$85,000 Later -- Still No Working EV Chargers After 15 Months When our family made the switch from gas vehicles to EVs, we hired HCI to install solar panels and three Tesla Powerwalls. From the start, I asked them to include the EV charger installation in the overall plan. The account representative pushed back, claiming their best practice was to handle the panels and batteries first, then the chargers separately -- and that the city approval only required the battery installation anyway. I insisted on seeing the full plan. They refused, saying they didn't have time and needed to move forward with permitting. That refusal turned out to be a costly mistake -- for me. After paying over $85,000 in cash (yes, we received a rebate, but that doesn't soften the blow), we still cannot charge our EVs at home. The root cause: HCI installed the batteries on two separate circuits without performing a proper load calculation for the garage. The branch circuits feeding the garage lack the ampacity to support the dedicated 240V circuits required for Level 2 EV chargers. Now we're looking at a subpanel upgrade or a new circuit run from the main service panel -- work that requires additional PG&E approvals, more time, and more money. All of this could have been avoided with basic planning upfront. This project started in November 2024. It is now February 2026. We still have no working EV chargers. When my concerns were escalated to the owner, I was met with arrogance rather than accountability. It was a deeply disappointing experience from a company I trusted with a major investment. I recently completed a major home remodeling project that began in 2022, which included adding solar panels to our home. During the process, we discovered that we also needed to replace our roof. My brother-in-law recommended HCI Solar and gave me one of their rep's (Anthony) number, whom he had worked with on a solar project for one of his properties. Anthony was extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the entire process. We communicated to Anthony that our remodeling project timeline involved having the PV system installed last. Anthony was not pushy but suggested that we sign the contract first and that the work could begin anytime afterward. He clearly explained the reasoning and steps needed to submit the paperwork to PG&E to ensure we were grandfathered in under NEM 2.0 (which is expected to save us thousands of dollars) With the contract signed in March and a deposit made, the work could commence whenever we were ready. I contacted Anthony again in late June '23, and the work was completed in July '23, as expected. Anthony also assisted in finding a reputable roofing company (Advanced Tech Roofing), which made the process much smoother. Both the solar and roofing work were completed quickly and efficiently, with the roofing project taking less than a week, and solar installation completed in two days. We have just passed the one-year mark since the PV installation, and we have experienced zero issues so far. The quality of work and customer service provided by HCI Solar was outstanding. Anthony definitely went above and beyond and I highly recommend HCI Solar for anyone considering solar panel installation. Great team who delivered throughout during all phases - from site review and analysis, permitting, right up to installation and project closeout with a detailed handbook of our system. Jose and the team were very professional and efficient on the day of installation and did the whole job with little fuss in one day (we have an 11-panel system). We've had the system running since September 2020 and so far everything is running smoothly and as expected. Jose's team also did great post-install follow-up to do minor touchups at the sheetrock adjacent to the electrical panel. I always appreciate proper project closeout as an Architect, especially after we had already paid for everything. We shopped around and found HCI to be pretty price competitive. We are very satisfied with the professionalism and quality of the work, starting from the solar panels themselves right down to the app setup so that we can track how much power we are generating. I was looking for a solar system for my home and contacted various companies. All the companies were helpful but HCI Solar went above and beyond in their service and sales. Anthony contacted me and gave me an idea of what to expect before we started the process. One of the installers came to my home and inspected my property and roof. Next, Anthony called me and gave me a date of when he would have the quotes (around 2 days) and he met those dates without any delays. He came to my home and answered all my questions in person and those that he could not, he took the trouble of contacting his folks to get me that information. He patiently answered all of my questions. We finally decided on Enphase Micro Inverter i7+ with LG350. Within a few days, I got a call from Anthony confirming the time and date of the installation. The installers came early and it took them a couple of days to get done (the first was to install the wiring and inverter) and the second was to complete the solar panels. The installation was extremely professional and the folks were very helpful and answered any questions that we had about the panels and inverter. When everything was installed, Anthony came over to set up the eGauge system. He explained everything succinctly and ensured everything was working. After the installation, I got a call from Anthony ensuring everything went well. The system was went live on March 07, 2020. We have been extremely happy with everything thus far. Recently, when I changed my ISP, I lost my egauge online connection. One call to Anthony and it was taken care of. As I said, outstanding company and excellent sales and service. I'm so happy that I went with HCI Solar my neighbor got his solar through Costco and I was looking at going through them and pleasantly surprised when I compare the difference to my solar system from HCI compared to my neighbors to Costco was way more affordable and top quality panels and installation and they were a pleasure and easy to work with. HCI was very good. Ian recommended the system that would provide the best value to me and let me know my options. Marvins initial inspection was thorough and insured that I had a good roof and sufficient electrical system for the installation. On the first day Rob, Jairo, and Robert got all the panels installed and wiring complete. Very quick and clean. They even suggested a better layout than the initial design. They were patient with me as I checked all the panels and inverters before they went up. I was watching that they did all the RTVing to insure my roof kept its seal. Jose came to work with the inspector and provided all needed support to insure the inspection went flawlessly. Once the system was complete and the inspections were done, there was a delay due to PG&E but it wasn't too much and the whole process completed in a few weeks. It was very exciting to see my first full sunny day of power production! (Note: It helped me to see my uncles annual solar production before I got my system so I was prepared for the fact that in the winter I can expect my system to produce about 25% less power on a day of full sun than it will in the summer) Over all, great job! After researching for several months and receiving several bids, we went with HCI Solar because of their transparency on cost and information. Despite being a smaller solar company, their bid was surprisingly one of the most competitive in terms of costs and product quality for the panels and equipment. Also, their delivery of service was relatively quick as my family's solar was connected to PG&E within a month whereas the other bids estimated anywhere around 3-5 months for this process. This is important to my family as we want to maximize solar production in time for the summer months when the sun's ray is stronger. This is my first ever Yelp review, but these guys were so great I just needed to do it! Our existing solar system conked out about 6 months ago. I thought it might be an inverter problem, but could not find ANYONE who was willing to come out and do a simple service call. I finally tracked down HCI, who was listed as a vendor of the same brand of inverter. They were pleasant, professional, and extremely helpful. Jose came out, spent an hour examining the system, and found some bad wiring under the panels themselves that were causing the problem. Total cost of repair - $100! He also answered all my questions about longer term upgrade options including battery storage. He even put together a couple quotes for us to see, even though I was clear it would be at least a year or more before we were ready to do anything. Needles to say, when it's time to upgrade (we can double our output on same footprint!) I will be calling HCI. read more

I've asked them to stop and they still keep calling through their dummy companies (Solar America & ZeroDownSolar). If HCI uses such illegal business practices at front door, it is easy to imagine that they do not follow safe building codes practices and leave you high and dry once you pay. Installers were great when they finally got booked. Problem was it took them several months to set my initial install date. Post install was a crappy experience again when their wrap up guy showed up and was a real prick about wanting to see in my house for the final inspection. Nothing he needed to see in there of course for that final sign off. He got pissy and then covered my circuit panel and meter boxes with literally over a dozen redundant stickers. Real passive aggressive crap. Wish I'd taken a photo of it before I peeled them off. System itself is otherwise fine. read more

Had a great experience in getting my solar installation done via HCI. Ok so here are the steps for all would-be solar buyers: 1. determine your "needs"... basically look at 12 month past history of electricity usage 2. contact LOTS of installers 3. compare quotes only after they come to your home and provide a proper quote and project timelines (throw out the cheap internet ones since they are just looking at a google view of your house and you may not get a qood quality install since its sub-contracted out or items maybe added later on once you are committed) HCI solar was great to work with. Anthony and Jose came multiple times to my house. though initially they were high in price, once they understood my needs better, they tweaked their quote quickly to become very competitive (not cheapest, but i felt they did the best job of explaining the process, were meticulous with their project work and honored their timelines) they have very good installers who did the whole job within a day. whole process incl. signing, permitting, installation, final checks might take a month or so. definitely get a quote from them and tell them Andy from Sunnyvale sent you. read more

I absolutley love this company. I had Jose come out to my house a little over a month ago. He added up all 12 months of my electric usage and figured out how many panels I would need to offset all of my electicity. I had spoken to Solar City and Vivint. I didn't like that Solar City used only string inverters and one kind of Solar panel. Vivint told me that I was going to have 100% offset. When in reality I was only getting about 70%. Jose figured everything out so I really was getting a 100% offset. He also had a variety of panels and inverters to choose from. I bought the solar world 280 watt panels and the enphase 250 microinverters. Everything went smoothly from the agreement to the permitting, the installation, and the inspection. HCI was in contact with me every step of the way. The installation was really fast and his installers did an amazing job. Thank you Jose.
