A nice hidden gem in Forest Grove, this Hawaiian spot does not disappoint. I love this style of food and have tried many places throughout the Portland metro. The service here is good, but what stands out to me is that I feel like I am sitting down to a family meal! The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and on busy nights, expect them to be full. When it is busy, the sound level is good - we did not struggle to communicate with each other, which surprised me due to the size of the room. There looked to be another space through some doors, but I didn't adventure back there. The food is delicious and you can tell that the chef has spent quality time ensuring that his execution is great. I have ordered numerous dishes, the pork and chicken are excellent, however the spam musubi left something to be desired. If you are in the area and in the mood for some Hawaiian food, stop in, you wont be disappointed - just be sure to check the hours first as they close between service periods some days. read more

Had been in years ago, well before the pandemic and remember enjoying the meal. Came back solo for a quick to-go bite to eat and did the Korean fried chicken with mac salad and rice. Breading was legit and sauce was very tasty. It was a little sad to see only a few couples dining in and the bar closed because of how amazing the space is. Only saw a single front of house employee and it just seemed kinda lonely. Will definitely return because places like this need to stick around. We went for lunch and service was quick as there were no other people in the restaurant. The waitress did start by listing off a bunch of menu items that were not available, which was a bit surprising. The food didn't take long to come out after ordering. The Mana bowl is an absolute steal for the price. I got the ahi tuna, kalua pork, and mac salad as a side. Ahi was good. Kalua pork was good. Mac salad was a bit gritty. Had to add sriracha to the whole bowl just to feel something though. I did find that the dynamite chicken was a bit rough but it had a good flavor profile. We were excited to try this place and made the 30 minute drive to check it out. Unfortunately they were no longer serving any alcohol despite all signs that advertised that they do! The food was pretty good. The kids loved the saimin. Partner loved the poke bar bowl. I got the Aina pack and the salmon katsu was delicious! The spam was missing. The kalbi was sweet and savory all in one (as it should be). The kimchi was bold without being too spicy. The restaurant was clean eith lots of light wood and an outside patio. So so good! I've been wanting to try this place for awhile but we never go to Forest Grove. I actually thought it was too good to be true, that such a place could exist in such a small town, but it's real and it's wonderful. I went with my husband early in the evening on a Saturday. We were one of just five tables seated in the restaurant, with just one host/server who was calm, friendly and kind. The vibe was super chill, island music playing and beautiful photos of Hawaii on the walls. Since my husband is fasting, I had to eat solo. I was starving and could have easily ordered more but I was reasonable and just ordered the garlic furikake fries to start and the kalbi plate lunch as my entree. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The flavor was just right, not overpowering and the portion was great as a starter. I was able to eat about half before my plate lunch arrived. The kalbi is always my favorite thing to order and this did not disappoint. The meat was perfectly marinated and cooked, so tender and just absolutely delicious, 10/10. The rice, Mac salad and green salad were all great companions. And the presentation was beautiful and the portion plentiful. A taste of the Hawaiian Islands in the heart of Forest Grove! And I'd say they're pretty spot on with Hawaiian taste and flavor too! My Hawaiian locals may not agree, but I feel its close enough. Here's a breakdown: + Location + Located in the heart of Forest Grove, walking distance from the university. Its pretty much street parking around the area, although I did notice a small parking lot nearby. I believe its shared with the other businesses. ++ Dining & Atmoshphere ++ The place has quite a few clean tables for two/four (movable). Hawaiian decor, as well as a bar near the entrance, and a rear patio. I've only been here once, but I can imagine during pre-covid times, and seeing university students making this place their local hang-out. Luckily it wasn't busy. +++ Tha Grinds +++ Garlic Furikake Fries ($5.18), crispy fries with a sprinkle of furikake seasoning, and of course with bits of garlic! Aloha Pack ($19.67) with Chicken Katsu, Kalua Pig, and Coconut Shrimp. All three items were made well: Chicken Katsu and Shrimp were nice and crunchy! And the Kalua Pig was steamy and salty. Likely shoyu salty I meant. This is an excellent sample plate if you've never been here and cannot decide on what to get. Its definitely filling! Lau Lau Plate ($20.70) oh boy this plate was even more filling. It came with two succulent pieces of tender/ fatty pork; All wrapped up in a tasty banana leaf. They were either simply steamed up or pressurized, and had that salty Kalua Pork flavor versus a smokiness I was sort of expecting. Not a deal breaker though, and still a delicious plate! Loved it! ++++ Staff & Service ++++ We had excellent service (if I recall her name) from Ruth. She would come back to check on us from time to time and even refilled our water glasses. I mean, it was a late Saturday afternoon lunch, so we were the only customers there really. Its an ideal time to stop by, if you'd like to chill with some enjoyable food, a cold Kona Longboard beer ($5.18), and a bit of privacy. Overall, food total plus tip came out to about $60. A bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion. To Hawaiian locals, this place may really be a 3.5 star kind of place for grinds, but it's all we've got for the area. My tip, go to SakèOne (see my ROTD for them hehe) a couple of miles away, do a tasting first, then come here after for lunch or dinner. Kampai! read more

I ordered a spicy ahi poke bowl from the food truck for $20 ($17 and 2.50 tip). I looked at my bowl and it was just the tuna on top of lettuce. Zero toppings. I thought that was strange so I went back and the guy acted like he had no idea what toppings are and like I was stupid for asking. Said I could order sides if I wanted but that I must be thinking of a California poke bowl. Hawaiian poke doesn't come with toppings. That might be true, but there's no way that a poke bowl with no toppings should be $17 at a food truck. The flavor was good but the value was not it (and customer service was lacking) . Will definitely order again. The decor and music give this place a nice Hawaiian feel. The only downside was there was one person waiting on all the tables and take out customers. It was a Friday night and even in Forest Grove there was a steady stream of people. She was doing the best she could but she gave us the wrong bill. The spicy poke was good, but the side of extra spicy poke sauce was perfect for dipping to heat up bites without committing to a permanent sweat mustache. I was in Forest Grove for work and was recommended this place by a friend who went to school at Pacific. I don't eat "Hawaiian" food often in the mainland since it's usually prefrozen laulau and Kalua pork. But this place makes their own laulau by the aunties in the back. Once I heard they make their own, it was an instant order and it was delicious. I honestly enjoy the luau leaves more than the meat inside so this was a great ratio of leaves to mean for me. If you're more of a meat over leaves person, this might disappoint a little on the portion size but the flavor is all there. They also had squid luau which I love. Not common to see and I can't imagine someone that doesn't know what it is would want to order it after seeing it, but it's good and you should try it. I'd describe it as a lighter, leafy, green Thai curry. Beers on draft were only $4 as well which is super cheap IMO for a restaurant. My family and I stopped by Kama'aina for lunch. Due to Covid, the seating was pretty limited and the place was understaffed. There was only one employee managing the front as well as serving the guests, so she could only accommodate 4 dine-in parties at a time. All good though. These are challenging times to navigate! In general I appreciated how careful Kama'aina was with adhering to Covid regulations. Only 2 people could go in to order at a time so that social distancing can be maintained. We came as a party of 4 and had to split up. Again, no big deal as this was clearly instructed by the signage. Kama'aina has an extensive menu although some items were unavailable at the time (e.g. lomi poke and lumpia). They had many of my favorite Hawaiian food and combos nonetheless, such as poke, loco moco, musubi, etc. What's cool was that you had an option to buy poke by itself if you didn't want it in a rice bowl. I didn't have much of an appetite, so I got the coconut shrimp with dynamite sauce. What a fantastic snack! It came with 8 good-sized pieces, the coconut breading was really crunchy and flavorful. The dynamite sauce was bomb as well. It had sweet and sour sauce mixed in with a spicy mayo. Great compliment to the shrimp. With few sunny warms days to date, first chance to drop the top and bask in the warming rays on a scenic Wine Country drive landed us in Forest Grove. Cute college and ag town to shop local, though Sunday is a bit sleepy with several spots closed. Lucky for us Kama'aina was grooving with some veritable Aloha grinds, excellent value and quality food. Channeling a recently watched DDD Island episode featuring Lau Lau, a new must-try, the Hawaiian food gods were on my side as this rare offering even in foodtown PDX, remarkably appeared on the menu. At $20.70, a bit steep for lunch, I was not going to pass this up. Turns out this means a heaping 1.5 lbs of beautifully steamed Taro leaf parcels, 2 of them about 4x3" each, packing mounds of moist and tender pork with a little gooey fattyness--flavor, seasoned with Hawaiian salt, liquid smoke. Puzzled by the missing flakes of fish, I asked the waiter if it was missing the Butterfish, and he clarified that it's just a small piece used to season the pork, and sort of melts into it...ok, was sorta disappointed thinking I was getting a surf & turf dish. Couldn't say if there was a distinguishing Butterfish flavor having never tried either alone or in Lau Lau, is that good or bad? I need an Islander to best inform me, but I did really enjoy this dish and would order it again. The taro leaves remind me of dried cole/bok choy used in traditional soups. Was too strong tasting for the hubby but great to get those extra greens in! Just wish 1) Lau Lau was sold by a single parcel, as I ate another 3 meals from this plate, and of course it would be more affordable to the masses to try, especially at lunch; and 2) they offered brown rice for health/diabetics/whole grain diets, I know asking for whole grain mac would really be going too far haha. Mac side could use a little flavor boost, but typical from Hawaiian plates I've tried before. Soy sauce worked to lend salt and some celery for crunch would also help, but added a dot of sriracha for another note beside mayo. Hubby's 2-entree $13.46, Kahlua pork & shoyu ahi poke (+1.55) was excellent. Can't really tell from the picture as the poke was a bit buried under the salad but it was also a large serving...more than entree size at carts and poke places in town., without the pork. Ahi poke had just enough shoyu saltiness, fresh and clean tasting. Add in the Kahlua pork and hubby was super stuffed--we managed to finish both between us, and opted for all salad since my plate came with 2 scoops of rice and single mac which we shared. Ginger miso dressing was not too sweet which we prefer, and again a massive serving of seaweed salad which would cost $5-7 alone in sushi houses. Fort George IPA just $5/pint thank you college town, add another $2-4 in Portland for a pint these days. With full bar to round out a fantastic meal and the outdoor patio beckoning passers-by, it was slated to be open by the following week, Kama'aina is now firmly etched on my dining destination tablet. Authentic Hawaiian food where you least expect it. Food was bomb and servings were huge! We also had katsu and both the Cali and spicy poke bowls, but it was so good we forgot to take a picture. We prefer the spicy one because it's a creamy spicy similar to our favorite one in Hawaii. All in all it was amazing food, clean restaurant and service was great. Although it was short staff, the only one server for the whole place, Miss Ruth was still fast, efficient and very kind with her service. Oh and don't skip out on the dessert lilikoi cheesecake.
