I've lived in Bayonne my whole life and we all know Henrickson's as a town staple, but then why do they want to cut corners and serve bad food ? First we ordered the mozzarella and tomato appetizer. To start, it was plated over shredded lettuce and it was topped with (drowning in ) a brown creamy balsamic dressing? Anyone knows , you plate this appetizer with fresh mozzarella and beefsteak tomatoes overlapping. Not the carousel over lettuce. Then it should be served with a nice aged balsamic vinegar. NOT a creamy dressing. It looked like someone vomited on our plate. Second , we ordered a crab cake sandwich. Um , why did I get a hockey puck ? Don't fry it to the point it's hard ! The coating was dark and hard as a rock. Why ruin a crab cake ? It's bad enough it's not a very good crab cake, but I could have gotten past that. What I can't get past is you take an "ok" crab cake and kill it even more. They need a real chef. It was extremely underwhelming. read more

Cocktails- if you can get the crabby guys attention away from his "musician" buddies he make a good drink. On the outside, Hendrickson's looks like a pub straight out of Killarney. The interior is just as Irish traditional and offers quite a selection of Irish-American and traditional American food and drink. Guiness, Murphy's, Sam Adams, Yuengling, and Brooklyn Lager are on tap. Bar area looks nice and has a few TVs for the game. Upstairs area for hosting private events. The food is traditional American (sandwiches, seafood, some pasta dishes). Burger is 1/2 pound and they cook it to perfection (Very good medium rare). Fries are decent here, not very salty but also not bland. Reuben sandwich is stacked high and was the perfect combo of sweet and salty (and cheesy). Warm and inviting rustic ambiance. Great location, moderate prices ($28 for lunch and brew for two), and friendly servers. Will definitely be trying the steak next time around. read more

First of all the food was off the charts .. from the drinks to the appetizers to the dinner amd finally the dessert .. the service was second to none .. very attentive and on top of everything .. my party wanted for nothing .. as busy as the owner was he came over multiple times to make sure everything was ok .. This place was a Bayonne instituition at one point. It has gone downhill fast and on a Saturday night there is no surprise there are only 5 tables in the whole place! First it smells like mold, then it took about 10 minutes to get our drinks. When my diet coke finally showed up, I questioned its color as it looked like an ice-T, my waitress said that's a Diet Coke(the syrup had clearly run out) then , I asked the worst waitress I have EVER had in my life, to check with the kitchen if they had regular buns for the hamburgers, she said she would check, but never did and when my burger came out on an English Muffin I asked for the manager. Eventually the bartender/manager came over and before I could say a word stated it comes on an English Muffin and it states that in the menu and he is not taking it off the bill...really what decent Pub/Tavern puts a 1/2 lb. burger on an English Muffin? If I were the owner I would fire the waitress and bartender immediately for the worst hospitality ever! What a shame... read more

This review is for the bartenders. If you get the older gentleman, just walk right back out the door. Typical Bayonne Insider Bullshit. He is extremely attentive to those who've been coming to Hendrickson's for the last 40 years. Otherwise, expect to be greeted with a poor attitude, service that's adequate at best, and if you ask for a menu, be prepared to wait half an hour so you can ask another bartender. You just don't matter to him. No, really, you don't. Heacts as though he'd rather you'd not showed up. He has to KNOW you (And what Street you grew up on, and your kids' names, and what church you go to) if he's going to do anymore than slightly less than the bare minimum. The other bartender is acceptable. In any other place he'd be good, in this situation the other guy drags him down. If you're under 60, RUN AWAY! read more

I was in for dinner with my wife just last week and everything was great! We were in on a busy Saturday night and the service kept up with the clientele and the food was first rate. There have been a lot of changes in the last few years and they've all been great. The owner is a hands-on type of owner, friendly and involved. I've been to a few private parties there and they don't miss a beat when serving 30 or more! This location has a rich history and is changing for the better as time moves on. How could you even give this place negative reviews? We ordered three appetizers and two entrees and everything was excellent. The steaks were cooked perfect, the French onion soup was homemade, and the beef tips were absolutely amazing! If you have high class NYC taste then you may want to steer clear but if you're average like most of us, then this is the place to be. Few other things to note: 1) drinks were cheap 2) food was priced below the average 3) the German food was absolutely on point We will come again and will bring our friends. So my sister and i go to this restaurant just to try it out cause we don't like going to the same places all the time. Sheri the waiter was nice at first. We decided to get Chicken Sandwiches with fries. Sheri comes out of the kitchen and says "The Chef made an error and cooked Chicken Wraps instead of Chicken Sandwiches" My sister and i looked at each other and was wondering WHY? HOW? THERE WAS NO TYPE OF BUSINESS? WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THERE!!! we said "OK!" She says "You guys will like it either way its the same just made into a wrap!" AND WALKED AWAY. I'M SORRY BUT I'M PICKY AS HELL, I HATE WRAPS. MY SISTER SAID 'WE DIDN'T ORDER WRAPS WE ORDERED SANDWICHES!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!! What ever we ate it wasn't good at all NO SEASONING. No review for Hendrickson's? Okay, pull up a chair, lemme get started... If you grew up in Bayonne, you've been to Hendrickson's at least once. If you extracted anything from living there in the form of historical facts, you know that this was once the city jail, city hall, and general meeting place for politicians around the time Bayonne because a city, circa 1869. This is a fabulous bit of history in a town that has never gone to any lengths to preserve its history. Bayonne was settled about ten years before Newark, around 1656, by the Dutch. You'd think in over 300 years of active living, something would have survived to preserve the town's history. Also, the Morris Canal is gone, all of the old farms are *long* gone, the 8th Street Station was burned down (probably on purpose), and most of the older wood-frame churches never made it past the mid 1970's (lots of suspicious fires back then). In any case, Hendrickson's survived and became a popular saloon, and eventually a bar-slash-restaurant. Let's rate 'em both. The restaurant has a small dining area, but they have as many tables and booths as humanly possible in there. The decor is mostly Bayonne Historical, so think newspaper clippings, local artist paintings (some of which are the outstanding watercolor prints by Steve Zazenski), and some knock-off tin signs. Think rustic in the 2nd-most densely populated city in America. Wild, I know. I had the Steak Murphy, and my mother and my aunt has the open steak sandwiches. We also has the escarole and white bean soup (of the day), and for whatever reasons, my Mom and Aunt Liz decided to get draught Blue Moons and keep me company. Now, I remember good, not great steaks here and pretty decent onion rings. In general, I was expecting average food. The soup was about what I expected, on the small side but okay. The entree blew me away. I've eaten my fair share of beef, and Hendrickson's got this right. The sweet and cherry peppers, potatoes, and steak just worked so well together, I started cleaning my plate with the bread. Terrific cut of meat, thick and done medium. The ladies both enjoyed their steak sandwiches; everyone has clean plates and not even an onion ring survived. I recommend dining here, and even as a destination, because if you ask nicely, you might get to see the original jail cells in the basement. As for the bar... it's a bar. The piano makes for some pretty good fun when the piano gets opened up and sing-alongs just start happening. This is not exactly a touristy place, and really, it's sadly a Bayonne-only sort of vibe. Would give zero stars if possible. Save your money. The place smells like the urinals are backing up, there is a layer of grease over every surface, and their beer is flat and weird tasting. Maybe they think they can survive on their "good ole Bayonne history", but those days are gone. read more

My wife and are transplants to Bayonne from Queens and have passed this place a bunch of times since weve been here and finally tried it last night. We split a potato skins with the works (excellent btw), I had the French Dip which was absolutely fantastic and my wife had the Philly Bella which was unreal (I took a bite) As for decor, its a bar in front and that seems to be where most of their business comes from with a small restaurant area in the back. They really should update the tables and chairs as the decor doesnt do the excellent food justice. EDIT: We went back a few times and I just had to lower the number of stars, the service in this place was just terrible and it was the only time in my whole life I ever left absolutely nothing for the tip. Under new management, no more piano. They have the same cooks as before and they still make amazing wings, burgers and French dips. The Canadian bacon appetizer is really good too. I'm not understanding the hate on here. The server I usually get is very attentive and nice. The food tastes consistently good. It is dark and there are limited taps but I'm still a fan. Christopher W basically covered it all. Mostly a Bayonne-only place, but if you find yourself in the city and don't know what to do, I would stop here. Their garlic steak tips are amazing. They come sizzling hot, perfectly seasoned with fresh garlic on top of toast points -- that soak up all the deliciousness of the steak and marinade.. we've definitely fought over these. They also have a delicious Cream of Turkey soup -- shredded turkey, not too much cream and just enough seasoning. For two winter seasons straight, a friend and I would call almost every other day to ask when they were going to have it. On to entrees. The saurbraten is by far my favorite. Thinly sliced, tender beef served with red cabbage and another side of your choice. (Skip the roasted potatoes, they are always too salty and overcooked.) The french onion soup is also really good. Chock full of onions & topped with a generous portion of melted cheese. For my meal I had their sliced open faced streak sandwich, served with two onion rings & fires & cole slaw. Hendrickson's Corner is the original name from the 1800's and many of the details are original. The front stained glass windows have been redone and an amazing sight when looking out. The owners are friendly and very accommodating. I found out when having lunch here for the first time. There is a bar in front with booth seating and additional seating in a separate dining area. The place is spotless and smells clean so I am puzzled about previous reviews. I came here for a business lunch and the beer on tap was cold and fresh. The taps are clean and there is a very good selection of 12 beers including Guinness. The special of the day was NY Pastrami so I ordered a Reuben with the pastrami. The sandwich was served open face with a pile of pastrami covered in melted Swiss and the right amount of sauerkraut and Russian dressing. Fries were served on a separate dish and were steak fries that were crispy and fluffy inside. The pastrami was delicious and NY Deli quality. My guest ordered the Philly Cheese Steak wrap that was packed with roast beef with the right amount of cheese and onions, served with steak fries. Hendrickson's Corner made a great first impression and the original qualities of the building provided a comfortable dining experience. I would consider the bar food a cut above the rest and will definitely come back to explore more of the menu. read more

Hendrickson's has been a home to my family since before I could remember! It's now tradition for our family to head in on a Saturday night for dinner and drinks. The taps are always fresh and rotating, the food is more than excellent, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. After years of eating here, I have a few favorites on the menu. The bolognese and mexican potato skins are at the top of the list! I definitely recommend visiting-not only for the food, but for the atmosphere and historical background. My husband and I really enjoy the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's cozy with nuances of European detailing. At times there is even live entertainment with a piano player that sits in the entrance of the two dining rooms. The food there is tasty but there have been times when it has been disappointing. My wife and I have been to this place twice this weekend and it will be the last time we step foot in this establishment. We were served by Meredith the first time and she was rude and seemed more worried about who she knew was sitting at the bar. So we decided to return again because the vibe was interesting. The second time we were surprised because it was crowded and a familiar face in Meredith was sitting at the bar. We thought we would have better service since she would not be serving us. Well I don't know if she is very important or really a rude person but she was yelling over everyone at the bar and even walked behind the bar to pour her own drinks. The other staffing apologized to us which we told them it was not their fault.
