Drove up to Hawaiian time today, handwritten sign on the door says not opening at 11 AM. The door was unlocked, it's 11:20am. So, I went in. No one came to the register. Now, it's 11:30. Finally the cook behind the counter says, "We're not open." Another customer walks in from an online food order and says "Is my food ready?" What appeared as a manager, says "Not for another 15 minutes or so." Guy asks for a refund. Meanwhile, cars pulling up to go inside to place orders. Not sure what happened here. Went to this location and had a horrible experience. We ordered a Ali and a regular size of the huli huli chicken. For the regular I requested no Mac extra rice and instead for double Mac. The fixed this no problem. However we ordered two drinks and when we went to get them we found that the machine was out of carbonation and syrup so we let them know and after waiting a good ten-fifteen minutes with them trying to fix it we went to the counter and requested a refund as it would not be ready during our stay. The worker Bella who I assume is the manager on shift or shift lead was extremely rude when we declined her offer for us to get one of the Hawaiian sun drinks due to medical dietary needs. Practically threw the paper with the refund at my friend and then refused to give a corporate number or number to her supervisor. Food was extremely dry and flavorless, soda machine was disgusting, multiple lights were out, multiple tables were dirty despite having just opened. This was a go to lunch place with some former coworkers but I haven't been since COVID. Was looking for something to be delivered for lunch and was excited to see they deliver to my address (I live a little off the beaten path) My husband and I each had the Kalua Pork lunch plate. I substituted mac for his rice as he is not a rice fan. Not sure if it was the packing or the driving but his sauce had completely spilled out of the container, luckily it didn't spill into the mac. We came from Hawaii less than a year ago. I guess the creator calls it Authentic Hawaiian plate lunches, but I tell you, it is so far from authentic, it tastes strictly Mainland. The only thing authentic is the names of some of the food. They have a Regular size plate, Alii (which offers three scoops) and Dakine (which is super small). Dakine does not mean small in Hawaiian pidgin. The teriyaki sauce tasted like shoyu and some sugar, and was extremely watery. Teri sauce is usually syrupy, thick like pancake syrup. The Mac salad was salty, mayonaissy, and peppery. My husband got the teriyaki beef and kalua pig. The Teriyaki beef was not cut like back home. It was small pieces like bulgogi, and was lacking ginger. They didn't have lomi lomi with the kalua pig. And needless to say, the whole restaurant was lacking Polynesians. The hāole girl at the counter didn't even understand what my man was saying. When I worked in a Japanese grocery store, I learned the lingo. How else do you give authenticity. Hawaiian Time is definitely on some Hawaiian Time. I bet the workers don't even know what the phrase "Hawaiian Time" means. Never again. It was rubbish to put it nicely. 3ed time they have messed up my order. I Called and told the person on the phone that our order had been messed up the last two times we have ordered from them and for them to please take note of exactly what I wanted. He told me he was the manager and he would make sure it was done properly!! I Ordered chicken and vegetables with extra chicken no rice and only one scoop of macaroni and I wanted two orders of that. Sent with extra teriyaki sauce. delivery guy gets here and I have no sauce whatsoever. Which every order I have gotten has always had sauce in it when I didn't ask for extra sauce. ‍ So I call asked to speak to the manager. He said well I know your order was done right because I made it. I said OK but I wanted the sauces and I didn't get any. He said OK well this is on the cashiers to put the sauce in. I am not sure if it was an off day or what but our experience was not that great. When we arrived there was maybe like 8 other people sitting down eating and most of the tables were dirty and hadn't been cleaned for people to dine at. They had no ice and no soda machine and offered luke warm water. My chicken was just ok it was really fatty and dry . The rice and the mac salad was good. Went in and its an order at the counter type place then they bring your grub. I ordered the Huli Huli Chicken with a side of macaroni salad..and rice. Food came fast and they gave a nice amount of chicken but way too much white rice..small bit of mac, they should do more mac then rice. Chicken was nice, mac salad was OK but didnt strike me as being anything specially "hawaiian". Place wasnt too clean. Average..if you love white rice you will love this place. read more

I patronize this location and the one on Wallace. There is more parking at this location but more venues too, and the slots are tight for a full-sized truck. They can get super busy around the lunch hour and I was spooked by the difficulty of social distancing, last visit. Who doesn't like things Hawaiian? Not many people. From what I've experienced, Hawaiian and Polynesian food tends to be tasty, filling, and features delicious glazes and seasonings. With that in mind, stopping in to eat at Hawaiian Time along OR-22 where it has a name, west of I-5 slightly before it takes one into the center of Salem, seemed like a plausible idea. I had Hawaiian Time's huli huli chicken, served as a combination, along with a soft drink from their machine. Huli huli chicken is essentially their teriyaki chicken and it was good. The quantity of meat provided was also respectable. The other items rounding out the combination platter are white rice and macaroni salad. The white rice was just sort of there, unless kicked into gear with some soy sauce. The macaroni salad tended toward the sweeter side, but it was very tasty. The service was routine and forgettable, meaning there were no issues. The price was reasonable, as was the wait time for them to call out your order. The Hawaiian Time store sits back in a strip mall and, once you've pulled into the strip mall, you can't miss the store, owing to the Hawaiian floral motif painted onto the stucco walls. Inside, the eating area is spartan, but it's also very airy because of windows both in the front and the back, as well as tall ceilings. Because of this and the cleanliness, you might want to eat your food here and, whether you eat there or take out, the food will be given to you into this interesting recyclable clam shell. O.k., I see I forgot to involve L.A. in this discussion. First, one can't argue with Hawaiian backyard luau type food and the good food had at the tacky Polynesian dives of yesteryear's Los Angeles. That's where and when I discovered this type of food. Second, it's weird that I grew up in the mainland U.S. city that is the most connected to the Hawaiian Islands in terms of flights, yet I've never been to Hawai'i, always opting to go to Florida instead. Third, remember those stupid teenage "books and authors" jokes, like "Under the Bleachers by Seymour Butts" or "Down the Yellow River by I.P. Freely?" Well, as I pondered eating here, the joke from that very stupid teenage collection of jokes entitled "Hawaiian Pleasure by Kamanawanalea" came to mind! Well, it's time to grow up, so maybe it's better to phrase it this way: Q: "What time is it?" A: "Hawaiian Time." I'd say I'm at 3.5 stars with this branch of 7 Hawaiian Time stores in Oregon's Willamette Valley, with that being the overall rating for this store to begin with. I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but Hawaiian Time is definitely ok and I would eat here again. I'm giving this place a very strong 3 stars. read more

I ate here for the first time with a friend tonight, based solely on the fact that we hadn't gone here yet. The area is wide open, with a layout that is very minimalistic. It was very clean, though, including the centralized condiment area, and there looked to be plenty of seats. We arrived around five, and three people were in line in front of us. The menu is fairly limited, from what I could tell. Two or three chicken or beef dishes, a pork dish, some sandwhiches (three, if I remember correctly), and some sides. Now, there's nothing wrong with this. It's better to do food right with limited selection, than mass quantities with poor quality. The only problem we ran into was that the people in front of us were leaning on the stack of menus, which are placed on the counter, and are not in an area that can be seen while standing in line. The guy was going over literally every menu option with the woman behind the counter, who, to her credit, was incredibly cordial and didn't seem like she was put out at all. Of course, other people kind of were, and there was some general toe-tapping. One of the guys from behind the line came out, probably to see if he could help someone else, but about that time, the slow customer got his act together and made his order. When we got to the front, it was pretty clear that this was a normal routine for her, at least for the time being. I guess she had to explain the concept of a "Hawaiian Plate Lunch," as well as the three sizes available and the options presented. Without pre-planning, my friend and I ordered the exact same thing. Mauna Loa Chicken with two scoops of rice, plus an extra scoop of rice instead of the macaroni salad. Nothing against their salad, I just don't care for any kind of macaroni salad, and apparently neither does my friend. The chicken is sort of a spicy-sweet sauce, whereas the rest of the menu seemed roughly based around teriyaki options. The drinks were self-serve, but the food was delivered to our table, in to-go containers. We both ordered the small size, and there was a decent amount of chicken for the cost, with plenty of rice. The sauce was good, but I could have used more of it. The flavour was nice, but not over-powering. I ended up tossing some Siracha hot sauce on the mix, just to get a little more heat. I wavered back and forth on my star rating for this one, but the fact is, the woman behind the counter was so cordial, friendly, and took care of all her customers, not just us, that she bumped the experience up from par to slightly above average. I would not be adverse to going back for a quick lunch, but I don't think I will make this my dinner meal again. read more
