I used the East Coast web page to make an appointment early Friday evening. Tim came to my home as promised at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday to make a new key for my 18 year old BMW convertible. Two weeks prior, I had asked a BMW dealership to do the same for me, but when they quoted $1080, I said "forget it." Tim's van is like a library of key parts, a computer controlled key cutter and loads of techie devices and software. In just a short while, Tim had re-birthed a brand new BMW key fob that was perfectly programmed for keyless entry and ignition start. He also cut a new (metal) key that was a part of the BMW electronic fob (years ago) that opens the driver's door lock. Ended up being more expensive than going to the VW dealer for my extra key. They had trouble with the software and they kept at it even though I had to take the car back three times as they figured it out and got new software etc. I appreciated the effort but when it ended up costing more than the dealer in the end I was disappointed. read more

I see that the owner attempted to respond to my review. But not really. First, I didn't quarrel with the price quoted at the store. My complaint, rather, is that I was quoted a much lower price when I called, and I was NOT told that the price was only an estimate. East Coast's conduct smacks of bait and switch. Second, the rudeness was not the bait and switch. Rather, the rudeness was quite literally their rude, hostile demeanor. Even if they weren't going to honor the price they quoted me over the phone, they could have apologized for not having said that it was an estimate, not a fixed quotation. Third, I don't know where the owner gets $375 as the dealer price. Cityside Subaru priced the key replacement at $300. But this still misses the point. East Coast Chip is entitled to charge whatever they want. The reasons I strongly advise against patronizing them are, first, if they won't honor their word regarding pricing, I'm not confident about their reliability generally. Second, I don't enjoy dealing with rude people. If I had to choose, in fact, I'd pay a little more for a friendly transaction. read more

Friendly and Efficient! Be mindful that they require an appointment to be made online in this time of COVID and it was incredibly efficient. I waited a bit while they wrapped up another customer but ultimately was a quoted a more then fair price to have two keyless fobs copied from my original one. Great price, great service. I bought a used car which only came with one key, so I looked around for getting a duplicate made. The dealership price was $300. The price at East Coast Chip Keys was only $130 (plus tax). I arrived early and they agreed to see me early since they didn't have an appointment before mine. The man I saw was very polite and even showed me how to use my car's emergency key and center console transmitter spot to get into my car and get it running in case the key battery failed, which was far from obvious without someone showing how to do it. The key I've used for 7 yrs stopped working but the other copy was fine. My 2007 Subaru's key has a computer chip in its head, so can only be reproduced by someone with the correct equipment to recode ALL the existing keys as well as a new one. I first called the dealer: they said $50 for a new key plus $42 for reprogramming all of them. They said "no one else can do this, only us." I knew that was not true, but that I needed to find a competent locksmith who knew what he was doing. I picked East Coast Chip Keys because: - They ONLY do automotive and motorcycle keys, so it was a good bet they knew what they were doing. - He was a AAA auto club certified locksmith. - When I called and described what I needed, he quoted me $27 less (and the key itself was only $10 of that price). - He was going to be at his storefront in Arlington, where I was going anyway, at a time I could get there. My experience: He did things the right way (e.g., cut the key from the code, not from tracing the other key), tested all the keys after recoding, took cash, check, or credit card, and verified my ID to make sure I wasn't stealing the car! read more

Two polar opposite customer service experiences 1) Amazing responsiveness to the difficult situation of losing the only set of keys to my car, parked in Central Parking at Logan, and yes, on a Saturday. The key guy showed up, went directly to my car and by the time I arrived to meet him, had already programmed a new, identical, totally functional key to my Ford Fiesta. 2) On the less glowing side - two days later, the replacement key showed up on my dashboard alert as "Low key battery." For $330, I'm thinking, the new one should have a totally charged battery. Not a big deal, but I drove to their shop to a) get a replacement battery; and 2) have a duplicate key made. 3) Highly negative service experience a. Starting with, the address on the receipt is for an address on Mass Ave in Arlington, and their offices are in Belmont. b. The guy in the office basically told me that a) he didn't know how to replace the battery, b) he didn't think they had a duplicate key on the premises; and c) that I needed to get out of the garage and go wait in my car while he looked for a replacement. In answer to my asking how long did he thought it would take to program the replacement, he refused to give an answer. 4) Net net - if you happen to need a replacement set of keys for your key-less car, for far less than you would pay the manufacturer, you can get new keys, FAST. If you go to their storefront in Belmont, the customer service is at a different level. read more

i FOUND EAST.COAST TO BE THE BEST PLACE FOR FOB REPAIRS AND KEYS: 3RD OR 4TH time I have used them and could not be any happier; they are fast, efficient, and very reasonable for their work; I had 2 key fobs repaired; my automatic door opener was acting up; got that fixed also and out of there for less than $25.00. They are nice, accurate and tell you the truth when dealing with a part of your car that can be expensive. They will be busy but they are wroth the wait. Don't pay a ton of money at the dealer. I got home yesterday and realized I had lost the key to our second car. Its better than losing it on the road and being stuck, but still an expensive lesson for being clumsy. I looked up a few places and checked out the reviews. East Coast Chip Keys was ten minutes away, cheaper than the dealer (event the one I called in NH). I made an appointment, Tim and his associate were there.. he took me right away. I sat on a nice bench outside and waited about 30 minutes as things were taken care off. Price exactly as quoted on the phone. I'd like to ad that after reading a few of the bad reviews... they are clearly fake. Work is done by appointment (easy enough to pick up the phone), I got a spot right out front, there are places to walk if I wanted to get something to eat... and Tim was very professional. Stopped in to this place when I lost my car keys (I had one back up but needed more than one set). So glad I didn't get it done at the hardware store! Prompt service while I waited even though I didn't have an appointment, and the price was half of what the hardware store was going to charge me. He said he would be there at 2pm. I got to my car early somehow so did he. We met at 1:24pm, in less than 25 minutes I had a valet and a key fob made. Vehicle entry was included in the key cost. Also the price was my original quote plus like less than $5 of taxes/fees. No bait and switch. I wished I called him the moment I knew my keys were gone. I would recommend everyone put the number for East Coast chip keys in their phone if you have a car. I paid $125 less than I would have paid a dealer and I basically got the valet key for free as it is part of their deal. If your locked out, don't have or lost your keys, and need a fobreplacement fob this business is your solution. Yelp gives you up to 11 price estimates for the region. There are only like 2 businesses (East Coast Chip and Boston Car Keys) that really provide this service most of the rest are scams or business that have more residential locksmith applications. read more

Update on East Coast Chip keys: I had a great experience getting a replacement chip key when this company was in Arlington 2 years ago and wrote them a good review. I thought the service was great and so was the price. Three months ago the key fob button that unlocks the car (and the alarm!) stopped working so I went back (followed them to Belmont when they moved from Arlington) and the young guy there repaired it while I waited and again I was a happy customer. Last week the button stopped working again so yesterday I took the fob back to them to find out if they could fix it and had a HORRIBLE experience that ruined my day. The owner was there this time ( I don't think he could possibly be the same guy as in Arlington) and it felt like he just didn't want to hear about the problem and I didn't really understand why. I didn't have the receipt with me for the original work but I said I could come back with it. And the young guy who did the work was there and I'm sure they have the interaction in their records. Anyway, I just wanted to know if it was repairable and I couldn't get a clear answer to any question, partially because he wouldn't let me finish a sentence without interrupting me. I felt like he was accusing me of trying to cheat them somehow. It was bizarre. After about 2 minutes of his disrespectful, insulting (and perplexing to me) behavior, he accused _me_ of having attitude and told me to leave!! Maybe he was having a bad day and I just walked into the middle of it but being rude and insulting to customers is no way to run a business. read more

50% off deal only good for valet key, not transponder key - I called and got the owner Tim initially, he gave me a great quote and later that day I went to their office on Mass Ave in Arlington and within 20 mins the guy there had cut and programmed 2 transponder keys for $330. Lexus wanted $350 for ONE KEY and I had to make a separate appointment to have it programmed. Called ahead to have my keys replaced here. After the long drive I saw the shop and waited for the time we had scheduled. I knocked on the door but no one was there so I called and the person working said he won't be there for another half hour which I waited but no show I called again to see what was up but finally after an hour I gave up with the service and I called one last time to say good night. I decided to drive to Boston Car Keys I found parking no problem, they accepted walk ins and said after 15 minutes we'll be all set. Nice. I walked outside and around the block I saw DaCoopas Pizza which has delicious food. Great. After I came back my keys were waiting I tested it out on my car. Perfect. I drove home. The end. read more
