This was not a pleasant experience for me. The atmosphere was not warm and cozy it just felt like they were going through the motions. Everything was not in the room that was necessary for the massage she kept having to go in and out and at one point she left the door open creating a draft. The over head light was on the entire time and 65% of the massage she was massaging me over the sheet. I requested hot stones and that was only about 5-10 minutes of the massage and only on my back not my entire body. By the time she had me flip to massage the front of my body there was maybe 10 mins left and again she was massaging me over the sheet. I let her know my problem areas were in my forearms on the front side and she basically just rubbed them and gave no real attention or kneading. I truly tried to give this place a chance but I will not be returning. I repeatedly asked during the massage how are the stones involved because from past experiences the stones are used throughout the entire massage and was ignored and I asked why wasn't all parts of my body given proper attention? I was told well if you did a 90 minute massage you would have a different experience. That's unacceptable. Full body is full body. I do not recommend them. What a waste of time and money. read more

This is an updated review. Initially, I posted a one star review based on an unpleasant experience in which the owner's wife decided to charge me for services I did not ask for or initiate. Immediately after posting my review, the owner, John, reached out and apologized for the issue. He admitted that what occurred was a misunderstanding and it was their fault. He offered a free one hour massage as a concession. I appreciated his prompt response to the matter and attempt to retain a loyal customer. I was asked to delete this review however I am choosing to update it and base my rating on what I would have given the place before the bad experience I had and the resolution of that incident. I was referred to John at Haven Day Spa by a close friend who highly recommended him. He confirmed my appointment and told me it was cash only. All fine; when I got there I was checked in and paid in advance (good COVID precautions with questionnaire re health (no proof of vaxx required) and temperature was taken). I was led to the private spa room. Then a female massage therapist arrived but did not introduce herself or even speak to me. She just indicated I should disrobe and get on the table. I was kind of disappointed with the whole experience! There were some good aspects to the massage but some not so good - little work on feet, mostly focused on back. I never met John and was massaged by Amy. I had to ask her name at the end; otherwise she was not at all communicative so the massage was awkward and impersonal! Then she demanded a tip and then she demanded more tip so I gave her a twenty and asked for change (she was the only one there) and suddenly she feigned not understanding and took the twenty and walked! So I left feeling ripped off! (Not the best way to end a massage) and the reason I've avoided places where you get treated "that way!" Oh well - the massage was okay, but not really therapeutic. My friend was also very annoyed when I told her what had happened and she recommended I contact John because she said he's generally good about fixing problems even after the fact. Angel gave me a wonderful prenatal massage and I have absolutely no complaints. Right when I got home, I took the most wonderful 1 hour nap. I am 7 months pregnant and this is my first time getting a prenatal massage. I usually get chair massages that are offered at work but since my clothes are left on, I don't really get the relief that I need. I started off the massage clothes off except for underwear, and a nice huge body pillow to hug since I need to lay on my side. She started working on my shoulders, down to my back and finally my legs. It did not feel like an hour at all! She always checked up on me to ensure I was feeling okay and the pressure was good. Maybe next time I'll ask her to work on my feet a little since my poor feet is carrying an extra 20 pounds. The massage was fine. Nothing fancy. The place smells funky and everything is OLD. My massage was yesterday and today I woke up itching all over. Every place the masseuse touched. Even my face. Buttocks. Back. Neck. It's awful..had to make a run to Target to get some type of itch cream. I've been reading other reviews and several people have mentioned the itching issue..and the owner writes them back with some none sense and talking down to them. Calling them "morons". I had a Groupon for this place and hadn't had a massage for awhile. This is definitely a no-frills place. Old, thin sheets, grungy walls, windows to the street barely covered. That said, the massage was good, EXCEPT too much time spent on my bottom (which made me uncomfortable). Also, the masseuse got up on the table on top of me, which was a surprise, but oh well. My only complaint is that the masseuse asked to take my watch off when I was laying on the table, and it was never given back! I assumed she put it in my purse, but no. Kathy massaged pretty much all of my knots out and I left feeling like a new woman. It was surprising to see the extremes from mostly 5 stars to the minority of dissatisfied 1 or 2 stars. I have worked in the medical field for 30 years and experiment with lots of different spas. Have gone to Haven for over 5 years and feel it is the most consistently excellent massage of any places I've gone to. Of course I haven't experienced work from every therapist, but have had really excellent work from 6 or 7 therapists who are all professional,skilled, and pleasant. It is a good combination of relaxation and also therapeutic work. The owners are genuinely concerned with the satisfaction of their clients and are the only spa I know who have scheduled in-service trainings for their therapists. It is important to let either the therapist or the front desk know any specifics of what you are looking for. I was surprised to read some reviews saying that the therapist did not listen to requests; I have found the opposite even though it is sometimes a little work to communicate. I would like to disagree with some of the negativity in the critical reviews. Although not a fancy decor, the ambiance is professional, clean, and pleasant. Haven Spa has won the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce "Best Spa" award for the last several years. In contrast to some comments, the sheets and towels are always clean. I have never been bothered by noise in the hallways or adjacent rooms. I do enjoy and appreciate deep work, but never have been bruised or have the therapist be unresponsive if asking for either deeper or lighter work. I much prefer the massages at Haven to the fluff massages at many fancy spas that charge twice as much. I was really in need of a massage and have been here once before. I was able to get an appointment with Kathy who did a lovely job. I had a 2 hour massage and foot reflexology treatment which was wonderful. I highly recommend Kathy - she's tiny but strong! I've been working out and my muscles were sore and tight and she helped get them loosened up again. My only suggestion would be for them to change the music to something more soothing & relaxing. The review is not all bad but I will not be returning or recommending this place because of my experience. I was a walk in. The front desk person was very nice. And it was great they took me with any prior appointment. Although, I did call first to check. My massues, Angel, was pleasant at first. I communicated to her that I only wanted shoulders, neck and arms. No full body neded. She was a bit talkative during the massage complaining about the heater and seemed rather irritated. During the massage she left the room several times without excusing herself. Unfortunately, just unprofessional demeanor. At the end of my massage I dressed and paid. I left an $8 tip.....it was $35 for 30 minutes so I figured $8 was fair for a 30 minute massage. The massues scoffed and said I should find another massues!!! RUDE!!! She points to the sign that suggests a $10 tip for a 60 minute massage. Which is a fair tip.....I generally tip more for other 60 minute massages I have had. Maybe she needs a massage. read more

My massage was rough, although I asked the therapist to not rub so hard, she continued. I almost got up and left because despite the 'ouches' and requests to ease up she didn't. I love massages, have gone several places in the bay area, but this was by far the most painful She tried to play it off as, sometimes it will be sore...I get that sometime you get sore after a massage but I know the difference between sore and 'you are hurting me'. I went today for my 75 min facial and I run from there after 15 min. Hopefully, you won't be able to schedule an appointment because nobody speaks English. But if you do then be prepare to wait about 30 min anyways. The room was dingy and didn't look fresh. My face was wiped with a paper towel that an esthetician washed and reused. The two stars aren't necessarily about the massage itself. The massage was a 3 star the most. I didn't realize how much the little things matter when it comes to getting a professional massage. The idea is I am supposed to be relaxed and they move my body where they need to. I found myself adjusting to make myself more comfortable or to give her access to different areas to massage. I made an appointment same day and they were able to get me in within the hour. Courteous, professional,and free parking. "Linda" was my therapist and she was AMAZING! I had the 2 hour massage+foot massage. I am not a fan of deep tissue, but Linda's deep tissue on certain pressure points was well worth any discomfort. My body feels amazing, all of the tension has been drained out of it. I will be back soon and tell others! My only concern is that there is a sign that gives you tipping guidelines which are well ove 50% of the massage price. I would not recommend this place. I too think that it is sub quality. I work in a place that has a well known spa but it is too expensive for me. I was looking for a place close to home. One basic question before they begin should be to ask if you have any injuries. I don't but they didn't ask. More importantly the therapist was way too harsh and my hip has been sore for two days now. The place isn't professional and doesn't seem clean. And...the therapist burped while doing my treatment. I had my first 60 minute Swedish massage and 30 minute reflexology with Lucy. She was very good. My lower back was really tight and she loosened that right up and the foot massage was just right too. She seems to know how to apply just the right amount of pressure. I will have to make this a monthly thing. The prices are extremely reasonable. My goodness! My Massage Therapist Amy is the best! I workout 5x/week and had the worst back and neck tensions. It was so bad that I had to take lunch early from work to go there.
