SO disappointed. I called ahead and was explicitly told a contact lens fitting would be $55, confirmed several times as long as there were no changes to the brand or prescription. There were no changes to either, yet at checkout I was charged $184, and that's after they said they charged my insurance. I've never paid that much for an eye exam or fitting in my life. This felt like deceptive business practice: staff assured me of a price, then charged a much higher amount without clear explanation. When I raised the issue, the response was unsatisfactory and didn't resolve the overcharge. I would not recommend going here. If you need to, then confirm pricing in writing prior to the exam and double-check the final bill before paying. read more

UPDATE: Brandon is probably the best manager you'll find around. Not only he took time to read and understand my concerns, but he also made sure to call me and find a solution. Brandon explained to me that the waiver customers usually sign pertains to any breakage during the installation of new lenses. However, what I experienced wasn't supposed to happen. Brandon made sure to special order the frame that I wanted replaced, kept me updated along the way and also ensured that my lenses were added to the new frame in a matter of minutes. I can't say enough how thankful I am and glad that everything worked out. Brandon and his staff are the best and truly care. I'm appreciative of their time and help. I'll definitely be back. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I got an eye exam this past November (2024). Long story short, I STILL haven't received my eyeglasses that I paid out of pocket for. I got an eye exam and a contact lens exam in case I wanted to order some contacts later on for special occasions. I'm a flight attendant and don't wear contact lenses on the aircraft bc of the dry air conditions and my eyes being more sensitive. Heights Optometry ended up billing my insurance as I was going to order contact lenses only. That was the first blunder. When I went back in to order the frames I wanted (I special ordered them bc they said they no longer had the style in stock), they had already put the claim through to my insurance, so I didn't haven't any eye glass/frame benefits to use. I understand mistakes happen, so I went ahead and ordered them. My mistake. I paid out of pocket since they had a deal going on and I just wanted to get my glasses at this point. Since this point, I have spoken with several representatives and they each give me a different excuse as to why it's taken so long to get my frames in. I even called last week, and asked to speak with a manager, and I got a call from someone at a completely different optometry place in La Mesa. I have called back multiple times (today included, no one is answering the phone) and have yet to hear back or receive my glasses. At this point I would like a refund so that I can get my eye glasses elsewhere. read more

Go some place else. They took about 6-8 weeks to get my progressive glasses. After getting them I saw dry bubbles (like a bad window tint with dry bubbles) on the lenses. Brandon (manager) will not work with me to solve the issue nor want to give me a refund. Instead, they gave me three options, non of them will resolve the problems. I had to call my insurance to complain about Heights Optometry. I gave them my glasses back and I still don't have them with me. read more

Very competent staff, and a beautiful office. My initial eye exam went very well. A great selection of eyeglasses. The only issue I had was I decided to leave the office to consider my purchase of new frames. When I called back, a person in the office answered and I asked to be transferred to the woman who initially showed me the frames. I was unable to connect my phone call with her. Because of this, I decided to shop other optical shops for frames. Heights Optometry did send me my prescription, and I was able to find some frames I really like from another office. Great location. I cannot recommend this place enough. Went here as a new patient for an exam. Forgot to bring a mask, no problem, they gave me one for free. The optician who helped me with the retinal scan was very friendly. Dr. Walton did my exam, and she was incredibly warm and took her time to explain the retinal imaging and answered all my questions. I can tell she's passionate about educating patients on their vision. They have a large selection of glasses in all sorts of styles and colors. I wish I could remember the name of the guy who helped me pick them out-he made the glasses selection process fun! I would give 10 stars if I could. The staff and Dr. Walton were terrific. The business is aesthetically pleasing and waiting area is very comfortable. For years I had uncomfortable contacts and I knew they just didn't sit right on my eyes. There were from a former optometry business in Hillcrest. Heights staff and Dr. Walton did a wonderful job of examining my eyes, checking my prescription on my current glasses and fitted my contact lenses to check for accuracy and comfort. I felt completely comfortable during all my visits. I have to mention that my prescription is very high, so it's a tough prescription to fill and to be accurate with. I know my body when it comes to my prescription being off. I had aired my concerns and was ignored at previous business and it comes to no surprise that Dr. Walton found that both my contacts and glasses were over prescribed. For years, I had actually strained my eyes and it was effecting my vision. The Heights staff also went to my insurance and found that I was deemed medically necessary for contacts so I only had to pay for my co-pay. That was music to my ears!!!!! My contact lenses are custom, I wear them for 6 months - I can't get those daily wear type of contacts. My average cost for 2 pairs of contacts is $380.00. My eyes are super high maintenance! I gave Dr. Walton a big hug after I got my contact lenses fitted - they felt sooooo good on and I could actually see my text messages on my phone without having to put on readers. She has the BEST new eye-checking equipment, and qualified optometric assistants who helpfully explain what each machine is telling them about my eyes. Had a great experience here with the front staff and Dr. Davis. Flora at the front desk patiently answered all my questions before I came in for my eye exam and was able to fit me in same-day. I'll be honest - I was drawn to this place because out of all the places Tricare covered, this place looked SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING. My first time here was great though! I was a bit nervous, but the lady that took pictures of my eyes was super nice & made me feel very comfortable. Unfortunately, I didn't catch her name. My appointment was with Chantelle, & she was awesome! Spoke very clearly, answered all my questions. & the appointment wasn't long at all. I definitely would come back & make another appointment with her! The longest part of my appointment was literally choosing frames. Another lady came to help me, but once again, I didn't catch her name either. I appreciate that she tightened my old glasses! & she even helped pick out some frames! There were so so so so many cute & trendy frames! I ended up choosing some gold circle ones. Overall, I highly recommend this place. Everyone knows what their doing, & they do it quick. I never felt rushed, & that says a lot since I feel like I need to rush things like this. Definitely coming back!! read more

I have been getting my comprehensive eye exams at Heights for many years. I wear contacts, in my right eye for distance, and in my left eye for reading. This has never cost anything extra. However, this year, without notice, they charged an extra $200, indicating my evaluation is a level three, and insurance only pays 10%. Hence, my 20 minute evaluation cost $459, and I was responsible for $230. When I questioned this the day of my exam, they said that my insurance had changed the coverage. I called Eye Med insurance, and they said that they have not changed the coverage, that Heights charged an extra $200. I called Heights back, and this time they told me it was because we discussed eye drops for my dry eyes. This seemed ridiculous so I asked for the owner to call me back who I'd worked with in the past. Instead, the new Dr called and all she said was that they started charging extra this year for Level 2, even though the exams haven't changed. She said she could reduce it $43. I will definitely not be going back! Be sure to find out the price before you go to Heights! read more

Not sure how they're rated so high, their customer service is awful. I accidentally forgot my mask and only realized it as I walked in for my appt (Mask mandates had been lifted, I'm not a complete jerk). I asked if they had any available and only got a grunted "we do but they're $1 donation" from Sky? who was sitting at a table by the door and hardly even looked up from her laptop. I wasn't greeted to begin with and after telling her that was fine I'd pay the $1, she did nothing but sit and stare at her laptop. Where exactly was I supposed to get the mask? She didn't point me in the right direction and no one else was paying me any attention. It was awkward so I decided to just walk back to my car and hope I still had some in there. Luckily I did but I really didn't feel welcomed. To make matters worse, about halfway into my eyewear consultation flor who was helping me realized that she pulled up the wrong patient information and was using the profile of another person who would be coming in later that day so we had to start again using my actual information. Okay fine moved on. I inquired about the possibility of getting prescription lens on a new pair of sunglasses (I emailed a picture and they were just supposed to check with their lab). Fast forward over two weeks later and I heard nothing so decided to call and check on that and on my glasses. The woman who answered the phone was so rude. The order was promised a few days prior and instead of even looking anything up she automatically said that if I didn't receive a text then she had "nothing for me". I had to explain to her that I wasn't signed up to receive texts for her to bother to do her job. When inquiring about the possibility of getting prescription lenses on the new sunglasses, she said she couldn't help me because the person I emailed wasn't in the office and that she had no idea what I was talking about because the email I sent it to doesn't even exist (it actually does, she just wasn't aware). Completely rude. Btw The total cost was $575 for literally 4 plastic lenses seeing as how I provided my own frames and they took OVER A MONTH before I got them back (Don't come here if you need glasses anytime soon)-they came back without the transitions I paid for and they wanted me to wait another month for the correct lenses. One pair was missing transitions entirely- how do I know they're not missing every feature I paid for??? I don't and you probably won't know either so now my credit card will have to deal with their complete lack of decent service because I won't be going back. read more

I have been going to Heights Optometry for three years. The main reason I go is to track my eyes as I age. I want to make sure I catch any changes before it becomes an issue. They take an image of your retina and it is the most interesting thing to see. The doctor found a spot that isn't a problem now, but could some day become a problem and I love that we are able to track it with the retinal imaging. Note: The retinal imaging is probably not covered by insurance so it will be $35 out of pocket. I highly recommend getting it. If nothing else, just to be able to see inside your eye ball for the first time in your life (I'm assuming you've never looked in your eye before ... if you have looked into your eye before, then you know how cool it is). I like the selection of glasses, but they are a bit expensive. I haven't had glasses for over 15 years and I wanted to splurge. The glasses were about $350 after insurance. But I did get all the bells and whistles (transition lenses, extra coatings, etc.). My glasses were recently warped ... don't ask ... and they were able to switch out the lenses for $25. Which means I didn't have to buy anything new. I've had my main glasses for two years and I love them. The fit is perfect because the team will hand adjust the nose bits to sit lightly on your nose. I don't think I've ever had glasses that fit properly before these. It's a bit of a thrill to wear glasses that fit right and don't pinch your nose. Everyone is super nice and they come across as though they truly enjoy working there (it's not always a given). Thank you everyone for being so kind and caring. Today I had booked an appointment online to pick out prescription sunglasses to work with my contacts. Turned out, when I arrived, that I needed a different prescription to make that happen. Dr Davis fit me in, which was awesome. Michael handled the sunglasses fitting and ordering. He also advised me up front that my sunglasses would not be covered by insurance. I knew that already, but it was good that he'd checked. I left the shop relieved that I'd have new sunglasses soon. I've been a patient at Heights for years now, and I always appreciate seeing the same staff of competent and friendly people. read more
