I was very happy that it came with raw horseradish since that isn't readily available most places. I enjoyed their seasonal blackened shrimp pasta. I had their house beer, because I am a sucker for anything that is unique to a location. It was a little hoppy for my taste, but there wasn't much of a description on what kind of beer it was when I ordered it. The American wheat I had the second round was much more my taste. It was late so Chris and I decided to eat before checking in to our hotel. This building is neat and looked like it had a lot of history. We sat at the bar to avoid the 30-minute wait as they were very busy. We decided on the Duo Dinner which was actually a bargain for a four-course meal for two! We enjoyed and devoured everything! Came for a private event -a weekday lunch and learn. Found the experience a pleasant one. The private room was set up well and the timing was flawless. Our speaker said we'd expect salad at a certain time and our entrees at another certain time and they were both delivered exactly on time to a room full of people. My steak medallion was hot and cooked the perfect medium rare, though the bacon wrap was soggy and I didn't eat it. Mashed potatoes and side carrots were also hot and tasty. We went to the Hereford House on Midland for my birthday dinner last night and once again, they knocked it out of the park! Hereford always has the feel of a great steakhouse, and they live up to that. I love the "cowboy chic" theme of the restaurant. Our waitress was great and even brought an unexpected dessert for my birthday. She was awesome. The food is always the star here. No one in Kansas City beats the 1957 Salad. The in-house cheese and garlic dressings (pink and yellow dressings) are the best. I always recommend getting both. Then I got the perfectly prepared Prime Rib. Again, maybe the best in town. Update: I was messaged by the Hereford House, asked if I wanted to talk about what happened, and I responded yes. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. Can you say "MOOO?" The Hereford House does not live up to its reputation. I ordered a med. rare steak and it came to me so raw that it was mooing. A person at my table also ordered a med. rare steak and it was perfect. Inconsistent at best. The server saw my steak, agreed and apologized, then took it back to the kitchen to be re-fired. It came back to me rare, not medium rare. By this time, everyone else at my table was nearly done with their meal. Frustrated, I sent everything back on my plate and told them to keep it. The manager stopped by and asked if everything was okay. I told her that she needed to do better. It's hard to believe they stay in business. BTW, nothing got comped for my "nothing burger" meal. Will I ever go back? No. Would I suggest this place to my friends and family? No. P.S. I went to Rye in Leawood later that night and the food and service were superb. Disappointing. My husband and I just returned home from dinner at the Hereford House in Shawnee. We've been there several times, but the last few times something has been disappointing. This evening was the final straw. I ordered a 12 oz. Rib Eye, medium rare. The first one brought to me was medium well. Way too done. We confirmed I did order medium rate not medium well. The steak was returned to the kitchen for a redo. The next steak came out with about half being thicker, so an acceptable medium rare (dark pink in the center) the other half of my steak was grey all the way through. Again over cooked. This is totally unacceptable for a $55 steak. I grudgingly accepted it only because I was very hungry and my husband was almost finished with his meatloaf. I saw the managers walking around outside of the room we were in, but neither came over to get more information about the problem. Apparently they don't care enough to find out the issue so they can update the training of their kitchen staff. I only cared about getting what I'm paying for. I wanted nothing else than to know they were aware a problem existed and fix it so other guests don't feel as disappointing as I do. Too many other truly good steak houses in KC in the same price range. We'll go elsewhere next time. read more

Went here for a date night and honestly, was pleasantly surprised. The service was was a little slow at the beginning but the food came out pretty quickly. You're given a soft honey white bread to start and this was absolutely delicious. I wish my meal consisted of this bread only, it was really good! (I usually don't rave about the complimentary bread but this was definitely good.) When trying a new restaurant, I always opt to order two appetizers.. guess it's just a tradition. Order the calamari, for sure! Usually, calamari is hit or miss and a lot places can't perfect the texture. The texture of this calamari was amazing. Tasted really good, the spicy marinara definitely added to the taste. I would order this every time. The crab cakes... go ahead and skip out on ordering this. The taste wasn't too bad but came out cold and the aioli that came with the crab cakes was personally too pungent and tart; would've preferred a milder taste on the garlic (usually i am a HUGE fan of garlic) but the aioli really doesn't pair well with the taste of these crab cakes specifically. Salmon - VERY good, mashed potatoes.. strange texture almost "gooey", i skipped out on eating this. Can't go wrong with broccoli, this was just okay. 1000 ticket and food took over 1.5 hours after the order to arrive for birthday for 85 year old grandmother- despite having few tables to wait-made absolutely no sense. Grandma wasn't able to walk out of restaurant 3 hours later without 2 people under each arm... and of course no concern from anyone and the manager standing right there. The $4 charge for the birthday grandma was the extra bonus and no apologies from the manager on duty whatsoever. Update. Decided to use the gift card HH gave us due to our last experience being less than expected. No reservation, got there and they were busy due to Homecoming. Was told initially that the wait would be most likely an hour. We were not in a hurry so told them we would wait. Also I know most places exaggerate wait times. The hostess was very attentive to us keeping us updated and the wait time turned out to be 10 mins! Great start. Ironically we were seated at the same exact table with the same server as last time. BTW, although there were some short comings in our server last time, she was still a very pleasant and nice person. I ordered the Grilled Meatloaf dinner with mashed potatoes and string beans. My wife ordered the Short Rib Tacos with string beans on the side. Our server brought us hot bread and butter, delicious, while we waited for our dinners. I like the honey butter. Our dinners came and they were both absolutely delicious!! I really like the smoked flavor that results from grilling the meatloaf. it was a generous serving topped with a brown beef sauce. The short rib tacos were stuffed with meat, pickled onions and cilantro, then deep fried. The shells were a little greasy as a result of frying but crisp and delicious non the less. We both had leftovers. (It was fun seeing the Homecoming kids and their dates, dressed up and funny at the same time. The girls all were wearing tight dresses with high hems and due to being self-conscious constantly pulling up the fronts to ensure they were covered and at the same time pulling down their hems to ensure their rear was covered, lol. Yikes - I'm sure Hereford House could get some great reviews, but that was not our experience today. First - for the good stuff - I'm not one for meatloaf, but it was pretty enjoyable! And the cowboy/rancher theme of the restaurant was fun. We were seated very quickly (at lunch time). For a few cons... I haven't had that poor of service for a very long time. Which is pretty unfortunate since it pretty much broke our experience. With two adults and one toddler, I didn't think it was much to ask for some kind of non-ceramic container for him to eat from. I had to convince our server of the idea for a to-go container instead of a plate, for which I got a few strange looks. And again, the same look of confusion or disbelief when I inquired about the sauces they add to the meatloaf (to see if I wanted them placed on the side). Our server wasn't familiar enough with the menu descriptions to answer my questions and just kept repeating the same answer over again. It kind of got awkward... Then when we wanted to use a $10 off $20 discount card, two rules popped up as to why we couldn't use the card with what we had purchased. After having a manager visit our table, and another round of excuses were made, the issue was finally resolved. I doubt we'd ever chance our time and money at Hereford House again. :( read more

2nd restaurant week dining. Hereford House off Midland & 435 is conveniently located with plenty of private parking. Promptly seated and drinks promptly served. Great 'restaurant week' menu with the steakburger being my favorite. This isn't your fast food dining, so had to wait awhile for the burger, but the result was a juicy(not too juicy) very delicious and per the pic(s) a hearty burger. $15 for burger, fries & fudge brownie (+2.50 for iced tea), this was a very positive experience. This is the best location, so much better than the others it's like a different restaurant. Happy hour is one of the best in town and is a must do. If you need a group room for a meal for your organization, they are really one of the best. Food is excellent, staff are friendly and very accommodating. The steaks that we had were cooked perfectly medium rare to medium and my wife's pork chops were awesome. The only reason that I didn't give them five stars is that the portions were small for the price we paid. My filet was almost $40 for a 7 oz filet and my sons kids meal was $18 for a kids steak. It's a shame to say that the quality of Hereford House's food has gone way down. It used to be a nice place to eat about 5-10 years ago. I've been there twice in the last several months, so I can safely say that it wasn't just an 'off night.' Their steaks are still good, but don't bother with their wine, shrimp cocktail, salad, fish entrees, or side dishes besides the mashed potatoes. I ordered their new sesame-honey marinated cod with rice and veggies. The fish was inedible (overcooked, poor quality, poorly seasoned...), and the sauce was gross. The veggies and rice were also really bad as well. All of it was so terrible, I ended up eating some of my husband's filet and mashed potatoes. My dad ordered the same thing, and also agreed that it was bad and barely ate it. I think our server noticed, but didn't say anything. We didn't want to cause a problem since it was a relative's birthday, so we basically just waited to leave. The servers here are good, it's not their fault- but whoever is back there cooking...I think I could do a better job, and I have no culinary training whatsoever. Won't be back. read more

My wife is a sucker for the 50s Cosmopolitan, starring raspberry instead of cranberry, and gin over vodka. Matters not, because this is a beauty of a drink and goes down nicely. I have vacillated between the Smoked Old-Fashioned, featuring Four Roses bourbon (not high-end but still fabulous) and the Barrel-Aged Roman Roads, which is rye with a ginger syrup - so delish! The old-fashioned hits your nose with the smoke but settles the sweetness on your palate in a nice mix. The rye and whiskey together with the ginger adds just the right spice for any pairing. I highly suggest the spinach/artichoke dip, which is accompanied by a bounty of crostini, and *may* have you scooping the last remnants from the bowl. Also noteworthy is the crispy pork belly app, replete with a bacon jam and housemade cornbread. Your conversation is likely to come to a halt as you shove either of these delicious choices into your mouth, repeatedly. Want to go for more than an appetizer? Check the happy hour meal choices and as silly as it sounds ( it IS a steakhouse, after all), you may not find a better burger patty anywhere at this time of the day. A blend of ground sirloin and ribeye comes armed with cheese and more for under $10. And that right there is a hidden benefit: you can get in and out of happy hour here for under $50 easily, with noshables, artisan drinks, and beer/wine. The Hereford House is a mixed bag of history and tradition, some of it brings back warm memories of my childhood in Kansas City, and some of it is a sad tale of arson and heartbreak at seeing images of the original quintessential KC Steakhouse reduced to a pile of ashes. Fortunately, just like Kansas City, the restaurant has survived (although the original location was never rebuilt after the fire in 2008) and continues to thrive today. Since we returned to KC after leaving the area for the past 15 years, we've been to the Shawnee location twice in the past 3 months. Both visits were very similar - good experiences, but not the type that will continue to grow the legend of this once undeniably great establishment. To begin, the steaks are good, cooked over charcoal, but I think the quality of the meat leaves a little to be desired. The meat can be a little tough in some places, but very tender with great charcoal flavor in other bites. My wife's 16 oz Ribeye (she wanted a big one so she could have leftovers for another meal) was ordered medium, but served on the low side of medium rare. The baked potato was perfect, soft and fluffy, with very generous portions of butter, cheese, and sour cream. She also ordered asparagus which was served crispy (I prefer my vegetables to be fully cooked and soft, but I realize most nicer restaurants don't serve them this way) but they also tasted very good. I ordered Country Fried Steak - they serve it cut in two pieces, both of them individually hand breaded with some of the lightest breading I've ever had on a Country Fried Steak. It was flaky with layers that seemed to soak up the delicious gravy. My mashed potatoes had a whipped texture and good flavor, served with green beans. The complimentary bread was white with a firm texture, larger and heavier than your typical diner dinner roll, but it didn't have a crunchy exterior like Italian bread. The bread was served with whipped butter that was room temperature soft. Another thing that annoys me about most nicer restaurants is their habit of serving cold butter. How am I supposed to spread cold butter on my bread? Thank you Hereford House for knowing I want soft butter. Our server was great, answering our questions about the menu and never letting our glasses become empty or a dirty dish to be left on our table. They operate with good teamwork too, as other employees stopped by our table a few times to pick up a dish or ask us how we were enjoying our dinner. 15-25 years ago, when someone said "Kansas City Steakhouse" there is little doubt that Hereford House was the first thing to pop into your mind. (Or, maybe The Golden Ox.) I don't know if Hereford House will ever regain their former glory, but it's still an enjoyable experience and worth a visit. read more
