Helen does my favorite genre of southern food "came from the garden", a rich, flavorful, and fresh meal inspired by a deep love and appreciation for the magic of the South. I came for lunch and was recommended the tomato pie and had a side of peas and beans. The seasonal tomato pie was decadent and salty, while the beans were seasoned. The bar staff was friendly and personable. Would recommend for a great Birmingham experience!
Food first, thoughts after... Wow. A standing ovation. My love and I have found our goto restaurant for any celebration, date night, or if we just want a delicious and special dinner. Helen was loved by both of us. Our server was very knowledgable and very welcoming. The atmosphere was casual but intimate. The food was phenomenal. The attention to detail in every dish is what sold us. Big bonus was the portion sizes were perfect. Typically we're ordering 2 apps and 2 entrees but for Helen, we got 1 app and split the entree. We will definitely be back.
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when we got here. This place has been on my list since it opened, but I just never made it out. I'm glad I did!!! It makes me think of going to eat at your grandmas house, but elevated. The dishes all had a southern undertone, but were prepared in a new and exciting way. We started with the angel biscuits, as they were highly recommended. That brown butter that came with them was Then we shared a summer salad which was light and had apples, walnuts and a vinaigrette dressing. My friend got the New York strip and I got the Ibérico Presa, which is part of the pork shoulder , and we shared the collard greens and potatoes as a side. All of the meat we found out is raised in Franklin TN and is fresh. For dessert we shared the Alabama lane cake, which I was bossed with after reading To Kill a Mockingbird and have tried to make myself! The restaurant itself is small and cozy and they use real old southern style glass dishes. Our waiter, Micah was nice and attentive without being pretentious. He handled all of our questions about the menu seamlessly Hope to return soon!
My neighbor and I enjoyed a very nice steak dinner, it was cooked to perfection-and very tasty. Followed by Love Bird dessert- one of the best pastries I've ever had. Tate, our waiter- was so kind, bubbly, overall great energy.
I'm always looking for local, non chain, farm to table restaurants and was excited to try this one out with my sister-in-law. The interior was refreshingly classic but current, making good use of an elongated and narrow space. The partially open kitchen increases interest, but I was sitting with my back to it, which spared my lunch companion from competing for my attention. Our server Krynn was perfectly kind, prompt, and pleasing, genuinely welcoming to us and knowledgeable of the dishes. She was so very sweet and one of the best servers I have encountered in Alabama. The food was very thoughtfully prepared. We ordered Tuesday's lunch special, the fried green tomato BLT. We were impressed that the bacon is cured on site and cut the same day it is fried and served. The sandwich was so large that we easily split it. The tomatoes were good. I prefer lettuce in leaves, not shreds, but it didn't detract much from the experience and it didn't fall out everywhere. The sandwich came with chips which seemed homemade and were very good, not soggy. I added salt which was brought in a little wooden pinch bowl. For a side we split a plate of marinated summer peas and beans. This was baby lima beans and black eyed peas, with a very small amount of finely diced red onion and red bell pepper. There was a copious amount of cilantro that was not finely chopped and dominated certain mouthfuls. I would adjust this recipe by using a few more pinches of red onions and bell peppers, and finely chopping the cilantro and using less of it. It was very flavorful! I thought my SIL might still be hungry so we got a cheesecake slice at the end. It presented beautifully and was covered in a blueberry syrup. The texture was a bit ragged but it isn't any worse than one I'd make at home. I also felt the lemon flavor was a bit overly strong, and the crust appeared to be cornmeal based and wasn't my favorite, but that's just my preference. I feel that smokers or people with few taste buds would still be able to taste the food at Helen! I also ordered a cup of black regular coffee and it was truly delightful, no adjustments to that flavor needed in my opinion! We were attended by a couple other servers and everyone was polite and sweet. I felt very relaxed and as if I were valued as a customer. I hope Krynn has many sweet customers who appreciate how nice she is! I hope to be back someday and would definitely recommend Helen restaurant.
4.5 stars! The angel biscuits & butter are to die for! I loved the family style sides, which allowed my table to try everything! I was skeptical about the Lima beans but they were so good! The pork chop was super flavorful! The cinnamon roll was perfection! I love the ambiance & service was great (if not slightly slow, but I was with a huge group & it's the holidays so def could be that)! Will be back!
WOW!!!! Best meal we had in BHAM! The sweet corn ribs were soooooooo delicious! We could not stop eating them - perfectly seasoned summer produce! The rib eye steak was beyond juicy and tender, cooked to perfection with salt, pepper, and beef tallow. We enjoyed the warm biscuits with sugar cane butter! The peanut butter pie dessert tasted like a decadent Reese's candy with chocolate, peanuts, and whipped cream! Service was fantastic and lovely ambience!
We had a delightful anniversary dinner at Helen. Valet was smooth, we were sat quickly, and enjoyed the ambiance. Our server was kind and described the dishes in detail. We absolutely loved every bite of the steak. The sides were delicious too. We didn't know if it would be worth the hype, but it definitely was!
We came here for Valentine's dinner / date night. We had never been, and let me say - we have definitely been missing out. I would definitely recommend making a reservation as they stay really busy. Our waiter was great, both with knowledge of the menu and specials and with his recommendations. The food itself was great. We got two appetizers - the angel biscuits and the st. louis pork ribs. The pork ribs were alright, but needed some more saucce and were the 'worst' things we had that night - not bad, but something had to get that award. The angel biscuits, esp with that butter they used, were delicious, and that's coming from someone who is NOT a biscuit lover. For dinner, we got a side of brussel sprouts and a side of the yukon gold potatoes, and we split the 22oz ribeye. Both the brussels and the potatoes were amazing - my wife loved the brussels the most, while I was favoring the potatoes. The ribeye had a great flavor. Needless to say, we had plenty of food to take home and eat again for another meal. I look forward to coming back soon.
What's going on Yelpies !!! You know that moment when you asked your friend or significant other what do you want for dinner and you both look at each other and say .... Helen's ... Yeah that what you should say instead of the normal answer. The food here is one of a kind. Really .... I'm at a minimum 25 years in the food and beverage industry (I know TMI) Chef can cook some superb dishes.. From short rib ,Iberico pork , to Certified Angus Beef. You're going to eat good and taste real food with class and comfort because the people and vibe will make you feel at home. Oh and the selection of wine is amazing. Keep it going and good luck on your new up and coming seafood location next store
We had a 5:30 dinner upstairs. It was not crowded but filling up by time we finished our meal. We did have a reservation. We started with warm angels. Goodness, they were so good. I highly recommend. Both had the filet! It was so delicious and cooked perfectly! The atmosphere was nice. We did valet parking.
Service was great. Old fashioned (not on menu) was good. Got the porterhouse, fat left on the slab, which I thought was unusual, but good meat otherwise. "Middlins"? Terrible. Soaked in something citrus/acidic. Biscuits, good. Potatoes, ok.
Helen was the perfect spot for a long-overdue dinner with one of my dearest friends. The atmosphere strikes a beautiful balance--elevated but welcoming, with a kind of understated Southern elegance. We shared the ribeye, cooked beautifully and full of flavor, along with the bone marrow, which added a rich, decadent note to the meal. The cabbage surprised me in the best way--tender, charred just right, and deeply flavorful. The homemade cracker jacks were perfect. And the little gem salad with homemade buttermilk dressing? Simple, fresh, and one of those dishes that reminds you how good the basics can be when done well. For dessert, we split the gluten-free hazelnut dessert and the lemon bar. Both were excellent--the hazelnut dessert was perfectly balanced with contrasting textures and not too sweet, and the lemon bar had the perfectly bright, citrusy finish to end the meal. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the pacing let us really enjoy catching up. Helen is a gem--thoughtful food, beautifully executed, and a space that makes a meal feel like a moment.

Food was amazing. Service was on point. Recommendations from my waitress where the steak, the summer peas, a couple different appetizers and we ate everything. And enjoyed it all. Looking forward to returning as I am from Chicago and this is definitely a keeper. Thanks a million‼ #Foodie read more

My wife and I went out to celebrate my birthday. We started with the biscuits and cane syrup butter. If you love biscuits give this a try. We then split the 40 oz porterhouse served sliced. They had a deconstructed twice baked potato with bacon as a special side that we really enjoyed too. Roasted carrots were delicious too. Great wine selection. Finished with the fresh peaches and oatmeal cream pie with a touch of thyme. My wife loved the key lime dessert drink and I sipped the Averno Siciliano aperitif. Well worth the investment. Wonderful decor and love the open kitchen and level of service. Valet parking available too. read more

You may have to wait to get a reservation, but you will not be disappointed! Whether you're snagging lunch or having dinner, Helen's menu has lots of tasty options. They're located in the heart of downtown and have big windows up front so you can watch the city pass by. Their steaks are amazing, along with their cocktails and the creme brûlée was my fav dessert! read more
Amazing amazing amazing!!! I met a friend at the bar for an early dinner and we started off with the biscuits and the tomato pie. Do me a favor and please get the biscuits they are delicious. To drink the bartender recommended the daily punch as well as a wine pairing suggestion for our entree. I throughly enjoyed everything and the duck was amazing. We left not too full but satisfied. I cannot wait to return with a group to try the other entrees and cocktails that Helen has to offer. read more

Great food and nice ambiance!! Love how intimate of a place it is. My boyfriend and I went here for our Christmas dinner and really enjoyed it. If you go be sure to ask for the server TESSA! She was super sweet and was really patient with helping us understand the menu. Recommend the filet mignon, Brussel sprouts, and the angel biscuits. Pass on the potatoes if you don't like a smoky chili flavoring. They were OK but not our favorite. read more
We had high expectations before dinner at Helen, but I must say we were very underwhelmed with the overall meal. For the check total, we were expecting much more. As I always do, let's start with service. Matthew was exceptional very knowledgeable and very attentive. The restaurant front staff was very engaged from the time we walked in. We started with angel biscuits, as it seems like most everybody that dines at Helen does. They were quite good. That and the lemon cheesecake were the highlights to the meal. The 14oz filets were more like a 6 edible ounce fillet after I got finished trimming it. I don't expect to have to trim a fillet even bone in It was cooked as requested. Two shareable sides were OK, one was actually served cold, lentils, which kind of surprised us. It did not mention that on the menu. Matthew stated when asked, that was supposed to be that way. We thought it could be because it took 30 minutes to get the filets to us. We were having dinner at 5pm, it was not busy. The summer peas, seasonal, were very tasty and well prepared. Overall disappointing meal. Oh, my wife said the Oregon Pinot Noir was quite tasty. Supposedly a blend just for Helen. There are a lot of options in Birmingham in this price point that I would recommend before retuning to Helen. read more

Helen offers a modern take on Southern hospitality. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with a warm, inviting ambiance--dim lighting, rustic wood tones, and a touch of upscale charm that sets the tone for an unforgettable evening. The service? Impeccable. Attentive without being intrusive, with thoughtful recommendations that guided our night seamlessly. We started with the angel biscuits, and if there's one thing you should not skip, it's these. Fluffy, golden, and perfectly balanced between buttery and savory, the biscuits came with whipped cane syrup butter and a sprinkle of sea salt that hit every note. Sweet, salty, airy. The steaks were the undisputed stars of the evening. The 22oz 35-day dry-aged Bear Creek Farm ribeye was rich, deeply marbled, and full of complex, beefy flavor. The 16oz prime New York strip, leaner but equally satisfying with a beautiful sear and bold finish. Both cuts were expertly cooked and paired nicely with the sides. The Yukon gold potatoes with crispy shallots, garlic, and "krack sauce" sounded like a sure winner. While tasty, they didn't quite reach the level of indulgence we expected--good, but not memorable. What would have done it for me was to have a nice crust/bite on the potatoes, something to off-set the soft texture that potatoes have. The grilled asparagus, dressed with anchoïade sauce and kosho cured egg, was the least impressive. The texture leaned a bit too firm, and the flavor was subtle to a fault. Not bad, just... there. Redemption came in the form of the peanut butter mousse torte. A true showstopper: the brownie base was dense and fudgy, layered with luscious peanut butter mousse, then topped with a chocolate-peanut butter shell that cracked with each bite. The Eastaboga chantilly cream and cocktail peanuts brought a balanced finish--salty, creamy, and sweet in all the right ways. Helen is a gem in Birmingham's culinary scene. With gorgeous ambiance, thoughtful service, and standout mains (those steaks!), it's a place that earns its reputation. Some sides may fall short, but the highs far outweigh the lows. This restaurant's approach and creativity revolves around cooking with live fire. I've now seen a handful of these restaurants cooking 100% of the time using an elaborate cook line with grills, planchas and warming boxes driven with fire to deliver a high end dining experience...and frankly it gets me off of my couch and into these very exciting restaurants. Helen is a perfect example. Let me start with the bar. We arrived early and was greeted warmly and asked if we would like to wait in the bar. Of course we said 'Yes!'. We were greeted by Jo, Carla, and Hannah. The 3 mixologists were bad asses. We enjoyed watching them mix creative libations for their customers while 'peppering' them with menu and regional questions. They were consummate professionals and treated us like we were old friends, even though they were very busy. When our table was ready, we were handed off to Richard for our dinner service. We started with Angel Biscuits. This appetizer is a must. They are light airy fresh baked rolls paired with whipped butter and cane syrup. They are simple but amazing. For our dinner course, my wife had the scallops and I had the huge beef short rib. We also ordered the okra and button mushroom vegetables. Interesting that my wife really liked the okra and I liked the mushrooms. Neither vege blew my doors off like our entrees. 1st- The portion sizes on everything was terrific. I'm used to California and these portions were very gracious. My wife's scallops were served with a Au Poivre (peppercorn) sauce. They were fresh and flavorful. I had the brontosaurus beef short rib. It was coated with an Alabama white BBQ sauce. The sauce balanced the rich, Smokey and slightly fatty rib. It was awesome. Dessert? Of course. We shared the salted caramel budino with pecan cookies. It was a light and tasty way to finish our meal. Service: Richard was super friendly and informative. We loved him. He was not a fine dining waiter, but certainly can be successful at Helen. Rationale on this comment: we poured our own wine and water; I was a sloppy mess with my short rib and the table was a mess...we cleaned our mess, not Richard. I didn't factor this detail in when I gave this restaurant 5 stars because it doesn't profess to be a fine dining restaurant. Birmingham should rally behind Helen and continue to support this trend setting restaurant and others trying to feed our communities. I wish Helen was in the SF Bay Area. I would be there weekly. read more

A Service, food, and ambiance are phenomenal. I came for a birthday dinner. Several staff members wished me a happy birthday! The ribeye was tender, juicy, perfectly cooked and had a flavor I hadn't experienced at other steakhouses. The sides are plentiful and seasoned well. The banana pudding is the best I've ever had from a restaurant. It's served warm and it's truly made from scratch, not to mention it's absolutely beautiful. The espresso martini was a great ending to the meal and is made with a house made espresso liqueur. The valet parking is a bonus. This is now my favorite restaurant! read more
For our 12th wedding anniversary, my husband made reservations to Helen. I have to be honest. I had not heard of this restaurant. I looked them up on Yelp and I saw a 5 star review from the Yelp Community Manager for my area so I felt confident that it would be good. Well, it was great! Our waiter knew it was our anniversary and he offered us a good champagne to get things started. Their food is made to be shared so the smoked fish dip, mushrooms, ribeye, and dessert was more than enough for my husband and me. Everything was flavorful and fresh. The ambiance was nice as well. Let me begin by saying this place hits different. It is a special restaurant that you must visit while in Birmingham. we frequent here from Florida and regularly come here with family and staff members. The interior is really cool whether you sit upstairs or downstairs. Everything that I have eaten here is next level. Twice I've had the pleasure of sitting across from the kitchen to watch them work. Their menu is diverse and creative. We've had everything from the tomato pie to steak to chicken and everything is always really good. Study the menu carefully to understand what each dish is. Look at the pictures on yelp and other review sites so that you have a good idea of how things are made. These guys are to the commercial kitchen what surgeons are to the operating room. They are intentional with their menu and it shows. The team works well together. Twice, our server has been Feyard. His customer's experience is important to him. He is very dedicated to getting things right. Thanks for that brother. I've attached some pictures. I can't say enough about the excellence of this establishment. Take a few people with you and order a bunch of appetizers on your way to a wonderful meal. You'll be glad you did. And as always, be kind to your servers. read more
This is one of my favorite restaurants in town! My husband and I love to come here for the warm ambiance, friendly faces, craft cocktails, and delicious food. We love to sit at the bar and strike up conversations with the bartenders. Tonight, we caught the late summer menu which was delicious. We had: Oysters - absolute 10/10! No salty ocean taste, cooked to perfection and the vinaigrette on top was just amazing. Angel biscuits - I mean, these are a must have for us. Warm biscuits with cane sugar butter...delicious. Corn ribs - we weren't sure what to expect, but this was like street corn on crack. The sauce was just delicious with a tiny kick but not too spicy. The peppers included were also ridiculous. Not too spicy but so flavorful. Bbq okra - holy moly! Smoked okra with a mustard based bbq sauce. Absolutely delicious. The fried okra slices on top were lovely as well. Short rib - again, holy moly! I'm not a big beef eater but this changed my mind. They gave us steak knives to go with it that were totally unnecessary. Meat fell off the bone with a delicious creamy sauce. I also need to shout out Alex behind the bar! He had great knowledge of the menu, and was cranking out the most amazing drinks. My husband wanted a gin martini with some flair, and he made him a chartreuse martini with a history lesson of the monks that make chartreuse. He was also making drinks from France in the 1800s for the couple beside us. He was such a joy and it was like watching an artist work. You could tell he has a serious passion for what he does! I've been to many James Beard award winners and Michelin starred restaurants in my life and I have to say, the dinner I had at Helen's was one of the best I've ever had! We started with the Angel biscuits. They tasted like the yeast rolls you used to get in school; fluffy, yeasty, divine with the cane sugar butter slathered on them. My husband and I decided to split the 16 oz NY strip cooked medium rare. The seasonings were perfect. We ordered the simmered peas and the Alabama sweet corn as sides. I could have been perfectly happy with a plate of angel biscuits and the peas as my meal. So yummy! We had cocktails with our meal that were superbly crafted. Service was awesome. Everyone who walked by wished us a happy anniversary, even though we had not put that in our reservation. We will definitely be back, Helen! What a gem for Birmingham! read more

Helen is the quintessential Birmingham food experience! Everything from the old southern tableware to the beautiful bar. Our waiter was an absolute expert about each dish. We always start with the warm angel biscuits- you can never go wrong with these! We also tried the famous tomato pie for the first time and were slightly underwhelmed. On this visit we also got the ember roasted mushrooms that we loved, and the stewed romano beans dish and crispy fish collar dish that were okay. We will definitely be back! read more
I fully recommend this restaurant if you're looking for an upscale dining experience. I don't have anything negative to say about anything here. The staff was inviting and friendly. There was just the right amount of checking on us from our waitress. The food was great. They probably had some of the best steaks that we have had. My wife got the filet, which was so tender that you barely had to chew it. I had the NY strip, and it was delicious as well. The sides are family style. We got the cabbage, peas and carrots, and sweet potato. We were happy with all of them. We got dessert to go. If I had anything to complain about, it would be the desert portion size. They were a little small but tasted good. Overall, I am really happy with Helen, and I would certainly recommend eating here. read more
All around five stars! The food, service, and ambiance never fail. Everything here is delicious, but my favorite menu item is the angel biscuits. They taste just like they sound, heavenly. Every dish we have eaten here has been delicious. The staff are also wonderful and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. All of the dishes are shareable, which is great because that means you can try more of their delightful dishes. read more

Go to HELEN! Go to HELEN! Y'all , this place is absolutely amazing. I mean I really loved the entire experience! I met a friend here for lunch and we made reservations.... I highly recommend you do so online. It's really easy to do so. There is no fee to make a reservation but they do ask that you cancel within 24 hours if your plans change. This fabulous restaurant is located downtown, so parking might be an issue depending on the time / day of your visit. I had no issues finding street parking. I don't believe there's a valet option. Since we had reservations, we were seated immediately at a table for two. The table was kinda on the small side but we made it work. I really loved the table decor and that the menu was available via QR code. The vibe of this place is warm and inviting yet really modern. They really did a great job creating the perfect environment to enjoy a nice meal. Ok, what did I order? I went with the burger (no Mayo) , a side of very shareable size mushrooms. Let me just say , if you order these two menu items , you'll be totally satisfied! The burger was simple but so very flavorful. The mushrooms were soaked in Worcestershire sauce and topped with a couple of crispy onion rings. These two paired together were the perfect food marriage! I couldn't stop eating the mushrooms but I did share with my friend.... barely! I can't remember the sandwich my friend ordered but she enjoyed it. She also ordered Brussel sprouts and they were crispy and tender. Prepared just right! I forgot to mention that I also ordered prosecco... it was really good too! My only regret is not ordering a slice of the coconut lemon cake but there is always next time. When we closed out , our server who did a great job advised us of the contactless payment option, which we utilized. It was fast and easy! So the idea is that you order your main entree and share whatever sides you opt for. I went with a group of friends and had no one to split the broccoli with. There is no personal sides option. So I'm stuck ordering a glorified head of broccoli for $15!? Lol. It's roasted with some kind of sweet glaze. I ordered the mussels for my meal (appetizer menu) and it was very good - very light dish. Everyone seemed pleased with their food. The biscuits were the star of the meal. I doubt I'd go back. read more

First time here and it was great. Server was super friendly and helpful. She let me try a few reds before deciding on a glass but her recommendation was spot on. We ordered our own meat entree and ordered vegetable sides to share. Food was delish. Setting was unique. Not too noisy. read more
I adore this new addition to downtown and I've only been able to eat at the bar. The ambience is excellent. The menu is well rounded and the service is top notch. The only real bummer is it's difficult to get a table as is with most newcomers to BHam. I've tried a ton of their menu items and always find myself pivoting back to the steaks. In. Cred. Ible. I will never forget the warm angel biscuits. Truly dangerous. And the desserts!!! Unbelievable. Service was a little weird in the beginning as we waited in the seating area upstairs for our table. We were led there to wait and get a drink until the table was ready, but it took a bit for anyone to come by and take our drink order. The seating area is right by the stairs too, and facing the restaurant, so it's a little odd and out in the open. But, nothing to be concerned about because once you're seated the service is top notch and the food is impeccable. Some of my favorite dishes of the night were the Ibérico Pork and steak. The fish was also delicious. It's best to go with a group you're comfortable sharing with so you can try lots of dishes. The desserts were quite possibly the best part of the night, so save room! read more

I can't say enough about how great Helen is. My fiancé and I celebrated his birthday on a Wednesday evening. Service was TOP tier. We had a reservation, and upon arrival, were immediately seated. The food was delicious. Absolutely order the Warm Angel Biscuits to start - we added the ham, but I would probably nix that next time. For dinner, we had the Kansas City Strip, Shrimp and La Plancha, Brussels Sprouts, and Yukon Gold Potatoes. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu! read more
