We didn't realize Heirloom is a speakeasy restaurant inside a distillery, as there are no signs of it from the street. Once we found the double black doors passed the bar, we thought it was going to lead to the kitchen.. but surprise it leads to the restaurant! The food was great (though you'll need more than just a main if you're hungry) - I had the short rib ravioli, which came with 3 half-stuffed pastas. I had questions about the zero proof drinks and our waiter told me that neither the Dirty piña colada was sweeter than the Fresh Out and noted that the olive brine should stay in the drink as made (I decided to try it w/ the peach cobbler, but ended up sending back). We went for happy hour for a little date night. It's inside Open Road which was a little confusing when walking up from the parking garage. It has a very speakeasy vibe starting with the entrance. I had a spicy margarita that was tasty but very small. The whole glass was overflowing with ice. For food we loved everything. The calamari was a standout-very tender and well seasoned. Double date night. Whoop whoop! I wanted to go somewhere different. So McDreamy and I rustled up our friends and headed to a speakeasy. Now when I say speakeasy, I mean you are going to have to know where to go to find the place. Otherwise, you are going to find yourself standing in the middle of Open Road with your mouth agape. Hint: find the black double doors near the bar. Thankfully, no secret code required. But reservations are strongly recommended lest you have to sit at the door staring longingly at patrons who made them and were being seated. Overall, we had a fun time. The venue was dark and cosy as one would expect a speakeasy to be. Noise levels were moderate to low. Our server was friendly. For Reston, the drink prices were a bit steep. But the food was portioned well (i.e. not heaps of food, rather portions that a human not desiring diabetes would enjoy) and was very good. I wish I could tell you more. But I drank a lot of gimlets, which were delicious, (not the DD for a change) and the evening ended fuzzily. If you can find it, go to Heirloom. Overall we had a very good experience. The disappointments were the following: red wines were served cold (really?), while the short rib was fall off the bone tender, it had very little flavor, the tuna carpaccio was mostly a salad light on tuna and lastly the shrimp gnocchi amazingly fluffy and tasty, had only a few pieces of shrimp (the waiter pointed out that the shrimp comes chopped up, as it was being served) and was too oily. The Wagyu burger was excellent as well as the focaccia, chocolate dome and berry crisp. Not so sure we'll return. read more

I made reservations for my husband's birthday at this restaurant and it did not disappoint. It was the first time for both of us dining at Heirloom. There is a parking garage that's connected to the restaurant and there's free parking after 5pm in the garage - that's a plus! We had a bit of a hard time finding the entrance of this place and had to ask the host where the 'secret entrance' was at. After finding the entrance, the ambiance of the restaurant is dark and moody. It's definitely a great spot for celebrations. We ordered several dishes to try: -House made herb focaccia .... 5/5 -Pan roasted sea scallops .... 5/5 -Red wine braised short rib .... 5/5 -Apple tarte tatin .... 5/5 Everything we tried was really good. My husband made a reservation to celebrate a friend's visit, and I was extremely impressed. Each course was excellent and suggested based on our individual tastes. We started with cocktails and the focaccia before moving on to entrees of short rib ragu, sea bass and steak. My husband's steak was slightly overcooked but that's easy to do as he prefers Black and Blue. Each dish was superb and well presented. My husband and I visited Heirloom last night and really enjoyed the experience. The vibes are very West Elm after dark. It is a small restaurant, but a very good quality one. Service was excellent. We started with the happy hour calamari, which had multiple interesting and tasty sauces. It was a very good size appetizer for $10 on the happy hour menu. We also ordered the focaccia, which had 3 spreads that were very flavorful. For our mains, I had the duck with the potatoes. The duck was thin sliced and was in a very flavorful sauce. The restaurant is dim lit and cute inside--it's fairly small, but we had reservations and were seated right away at a booth for four ppl. Overall food was okay. For starters, enjoyed the Blue Bay Mussels and Oysters Rockefeller--both well flavored, I kept dipping my bread in the mussel sauce. The Oysters only came in a set of 3, which I thought was an odd number and not enough for us--why not serve half dozen like most places. Beef Carpaccio and Caesar Salad were okay, nothing special. For entrees, the Spicy Bucatini and Shrimp Fettuccine pasta dishes were good but the portions are small, not shareable size. Most disappointing was the 24 oz. Prime Porterhouse Steak--so bland with no flavor, extremely underwhelming and a waste of $78--I expected better for this one. The Smoked Gouda Mac and Roasted Mushroom side dishes were pretty good. Since we were celebrating a birthday, the server brought out a small complimentary dessert with a candle, which was nice! We tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding which was delicious. This is an Intimate restaurant that you would take a date for Valentine. The menu is not overwhelming but dishes are on pricey side. The service is great but at times slow as they are friendly with their customers. We got the Mussels and Tuna Carpaccio to start. The mussels are big and juicy compared to others I've eaten at other places. The tuna is a bit too herbal tasting for us. I kept hearing amazing things about Heirloom that had recently opened so I had to come check it out and it absolutely lived up to the hype!! To begin with the food - there was no going wrong with this menu. My friend and I split all the food we got and it was the perfect amount for us. We got the home made herb focaccia, mussels, wild mushroom ravioli and the chocolate dome - all of which were amazing. My personal favorite dish was the wild mushroom ravioli - the flavors were absolutely perfect. The service was a 10/10 as our waitress was super kind and helped us make the right decision on dessert as that chocolate dome is a must eat. The vibes inside were also phenomenal - the lighting is super dim inside and definitely gives off the ideal speakeasy vibe. Stopped by tonight and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Honestly I couldn't believe this was inside of Open Road and I absolutely loved the speakeasy vibe. I came with 2 others and we ordered the focaccia, the burrata, the sea bass, the scallops, the spicy bucatini (actually spicy and very good), the sticky toffee pudding (sooo good), and the apple tarte tatin (sooo good and very shareable). Everything was absolutely delicious. I honestly wasn't expecting much since RTC restaurants can only get so good, but this was downtown-DC-level tasty. Not to mention the extensive cocktail menu. (I tried both mocktails and they were both delish as well). I thought the whole "speakeasy" thing was just gonna be a big gimmick, but Heirloom honestly delivers impeccable service, amazing vibes, and quality food. Head to the back of the brewery, and you'll find a door with a rose handle. Once you open this door, your speakeasy experience begins. You'll pass through a second door and be greeted by the host. I recommend making reservations since it is always busy. The ambiance is romantic with a retro-modern look. All tables are candlelit, which can make it a bit dark if your eyesight isn't great. True to speakeasy tradition, they have excellent cocktails and traditional drinks, and the bar looks fantastic. The menu is limited, but the food was great. I love a good mac and cheese, and theirs did not disappoint. Heirloom is a great place for a date or a girls' night out, but I wouldn't recommend it for families with young kids. This review is just for drinks however, as we did not dine here. I chose to order an espresso martini after verifying that they do make them with real espresso. With espresso martinis being all the buzz (badum tss) lately, I've found a lot of places skimp and use cold brew or something else to give the "espresso" flavor, which always disappoints me. This place was the real deal. I ordered... let's just say more than one espresso martini because they were so good. The glasses they were served in were beautiful too. I've now been three times, once for business, once for trying all of their drinks and one with my wife. I was surprised at how good the food was for what they call a speakeasy. I think it's more of the people that appreciate good drinks and higher quality food. I' think the Heirloom cocktail is probably my favorite, it' tastes like a mezcal Negroni but less Campari tasting. It was great with the oyster Rockefeller. That's my favorite appetizer on the menu. I love the seabass, and the chicken. My last visit the filet was so so. But the layered potatoes are very interesting and delicious. The technique is very different from any potato preparation I have seen. The last waiter asked me if I wanted any sauces and I asked if they had any Au Poivre and he said I have no idea what that is. Seriously?!? He was a bit odd and his service was lackluster. He's the only one, everyone else is fantastic. The scene is modern but simple. The dress is casual however I like to dress a bit nicer for respect since the food is elevated. We were recently staying near Dulles Airport for a trip. After seeing a lot of great reviews and the menu, we opted for dinner at Heirloom. We loved the happy hour menu and decided to do a reservation within that timeframe. Loved that happy hour was available at the bar and tables! The cocktails on the HH were great! The different types of glassware for each type of drink were stunning. We wanted to do a little bit of everything so tried the HH meatballs, short rib sliders, focaccia bread, mushroom ravioli and sea bass. Everything was incredible but we loved the sea bass the most! It was super cute, the food was good, and we had a great time....but the cocktails (the main draw, allegedly the best in NOVA!) were just ok. I had the burger and the burrata, which did not disappoint. But literally all the cocktails were some variation of tequila or bitter (shrubs, amaro, aperol, etc) so I ended up just not picking a cocktail at all, to my great disappointment. My friends who did get cocktails (who like bitter and tequila-based drinks) said they were just ok. Warning if you are looking for this speakeasy style restaurant in Open Road Distillery at RTC as there are no signs and you enter via a black door towards the back of the restaurant just before the restrooms. Of course, you can ask the hostesses and they will escort you back. It is a nice looking restaurant with a big bar to the left and tables to the right. There is also a nice sized event space that can hold approximately 14-18 folks so if you have a holiday/special event this is a good pick. I won't go into details as we ordered several dishes as appetizers but I will say they were all very tasty (gnocchi, ravioli, foccaccia, etc. Personally ordered the KC Strip and that was cooked on point and a flavorful piece of meat. We waited to come here as restaurants need time to work out the kinks. Recently, my husband had a knee replacement and is still recuperating. As he got better, I started thinking about restaurants where parking wasn't a hassle which would make it easier for him when it came to walking. Normally, we would have walked to Heirloom but...he wasn't up to that. So, we went by car as a garage is just across the street. Heirloom is located inside Open Road. In other words, a restaurant inside a restaurant. Open Road is basically a sports bar and brewery themed set up. Heirloom is more upscale and has a totally different menu. We made a reservation for 4 p.m. (which is the time Heirloom opens). It was the only time available. When we got to Open Road, we told the staff at the host stand that we had a reservation and they asked if we knew how to find it. We said it was our first time trying it. One of the staff members walked us over to it. The entry is a large double door with no sign on it. You enter and have to go through a second set of doors. When we entered, the bartender said they were just finishing their set up. No problem. Within a few minutes, we were taken to a side room that had a few tables. We were given the only two top but the table was good sized and didn't feel cramped. The other tables were well spaced. Our server (we never did get her name) was friendly, efficient and helpful. The lights are dim here. Each table has a small battery operated candle, which I used to read the menu. My husband pulled out his phone and realized that he had forgotten how to use the flashlight feature. Our server asked to see his phone and she turned it on for him. When he was finished looking at the menu, she even shut it off for him. Dim lights usually signal a romantic vibe. However, the background music, while not overly loud, was 70s disco music. To me it didn't go with the decor but we didn't mind. For starters, my husband got a glass of Pinot Noir while I got a mocktail called "Vanilla" which consists of: "fresh lemon vanilla, basil soda". It all worked well together. My husband said his Pinot Noir was good quality. Then, we got an appetizer (they call them "small plates"), "House made herb foccacia" which came with: "whipped ricotta, onion jam, sauce vierge, plus chopped black olives". We also added for $5 "Edward's Surryano ham". The foccacia was unique compared to others. It was moist and soft. We added the toppings to our pieces and all worked well together. (For anyone wondering, "Sauce Vierge" is described as --- this is from Wiki---"Sauce vierge is a French sauce made from olive oil, lemon juice, chopped tomato and chopped basil.") For our main courses, I had "Pan roasted Chilean Sea Bass" while my husband had "Hand Cut C.A.B filet" which comes with braised shallots plus a side of your choice. He chose "roasted mushrooms". His steak was good quality, cooked medium rare as he asked for and it was moist and tender. He really enjoyed the mushrooms. My entree consisted of: "carrot ginger puree, garlic spinach, sauce Vierge, lemon beurre blanc". I liked this dish. The fish had a nice crust and a soft interior---easily cut with a fork. The carrot ginger puree was well done as both flavors were quite clear. The spinach was okay and lemon beurre blanc was barely noticeable. We actually had some room for dessert and we chose to share a Crepe Suzette which consists of: "orange marmalade, creme Anglaise, Grand Marinier" Our server brought the plate with 2 spoons. It was kind of messy to eat but delicious. We were glad we gave it a try. This was a splurge of a meal at $160 before the tip. By the time we left, the place was getting busier and a bit louder but not as loud as Open Road. We would consider going yet again. read more

This is my third time visiting Heirloom, but my first time writing a Yelp review, and Heirloom is the reason.  The food, drinks, service, and atmosphere were all stellar, every time I have gone.  The restaurant is designed to have a speakeasy vibe, and it is tucked away inside of the Open Road distillery in Reston . This time, we did the Big Back Special and ran the gamut on Happy Hour plates:  Crispy Calamari, French Onion Dip, Wagyu Meatballs, Moules Frites, and Short Rib Sliders; plus we added the Beef Carpaccio because why not. I only took pictures of three of the dishes because I was too busy eating.   Crispy Calamari: Flaky and light, crunchy not soggy, crispy on the outside, and tender, perfectly cooked squid on the inside. The seasoning was spot on--savory with a little hint of spice--and the two different  dipping sauces took it to another level.  Easily one of the best calamari plates I've had in a long time.   French Onion Dip:  Creamy, rich, and bursting with deep caramelized onion flavor, it's the best version of a classic dip I've ever had. The balance of savory and slightly sweet notes from the onions is perfect, and the creamy dip makes the ultra-crunchy potato chip pop even more. These stole only suggestion I have would be to serve thicker chips so they don't break in the dip.   Wagyu Meatballs: From the first bite, you can tell this dish is going to be extraordinary. The texture is incredibly tender--juicy and buttery, just as you'd expect from high-quality Wagyu beef. They practically melt in your mouth. Seasoned to perfection with a rich, savory depth, umami bursts from each bite. Served with lightly-toasted, buttery focaccia (perfect for soaking up every--and I mean EVERY--last drop of sauce) Out of the five apps we tried today, all were great, but this was my favorite. Maybe.   Belgian-Style Mussels: Plump, tender, and incredibly fresh--they soaked up all the rich, savory flavors of the broth beautifully. The white wine, garlic, shallots, and fresh herbs created a delicate flavor that is smooth and subtle. It was the full Belgian experience.  By the time I was done, it felt like I was in cozy bistro In Bruges (Can we reserve judgement on Bruges until we've seen the place?)   Short Rib Sliders - I tried to save these for last, but I interrupted my first app to sneak a bite, and it did not disappoint.  The meat was unbelievably tender, slow-cooked to perfection, and packed with rich, savory flavor. You could tell the short rib had been braised low and slow--it practically melted in your mouth with every bite.  Served on soft, toasted buns with just the right amount of tangy slaw and a hint of sauce. Each bite was a brief trip to comfort food heaven. Okay this one may have been my favorite. Beef Carpaccio: Razor-thin slices of beef covered with a light sauce and micro greens to freshen the dish, please try this if you go to Heirloom. This is my third time having it. We have ordered every time we have gone. The crispy, crunchy gaufrette potatoes bring it full circle. Can I have multiple favorites?   As for the drinks, I have never been underwhelmed by any of the drinks served here.  And I've had my fair share.  If you decided long ago that cocktails aren't for you, I politely suggest that you try a couple at Heirloom and revisit that conclusion.  Taste, presentation, alcohol content, and everything in between--including specialty ice cubes, tiki mugs, stencil art, and diet fireworks--were delightful and EFFECTIVE (our bartender must have had hands like Jeff Dabe).  All around fantastic dining experience.  5/5. read more

When you walk in, there is a majestic door that makes it seem like a best kept secret. The ambiance and decor is nice. A little dark to my liking but would be good for a romantic date. Let's talk about the menu. I got the daiquiri cause I like fruity drinks. I was a bit surprised because it was orange but it tasted amazing. All the entrees we had were amazing, and I can say the mussels they used are very meaty and taste fresh. The desserts were good but not great, which is why I knocked a star. We celebrated our anniversary here and it was also my first time at a speakeasy! The vibes were darkly lit but classy and fancy (especially with a beautiful bar display). I definitely recommend making a reservation as the restaurant got crowded after we got seated. The food portions are pretty small but we were both impressed with the quality of the pasta dishes that we ordered. I recommend the spicy bucatini (it's not that spicy and I loved the texture of how they cooked their guanciale) and the mafalde genovese (if you love truffles, this is for you!!!!). I also thought that their cocktail was so fancy, especially with their rose shaped ice cube. We finished our meal with the chocolate Hazelnut dome and the service was amazing as they wrote "Happy Anniversary" for us on the dessert plate and had a candle for us too! A hidden gem in Reston! This stylish, dimly lit speakeasy positions themselves at "elevated comfort food" and is behind black doors inside Open Road Distillery. The drink menu is extensive and unique/creative which I loved, and the food is intentional, yummy and well-priced. I sat at the bar and the bartenders were all personable and open to giving any suggestions or answering any questions the other person in my party had. They gave wonderful recommendations for drinks! I had heard good things about Heirloom so I went with coworkers on a weeknight recently. Finding the entrance is fun, it's behind unmarked doors in the brewery in Reston Town Center. Once inside, we were quickly seated. Service was pretty decent. The menu had many items that looked really good, so we tried several different appetizers and entrées and shared. They're somewhat of a speakeasy, so we started with cocktails; I got a Zombie and it came to the table looking fun, with a flame, but the flavors and potency wasn't what I recalled it being. Everything else was amazing! If the menu said something was spicy, it definitely had a nice kick. The pastas were amazing, so was the sea bass and definitely the shrimp! But the tomato sauce that the mussels was some of the most amazing tomato sauce I've had; spicy and very enjoyable! Save room for dessert, they have some great eats for that course as well! Came here after someone I knew had recommended it. The restaurant is behind two black doors that resemble a storage unit but walking through those doors you're led a room with a door with a rose knob and several picture frames hung on the walls. Walking in, I was surprised how small the interior was but not surprising as it is a speakeasy. We were seated in a back booth and our waiter was great. Super attentive and super easy to chat to. The food was good. I really do recommend getting the focaccia bread, the baked shrimp is just a shrimp scampi sauce (wouldn't recommend it), the short rib was super tender and we swapped out the asparagus for mushrooms, and the scallop risotto was just okay to me (taste is subjective). It was my friend's birthday so they wrote happy birthday on the creme brulee plate which was a super cute touch. we decided to go to Heirloom after watching a movie at Look Dine In Cinemas! it was around 9 PM when we left the theatre and walked over to Heirloom. I was a little surprised as to how busy they were on a Wednesday night, but we were quickly seated & they took our order before the kitchen closed for the night. we ordered the wagyu sliders and the steak tip pasta. the wagyu sliders came in a set of three. the meat itself was in meatball form so that was interesting. we enjoyed them nonetheless! the pasta was delicioussssss! the sauce was a lovely compliment to the steak & I thought it was better than the ones from Sweetwater & the GAR brand. this was such a great spot - I loved their decor & that they had so many options for patrons of the restaurant such as an arcade. the bathrooms were also beautiful! ugh, this place was just really nice overall! read more
