It seems 98% of these reviews are for buying a new car. Any person with 1/10 of a brain can sell a new car. You came to them so that is 80% of the sale. I believe they are less expensive than the competition so that pretty much closes the deal. I have bought many new cars in my life and I have work in the motorcycle industry and was an automatic transmission specialist. I took our 2003 forester in a few years ago because the engine light would stay on and I could not figure out why. So I took it to Herb Gordon and they had it all day and did any test they wanted but could not fix it. Than I tried again and I got it to go out for a couple of years. Lately the engine light came on again and again misfire number one. I tried a lot of things but that to me were logical and I did get the code to change which told me I was on the right track, but since I do not work on cars like before and do not know what sensor can cause this issue, I tried taking it back to Herb Gordon. I asked then to diagnose the issue and I told them everything I did and tried so it would save them time. I saw the car go up on a lift and before I knew it the hour was up. I asked them what they did and all they said was they pulled the code and it showed misfire number 3 & 4. and generally looked over the car. I said that is all you did was code it and YES. I could go to Advance Auto, Pep Boys or Auto Zone and have it coded in 5 minutes for free! They asked if I would leave the car the night so they could see how it was missing on cold start, so I did even though I explained it to them. I believe they or I called but it was afternoon already and again all they did was start it. They never put it on a diagnostic machine and said they want to do a compression test and leak down test and maybe one other. I herd the service writer talking about the MAF ( mass air flow sensor) but the other said it probably isn't that because of some other reason. That year forester doesn't even have a MAF sensor. I did ask the service writer if it was a valve or valve guide about how much do they cost and he said can be 1000.00 to 2000.00. I asked if cylinder 3 & 4 were on the same head since Subaru's have the box engine with two heads and none I asked were sure. I was not sure but I do not work on Subaru's every day. Based on the symptoms of the car, I did not agree with what they were doing. I called Subaru when I got home and they are just plain arrogant to deal with and I finally got them to give me a credit towards the repair, but that was not my complete issue with the dealer and Subaru did not give a damn. When I later went in to pick up my car for the weekend and take it back the next week, the service manager asked me into his office to talk. He went off on me telling me he had told me this repair may go up into the thousands of dollars. I never discussed pricing with him but I did with the service writer. I told him if he had told me this, I would have left before the work started telling him why would I put thousands into a 2003 car even with only 89K miles on it. Years ago, the lights on the dash were called idiot lights and from what I can see, code or no code, that is all these codes are, for idiots. A misfire can be almost anything and they never repaired it the first time a few years earlier, so why would I give them a blank check to just keep testing things or changing parts at my cost? It would be far less to buy a used engine complete with less miles for 600.00 up to maybe 1000.00 and change the complete engine. There is a risk buying from junk yards, but since I know many personally and some are family, I know I can get one. SO that would be better than letting them work on the car again and doing test after test racking up the hours? Hell No! That weekend I decided to brush up on my car repair skills and one by one researched what the sensors did. I cleaned a few sensors and now when I cold start, no missing, no engine light, but now I still feel I should look at a few other items. After doing more research, I may decide to replace a few sensors but I will drive it a week or two first and than decide. Now I know the problem is mainly solved, I can take my time and look at more to improve it, but this 99% better, no thanks to Herb Gordon. People, You Have Been Warned, If you take your car to Herb Gordon for service work, you have no one to blame but your self. I did call to see if they had a large diagnostic machine and I was told not anymore because they now use a laptop computer to do the same thing. To bad they did not connect it to my car, but I guess they cant make any money fixing it to fast. Greg Edwards is the service manager. The way he spoke to me the other day, he has no business working with the public. read more
