They came as my wife was leaving for work . She asked them if they wouldn't mind just doing the outside doors first . As all the door handles needed fixing she said my husband is 15 mins away please wait before going in our house . They entered or house moments later (we have cameras) they them open every door in our 3 bedroom apt . They checked doors that never needed to be open. I walked in the house to find them working on the last of 4 doors . Asked them why they didn't wait for me and the two men said my wife never told them to not go in . I then called my wife on speaker phone she again stated and described then man she said it to and he basically called her a liar then they both walked out never finishing the 4th door. They left wood shavings everywhere and we're completely rude and Unapologetic. 2 cats were displaced in all this we found them in rooms which they shouldn't have been . All of this could of been avoided by calling ahead instead of randomly showing up . Then illegally entering our apartment. There's work orders and a police report to prove my statements. My first problem: I needed a lock on a patio door. I tried two other locksmiths before calling Bill. One diagnosed the problem via photos and arrived with the wrong part completely. Then he said that I needed to replace the whole door. The other locksmith said, "No, sorry" over the phone. Bill diagnosed the problem and explained what caused it. This door opens from the inside by pushing *UP* on the handle, not down, as usual. Someone got desperate and took a pair of pliers to the lock, which was in bad shape. I needed this repair very quickly, and Bill sent for the part by next day air. He offered to install it on THE SAME DAY that the lock arrived. That's really going above and beyond. My second problem: I had a padlock with no key. Bill took care of the padlock no problem. He sold me a new padlock and key ID rings at a price that was more than reasonable. His shop had all kinds of padlocks and all kinds of key IDs, and I'm sure that would be true with anything I wanted. My third problem: try as I might, I could not get the aged shower curtain rings (four kinds) off of the tenant's rod. I honestly thought it needed a bolt cutter. Bill took me seriously, agreed to come after his normal working hours, and easily removed the shower curtain rings by hand. I was so embarrassed, but Bill was kind. He wasn't even going to charge, and then his price was not anything close to a locksmith's hourly fee. Bill was always on time, always agreeable. He knows what he's doing. He doesn't put on any airs. He's salt of the earth and utterly reliable. His shop has longevity. He is a real contributor to the community in Arlington. read more

My mother was having trouble locking her Anderson door and my brother called Herb's Locksmith. Anderson doors are notorious for getting out of alignment, but its really not a lock issue so I kind of wondered why my brother arranged for a locksmith. The locksmith arrived & checked it out & told her there was no problem with the lock & didn't charge for his time, although he was well within his rights to do so. He even called my brother (who had arranged the appointment) to explain things. In short, all we have to do is adjust the door to be in alignment. Thank you Herb's Locksmith. We needed to have a doorknob reattached. Bill was on time (and wore a mask) and easily handled the problem and tightened another knob while he was here. Always nice when the neighborhood locksmith solves a problem for $6 when it might have cost $100 otherwise. I'd submitted a Yelp request for quotes to get into a locked file cabinet at my co-working space (I'd lost the key). One asked for my number so they could call and follow up, then never called. One gave me an estimate of $90 that didn't seem like it was based on anything. A third asked for more information and seemed the best of the bunch, but their estimate was $112. So I decided to walk over to Herb's. Gave the guy all the info I had about the cabinet and the lock, and he was straightforward that they'd try to create the right key but it might not work, or at least it might take more than one try. I called Herb's Locksmith at 3:36pm after accidentally locking myself out of my condo. I was told that someone could be to my place in about 30 minutes. An hour later, no one had come. I tried calling Herb's to get an update multiple times, but no one answered the phone. After 5pm, I heard from them saying he could be here next, but I had already made alternative arrangements, as I have to work at 6pm. I think it's incredibly unprofessional to not hear from them in an hour an a half (three times longer than their estimated arrival) and not have a way to get in touch with them. My business had some trouble when the inside had a piece of nail sticking up. Therefore pushing the door in from outside was impossible. We had a back door but didn't have a key. We had Customers was waiting for us from outside too. So we decided to call here and the guy came within 10 mins. And got it fixed within 5 mins! We even changed the key. Herb's changed the locks for us when we moved into our new house, and since then have also fixed a couple of broken door locks for us. They do excellent work for honest prices and I recommend them without reservation. The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars is that it can be hard to pin them down on a precise appointment time for non-emergency work, so I have to work at home all day if I need them to come out -- it's a very old-school operation in that way. Yes, they can seem a little crusty on the outside, but they have been in business a very long time and they know their stuff. Lots of my Arlington neighbors rely on Herb's. read more

I called Herb's when I thought I had lost the keys to a small portable safe. I had called a different locksmith in Waltham who told me it would cost $175 (!!!) to drill it open, but Herb's just told me to bring the safe into the shop and he would charge me $20 to open it up and make new keys.
