What a mess....Dr Thomas office has closed and he has moved his patients to a new office who are nothing but a JOKE. I need my contacts and had called 3 times now to have them get my records so I can order more contacts. My prescription is less than a year old and I refuse to go get it done again I have been a patient for several years and did not get a notification that my patient records had been transferred or sold. Extremely disappointed in being treated like this. read more

VERY FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE! Although I liked Dr. Thomas himself, who was very kind and professional during my exam, I have to give 1 star due to my frustrating experience with his reception staff who run the entire process of glasses and contact ordering. Judy rushed me as though I was inconveniencing her; and she was also sarcastic when I asked about frame options, and what specifically my insurance coverage offered. Later, it got worse. After a month of waiting (missed phone calls, and no return calls), all while they already had my money, I am finally told they have a sample set of contacts ready for me to come pick up. I was told I should wear them for a week before I place a large year-supply order, in case something went wrong. So I just followed their directions, and said okay. I verified the brand of contacts over the phone, which is the same brand I have been wearing for 2 years now. Sheila ensured me they had my supply waiting and all I had to do was come and pick them up. However, when I arrived to pick up my 1-week sample supply, it was a completely different brand and I was told I HAD to schedule a fitting appointment for a fee of about $100. Judy argued with me about the brand saying I HAD to have the new brand because the doctor said so, even though I'd just spoken to another clerk (Sheila) on the phone the day before who verified my preferred brand. WHAT THE HECK?!?!?! Why is no one on the same page here??? And WHY do I need a "fitting" for the EXACT same pair and EXACT same prescription contacts that I've had for the last 2 years?!?!?! When I asked that, she said "No, that's not your old prescription. It changed. Look, it's written right here. You need a fitting." Well, I think I know my own prescription since it's on the cover of every single contact I open every day! I could not believe this woman was trying to convince me that my prescription was different for the last two years!!!! Well, regardless of that rediculous argument, they didn't ever say there would be an additional fee until I was "stuck" having to pay it, and "stuck" with a brand I didn't even want! I was so frustrated and upset that I asked for a reimbursement of my money, which they'd been holding for a month, and a copy of my prescription so I could go elsewhere. Here's the cherry on top: Judy refused to give me my contacts prescription. Even though I paid for an exam and went through an entire exam, she would only give me my glasses prescription and specifically wrote on the paper "GLASSES Rx ONLY". The only way I could get my contacts Rx through them would be to pay the triple figure "fitting" fee. REDICULOUS!!! RIP OFF!!!! PLEASE - GO ELSEWHERE!!!! I wasted an ENTIRE month of my life and got nothing out of it but a big headache. read more

This place is a rip off! They charge $110 for a contact exam then a seperate "fitting" charge of $110 and tell you that you have to come back multiple times (SO INCONVENIENT). Then try to pressure you to buy a years worth of contacts. I have been wearing glasses and contacts for 18 years ... and have NEVER heard of a seperate fitting fee. They wouldn't give me the contact prescription without paying the fitting charge. So I walked out with the glasses rx only that I had just gotten 6 months earlier. On top of that it took me an hour and fourty-five minutes to get through all that. I went to Costco that afternoon, and got an eye rx, contact rx and 6 months of contacts for $75... and was in and out within a half hour. NOTE: The Costco Dr. and Dr. Thomas both came out with the same results on my prescription. The service was perfectly fine (besides the long delay from my scheduled appt) ... but the cost is just insane. read more

Dr. Thomas and his staff (Tanya and Judy) are simply great people. I trust them, as they've been working together for decades. I like them, as they're all extremely personable. Their office is very modern and clean, and Dr. Thomas is extremely intelligent and has good chair-side manners. He's very charismatic. I highly recommend this team... read more

Fantastic service & selection! I have gone for many years and have recommended Dr. Thomas to several friends. This is a boutique operation and they cater to you personally while taking your eye health seriously. It is not a big-box store or a drive-through. In my experience there are always additional fees for contact wearers and if you have good insurance, as I have, you will be covered. I wear both frames and lens. Dr. Thomas & his staff are reluctant, yes, to give you your prescription so you can take it to a discount site or center to get your glasses or contacts. But the service is very personal in a way we're hardly accustomed to anymore in medical offices. I wish I had a personal physician who was so conscientious. They do remember your name, they do not treat you as a number. I have received nothing less than gracious, knowledgable attention here. The doctor is impressive, and his assistant, Judy, can fit frames to faces better than any other personnel I've encountered in any optometry office in 25 years of getting frames. While I've been looking over a dozen frames she just zeroes in on the right one for my face and has called the vendor for me, taking the extra time to see if they have other colors I might like. She's crisp, personable and awesome. If I moved I know I wouldn't get the service I've received here. I would definitely miss them. read more

I actually enjoy getting my yearly eye exam and picking out new frames because Dr. Thomas and Judy and the other staff there are so friendly and sweet. They have a great selection of frames and give personalized attention that is hard to find these days. if you are looking for a great eye doctor and prefer the kind of service where they remember your name and are happy to see you upon each visit- this is the place for you! I journey down to Mission Valley just to go here and I live up in the Del Mar area! read more

Should've checked yelp reviews before wasting my time. Better eye glass selection than most privately own opticals. Went back for to order contacts, and they wouldn't give me my prescription without a "sitting fee!" An extra $100 just so dr Thomas can take a look in my eyes?! And by the way, no insurances will pay for it bc they know it's a rip off ! Just went to Costco and sat thru another contact lens exams with dr slikker. read more

I recently had my glasses repaired here and I must say it was a delightful experience. Judy was very diligent in tracking down a new pair of side pieces that had to come from Austria. It turned out that she got an upgraded design for the same price as the old ones and now my glasses are better than new. Judy was great and kept me informed all along the way. Highly recommended. read more

great response to the cov8d 19 outbreak and everybody was very helpful and nice to me

Walked in with unscrewed Ray-Bans. They kindly welcomed me and screwed em together! Kind service.

I've been coming to Dr. Thomas's office for a few years now and he is the best. Pays attention to detail and is very patient. I tend to have quite a few questions and answers them all. The ladies at the office are the sweetest, and always greet me with great smiles. I highly recommend coming here if you are looking for a wonderful, patient and detail oriented Dr. with a great staff! read more

he's a cool optometrist. i've been going there for 5 years. only because i used to work in mission valley and kept going there after i no longer worked in that area. one time my left eye got inflamed and i had to go in asap, it was no problem they were able to accommodate. the doc gave me this solution no charge and sent me on my way. the first time i got contacts everyone in the office was really nice in helping me get used to them. they didn't make me feel dumb or anything because i was such a scared-y cat. they're always willing to work with you, answer questions, assist with anything basically. i've gone there with and without insurance. it's nice to know i get the same special treatment regardless of whether or not i'm covered. read more

Been taking my daughter there for 4 years. Very friendly place, easy to make appointment.

I absolutely loe Dr. Thomas. I have had bad experiences with optometrists in the past and was delighted when I moved here and found this place. Dr. Thomas explains everything he does so that you understand what's going on and is always interested in hearing feedback. The only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars is because there usually is some sticker shock with them. Since I only go every 6-12 months, I always forget to ask what my other options are for contacts, etc. Either way, the service you get here is totally worth a little extra money for me because my eyes are so bad and Dr. Thomas understands how frustrating it can be when you don't have the right lenses. If you ask upfront about costs, there's no reason why you should come away feeling scammed. I've recommended them to all of my visually challenged friends and have only heard positive feedback. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Thomas for more than 10 years. He and his staff are great. They have always squeezed me in when my insurance was ending or when I had an emergency. He is never too busy to see someone. Several years ago, when I had a serious eye condition, he made sure I got to see the right specialists. I enjoy every visit there. They've been in business for years, there's a reason why....They do a GREAT job & CARE! read more

What a wonderful experience! Dr Thomas did such a thorough eye exam and is so caring! His staff, Judi and Sheila, spent time helping me find a beUtiful, light weight frame. They explained the differences in lens types and materials and I opted for the new custom design progressive lenses. Vision and comfort are outstanding! I highly recommend this professional, caring and quality optometry office! I'll definitely be returning! read more

Dr. Thomas himself is a nice man. But the office itself is a complete scam. All I wanted was a contact lens prescription, and they charged me $125 for the "fitting" (like I haven't been wearing contacts for almost 10 years) before I could obtain ONLY A PIECE OF PAPER WITH MY PRESCRIPTION ON IT. Plus, all that the "fitting" consists of is giving you a pair of lenses and looking at them a couple days later. They charged my insurance fully as if I had ordered lenses from them when I didn't. On top of that, they gave me a prescription for glasses (NOT lenses), and it wasn't even my correct prescription and was WAY too strong. read more

Dr. Thomas has enabled me to once again have great vision. I have worn contact lenses (hard, gas permeable, toric) for the past 35 years. My vision even with correction never got to 20/20. Dr. Thomas changed that! Following a very thorough exam I was fitted with toric lenses and allowed to wear them a couple days. I then returned for a followup fitting where my Rx was checked. Dr. Thomas made changes and ordered new lenses that each time improved the clarity and distance in my vision. He was willing to make even the slightest modifications which resulted in my kick-but vision. I have returned each year for the exam and new lense fittings and have been given the same consideration and attention to detail that was demonstrated to me on my first visit. (The mall or big box optometrists may have better prices, but I have never been given such personal attention.) I have come to expect incredible attention to detail and excellent fitting from Dr. Thomas. My vision acuity and satisfaction with the fit has never compared to that which I have experienced with Dr. Thomas. PS. Dr. Thomas must be a great employer, too. I see the same staff, Judy, Tawny & Sheila on my annual visits. And, I appreciate that they recognize me and genuinely welcome me back! Highest recommendation to anyone who wants EXCELLENT vision care and courteous treatment. read more

I have used contact lenses and glasses for over 10 years, and I have been to many optometrist offices, but Dr. Walter Thomas's office is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!! Not only are they so incredibly sweet, genuine and helpful, the Dr. really takes his time with his patients, and they are not money-grubbing at all. If you purchase your contact lenses through them directly, the Dr. will see you for free the whole year, if need be. I also ran out of contact early, and I'm going out of town, and really needed a pair. They worked with me to get a pair to hold me over until next month - just out of kindness. I HIGHLY recommend this office to anyone looking for great service and happy people! I have several friends that go here, as well. read more

This Doctor's Office provides the best service - even when the Doctor is on vacation! Even though I'm a new patient, I'm a long time contact wearer who is very pleased with the transition to Dr. Thomas and his staff. I switched to Dr. Thomas last year because the service fell off at my previous office. I was pleased to find good value after 20 years of designer prices. The fee structure is fair and straightforward if you ask, Dr. Thomas is very personable and knowledgeable, and the service is top shelf. Aloha read more

HORRIBLE!!! THESE PEOPLE ARE A SCAM!!! I went in and tried to use my VSP insurance and they still tried to up sell me by telling me they would not give me a perscription for contacts unless I paid $95 for a "fitting fee". EXCUUUUSE ME??? I have been wearing contacts for 6 plus years and have been to 10 different eye doctors and never have I been told I have to pay for the doctors "time" to fit me!!! WHAT A SCAM!!! I can fit my own contacts thank you. All I wanted was my exam and prescription. I AM REPORTING THEM TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND TO MY INSURANCE! WHAT A SCAM! read more

I appreciate Dr. Thomas' extensive knowledge & genuinely pleasant demeanor. The enitre staff was always helpful. I went there when I lived in San Diego first for my glasses & then for my contacts. I never had any problems with my VSP insurance covering what was under my plan. I wish I could still go here, but I don't want to spend my precious time in San Diego going to the Dr. I will certainly go back to Dr. Thomas when I return! read more

This is the best optometrist I have ever seen! Dr. Thomas is very pleasant, and knowledgeable in his field. The atmosphere of the office is very calm and relaxing, and his receptionists-- Sheila and Judy-- are fun to talk with! The prices here for the service and the products (glasses and contacts) are fair. read more

This is the place to go for your eye exams. Dr Thomas was on vacation when I went in so I had the pleasure of working with Dr Divine. She certainly lives up to her name!!!!!!! Dr Thomas and his staff are AMAZING! They went way beyond my expectations in helpfulness & friendliness. I had scratched lenses, & they were able to have them replaced within an amazing time frame. They were very knowledgable and thorough, & I will continue to go to them whenever I need to replace my glasses. I received the kind of customer service that is almost impossible to find anywhere these days. Thank you again, Dr Thomas and staff! read more

I had the worst experience over there. I tried to reorder contacts through 1800-CONTACTS and I got a call from Judy the receptionist saying I have to come in for an exam again even though I went and had a fitting on 4/20/10. You have 1 year from the date of your exam and they have to write you a prescription for a refill. I called 1800-CONTACTS and told them that and they said to go to their office and ask for my records.I went down there and she REFUSED to give me my records so I demanded them because they belong to ME. The doctor came out and gave them to me along with the wrong prescription. Judy was arguing that I had a -1.5 and a -2 and she was completely wrong.(time to retire lady) I'm a -2 and a -2.5. I put on the lenses daily, I should know. They finally realized they were wrong and gave me my paperwork and prescription. She was so rude saying inappropriate remarks to me. I read some of the bad reviews and they definitely deserve it. I guess they really need the $$$ if they have to lie to patients telling them they need exams when we don't. read more
