My favorite BBQ restaurant in St. Charles (and let's face it - better than most places in STL). Things that make it stand out - the location! It's in a fabulous historic Art Deco building in Old St. Charles (the old water works building) and has a great vibe, inside and out (yes, outdoor dining with this beautiful weather)! A lot of BBQ joints are greasy, hole-in-the-wall places, which is fine when the food is good and you're just getting it to go, but sometimes, you want a nice-looking, clean, roomy restaurant to hang out! Today was actually my first experience picking up for lunch - everything was ready on-time, friendly staff who knew what I was there for and helped me quickly, nothing missing, and the portions are healthy! My teammates and I were happy workers today. I had the Two-Meat plate with two sides (cheddar grits and baked beans). Meat (brisket & pulled pork) was excellent (my only critique is I'm not crazy about their sauce, but it's not the worst - I can deal). Cheddar grits were great. Baked beans - I was a little hesitant when I opened the container. Definitely not the color I usually associate with baked beans, but they were so good!! I'm not sure what flavors I was tasting, but there was something just a little different about them, while still tasting like baked beans, that made them unique! Haven't had a bad experience here. This place gets one star because the service was good. Our waitress was so nice and helpful. Now for the bad part.. if you like rubber brisket and dried out ribs this is your place. The baked beans tasted sour and the bbq sauce was watery. Such a disappointment. I have had better brisket from the supermarket. Also, what's with the music? Britney Spears, top 40 - come on the whole theme of the place is blues. At least it smelled like bbq. My wife and I visited here today. The Ambiance was great and colorful. Great pictures on wall. The server was very nice and helpful, but for one of 4 tables in the restaurant that were occupied the service was very slow. From the time we ordered to when we received our food was at least 20 minutes. And lastly the food, it was average. I was hoping for so much more. The brisket felt like it was boiled and the ribs had too much fat. I was very disappointed. To be fair the sides were good. I had baked beans and potato salad; my wife had a baked potato and slaw. Located on Main Street St Charles it's convenient to the casino and all the activities going on at the riverfront. The building had lots of charm and character. Walking in you are greeted by the delicious aroma of smoked meats and it's mouth watering. Service is great and they have a wide menu. The pulled pork was melt in your mouth and oh so flavorful , beans were tasty and loaded with meat, the sweet potato was huge (enough for 2 people). Definitely worth a try! read more

Got there around 1830 on a Thursday and plenty of seating and service was decent. Got the combo two meats with the brisket and sausage. It also came with two sides and I got the Cole slaw and potato salad. My brisket didn't compare to what I get at other places. It was one strip that was almost dried out. Also, the sausage was forgettable. Not a lot of protein for a $20 dish. Sides were pretty good, no complaints there. Also had an old fashioned which immediately disappointed me when I saw ice chips. Barely tasted any liquor. Two old fashioneds, that meal and service charge was as whopping $50. Only good thing was got triple points toward my United miles since I used my United Explorer card. Let me start with the positives: the art work and lay out was really cool. The staff was friendly and they tried their best to remedy what was wrong; the problem was the food. I ordered smoked sausage, baked beans and collard greens. The greens were supposed to have bacon onion. They came out with no juice, dry as a bone, no bacon or onion. There did not taste good at all. I tried the Mac & cheese instead; worse than the greens. The breadcrumb topping was just thrown on top & tue dish was tasteless. I'm not sure what kind of cheese they use but it's not good. Our appetizer potato skins were not fully done-the cheese wasn't melted in the middle and there was too much potato left on the dish. The manager was great and removed the cost from our bill. The best thing for me were the basked beans. They had bits of brisket and were delicious. My husband enjoyed his pulled pork although it was more fatty than he would've liked. His sides: green beans and baked potato were good. Not sure if this was an off night or what, but we will probably not be back. read more

Really unsure how I've been living in STL for this long and haven't been to Hendricks...let me start with the building. Old water supply building in downtown St Charles off of a cobblestone road. Outside had a massive upstairs deck with seating and table and downstairs has an expansive patio with outdoor fireplace. Right off the Katy trail in the back with tons of parking. Inside has a super rustic vibe with cool wood furniture and tons of paintings of singers. Not your typical casual grab and go kind of bbq joint. It's also three stories- downstairs is a blues bar and upstairs is more of a private party area. Ok now onto food. Menu is pretty expansive- lots of apps, sandwiches, platter options, and sides. We got the nachos for an app (there's a coupon when you check in) and they were super fresh and a massive portion. Jalapeños were super fresh too! For entree I got the 2 meats (turkey and brisket) and sides were creamed spinach and sweet potato casserole. The brisket was quite literally the most tender I have ever had- couldn't even get it onto my fork without breaking. Amaze. Sweet pot casserole was also incredible. My fiancé got the chicken in a biscuit sammy (it was huge) and Mac and cheese and were equally as good. Mac and cheese rivals Salt and Smokes "cracker mac"- super good. All in all this place is a hidden gem and I feel like I don't deserve to be from STL since I didn't know this place existed until now...sigh. Zero stars, supposed to be smoked, my smoked sausage by the manager own admission it was smoked in juice! What juice, it tasted like boiled hot period! The rib tips were sad 5 pieces on the BBQ platter and the same sad 5 pieces on the RibTip platter, make that make sense! The best thing about Hendricks is their location. They have a great two level patio right off the Katy Trail. We had amazing weather and sat outside. Most everything else was disappointing. I think our waitress had way too many tables (so it wasn't her fault) but service was really slow. Probably 20 minutes before someone came by for a drink order. Another 30-40 until someone was back for food orders. Then about an hour wait for the food to come out. We did order appetizers with our drinks so we had something to eat on while we waited for our meals. Unfortunately neither appetizer was very good. We got the bread basket with half biscuits and half corn bread and the nachos. The nachos were 75% baked beans, and were already pretty cold when we got them. The biscuits in the bread basket were very dense and raw in the middle. The corn bread was very dry and fell apart when you tried to bite into it. It also was supposed to come with honey butter but came with just plain butter instead. At one point we went inside to order a drink from the bar since service was slow, however it was just as slow at the bar. We waited about 15 min for a beer to be poured for us and there was only one other person seated at the bar. For my meal I ordered a Turkey melt with a baked potato as my side. They ran out of baked potatoes before our meals came out, but instead of asking what substitute I'd like they just gave me fries. My parents both ordered sweet potatoes as sides which they also ran out of, and they also were not asked for a substitute (one received onion rings and one fries). The Turkey melt was fine but nothing I'd order again. Half of the fries were really tasty, the other half were so saturated in grease they were inedible. My dad ordered the BBQ platter with ribs and his plate came out with just 3 small ribs and 2 onion rings which seemed like a tiny portion for what the menu calls 1/4 rack of ribs. read more

My son and his family came in from California. I had talked about how great the BBQ is in Missouri... "even the worst is better than the best in California." Chosen for its location, instead of past experience, I was proved wrong by Hendricks. The brisket was fatty and fork tender, but had zero flavor. The pulled pork tasted rancid and foul. The smoked sausage could have been store bought, if it tasted better. The cornbread bland... and so hard the Blues could have used them as small tiny yellow hockey pucks. The one shining glimmer was the honey butter for the biscuits.... which were barely warmer than the cold butter. The sauces helped fill out some flavor, but were marginal. When a condiment is better than any portion of the meal... that says something. We stopped in about an hour before closing time on a Friday night, and from the moment we walked in, we felt like an unwanted burden. A host was sweeping up front and didn't acknowledge us being there for awhile. Once we were finally seated, it took awhile for a server to even come over to us. Once we ordered, our food came up very quickly, and the portion sizes are big. I couldn't even eat half of my pulled pork sandwich. Yes, this place is damn good. I had the three meat plate with beans and sweet potato casserole. My choice of three meats were brisket, baby-back ribs, and pork. The brisket was excellent and passed my pull-test and, as can be seen in my photos, bent perfectly over my finger. There was a dark peppery cracked peppercorn bark and the correct amount of fat on each brisket slice. The baby-back ribs were large, possibly the largest baby-back ribs that I'll ever seen. The meaty ribs had a good taste and came cleanly off the bone. The ribs were a little over-cooked for competition BBQ, but perfect for a restaurant for those who prefer over-cooked ribs. The pork was moist and tender with the proper amount of smoke flavor. The beans were excellent, but I didn't enjoy the sweet potato casserole...it was very plain. Hendricks offers 4 sauces and I liked the sweet sauce the best. Parking is a little tricky. You need to around the block and come in from below via an elevator or stairs as the building is located on a hill adjacent to the Missouri river. The service was excellent. The cost of the meal is higher than other local BBQ joints, but the quality offsets the price differential. My ticket was $36.07 before tip. read more

Collard greens were not rinsed and had granules of sand. Could not finish any other food. Staff was extremely nice. It's been a week since our visit to Hendricks and I'm still in disbelief. We reserved a private party for 30 a week beforehand and were told they'd be able to accommodate us with several waitresses. It was quite the opposite. Our party started at 3 pm, we got our drinks around 4 pm and dinner at 5:30 pm. We applaud our one waitress for doing the best she could and asked if they were short staffed. The manager said no, they expect one waitress to serve a 30 people party with no help. We mention she could use some support. Their response, "well that's her job, not mine." However claiming to be busy, other staff were seen on their phone and standing around talking. At its busiest, there were seven additional tables filled in the restaurant. In the end, this visit taught our team the importance of teamwork and support. One week in Missouri and I missed out on Pappys and Suga Fire, but did come across Hendricks BBQ while riding the free trolley through St. Charles. As a solo lunch diner I had no issues waiting for seating or service. If I had had more time I would totally have done the sampler all for myself, not gonna lie. Smoked brisket, St. Louis ribs, baked beans and corn casserole...so yummy that I should have ordered some to go to take home! To think I could have tried this place earlier in the week and come back...but no regrets. Great place to get some tasty barbecue, staff was great. Brisket and ribs were very tender and full of flavor. Good selection of different sauces. The choices of sides are also very good, hard to pick just a couple to have. Yeah. So I'm not really sure how I'm feeling about this .. this isn't meant to be hateful but more an Observation. Hendricks opened sometime in '11/'12 and I just heard about them today and I've been a lifelong STL resident. I've never heard of one person talk about Hendricks .. Really only stopped because I was looking for someplace new. My waiter (I forgot his name but that's on me) was super friendly and attentive, so good on him! The gal who brought my food out was wearing what looked like pajamas acted as if she was anywhere but work and couldn't be bothered with a simple hello .. On to the food The Fried Green Maters looked great and the dipping sauce was described as a Canes type style of a sauce, The F.G.T were Incredibly bland , a little to thick sliced and the sauce was no thing more than a Mayo/ketchup mix . The Cheddar Grits was just about the same, came out disappointingly bland and lacking the cheddar moniker. Maybe a sharper cheddar and seasoning would do them Justice . I would bet a small bit of money that the potato salad was pre made out of a tub from a restaurant supply store. Typical mustard yellow Potato salad at any given backyard bbq. For Five dollars it was just completely not worth it At the cost of 27.00 and some change I was a little surprised that a full slab of ribs did not come with any sides at all.. but the 15 dollar sandwiches do??? The only redeeming factor about today's lunch is that the ribs were probably the meatiest rack I've ever had from a restaurant . They were super tender but not overcooked and mushy and still falling off the bone.. I usually have no problem killing a full rack of ribs but, not at Hendricks . Awesome atmosphere with lots of drink options (try the moonshine!) and live music. I don't know how often they have live music, but when I went on the weekend it was happening! Our waitress was amazing and the bartender was great, he gave me samples of a bunch of moonshines to try. Now onto the food. The fried green tomatoes were a tasty and fun appetizer! They were fried perfectly with a great dipping sauce; we really enjoyed them. The BBQ meats were pretty good (brisket and pulled pork), they weren't life changing, but also not bad at all. Now onto why I knocked off a few stars...the sides. The sweet potato casserole was good, very very sweet, but a solid side that we enjoyed. The mac & cheese was just okay. Not well-seasoned and nothing too special, I ate about half. Finally, onto the big problem...the bacon-braised greens. They were so salty I actually couldn't eat them. I'm a salt lover, and I had to spit them out because they were inedible. This was a huge turnoff, especially because the restaurant is not inexpensive. When the waitress asked what I thought and I told the issue, she just kind of shrugged and didn't offer to replace it, which was also a bummer. Went here for my friends b-day. To say the food was not good is an understatement. The onion rings didn't even have a crispy coat over them, they were slimey. The chicken in the wraps and biscuit was dry as sand & flavorless. I got a strawberry moonshine drink.... You should've seen the strawberry that was inside the drink, it looked as if it was rolled around the floor, left out for a decade, and stuck in my drink. I didn't even taste any "moonshine" in there, it tasted like dirty water. We told the server this & instead of the manager taking initiative and coming to talk to us, she made the server come back and deal with it. She also mentioned that "the best we can do is give you 20% off" and our bills separately were still $50.00 each. The server was good, it was the food, management, and quality that was not good. Get better kitchen staff, management, servers who want to be there, and people who care about the establishment. It's a shame because my friend used to love this place PRIOR to the pandemic. So, it's good. It's not "oh my God I will remember this meal forever" good, but there are some decent choices here. The setting is phenomenal: comfortable, open and full of energy. The patio area really looks like an awesome place to have a meal, and the inside has that rustic but contemporary feel that makes you feel like you are someplace both cool and casual. The BBQ and sides are decent. Turkey is smokey and tender, brisket is soft enough to cut with a fork. Ultimately, the sauces add a lot. Personally, After trying all 4, I liked the hot. It added the extra kick of flavor the meal needed. Brisket nachos and fried green tomatoes were both a hit with our table. Not dazzling, but providing the kind of sauce and crunch you might look for in an appetizer. Service was fine. A little preoccupied and a little slow, but friendly and informative. I'm just a bit middle of the road on this one. I'd certainly eat here again. It strikes me as a great place to grab a pulled pork sandwich, a beer, and a seat on the patio. It's just not rave-worthy. I recently joined a friend at a "sober karioke" night hosted in the fun, sultry jazz bar located on the ground floor of this restaurant, and I was completey bowled over! Honestly I went in with lower expectations, not being much of a fan of karioke or sobriety, but in the end that just meant that I was that much more impressed! Turns out, I have an inexpensive, and very sociable new hobby! Firstly, the bar itself: they really nailed the ambiance here. It's close without being too tiny for people to mingle. The walls are decorated with amazing muerals and bits of roadhouse oddities that really complement the atmosphere. It felt like the perfect place to turn stangers into aquaintences, and those into friends. And that's what everyone seemed to be doing! As far as the food, I knew from getting takeout that it would be amazing, and it was. But what I was not prepared for were the huge array of creative and delicious non-alcoholic drinks they had available, at prices that don't at all overwhelm your night out. We were ordering and trying something new each hour, and we all stayed comfortably within budget. The final note that has to be shared was the INCREDIBLE service by our wonderful bartender Kimmie! She was always quick and attentive, not to mention so helpful where we were indecisive, and she truly seemed to be having a great time! Her attitude and bright smile became infectious, and while we sadly did not get to hear her sing, these fun alcohol-free nights are hosted there every month, so we have not given up coaxing her into it. She looks like the kind of woman who could SLAY some Janis Joplin. Hubby took me here over the weekend as a bday treat. I had eaten heree multiple times before and loved it...though it has been awhile. I learned that they have changed ownership and this may be where some of the changes came from. We ordered deviled eggs, drinks, pick 2 meats with sides. I was dissapointed with the food... the deviled eggs were heavy on relish and also had a vinegar taste to them. The brisket, ribs and turkey were good, the baked beans and green beans were very tasty. The mac n cheese was decent but not cheesy - more like a creamy butter noodle. We both liked the drinks too - I got the lemonade moonshine drink (forgot the name) and Hubby got the moonshine margarita. I did not care for the plating - it was the silver trays, but they place paper over it. So when I cut my brisket, the paper cut into it and I had to pick it out. Yuck. They did observe social distancing and our server was very polite and helpful.
