    Kekoa's Special (dakine)

Not bad! They have a lot of variety on their menu and I love that they have 3 different portions to choose from. They offer delivery on Doordash as well if you live in the are! I ordered the Kekoa's Special in the smalled size, dakine. I got it with rice and mac. This was my lunch, so the portion was just right for me. The beef had a good balance of lean and fat. The sauce was a sweet thick teriyaki sauce and paired well with the beef and rice. The mac salad had a bit too much black pepper and overpowered the taste, but it was not bad.

6.95 for this side of veggies.

Seriously!!! $6.95 for this side of veggies?!? Did they get distracted and walk away half way through. I get "shrinkflation" but this is ridiculous. Very sad indeed.

We moved to west Salem a couple months ago and love to get this for dinner. Everything is always mad fresh, and while we typically have to wait a while in the drive-through, I promise it's worth it. ALSO, there was a sweet brown haired gal that working the window this evening my wife and I would like to shout out, there was a line to the street, and she was killing it like a pro, thank you miss! (around 6:30 pm drive through if the manager wants to give her a raise ;))

First they charge an extra $3 for tots instead of fries. As you can see in the photo, I got fries and no tots. The delivery service kindly reimbursed the $3 so kudos to them! The fries were not crispy and had nothing going for them other than being greasy wimpy potato sticks which did nothing for me and ended up in the trash. The burger patty is about a quarter inch thick, similar to something you would get at a fast food restaurant and was overcooked. There was so much sauce on the burger that there was no way to touch or hold it without getting it all over my hands and I had to hold it over the box to keep from dripping it all over me and the floor. Not grease or burger juices (there were no juices as the patty was very dry) just an overload of sauce! Perhaps that was to cover up the fact the burger was cooked dry. I doubt they will get anymore of my business and I cannot recommend them to anyone. This was a huge disappointment of a meal.

Service at the counter was efficient and quick, and all the staff was friendly. The interior decor is so much nicer than your typical fast food restaurants, and the materials used help to create a more hushed environment than the typical plastic surfaces. I went with the spicy deluxe -- a spicy chicken sandwich, with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, and tomato (and the little pickles). In my opinion, this is far superior to a just piece of chicken slapped between two plain buns. The coating on the chicken was good and crispy, and it had a nice mild spice to it (I added Sweet & Spicy Sriracha sauce to it, though). I thought the standard waffle fries could have used a few more seconds in the fryer, but they were just crisp enough, with good potato flavor; so I won't mark down for those. Will definitely stop here again!

So, we ventured out after work and some much needed retail therapy to Dave's Hot Chicken. Off first glance, the restaurant is very eye-catching. Its neon lights on the exterior draw you in and the colorful-graffiti like interior (and exterior) is playful and exciting. There's ample seating indoors and outdoors and the service is quick. The staff is kind and extremely helpful. So, all that was a plus. Our server even gave us his recommendations and helped us narrow down our order. Of which, for me, was their #1 - two piece chicken tender basket. I got my chicken with a Lite-Mild spice level and it included a side of fries and Dave's Signature sauce. Their chicken batter is coated with a dry rub of spices, which, sadly, wasn't my favorite. I only got a Lite-Mild spice rub (my best friend got extra hot - she loves spicy food), but I just was not a fan of the overall batter / combination of spices used. Maybe if it was a wet rub it would have been a different experience - but sadly, the dry rub wasn't really anything to brag about. Outside of that, the actual chicken itself was tender. The fries were fresh and extra crunchy and I really enjoyed Dave's special sauce. All in all, it was a decent overall first experience. I'd go back again for just their plain chicken tenders, the fries and the sauce. Also, the price points are super reasonable - which is always a great thing.

Came in today at 8:10 like usual. Immediately told half their menu was, surprise surprise, not available, and that we could not dine in despite being open for another 50 minutes. Everything went about as usual until my daughter asked if she could get a refill, like she has multiple times before, while we were waiting on the food. The girl running the register, who somehow managed to get our 2-item order wrong three times while taking it, refused to allow her a refill. When I asked why not, she stated it was store policy that refills were only allowed for guests dining in. When I pointed out that she was not allowing us to dine in, she smuggly replied "that is correct." Rather than demand a manager, who presumably wadn't present since it was only the two teenagers running the kitchen and register, we've decided this will just be our last trip and advise all of you other yelpers of the substandard service this place has made a practice of providing.

The chicken fingers are huge, much larger than the usual size you get in other places. The serving of fries is also huge. The drink that comes with the combo is small. Diminutive, even. It was too much food for me, but I didn't know how big the chicken fingers are here, because I had never eaten here before. Same with the fries. Two of me (and I'm not a small guy) would have been happy with what I ordered. I ordered Cajun sauce to go with my chicken and that was a terrible mistake. I am from New Orleans, so as you might imagine, I've eaten a lot of Cajun food in my life, and the sauce did not resemble anything Cajun I've ever had. I daresay it tasted more like Mexican hot sauce than anything else, but mostly, it just tasted bad. And not that hot, either. I went back up to the register and paid for another two containers of sauce, and this time the selection was more mainstream, that is, honey barbecue. Which was good. Not great, but, you know, good. The dining area is very basic, very spartan, some inexpensive chairs and tables and a muted flat-screen TV (with closed-caption) on the wall. The single staff person at the register was very solicitous, too much so, frankly. Cloyingly nice, almost to the point of being obsequious. But perhaps I am just too jaded and cynical, other people may love the immediate high level of friendliness and familiarity. Country music was playing loudly while I was eating. After a while I realised that it was not actually country music, but rather, Christian pop music. If you're on the Pepsi side of The Great Soda Schism, you'll be happy here. If you're on the Coke side, you're not going to be happy. I like Coca-Cola, so I ordered a lemonade, which turned out to be not lemonade, really, but water with almost no lemon taste in it. It came out of the dispenser, so maybe the tank was almost empty or something, I don't know. It was water with the faintest taste of lemon. That's what I got for a drink. There are a great many restaurants that do wonderful things with a chicken. The chicken-lover landscape offers up an embarrassment of riches. With that in mind, I think I'd pick another spot for fried chicken. Not because the chicken was bad (it was not), but other things about the place were not particularly appealing to me, and it's not as if the main drawing card here (which is the bird) is so completely fantastic that you brush all the shortcomings aside. The chicken isn't that good, you know? It's good, but not so good as to make you forget about everything else.
