    Grilled Sandwich
    Terence S.

Quick lunch stop with coworkers before a flight, and Hattie B's Austin came through. The fryers were down because of the storm the night before, which normally would have been a letdown, especially since my coworkers had never been to the original Nashville hot chicken spot before. But the staff handled it really well. They were fast, apologetic, and refreshingly colloquial, not stiff or robotic, just real people taking care of customers and keeping things moving. Since fried chicken was off the table, I went with the grilled chicken, and honestly it was excellent. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and flavorful enough that it did not feel like a consolation prize. Maybe this was the universe giving my cholesterol a temporary reprieve. The collards were just okay and not the strongest part of the meal, but everything else made up for it. The restaurant itself was super clean, and you could tell this newer location is well cared for. At about two years old, it still felt sharp, polished, and well run. I've been to several Hattie B's locations over the years, including the original in Nashville, Franklin, and Atlanta, where I once saw a woman riding a horse down the street in front of the store, which remains one of the more unforgettable restaurant-adjacent moments of my life. Austin compared well with all of them. Bonus points, there was no line, so we had a quick lunch with coworkers and still made it to the airport early. Not the exact Hattie B's experience we expected, but still a very good one, and a place I'd absolutely come back to.

Big fan of Nashville hot chicken, however have never tried the Hattie B's location in South Austin until this visit. The parking was a little wonky, with limited parking options in both the front and back, but I was able to find a spot at the tail-end of the dinner rush. My friend and I ordered quickly at the counter, and sat at one of Hattie B's outdoor tables to enjoy the Spring night. I ordered the quarter bird dark plate, medium spice level, with pimento Mac & cheese. The Mac & cheese was creamy with just a hint of pimento peppers, and the fried chicken was hot and crunchy, although a bit salty and less spicy than expected. (Next time I'll probably move up a level to "hot".) My friend ordered a fried two tenders plate, also medium spice level, and fries. We enjoyed the crispy crinkle-cut fries with Hattie B's special seasoning. We chose the Nashville Comeback Sauce for our dipping sauce, which is like a mustard-ketchup-mayo aioli: pretty good! Liked how quick it was to order and receive our food, and the perfect portion size for a lunch or dinner. Pro tip -- check out the cute hot chicken wallpaper in the restroom. Adorable! Will be back the next time I'm craving hot chicken.

Loves: the warm welcome, fast service, fun music at a volume where you can still talk with your party, a number of TVs with the game on, plenty of seating, and a small yard area with games like big connect four. And Barq's on tap. It's better than the North location (which was so SALTY I didn't think I'd try a Hattie B's again). The portions are pretty generous. It's about $15-20 per person for a meal and a drink. We ordered the three big chicken tenders, fries, a blue cheese chicken sandwich, waffles, 2 sodas and a beer. It was all fine; it's just not my absolute favorite.

Hattie B's is an incredible value. The service is top-notch. They bring the food out very quickly consider considering it is fried. The chicken portions are very generous, and the chicken is cooked so well- I do not know how they get the chicken so juicy! Ambience is fast casual. You order out a counter and get a number. Our favorite is the crispy chicken sandwich with the special sauce and fries. Only negative I have to add is some of their sides aren't the best- the coleslaw wad over-sauced and sweet, and the mac n cheese tasted very bland. Fries are A++ though!

LOVE that a Hattie B's was brought to Texas and in Austin, for that matter! I always make it a point to stop here when in Nashville, so happy I don't have to travel as far now! I love everything on the menu- seriously! You cannot go wrong, and you have a choice in heat preference when ordering that will appease to anyone.

I've tried a few different hot chicken spots -- including a well-known one here in Austin that I won't name -- and Hattie B's beats them all. I ordered the Medium Hot Chicken sandwich with a side of fries. The chicken was juicy, the sauce they use was perfect, and even the coleslaw was good... and I'm not even a coleslaw person. 10/10 on the sandwich. The fries were perfectly crispy but just a tad too salty for me -- 6/10. The vibe was dope. There's bar seating, a full dining area, and plenty of room on the patio. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice breeze, which made the experience even better. If you're ever in the South Lamar area, definitely check them out.

Let's cut to the chase - the hype is real and the fried chicken won't disappoint you whether you get it in a sandwich or not. Not the best I've ever had but juicy and worthy of a visit. As far as the sides go, I'd definitely recommend getting the fried pickles and dipping them in the comeback and/or ranch sauce. While the mac n cheese is really popular, I wasn't too fond of it but maybe I'm just not a pimento guy. The watermelon marg was a little sweet but I'd still get it again. Even though the line was long, the staff was friendly and I'll definitely come by and try some other dishes (desserts looked great).

I tried Hattie B's for the first time and it absolutely lived up to the hype. I ordered the chicken sandwich in mild because I have a low tolerance for spice, and it was perfect still had a nice kick, but totally manageable. The chicken itself was juicy, crispy, and flavorful, and honestly every bite was amazing. The sandwich comes with a side of your choice, and I went with the pimento mac and cheese. It was super cheesy, creamy, and delicious -- definitely a standout. I also tried the coleslaw, which was fresh, crunchy, and the perfect balance to the heat of the chicken. Overall, a great meal from start to finish. Highly recommend Hattie B's if you want quality hot chicken with sides that hit just as hard!

Introduced my hubby to Hattie B's chicken. He loves fried foods and especially wings. I do not prefer fried foods, but sometimes you have to take one for the team. Our server, Genie, recommended the chicken tenders as the post popular food item. My hubby ordered the 5 wings and I ordered two chicken tenders with grits (love me some grits). All were deep fried and super crispy. The chicken tasted like it was made at home...well seasoned and crispy as if it was emersed in oil and immediately served. Our order was filled almost before we found a place to sit. The chicken came out super hot. In fact, you could see steam hoovering over the chicken. Our meals were tasty. Hattie B's is a cross between a fast food and sit down restaurant. Their decor is the standout with bold red colors, enlarged writing on the side of the walls and a retractable door that leads to outside seating.

My girlfriend and I went here for a Yelp event and were pleasantly surprised by the food. She got the chicken sandwich. It was a little salty, but really good if you put the mac and cheese in it. I loved the mac and cheese. I had the southern chicken salad with ranch and while it was good, it was nothing special. The service was very friendly and welcoming, which we noticed right away and there is plenty of seating inside and a small outdoor area as well. Surprisingly, the drinks were very good. The soda was carbonated and crisp and the powerade tasted fresh, which is a big plus. I would definitely come back again.

Okay after hearing all about Hattie B's, I had to try it. The food came out fast and parking and the wait on a weekend were not bad at all. We ordered Chicken and Waffles as well as a Fried Chicken Sandwich. The Mac and cheese was yummy (I always love a good Mac and cheese). Overall everything was pretty good.

Oh shit I forgot to leave a review!! First off; I'd like to apologize for Tumble for cheating but this place here!!!! Top Tier!!! That leg quarter changed my life lol!! The greens taste home made and the potato salad was decent (good for cooling your mouth down if needed. I just ordered the jumbo wings and THAT they indeed are!! JUMBO!! Update on the sides: the greens are starting to be a hit or miss, one day they taste fresh and some days they taste like "yesterday or 2 days ago" The grits!!! Chefs kiss!! I'm a sugar in my grits girl unless it's for shrimp and grits and I could eat these alone! The beans... bruh! TRASH!! Tastes like straight black pepper, as if someone loosened the cap and wayyy too much poured out. The black eyed peas were different...cold; not nasty; but not something I'd get excited for. The Mac and Cheese made me wanna fight!! Disgusting the coleslaw taste like basic coleslaw so no biggie. Now last but not least that banana pudding made me sad I had such high hopes and that shit tastes old as shit!! Like it was in the fridge from last week or maybe thawed from the freezer. Now I usually stick to my leg quarter (HOT) and either greens, potato salad or maybe even grits

    Kim D.

Medium spice was pretty good but I could have done mild for a little less spice. Chicken sandwich was delicious! Lt the best one I've ever had but definitely hits the spot. The ranch is not the best. Service was amazing! Really nice people! Also got a watermelon margarita and it was a big size but was a little too sweet.

Ask the Community - Hattie B's Hot Chicken - Austin - South Lamar

Does Haddie B's use pepper-infused oils to achieve different heat levels post frying? I'm pretty sure Tumble 22 does this while Gus's does not. My experience favors Gus's approach purely for the uniformity bite-to-bite, relative to crunch and heat.

Hey Robert, we add our spice blend to our oil base and dip the chicken in it after it comes out hot and fresh from the fryer! Hope you got to come in and experience some authentic Nashville hot chicken with us. Thank you!

You can exchange the default sides for some other options for a little extra charge. It was wonderful to see how generous the portion sizes were, including the sides! The chicken was perfectly friend and breaded in my opinion while keeping the white meat tender -- it was still like that even after I put the leftovers in the air fryer the next day. The baked beans were very flavorful and the sweetness complimented the savory chicken well. The cheer on top moment was the fact that the chicken was seasoned with a spicy seasoning so there was a bit of a subtle spicy aftertaste in each bite! I'll definitely be back again! :)

The chicken we had was dry enough that the crust felt like the only source of moisture. Flavor-wise, it never really arrived -- just basic chicken, none of that deep, savory, robust profile you expect from a place that claims world‑famous status. It wasn't offensive, just forgettable, which is almost worse for a fried‑chicken joint. Service was fine -- not warm, not cold, just functional. But being out of sweet tea, a southern staple and practically part of the cultural contract of fried chicken, didn't help the mood. And honestly, even if they'd had it, the chicken wasn't good enough for sweet tea to save the experience. Overall, Gus's felt like a place coasting on reputation rather than execution. Dry chicken, muted flavor, and missing sweet tea make it hard to justify a return visit.

Spicy Boys has four locations in the Austin area, with probably their most popular at Zilker Brewing. They are a spicy chicken establishment and their spicy chicken comes in different shapes and sizes from bone-in fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, and nuggets. It hits every time. The mayonnaise, the pickles, the perfectly crisp chicken: you can't miss it. As a side, I ALWAYS without fail get their Tater Tots. They are consistently crispy while remaining soft on the inside. Sometimes I will get it seasoned with their Tingly Sichuan, but the heat is sometimes too much. I cannot recommend the tots enough. Spicy Boys is one of those places that is always there for you. They are consistently open and the people making the orders are putting a ton of dedication into making them smack every time. The sandwich alone comes at $9.50 with the tots at $3.50, which seems on par or slightly lower than a typical food truck if my memory serves me right. They were crispy with an earth-shattering crunch with plenty of flavor. The spicy was not spicy whatsoever. Just a slightly more seasoned tender. The fries were crispy and a pretty standard affair at a local spot like Happy Chicks. The mac was a great side choice as I thought they did a pretty nice job with them as well. The prices were pretty fair with a chicken sandwich costing $9.99 and my 3-piece meal costing me a cool $12.50 There's so many chicken tender spots going around in Texas, but it's always cool to come to an Austin-localized spot to mack down on some poultry. The fries were crispy and crunchy, and the fruit cup was fresh and delicious. The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. I will definitely be back!

I stopped by Donkey Mo's and ordered the 5-piece jumbo wings with the soy garlic sauce, and let me…read moretell you...these wings were HUGE! The skin was incredibly crispy (just how I like it!) and the soy garlic sauce had a great balance of sweet and savory flavor without being overpowering. They definitely didn't skimp on the size either--5 wings was more than enough! I skipped the sides this time because I wanted to focus on the wings, but their onion rings caught my eye, so I'll definitely be back to give those a try. Now...the only downside was the parking. It looked like the front parking lot had been freshly painted because every parking space was blocked off with cones. Everything appeared dry, so I wasn't sure why the cones were still there. That forced everyone to park in the back, which was already super congested. I mentioned it to the staff, but they didn't seem too concerned. Honestly, if I hadn't been determined to try this place--or if it had been any hotter outside or I hadn't gotten lucky finding a parking spot--I probably would've left. Thankfully, the wings made up for the inconvenience! If they can get the parking situation figured out, this spot will be an even better experience. I'll definitely be back...and next time, those onion rings are coming home with me!

I got the 10-pc jumbo wings, which allowed me to try 2 flavors. For one of the flavors I got Holy Donkey but I don't feel like the heat was really there. But still overall, tasty chicken! I got some sides to go and they were perfectly fried though I'm a bit sad to see a small side of pickled radish just doesn't come with Korean fried chicken (though you can purchase some but I had already bought 2 sides and didn't want to spend $5 for radish). Overall, the folks working there were friendly, my food was good, and I didn't have to wait too long for my food to go.
