Grind Wit Tryz is a Hawaiian-Filipino restaurant with a simple mission: "Spread Aloha Through Ono Food." Parking is easy with free street parking. The restaurant's sign isn't immediately visible, but you'll enter through a wooden gate that opens to a large outdoor patio. From there, head inside through the main doors to place your order. FOOD: 1. Loaded Bulgogi Fries (4/5): A weekly special featuring waffle fries loaded with cheese, green onions, and bulgogi. Bulgogi had great flavor. The portion is huge and easily shareable among four people. 2. Pork Katsu Curry (3/5): Thinly breaded, deep-fried pork served with two scoops of rice, mac salad, and plum katsu sauce. The pork itself was cooked well, not dry or overcooked, but the dish felt like it was missing something. Some kimchi or pickled vegetables would have helped cut through the richness. It became a little heavy after a while, so we only ate half and took the rest home. 3. Filipino BBQ Pork (4/5): Another weekly special served with two scoops of rice and mac salad. The pork had a savory and tangy flavor but didn't have much BBQ flavor. It also wasn't served as BBQ skewers. Still, the portion was generous, and we had enough to take half home. 4. Combo Plate with ONO Chicken & Garlic Shell-on Shrimp (4/5): The combo plate gives you plenty of options, and they also offer a trio if you want to try more. It comes with two scoops of rice and mac salad. I didn't try the ONO chicken, but the garlic shrimp was delicious and packed with flavor. The portion was generous enough that we took half home. This is more of a fast-food-style setup. You place your order, receive a number, and wait for your number to be called. You grab your own utensils and napkins. Once you're finished, you clean up after yourself and place your dishes at the designated dirty-plate table. Would I come back? Yes! The portions are generous, and I like that they offer weekly specials with different options. I'd also come back to try some of their interesting drinks and ube desserts. Check their weekly specials before visiting because you may find something that isn't on the regular menu!
GrindWitTryz used to be my go-to spot and one of my top recommendations to friends visiting PDX; however, my last few visits left me feeling disappointed. Not sure if something changed when they moved locations but the food and service left much to be desired. Since their new location is a bit far away from me, I ordered a pickup order online. Upon arrival, I promptly made my way to the pick up area to inform them the name under my order. Not only was there no eye contact when handing over the bag of food, but there were no words exchanged as well. We ordered the Hawaiian nachos and the honey walnut shrimp this time. I appreciated that the ingredients were packed separately for the Hawaiian nachos to avoid it being soggy. The kalua pork and the spicy ahi tasted good but the wonton chips were barely edible from being overdone. A lot of them were fried together in groups of 2-4 so we had to manually break them apart. I ended up eating the kalua pork and spicy ahi with rice instead of the wonton chips. The honey walnut shrimp and the rice was good, but nothing noteworthy compared to other places I've tried. The side of mac was on the creamier side and I enjoyed the texture of the macaronis.
It's such a good place to have a meal with friends and family or get it to go. There's plenty of seating and street parking. It can get pretty busy around meal times. You order at the front and wait for your name to be called. But, oh my gosh, I love that one chicken, if there's any fried chicken I crave in portland, it's this. The guava pork ribs were alright. The Hawaiian nachos were okay. I'm generally not a big fan of Kahlua pork since it's plain (there are sauces of course), but I found it to be salty and clash with the poke/chips. Definitely worth trying their desserts and I loved the ube ore cake - I will be trying more.
Ooooooh maaaaaan this place was soooooo good! Parking could be a bit of a challenge during peak eating hours but so worth it. Walk up to the counter to place your order. Find a table and patiently wait for them to call your name so you can finally get some of that deliciousness!!!! Love the island vibes. Garlic Shrimp cooked to perfection. Tender, bouncy, garlicky. Mochiko chicken crunchy with a sweet savory flavor. If you need some down home island vibes with huge portions........you need to try this spot.
ABSOLUTELY "HANDS DOWN" for GrindWitTryz.. Food was absolutely delicious, Portions were portions I've seriously NEVER had anywhere else but this place, Employees were awesome, and the VIBE in this place is amazing. I'm an islander, and it felt like home here :) I recommend this place to everyone and I will definitely be coming back here again!!! Fast service too!!
This place was a 10 out of 10 recommend it to anyone who travels to Portland. The portion was amazing. It was worth the money. The shrimp was crunchy. The pork was seasoned really well. That gailbi was magnificent. Would definitely come back and grab the korean short rib. The weight was pretty long but if you don't get early you're not gonna wait a very long time. They had an indoor outdoor water self serve unless you get their drink we got a few of their drink. I totally forgot which one but they were pretty good as well. I think I got the lemonade guava their portion was so big they had to wrap it with rubber band and it's worth $20 so if you go there definitely try it out the vibe ambience was amazing very open people could come in and out. They're just enjoying food there.
This local Hawaiian hotspot absolutely lives up to the social media hype when it comes to portion sizes. While the kitchen takes its time and the pricing details can be a little confusing at the register, the sheer amount of food you receive makes it well worth the wait. Trio Plate (4/5): An absolutely massive sampler that provides enough food to easily split between two or three people. The container is packed so full that it requires a rubber band to stay shut, with extra items overflow-packed into separate containers. The individual proteins are a bit of a mixed bag, but the deep frying technique is delicious: Ono Chicken (4/5): Perfectly crispy chicken thighs that are deep-fried fresh to order with no old oil taste. However, I felt like the sweet and savory garlic shoyu sauce described on the menu was lacking the depth of flavor I was expecting. Dynamite Pork Katsu (4/5): The highlight of the plate. It also had a crispy light batter with no greasy residue. The spicy mayo and katsu "dynamite" sauce carry the dish, though all the sauce is concentrated on the top layer, leaving the pieces at the bottom a bit bland. Meat Jun (3/5): My least favorite of the options. The egg and flour batter felt sparse, and the thinly sliced marinated beef was tough to chew from the heavy amount of tendon. Sides (5/5): The singular scoop of rice is a massive portion on its own and perfectly cooked. Swapping the second scoop for mac salad is highly recommended, which was delicious, perfectly balanced, and not overly weighed down by heavy mayo. Logistics Tip: Arriving on a weekend afternoon shortly after opening means walking into a very busy place. Be sure to grab a physical menu from the stand near the cashier before jumping into the line to order. Note that the menu lacks transparency regarding upcharges: you may encounter unexpected $1-2 additions for certain premium meats in the Trio combo, as well as a $2 charge to swap a rice scoop for mac salad. Parking is highly limited, so expect to hunt for a spot along the surrounding neighborhood streets.
Came here on a Wed shortly after opening time and there were already two groups ahead of me and my group. The location was easy to find, but as with most places out here, can be a little challenging but doable. The place is big. There's a lot of seating indoor and has an outdoor area with bench seating like back home. Already hitting all the positives. The guy at the register is awesome, reminded me of my nephew. He took our order and gave us a buzzer. We sat outside and within minutes our buzzer went off. On the other side of the register is the pickup area. The guy pointed out each entree and repeated what it was. Even though I already knew what the entrees were, I actually appreciated that. It was good customer service. The food was like kanak attak. The portion was humongous. The poke nacho style wonton chips with spicy poke and kalua pig was broke da mout on point! With 3 of us sharing, we couldn't finish it, but made sure we ate all the poke so no left over lol. We also had the meat jun and garlic chicken. They were just as good. Only thing I was not 100 percent happy with was the rice and mac salad. Rice may be fresh but seemed day old to me and the mac salad needed to be thrown out. I did tell the guy. It was starting to have that sour smell. I know they didn't know, but as a local, we know and we have to support each other so everyone stay happy.
We were so excited to finally give this place a go! It was poppin at 5pm on a Tuesday afternoon when we arrived. Street parking was a little tricky but we figured it out. The setup is order at the counter and then find a spot to eat. They have a nice covered area outside but it was a bit hot that day so we quickly found a nice table in the restaurant. The food was ready quickly and the portion was epic! We shared an order of poke nachos, a side of Mac salad, spam musubis and a mango mochi square and it was definitely the right choice to share. The poke nachos were unreal. The chips tasted like wonton chips and they gave SO much poke. Delicious. The Mac salad was good as were the spam musubis. We were too full for the mochi after dinner but I worked on it over the next two days and it was so delightful. So moist and chewy, perfect texture. My only knock was how sticky/gross the trash/busing area were. I'm sure that's common with the amount of sauce on each plate but it probably should be cleaned more frequently as it attracts flies. That being said, we will most certainly come back!
I love this place and need to try everything on their menu. The best Hawaiian spot in Portland! Every bite is the perfect bite, so saucy, flavorful, tender, huge potions. This is a comfort meal and a comfort restaurant. They have outdoor and indoor seating that's always got a line. The poke nachos are topped over homemade wonton chips. The poke is fully tossed in sauce so there's not a piece of tuna without it. Also topped with furikake. The kalbi beef is great quality and not too fatty which is my biggest complaint at other places. The plates are so big, keep that in mind. 5 of us shared 3 plates and had some leftovers but were left very full
NO QUESTIONS ASKED, JUST COME HERE! Portions are amazing, food is DELICIOUS, and the drinks are a must try! Staff are so helpful as there is just such an overwhelming menu. But I would just recommend closing your eyes and choosing something at random. You won't be disappointed! I loved the Galbi and Honey Walnut Shrimp.
This place lived up to the hype! Been seeing this place a lot on social media and had to check it out before catching my flight. Ordered the Hawaiian Nachos: Portions- insane and you feel like you've cheated the business Taste- 10/10 Ordering - 10/10. Easy and straightforward and the workers are super friendly. Environment- didn't feel like we were in Portland or the PNW Only thing to keep in mind is that the nachos are RICH and pretty heavy. Not a problem but next time I will probably get the Spicy Poke with Rice since the chips offer no let off from the pork and poke. Can't wait to come back
This place is so good! The wait though. I left one and came back to a line that was about 2/3rds shorter a few hours later. Well worth it though. -poke: my least favorite but tasted much better one I ate it with chips, instead of rice. I'm not a fan of overly sauced food. This was overly sauced with a creamy sauce, drizzled with a teriyaki sauce. -ono chicken: delicious! Addicting! Nice big chunky pieces that kept the chicken moist without sacrificing the crunch. - honey walnut shrimp: not bad but no walnuts. The breading didn't stick too well, and the tails were still left on. And for those that care, they did remove the poop tract. - Filipino pork belly: the cashier described this incorrectly. He said it was grilled and then fried but I think it was just grilled. It was delicious, regardless. This was off their special menu and if you like fatty, thick cut pork belly that's basted with a sweet soy and grilled, get it!

Not bad, I thought the chicken was really good and they definitely pack in the portions. I didn't enjoy the beef though. It was too chewy and too many fatty pieces. I'd stick with chicken next time. The poke however is amazing. It's a must order each time. We enjoyed our food on the patio with our dog and it was a nice little dining experience. Service was quick and friendly as well. read more

Filipino/Hawaiian fusion... sign me up. We got here at around 11am and there were a good amount of people already eating. First thing I noticed was the serving size, they were huge!!! Initially I thought they were a bit pricey but after seeing how much food you get it was a great deal. The lechon was tasty and tender. I was looking for a dipping sauce but after tasting it, it didn't need it as the flavor was fully into the meat. The ahi katsu was a good twist to the menu. The curry was also on point. The only suggestion is that if they can improve their ventilation system. The smell of all the great food really sticks to you when you eat inside, it was drizzling that day so we had to go inside. Such a good place to add to your places to eat list in Portland read more

My brother has been recommending this restaurant to us for years and we finally found ourselves in Portland to go. We came in at 1pm on a Sunday, not expecting it to be super busy. We were sadly mistaken. This place was poppin from the second we walked in. The outdoor patio had a good amount of seating available with music and umbrellas. We came with 7 people and ordered a wide variety of food for ourselves. Every single dish was amazing and I would eat again. The portions are HUGE. My personal favorite was the short rib and POG dirty soda. read more
Grind Wit Tryz was the most satisfying lunch after landing at the Portland airport nearby. Our group is visiting Portland for a snowboarding trip from Houston, TX, and Filipino Hawaiian food was exactly what we were craving. Grind Wit Tryz has MASSIVE portions and just dang good food. You really need to come eat here if you're lucky enough to live nearby. This restaurant would do so well in Houston, TX if y'all are considering another location! As a group of 5, we purposely tried to order just about everything to try on the menu. We loved their ono chicken, spicy ahi poke, meat jun, honey calamansi shrimp, teriyaki beef, and ilocos empanadas. 10/10 would come back here again whenever we're back in Portland, enjoy! The food was ok. I was expecting way too much from this place. Our friends from Oregon and the reviews seemed to hype it up. My partner and I got the grilled bbq chicken and the bbq short ribs + marinated beef. Unfortunately, the deep fried chicken was sold out for the day (we came in about 45 minutes until closing so perhaps our fault). I think because of the time we came in- we got kitchen scraps. The short ribs were 90% fat and 10% actual meat. The macaroni salad was incredibly plain, it needed more seasoning - pepper something because it straight up looked it was pasta with slabbed mayo. I will however give a shot out to their poke because I don't eat seafood nor like it and I did give this a try for the fun of it and it was delicious. Again I think because we came in 40-45 minutes before closing closing the service was not great either. I saw the self service bottles of sauce and when I came back I asked the lady for one and she said she had run out when it was pretty clear she was just cleaning up. Fair- you want to get out of there on time. So I asked the lady for hot sauce and she said it was extra and charged me $1.00 per 2.5oz container which is just diabolical in my opinion- I still paid none the less so it's my dusky for contribution to the fiasco. Overall it was mid, I'm used to much more flavorful food in Los Angeles. Ill give it another go whenever I'm in the area at a different time. Perhaps it was a one off day for them. read more
We drive down from Olympia just because we're craving GWT! As someone born and raised in Hawaii, this is one of few places that hit the spot. We'll make any excuse to come down. The food is always Ono, the portion sizes are huge, and the flavors taste just like home. The staff is always amazing - super friendly. Fabulous poke nachos! Sooooo ono! A little taste of Hawaii in the PNW for real Service is super friendly. Been with these guys since their location in Alberta. The new spot on Cully is a lot more spacious for seating. Parking around the area is street/neighborhood but worth the couple loops to find a spot. read more

They play the Hawaiian bangers here as you enjoy your food! Playlist on point, staff is nice and helpful. Easy to order at the counter and utensils and napkins on the side near where you pick up the food. The inside smells like oil (don't wear your nice clothes) and floors a little slippery (raining a lot outside or maybe oily??), but overall I enjoyed the vibes. Trio combo: meat Jun, Ono chicken, salmon Katsu. The salmon Katsu was super crunchy on the outside and tender inside. This was so good! Meat Jun was a little string but not too bad. Ono chicken was very tasty and I really enjoyed the sauce on the outside. Comes with two scoops rice and one scoop Mac. The PORTIONS! In love with the portions. When the lid can't close, that's the portion I like. Spicy tuna poke: had really good flavor and enjoyed the sauce and little kick. Fish was a little stringy though. Wish they had chopsticks here too! It doesn't feel right eating plate lunch and poke with a fork for some reason, but that's just me. Overall good portions of food, tasty meats, and good vibes. GWT gives very generous portions! Their food is pretty good too. I've tried their lechon kawali and the only thing I would change is to have it a bit more crispy (but I'm the kind of person that likes my meat dry-ish). I've also had the bbq pork inasal and that's probably my favorite dish there! I tried the pork sisig- it came with two beautiful fried eggs on top it also came with what I think was mayo under the eggs, on top of the sisig. This took away some of the flavor for me, so I'd recommend getting sisig without that cream sauce. Galbi short ribs had the perfect amount of char. I have my own personal preferences, so really, I give Grind Wit Tryz a 4.5. I still highly recommend. read more

Grind Wit Tryz serves some of the most authentic and delicious Hawaiian food I have had in a very long time. Everything we tried was packed with flavor and clearly made with care. The nachos and the fried musubi were absolutely amazing, and that is saying a lot because I do not like spam at all. Somehow they completely won me over. I was so impressed that my husband and I actually started trying to figure out how we could adjust our commute home from work to pass by this place more often just so we can eat here again. If you are looking for truly excellent Hawaiian food that will surprise you in the best way, this spot is a must try. We will absolutely be back. read more
Wanted to try this place for a very long time, finally got the chance today. I so excited. Order the Trio Plate Combo- Kalua pig, chicken katsu and lechon kawali. Wanted to try a bunch of stuff, also got some poke and for dessert the ling hing pineapple cake. Chicken katsu was fried a bit too long, dried out, made good extra crispy chicken fries that need lots of dipping sauce. They do pork well. Kalua pig needed a touch more salt and a bit more smoke. Nice and moist . Lechon kawali was ono, crispy exterior, moist juicy inside. The sides - rice and mac salad, needs a little work. The rice was too wet, Mac salad had too much mayonnaise. The poke - I'll stick to shoyu poke. This one had too much mayo. The ling hing pineapple cake was heavy, maybe if cake flour was use instead stead of all purpose flour would have made it lighter. I looove ling hing mui but I didn't care for this cake. Family must be working here, a little girl was sitting on as well as walking on the service counter. I'm giving two stars for the two good pork items. I wanted to love this place so much after following them for a couple of years on their journey to get a brick and mortar. For me, the food and people are always 5 stars! I do think that parking at this location can be tricky, and my wife said the bathroom left a bit to be desired. That said, the portion sizes are generous, and everything is top notch. We were able to split the combo plate with teriyaki beef and the honey walnut shrimp (a must get for me!), and we both left very full! Overall, I like the vibe and there are lots of seating options, especially in the summer! It was a great spot to warm up after getting our Christmas tree! read more

Decided to try this place out again, and I think it's our new go-to spot for Hawaiian! We ordered the poke nachos and it was huge! More than enough for two people. Poke was great but the pork was a bit salty. This time we also ordered the ube cloud too, which was not too sweet, but interesting in texture. read more

Food was super steamy hot, fresh, perfect. Huge portions, $20 is affordable for the portion size. Mac salad is kinda sweet but tastes good, the ono chicken was perfectly fried! We used to love Grind and visited frequently at the old location. We finally made it to the new spot for the second time on 9/6/2025. It was very smokey when we walked in, and the restrooms and tables were visibly dirty. We opted for sitting outside. The Cashier was friendly, and our total without tip was $48 for 2 people. We got one combo plate with walnut shrimp and char siu pork, and one ono chicken plate. The ono chicken was pretty decent, but large pieces compared to smaller ones, and the shrimp were very small. The pork was tender, but lacked flavor. It's a major bummer to experience the downhill path Grind has taken, and given by the reviews on Google and Yelp, my opinions are shared by many others. Stopped in to grab a bite. I read the reviews and it was one of the closest restaurants to PDX as I only had a couple hours left before flying out. When I pulled up, I was a bit nervous as this place looks interesting from the outside but once you walk in there's patio seating as well as plenty of indoor seating. I tried their chicken Katsu curry. It was a bit dry and over fried. I would not order that again, but I was surprised by the poke. Nice decent size. It was good. It took a while for me to get my order. It was busy, but I finally went up to ask after 20 minutes to see if my order was ready and it had already been sitting there just waiting for me to be called so I was a bit disappointed. I saw plenty of other food just sitting there waiting to be called to pick up their orders. The restroom was extremely disgusting. I couldn't even use it. The 2nd one was out of order so only one restroom. Staff were just ok. There were quite a few desserts. I wanted to try, but I was already so full. read more
My boyfriend and I finally got to try Grind Wit Tryz and it did not disappoint! Everything on their menu looked so good and it was hard to decide on a combo, but we ultimately ordered the Ono Chicken and Meat Jun. The portions were HUGE and just the right amount for both of us to share. The Ono Chicken had a sticky glaze that leaned on the sweet side and reminded me of yangnyeom chicken. The meat jun was really good and paired really well with the dipping sauce. Street parking wasn't too bad and fortunately we got to the restaurant before the line got really long. the ube thai tea sounded interesting so I tried but it was too milky. not enough thai tea flavor and the ube doesn't add much of anything to the drink. the servings were huge and are def shareable! the ono chicken was deliciously fried and the sauce didn't make it soggy. it gets heavy after a few pieces so I had a lot of leftovers. the mayjah moco was huge as well. the pork was fine, not much flavor and it was loaded a ton with other meats which were all ok too. the food here is too heavy for my boyfriend and I to want to come back but i'm glad we tried this spot! read more
Ordered takeout online right around opening. They are located inside of the building where the sign is. There is a small gate just to the north of the building on the corner to enter into. It was super busy inside, just 30 minutes after they opened and cars were parking and piling in while we were there. It is street parking around the area, in a bit of a rougher area. Service was prompt, quick and helpful. However, our utensils didn't get included with our to-go. We orders the Poke Nachos and the Short Rib Plate. The chips and tuna were ultra fresh and the sauces on top were fantastic. Insane size of portions. However, I wish they would have added chopped veggies for the nachos like English cucumber and avocado. The spare ribs had great flavor but a lot of fat, didn't love the freshness level of the rice nor the Mac salad. read more
