The fryers were down because of the storm the night before, which normally would have been a letdown, especially since my coworkers had never been to the original Nashville hot chicken spot before. But the staff handled it really well. They were fast, apologetic, and refreshingly colloquial, not stiff or robotic, just real people taking care of customers and keeping things moving. Since fried chicken was off the table, I went with the grilled chicken, and honestly it was excellent. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, and flavorful enough that it did not feel like a consolation prize. Maybe this was the universe giving my cholesterol a temporary reprieve. The collards were just okay and not the strongest part of the meal, but everything else made up for it. The restaurant itself was super clean, and you could tell this newer location is well cared for. At about two years old, it still felt sharp, polished, and well run. I've been to several Hattie B's locations over the years, including the original in Nashville, Franklin, and Atlanta, where I once saw a woman riding a horse down the street in front of the store, which remains one of the more unforgettable restaurant-adjacent moments of my life. Hattie B's is a smallish national Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken chain. If you are going to be fussy about getting the absolute best Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken in town, you go to Tumbleweed 22. But Nashville-Hot Fried Chicken is generally good stuff wherever you get it. If you live in South Austin and you don't want to drive up to Lake Austin or down to San Marcos for a Tumbleweed chicken, the South Lamar Hattie's will do you perfectly well. I had the medium heat. They advertise sadomasochistic levels of heat using either habaneros or ghost peppers. While I did not try any of their burn-your-esophagus-out-plus-most-of-your-neck flavors, I am going to guess those are pretty good. My medium fried chicken needed something. More heat would have been a good idea. They have a Comeback sauce that is spicier than their other sauce offerings. The Comeback sauce had kick. It definitely improved the medium chicken. The greasy toast underneath the chicken at Tumbleweed is one of the true and deep pleasures of life. Here it is just greasy toast. Maybe I am getting jaded in my old age. The one unambiguous negative was the cheesy grits. Didn't taste like much. They were gritty in a bad way. Grits are supposed to be like Ralston cereal with some texture but everything soft. I think the grits could have taken more liquid in the cooking or more cooking time. But basically, this is an okay place. If I was to go back, I would definitely go for one of the blow-your-brains-out flavors. Have plenty of water on hand plus the starchiest side dish you can order that is not grits. Normally, when I get to this part of town, I am concerned about parking, but there's about 30 slots here which means you'll most likely find a space even during the lunch rush. Lots of seating inside to the tune of about 20 tables and 11 more four tops on their patio outside facing Lamar. Every table comes with a roll of napkins which you will definitely need. You basically order at the counter where you'll face the tip screen and they'll bring it out to you. They do have frozen, draft and canned alcoholic beverages along with fountain drinks. If you like your chicken a little on the spicy side, I recommend you just get the medium level otherwise anything hotter is just torture. The chicken itself is fried in soybean oil. The crinkle cut fries are a good choice, although I prefer fresh cut home fries and the collard greens were decent. This is a tough one to write because I am comparing the food we had with other favorites around town that have a spicy chicken sandwich. This did not turn out to be a favorite unfortunately. Nothing bad about the food just didn't hit for me. We had the chicken sandwich and fries. I had mild, husband had medium. Spice level as true to the order. The chicken breast was quality. Lots of quality meat! The fries were fresh / had spice on them but couldn't really taste it. Service was great. It's order yourself and they bring out to you. Running around and saw they had Hattie B's and had to stop. Service was good even though fried pickles dont count as a side, so I got the fries. Got the "hot" sandwich with pimento cheese and it was nice and crispy but tbh the heat was lacking compared to other hot chicken spots. Next time I'll up the heat level. read more
