderd the french dip, which came on sourdough, not a roll. They were out of rolls, but the waiter offered me my choice of bread and an opportunity to change my order if I wanted. I chose the sourdough bread. The sandwich was good and satisfied my craving for a delicous beefy treat. The au jus had an excellent beef flavor that I wanted to drink it. lol, but seriously, a yummy sammy. The french fries were nice and crispy and hot. The food isn't fancy, but it is good. And the atmosphere is really welcoming. The wait is worth it too. I didn't leave room for pie, but you should. It looked delicous. If you happen to come through this town come here! We are always in a huge rush when we go through Weed, either on our way to Oregon or back home. Today we were finally taking a more leisurely pace home and decided to stop for lunch. Of course, I consulted Yelp and this place popped up. I'm a vegetarian so my options are usually limited but when I saw the huge menu I figured there would be options. There were a few, and also a salad bar. The whole way there my husband and I said we were in the mood for salad. Instead he ended up getting the mushroom burger and I ordered a patty melt with a Gardenburger. I had planned to get a side salad but the lure of onion rings was just too strong. I mean, I can make a salad at home. The patty melt was delicious, with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese. I went with sourdough as I'm not a fan of rye (I actually detest caraway seeds). The onion rings were those nice, fat crispy onion rings with crunchy panko breading. So good. We finished everything. Service was great even though it was busy. We will be back the next time we're in town. Maybe we'll finally get salads. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find such a gem while driving near Mount Shasta. For me, a few key factors make or break a restaurant experience, and this place checks all the boxes. 1. Cleanliness: From the laminated menus to the bathrooms, everything was spotless, which is always a great sign. 2. Menu Variety: The menu offers a wide range of options, including (if I counted correctly) seven different types of pies! That's impressive for a roadside café. 3. Food Quality: They clearly put effort into making sure their guests leave happy. The omelets, benedicts, and especially the New York steak were delicious. I highly recommend to try the steak! 4. Service: The service was quick, friendly, and professional. If you visit, ask for Stella--she's fantastic and won't let you down. 5. Parking: Conveniently located next to a motel, there's plenty of parking available, which is a nice plus. I was looking forward to enjoying the logger burger. It has been a few years since I was there. It was awful. Different bread, lower grade hamburger, smaller patty, and tooo many additions that did not compliment each other. When I asked for some Ranch dressing for my fries, they did not have any. The garlic fries were terrible too. They had jarred garlic and not fresh garlic and did not even smell like garlic! The service was excellent. Friendly and helpful. Very accommodating. It looked about the same as it had a few years ago. Friendly and inviting except for the huge bar in the back room. It seemed sorta out of place. I will not be back ever again. If you're going through Weed and you need to eat, this is the place to go! Stopped and got a breakfast. This place is very cleaned and well maintained which is always a good indication of how much they care about their business and reputation. Food was good, had the corned beef hash and eggs. Not a canned corned beef, asked for my hash browns extra crispy and they delivered! It's a small thing but I always ask for extra crispy at restaurants and I only get it about 1/2 the time. The server was super nice and she was hustling around that whole place and kept my coffee full, checked on me the appropriate amount of time and still had time to chat. She was awesome.
