I nicked my tire heading into Brooklyn and ended up with a pretty quick leak. Thankfully I was right around the corner from Haven Cycles and got there about 20 minutes before closing. I do want to give a little grace since it was close to closing time, but the experience still left me disappointed. There were a few people inside, including staff, and despite making eye contact while they were laughing and chatting, I had to actually raise my voice to get someone's attention. When I finally did, I was told "pumps by the door," and they went right back to their conversation. It felt more like I was interrupting a group ride than walking into a shop that helps cyclists. To their credit, the pump was enough to get me home. When I brought it back, I was again told to just "leave it by the door," which reinforced the feeling that they wanted as little to do with me as possible and to get me out quickly. But if I come into a bike shop saying I nicked my tire, I'm really hoping for a new tube and a bit of help getting back on the road, not a quick solution that gets me out the door. I've heard from friends that this is supposed to be a go-to shop for cyclists in Brooklyn, which is why this was especially disappointing. It's one of the few bike shops I've been to that I trust through and through -- the prices are fair and the employees are honest. As a woman who bikes but doesn't know a ton about bikes, I often feel like guys at bike shops talk down to me / try to take advantage of my lack of knowledge and overcharge. UNSKILLED, UNRELIABLE. Haven Cycles might do acceptable work with simple, everyday repairs, but they lack the skill to do anything more than that - or the integrity to admit their mistakes and make things right for their customers. I went to Haven numerous times over the past couple years for simple, easy adjustments (derailleurs and such), and their work seemed to be fine. So when I recently needed to rebuild a bike wheel with a new rim, I decided to turn to them for that job as well. Big mistake. Haven rebuilt my wheel with a different color scheme from my original wheel (different-colored spoke nipples), so now it wasn't my color of choice and didn't match the other wheel on my bike. To top it off, the rebuilt wheel wasn't even true - the wheel wobbled when it spun. I asked them to redo the work with the right colors at their expense. To my astonishment, they refused, arguing that the color scheme wasn't in the work order. Which was bizarre - it never occurred to me that a mechanic would pick colors that deviated from the original. Finally they said they could redo the wheel with the correct colors and charge $35, and I agreed. Then, when they finished the work over a week later, they charged me not $35 but $50. I reminded them the price we agreed on, and they simply said the work was more involved than the original and that I was undercharged on the original work. I later asked for a refund of the $15 difference, and they refused, explaining among other things that I was undercharged for the original work - which they contended was excellent work, despite it being the wrong colors and not even true. I was astonished that Haven would treat a customer this way. A skilled, attentive mechanic would've rebuilt the wheel properly from the start. But mistakes do happen, and that's where integrity comes in - a business with integrity would recognize its errors and redo the work at its expense. Unfortunately, Haven did neither. If you need a bike repair beyond simple, everyday maintenance, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Haven will disappoint you. read more

Figured maybe the valve was busted in my aggro efforts, so I came by here. They did not treat me like an idiot (which does not go without saying in bike shops based on my experiences as a woman... I drove here instead of going to one walking distance from my home) even AFTER it turned out I WAS just kind of and idiot this time! Communications and turnaround times are fine. Pricing is also fair and economical. My complaint (and reason for the average score) is that I would have hoped for at least a 5 minute consultation when discussing customizations to my bicycle. I felt very rushed and felt like I couldn't ask questions. I wanted to trust them, but I ended up getting back a bike that I couldn't ride. Both rented a bike from here and had my brother's bike serviced. Staff is very friendly and quick. They swapped out my brother's bike tubing and repaired his spokes in the time it took us to get a coffee next door. The bike that I rented was a standard, three speed bike that fit the bill for my exploring around the city. I was also given a helmet and U-lock (all included in the standard price). The rental pricing was very accommodating, I was charged for a single day after picking up the bike at 4pm and dropping it off the next day prior to closing. If you're traveling to NY and have some time to spare, would recommend renting a bike from here and seeing the city. Definitely a fun way to check out the town. read more

I have been cycling my whole life. I grew up in Queens , and have lived in every boro at one point in my life. I have been to a lot of bike shops, I have been taken advantage of by so many different bike shops over the years it's basically what I've come to expect from a bike shop. BUT not with Haven Cycles. This bike shop really is a Haven. I have visited them with minor issues that they fixed immediately and didn't even take any money from me. YES they have fixed my bike on two separate occasions and didn't even charge me. On another occasion I referred a friend to go there to fix issues with his bike and they didn't charge him for fixing it too. My friend lives in a different part of the city and was amazed they didn't try to up-sell him for unnecessary repairs let alone not charge him. Like me he's more accustomed to visiting a bike shop and expecting it to feel like a bad dental visit, with Haven you feel respected and cared for. If you decide to go here please don't expect free repairs and make me regret posting this review. I don't want Haven to be hit with a barrage of freeloaders, they really are amazing people. read more

These guys are the best. I had a flat tire last night and they repaired it quickly. Although they didn't have the exact tube size in stock, the mechanic put something comparable in there. Unfortunately, I blew another flat on my ride home, and when I called the shop the mechanic offered to swap out the old tube with one of the right size the following day. Turns out, the mechanic rode to another shop and picked up a tube since they didn't have my size in stock. Not only did he change the flat again for free, but I got a full refund on the initial repair. Excellent customer service, it's so rare to see someone go the extra mile for such a small job. I had to make an account just to share how happy I am with this shop! I'm a beginner and was unsure where to begin with my vintage Craigslist buy. I emailed them without any real expectations and was blown away by their thoughtfulness. Jon is super nice and I didn't feel hesitant at all to ask beginner-level questions. He went out of his way to accommodate me (I'm immunocompromised) during a global pandemic. Now more than ever, people have to look out for one another, and it's extremely reassuring to know that they're out there. The guy who repairs the bike is nice. The other guy is not friendly. How about you hang some prices for your services and don't talk rude to people. Yes, I'm the girl who you though I would want your air for free, but I actually wanted to pay. Maybe you have many people coming in and asking you for free air, but there are some like myself who really don't want anything for free, and I don't expect you talking to me like that. Just hang your pricing for everything so this type of stuff doesn't happens to you again. And you don't need over-charge me for air and a little bit oil, almost $7, there are shops around you who charge $1 for air. Or you can simple get the pump out, so people can do it themselves, if you feel like this is not the job you like to service. read more

I've had one bicycle upgraded and one built from scratch upon falling in love with a frame hanging in the shop of Haven Cycles. I've got to stay whatever dream you have of a neighborhood bike shop Haven def takes the cake. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful as well as deeply knowledgeable in a nonpretentious way about bikes. The Bianchi they built rides better than I could have ever imagined and every small detail that came up from upgrading the montague they gave me very detailed receipts of how much the endeavour would cost before making a move. (low key they have good food recs in the area too ha!) They will help you find what's best for you and give you really good prices to boot. You don't find that kind of authenticity these days so tip your staff! read more

Especially as a woman cyclist, it can be hard to find a shop that will be patient with your questions and not immediately assume that you known nothing about bike mechanics. I came here after messing up a cable I was replacing on my bike, and John, the owner, not only fixed the problem quickly, he explained what he was doing as he went. He also caught a few other issues with my bike, such as my wheels being out of true and fault in my tires which could have caused a potentially dangerous blowout, and fixed these while he was at it! I will definitely return to Haven next time I have an issue with my bike, or just need a tune up. read more
