Wine tasting was not on the menu today but here we are.... The winery itself is tucked deep within the many vineyards of Lodi. It's a very simple and inviting winery. Very bird-friendly; you can hear the birds chirping away. I love it! They have bird houses and hummingbird feeders hanging throughout the trees. The service was wonderful. Very friendly and social--which I love to see at wineries. Their wines are very good. I'm not a big fan of white wines, but I figured I'd try their white and rosé wines. I'll try their red blends the next time we visit. With that being said, I recommend their wines and if you are able to, I would definitely go visit their winery so you can enjoy their wines while relaxing and listening to the birds. read more

Day 3 Stop 4 Preface: We stopped in on a day when a fund raiser for the school system in Lodi was going on with their silent auctions, live music and entertainment. Heritage Oak Winery is a family run vineyard and winery. The property is aligned with a river I think leaving an all day affair at Heritage a good excursion. OK! No oak tree! BUT they do have a fig tree shaped to give you shade in the day where at least half a dozen picnic tables are situated. You can eat your snacks and taste your wines under this fig tree and if your timing works, you can pick the fig and take them with you OR eat them right there. During our visit, the owner passed and offered little shopping bags if you wanted to pick and take the fig with you. How sweet is that? We love everything about Tom & Carmela's winery. The minute you arrive you are greeted with a smile and friendly hello!! They make you feel welcomed. We love walking around the property and admiring their beautiful flowers & birds. Their wines are delicious and they have a great variety to choose from as well. We visited as part of our annual Post-Christmas wine tasting event and the wines were wonderful! They accommodated our crazy group of 17 people in an outdoor location that gave us a view of the farm, but we were busy enjoying our time together. I wasn't the biggest fan of their wine, however this is definitely a unique experience. Sat outside and tasted 15 different wines, all great quality, there are a bunch of variations on similar ideas. You likely will find something you like. The property is very humble, feels like going to your grandma's ranch. The owners are so nice, Carmela is just the nicest lady you'll meet and Tom is in it for the art. They were selling some of their land so tractors were causing a dirt storm next to us, but it didn't ruin the vibes. This place is special, I enjoyed the JB4 blend. read more

Tastes can differ, but their Vino Tinto red is my favorite wine in the world, It fits my mouth perfectly. It is also very reasonable priced (under $20) and would command a much higher price in a more populous area but the Hoffmans are not interested in expanding. read more

This was the first winery we tried in the Lodi area this Saturday October 16th celebrating our anniversary. We tasted outside and the service was ok. Maybe they thought that this was our first time wine tasting, but we mistakenly believed that the galvanized bucket they provided the wines in was a dump bucket, as other wineries usually bring the dump bucket along with the wines for a flight. When she came back when we were done, she was furious and loudly said we should have told her we needed a dump bucket and stayed mad at us not making contact, but kept having this mad face. Was so not impressed with that type of service. Not going to say who it was, since that person will know by hopefully reading this review and hopefully change her attitude and next time specify to people so there are no issues. Nothing really stood out to us at this one, but we bought a few bottles of what we kind of liked, like their Malbec. Their wines are really earthy and some people like that but we don't because to us they kind of tasted all the same. The young woman who helped us with our purchase was nice and congratulated us. Needless to say though, the experience with the other woman was about to ruin our experience in the Lodi area, but every single winery we hit after this first one was a hit! Everyone was kind and wines were great at those places. Who knows, maybe that lady was having a bad day or something even though she was real friendly at first until the great wine incident of 2021 happened! read more

Heritage Oak is a no frills winery with some lovely grounds. There is a $10 tasting fee which is waived with purchase. They have a robust list of well made wine. Wines are reasonable priced and range from some crisp whites, to bold Zinfandel and some blends. COVID-related: I wore my mask when I went into the tasting room initially to check in, but they were doing tastings out back outside. The pours all came in little glass bottles in a cute bucket + 1 wine glass, and you serve yourself. People weren't generally masked, but it was outside, so I felt comfortable with it. The serve-yourself system was cute (and I assume a COVID thing?). Some context: I'm from out of town (Bay Area), and I'm by no means a wine expert. I was looking for a peaceful place for a New Year's weekend getaway, and I ended up in Lodi. I had read about Heritage Oak's trail on their property, and they were open NYE, so I dropped by. And it was glorious. I had just come from another winery, and I had a bit of an awkward experience there tasting as a single, solo taster. I knew it might be a bit awkward solo, but I was looking for an activity that paired well with some time outdoors and a good book. The woman working at Heritage Oak (so sorry I didn't catch her name!) was super sweet and friendly, without being overly bubbly or fake. Kind and attentive, but seemed to know I was looking for some quiet respite. She suggested either the 2nd or 3rd flight, and I picked the 2nd since I knew Lodi was known for Zins. And I think Heritage Oak's Zins converted me from being a "mostly white wines" person, to a full-fledged "red wine is the best" person! The 2019 Bartlam was primarily fruit-forward with a nice balance of acidity, loose on tannins (that kind of numb feeling with some red wines), and very quaffable (a wine word I learned recently that I love; what a classy way of saying "drinkable"). I got a bottle. The 2019 Zinhead was nice, too--I forgot which other Zin she said it was a blend with, but it also had a hint of Petit Syrah. The Petit Syrah made it inkier (which if you don't know wine, like me, I think it felt denser, darker, more serious?).L and smooth. Also got a bottle of this one. The other Zins were all nice, too--2018 Zinfidelity was a great opener (very fruit-forward, almost like grape juice in a good way), 2019 Block 14 was a bit too grippy on the tannins for me personally, and 2019 Block 5 was definitely spicy as advertised, quite peppery. They weren't too busy (just me and one other party almost the entire time), so I felt comfortable and relaxed and able to read my book in peace. I also walked the trail, which was absolutely beautiful. Make sure you sign in at the front desk so they can give you a map and know you're out there. The bathroom was a porta potty at the moment, although I think that might be a COVID thing, since I saw a bathroom sign on the building as well. I'm no snob, and the porta potty even had a little sink and hand sanitizer, so that was fine for me. The trail definitely sealed the deal for me--I'll be back, maybe with friends next time, and I'd love to picnic at one of the many picnic benches along the trail. read more

After a short visit to mega-winery Viaggio (NOT recommended), we were looking for a more authentic winetasting experience without all the noise and mediocrity. We randomly chose Heritage Oak Winery from the signs they have in the Lodi area to direct you to the different wineries. It was a bit off the beaten path but worth the visit. Small and family-owned, the hosts were gracious, friendly, and inviting. The atmosphere was a lovely garden area between the residence and the tasting room. Dog-friendly, peaceful, and nice wines. We loved all the hummingbirds and butterflies. The hostess made recommendations for other wineries in the area to visit. The winetasting style in Lodi seems to be a lot different than our experience in Amador and Calaveras counties. I think it's a COVID precaution. read more

Livin' la Vida LoCa! That would be Lodi California in general and Heritage Oak Winery in particular. Who knew? Our Earthwatch Group stopped her yesterday to take soil samples and to taste wine using a special "swirl" test, in which the resulting consumption would help Save the Planet! We had a great time and our Host Tom Hoffman couldn't have been nicer (and more talented when he was playing the piano in the Tasting Room). We had the chance to walk the extended grounds the Heritage Oak Vineyards, which included nice Mokelumne River views, pretty picnic areas, serene surroundings, interesting plants and birds, and a great friendly dog that spent a lot of time making sure that we were "herded" properly. The Wine (made from locally grown grapes) was also very good. You get 5 free tastes and I had to choose carefully as the selection was impressive and really interesting. I'm not sure when I might be in the LoCa again, and when I am I'll make darn sure that Heritage Oak is one of the must stops. read more

An intimate winery. I do not have the palate for wine, my lose so, designated driver at your service. I love wineries because they are always pretty, inviting and just plain relaxing. Heritage Oaks fits the bill. The owner Tom greeted us right away. He even played the piano for us. There are bird walks and you can take a 15 minute walk to the river. Hubby and friends loved the wine and all bought a bottle each. Lots of seating and picnic tables. Check it out. read more

Visiting Lodi from Bend, Oregon. Enjoyed visiting with owner Tom, while hearing about the different varietals and the harvesting methods. Large menu take your pick of what you'd like to try. We like reds so tried several and purchased a few bottles to take with us. Nice patio that you can sit outside and enjoy a glass. We took a stroll down past the vineyards to the river where they offer tent camping on property and have a picnic area by the river. They are also Harvest Hosts offering free RV camping out back. Surprise! You might have to ask, but you might get a piano concert while wine tasting. The owner is a classical pianist and harpsichordist. He has a mini mini shiny black grand piano (looks slightly larger than a harpsichord) and will sit down and play with very little prodding. He's good. The tasting room is in the barn out back, surrounded by gracious old oaks and the vineyards. But as expected, the piano and wine bar are kept warm and cozy in the cold weather. Mr. B chose a Tempranillo to buy. A fun place to go. A beautiful spot to be in the late fall with all the colorful leaves fluttering to the ground. read more

I really liked their chardonnay, but LOVED both of their dessert wines (Zinnisimo and Solera). This winery gets 5 stars strictly for the ambiance and proximity to a river. We purchased a bottle of wine to take to the picnic areas by the river. They packaged it up in a carrying case w/ opener and glasses at no extra cost, gave us a map of the property, and sent us on our way. We walked down to the beach area which is about 10-30min on a nearly flat trail. At the end the beach on the riverbank is quiet, serene, scenic, and perfect for a romantic picnic. read more

They also let you get 10% off with Yelp checkin but I forgot to ask. Heritage Oak is inside a warehouse but they make it really cozy with the decor. There's even a piano inside. They make a really good Grenache. Staff is very friendly and they do speak to you about the wine. There were regulars there, wine club members, when we visited who were sitting outside by the picnic area. It was a beautiful day just to be in this area. The owners have a dog that runs around the area... super cute!! They have water bowls around for other pets too. We were happy here, including our dog. read more

A group of us, 15 to be exact, wine tasted here during the Lodi Wine and Chocolate tasting event. We were so impressed with just about everything! The barn turned tasting room had a lot of charm. The patio accommodated quite a few people which is where we listened to a trio of men (group name unknown) playing some great tunes we could enjoy. This pet friendly place offered a candy table with several selections, a for purchase kettle corn tent, food tent (hamburgers) and a boutique. Very clean, large and maintained restroom. And if that wasn't enough of a bargain, the friendly owners offered their tasty, fresh picked oranges to anyone who wanted them. Although they had very good wines, my favorite was the Block 14 Zin. I couldn't leave this place without a bottle. Definitely coming back for more! read more

Heritage Oak Winery is off the main path in the Lodi Wine Region, but it is worth a stop. The winery has a nice tasting room with lots of outside seating. The tasting bar has a rather extensive selection of wine available for tasting, but I was not really impressed by most of the options. Lots of good wines, but few great wines. They seemed a bit stronger on the whites instead of the reds. Staff was decent, but the tasting experience was not as intimate as at other wineries. I think everyone should visit all the wineries in Lodi. Everyone has a different palate and can appreciate the nuances of each offering. read more

Tom Hoffman and his wife Carmela not only produce five star wines and value prices but the feel to a visit is more like a family member stopping but their house than a customer shopping for a product. Tom always makes time to talk wine or music or farming (if these subjects interest you - they do me!) and frequently he will invite you to the barrel room for a quick taste of whatever new wines he is working on. They frequently offer free wine club events and other public events on occasion as well. One of my favorite summer events is their "Stress Release" evenings where they pair dessert, wine, music and an amazing orchestra of hundreds of hummingbirds on their patio.
