The pizza is an excellent thin crust (best thin crust in town and one of the overall best pizza's in the NY/NJ area.) They also do good apps and bar food. Typical beers on tap, I wish they had more. It's not the most diverse place in terms of customers. It's decorated with older rock and roll musicians, 60's-80's, so I'd say that's the crowd you get as well. It's very popular with those kinds of locals. They have ok outdoor seating or you can just order take out. read more

I recently came here for dinner with my parents and girlfriend. My parents recommended this place since they been here before and enjoyed the outside patio seating this place offers, as well as their thin pizza. So, we all came on a weekday evening around 430pm and got a nice patio table seat with no issues. We all decided to order a bunch of menu items, and split everything. What we ordered was the large thin crust pizza, an order of buffalo wings, and an order of popcorn chicken. Also a few beers, lol. The pizza was excellent; my favorite item of the meal. Nothing beats some good thin crust pizza. I was very impressed with the buffalo wings too. Good amount of meat on the wings, and the hot sauce was just right. I liked the thai chili dipping sauce that came with the popcorn chicken; made the chicken pieces taste better. Overall, this was a great spot to have some outdoor dining. I'll be honest, I liked the mussels better than the burger. My husband enjoyed everything. I had the bacon cheeseburger, ordered it medium rare and received it well done. I'm used to ordering medium rare and getting it medium, so I was disappointed. I had it was topped with American and bacon. My husband had a bleu burger, which he ordered well done, and received well done. He was happy. Everything was good, but I was expecting more from the burger. The Starting Point is as far down Avenue A as you can go. It looks like it is in the middle of a construction site, but don't let any of that fool you, it's a good neighborhood bar. Here is the rating breakdown: Food: Actually fresh and tasty bar food. Had the pretzels and they were unique. That Bar pie is worth the trip alone. And those chicken tacos are just a taste of comfort. The ingredients were fresh and food came out piping hot. And a pretty wide spread beer menu. Service: Everyone there made you feel like one of them. Servers were quick and timely with the needs. Price: For the quality, it's great! $8 bar pie and $4.50 draft beer! It's a steal even. Décor: Lots of sports on the TV but the room is filled with old record albums. The music reflected the walls with great classic rock! I love this neighborhood bar. There is usually parking and the staff is attentive and friendly. If you're looking to have great bar food at a great price this is the place for you. I've had their pizza, wings, fried ravioli, fries and chicken fingers. Your basic bar food, but everything was fresh and cooked well. I've become so use to NYC prices for beer which is usually $10 a beer; however, this place serves beer for $5 or less. Can't beat that. read more

I can't imagine what the hell has happened to this place?? I visited the other night and found everything to be completely off! First of all 2/3 of their previously great "best in Bayonne" menu is now gone. They basically eliminated almost everything that I and my friends eat there. Who does that to a restaurant? I then proceded to order one of the very few old standards left on the menu, the fried ravioli and the large pie. Both were basicaly inedible! The ravioli had no relelationship to what it used to be. It was tasteles, soggy, and the it tasted like it was fried in dirty oil that was used to fry fish. The pizza (which used to be the best thin bar pie in the neighborhood) was absolute SHIT! It was garbage, an insult, inedible crap. I spoke with a few other people who were at the bar and they basically said the same thing, everything that they ordered was just terrible and they were not coming back. To make matters worse, the service was ice cold and the so called bartender (the punk rock dude) was completely clueless! No fork, then no knife, then no plates, then no napkins, no red pepper for the pizza and no personality what so ever. When we complained about the food, he "offered" to buy us back a round. Guess what imbecile? That is exactly what every bartender at the Starting Point has done in the past and WE HAVE NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT ANYTHING! That's what bartenders do! If you actually were one, you just may have known that. The owner of this place is obviously not too bright. How the hell can you let such a great, reliable, consistent place go completely to shit?? How the hell can you eliminate 2/3 of your menu? How can you let rank amateurs run your kitchen? How can you hire absolutely clueless people to tend bar in such a long established place with so many regulars?? You are going to destroy your business and you'll have no one to blame but yourself. Growing up in Brooklyn I've had my share of great and not so great pizza. This pizza is in a class by itself. I cannot figure out what it was honestly it tasted like cardboard with horrid sauce and coagulated cheese on it. It was terrible and the place is dirty. They have a young staff that isn't trained well. I'm trying to eat the crap and the kid comes and sprays windex all over the table next to me so close I felt the spray, who does that. We recently checked this place out after a patron at the Blind Tiger on Bleeker Street highly recommended them after hearing I have a Bayonne connection. Now this is no way, no how similar to the citadel of beer extremism which is the Tiger (where I'm a long time regular) but for Bayonne, the Starting Point is really a great amount of fun! They are located at the end of Ave A on the corner of 1st St in a spot that really does seem like the end of the earth but in a good Detroit-like kind of way! Super chill, very friendly staff (with none of the odd, ADHD-like demeanor which is so common in Bayonne) , a great and very reasonably priced extensive food menu, the just perfect old school bar pie and they actually have a few worthy craft beers on draught and in the can / bottle. I had Sixpoint Bengali Tiger in the can which is an old favorite and Dogfish 60 on tap. There is something cozy and almost vintage looking to the room. It must be great on a mid winter night. The back yard also looked great and I'm looking forward to hanging out at one of the outside tables on a future visit. The sausage and peppers roll was served hot, large, generously stuffed and very flavorful. I saw those home made pretzels go by and man, they looked amazing. The tiny amount of reviews on here tells me that this place must truly be a "best kept secret" in Bayonne as it was actually busy for a Sunday night. The amount of reviews should change as the city grows and more and more people move in. Personally I'd give the Starting Point 6 stars if I could just for having a great photo of Neil Young along with a framed copy of Harvest up on the wall! They are highly recommended! read more

I was hoping it was going to be a hidden gem after eating Lee's Tavern in Staten Island. This very thin pizza turned out to be a local favorite Bayonne "Bar" Pie. It was served in Big Apple Pizza on Broadway, Naples, but all these closed down. Now what's left of this unique pie are a handful of places. This pizza was really thin and could be eaten by my 5 year old son in one sitting. This was a the best constructed "Bar" Pie in Bayonne. The bar area is quite impressive. Their pizza is amazing! You can't find thin pizza like this anymore. The service is extremely slow but I would not stop going there for that...the pizza is that good. The last time I was there, there was only one server so we waited quite a while. But, as overwhelmed as she was was she was still very personable...and it's not her fault. All in all it's a great place. Even on a Friday night. Crowd is friendly never too noisy and atmosphere is always a good vibe.
